TalkBack / Nintendo Patents Button-Customizable Handheld
« on: May 07, 2014, 11:24:46 PM »

The buttons, they are a-changin'.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37369/nintendo-patents-button-customizable-handheld

Nintendo has filed a patent for a handheld with switchable buttons.

The patent was filed in October of last year, but was published a mere week ago. The diagrams resemble the lower, touch screen half of a 3DS, or even the Wii U GamePad. Either way, it features four different control sets, all being interchangeable. Examples include switching a D-Pad out for a four-button face, an analog stick for a D-Pad, or whatever else your heart desires.

Having this patent filed lets us peer into another idea being brewed at Nintendo, but certainly does not guarantee anything. Patents are created often for multiple reasons, so it's best keep your hopes in check.

TalkBack / Nintendo & Creative Settle on $7M Lawsuit
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:26:47 PM »

It's a secret, though.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37328/nintendo-n-creative-settle-on-7m-lawsuit

Nintendo of America and Creative Integrated Systems Inc. have recently settled on a $7 million lawsuit.

Creative sued Nintendo, claiming that Nintendo had infringed their read-only memory chip patent, which was filed in 1990. Over 15 years, Creative felt that Nintendo owed at least a 2 percent royalty per chip for damages of $7 million.

A verdict was finally reached after several days, but was questioned for containing inconsistencies relating to Nintendo's liability and the longevity of the applied infringement. Due to the inconsistencies, the verdict was amended, and the court adjourned before a final verdict was reached.

The next morning, the two parties presented their settlement to the judge, bringing the trial to a premature close. James Pak, representing Nintendo, stated that a confidential agreement had been reached, while Todd Vare, representing Creative, said he was contained from releasing any details of the settlement.

Though the Kickstarter campaign resulted in over 130% of the £3,000 goal, PayPal payments are still being accepted. Donations of £7, £30, and £50 will continue to earn backers the original Kickstarter rewards.

The splashy platformer managed to climb its way to the first stretch goal of £4,000 just prior to the campaign's end. This means 4-player co-op will now be possible as free DLC.

Twisted Fusion is projected for a December release.

TalkBack / Iwata Aims to Take Nintendo Beyond Games
« on: April 29, 2014, 11:20:00 PM »

"Nintendo is a company that can do whatever it wants."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37293/iwata-aims-to-take-nintendo-beyond-games

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata intends to take Nintendo beyond video games and the public's perception of the company, he stated in an an interview with Diamond.jp.

Iwata was asked to elaborate on Nintendo's January statements, regarding the Quality of Life platform and their desire to extend entertainment.

"A lot of people around the world think Nintendo is solely a company that makes video games, and I believe more and more of our own employees have started thinking in this way," Iwata commented. "...Even though we won't chance the fact that our focus is on video games, I felt the need to take that occasion to state that Nintendo is a company that can do whatever it wants."

Iwata was also remarked on similar thoughts of his predecessor, Hiroshi Yamauchi. "Yamauchi always said 'Nintendo is an entertainment company and should never be anything else', but he didn't necessarily think 'entertainment equals video games'."

No products or services were clarified, leaving room for imagination on both the direction that Iwata aims Nintendo to head in the entertainment business, and also their Quality of Life platform.

TalkBack / Next Dragon Quest in Development
« on: April 28, 2014, 02:25:18 AM »

A premature announcement?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37274/next-dragon-quest-in-development

The next Dragon Quest from Square Enix is in development, it seems.

Series creator Yujii Horii made the announcement at the Nico Nico Super Conference 3 in Chiba, Japan. However, Horii's comment raised looks from Dragon Quest X's producer Yosuke Saito and chief planner Anzai Takashi as if it shouldn't have been said.

No title was announced, but Dragon Quest XI would be a fair assumption to follow the "next" game's predecessor, Dragon Quest X.

TalkBack / Hex Heroes Reaches Kickstarter Goal
« on: April 24, 2014, 07:20:36 PM »

Fully funded after a significant comeback.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37257/hex-heroes-reaches-kickstarter-goal

Hex Heroes has recently reached its $80,000 goal hours before the Kickstarter campaign ended earlier today.

The Wii U party RTS title managed to pull in about the last quarter of its funding in the last two days of the campaign. This is in part due to the game's designer, Mario Castañeda, livestreaming a marathon playthrough of Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. These games were chosen due to Grant Kirkhope having worked on them, and will be Hex Heroes' composer.

Though no stretch goals were yet reached, Prismatic Games is offering continued pledging via PayPal, with most reward tiers still being honored.

Get your practice swings in.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37193/nintendo-hosting-worldwide-mario-golf-tournament

Nintendo is hosting regional and worldwide tournaments in Mario Golf: World tour, starting May 22.

The tournament is in collaboration with golf gear manufacturer Callaway, and participants will receive in-game, stat-enhancing Callaway Golf items, such as clubs and balls. Aside from the Callaway tournaments, custom-made tournaments can also be created by players. All tournament winners will be awarded in-game coins that can be used to purchase more gear from Toad's Shop.

The tournaments will offer a good assortment, from larger competitions to challenges such as longest-drive, speed golf, or coin-gathering. They can be accessed in Mario Golf mode or using the entry machines in the Castle Club. SpotPass notifications will be available to check for upcoming and available tournaments. From there, players can play an event, and upload their score. Leaderboards will also be available to monitor progression.

A demo for Mario Golf: World Tour will launch on the Nintendo 3DS eShop on April 24 before releasing on May 2 in the U.S. and will be priced at $29.99. This gives a full few weeks to get in practice. Good luck!

I'm guessing they didn't win the DS line case.

Also that particular patent can apply to ANY COMPUTER PERIOD.  That is way to broad to have been patentable.

Sadly, I could not find any final results whatsoever regarding the DS line case.

« on: April 17, 2014, 11:53:56 PM »
I hope they can get the huge push they need in their last six days of funding. It really is a wonderful idea and I wish that Wii U owners would support an innovative use of the Gamepad. It saddens me to think this won't happen.

I've already backed $45, myself.

I hope so, too. It looks like it will happen either way, but it would be best (and easiest) if they reached the goal.

No general timing was stated regarding its release other than later this year, but we'll let you know as soon as word is out.

TalkBack / New DrinkBox Game Announced, May Be Coming to Wii U, 3DS
« on: April 16, 2014, 11:05:00 PM »

Slice 'em and dice 'em.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37164/new-drinkbox-game-announced-may-be-coming-to-wii-u-3ds

DrinkBox Studios has announced their next game, Severed.

A non-linear action-fantasy with a warrior heroine, it's explained as a cross between Mega Man, Infinity Blade, and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. The game seems to rely on a couple of core features, including world exploration and a control scheme reliant gesture-based inputs. For example, swiping will perform both magical spells and physical attacks.

The adventure begins with the protagonist missing part of her arm, but upgrades are obtained along the journey by severing enemy flesh and attaching it to your body. Some areas may be harder to travel depending on upgrades already obtained, making areas worth exploring multiple times.

Though it is touch screen reliant, no specifics were stated as to which platforms it will be released on. However, the team is open to bring the game to platforms where it makes sense, including 3DS and Wii U. Currently, Severed's release date is scheduled for next year.

You can check out the announcement trailer below:

TalkBack / BurgerTime World Tour Leaving Wii Shop
« on: April 16, 2014, 10:55:00 PM »

Expiring licenses means no more Peter Pepper.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37179/burgertime-world-tour-leaving-wii-shop

BurgerTime World Tour, the WiiWare sequel to the classic game, will soon be removed from the Wii Shop Channel due to expiring licensing agreements, according to publisher MonkeyPaw Games.

Unlike other versions of the game, World Tour will not be discounted on the Wii. The publisher stated that owners of World Tour "should still" be able to download the game even after it is removed from the shop.

You can check out our interview with the makers of the game back in 2011 if you want to know some more details about BurgerTime World Tour on WiiWare.

We first reported that BurgerTime World Tour would be discounted on WiiWare. However, according to Monkey Paw Games, it will not be. Sorry for the confusion.

TalkBack / Interview with Prismatic Games on Hex Heroes
« on: April 16, 2014, 10:01:00 PM »

We talk to the studio behind this Wii U RTS now on Kickstarter.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/37171/interview-with-prismatic-games-on-hex-heroes

A new party RTS game called Hex Heroes from Prismatic Games is currently campaigning on Kickstarter. Lucky for you, we got to have a nice interview with them about it. The game will fully utilize the GamePad, which could be promising for any Wii U owner. Check out Hex Heroes' Kickstarter here. If you're interest, you can go check out their Kickstarter, and possibly back the project.

Nintendo World Report (NWR): First off, please give us the lowdown on Hex Heroes for those that don't know.

Prismatic Games (PG): Hex Heroes blends the classic strategy elements found in RTS games like Starcraft and Age of Empires with the action you might find in Legend of Zelda or God of War. One person on the GamePad has a birds-eye view of the battlefield and carries out executive commands while leading their team. That team is comprised of your friends on the couch, who fight, explore, and harvest resources on the ground level. The game is both single-player and co-op.

NWR: I love the fact that you guys know that this is a game that Wii U owners will want, partially due to yourselves owning the system. What major reason will Wii U owners want this game?

PG: It's the reason they bought a Wii U. Let's be honest with ourselves, we didn't buy a Wii U to play Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty. We bought it because of the innovation the GamePad afforded. We're very excited to be taking up the mantle of bringing an experience that hasn't really been seen before to a platform that supports it so natively.

NWR: Thanks to you guys, I now love the term "Par-TS" (party RTS). Being the world's first game in that genre, you have a lot of ideas to toy with, I imagine. Is it a challenge to find the certain mechanics that will make this game work so well?

PG: It's our only challenge, really. We plan to release in April 2015 and most of that year, development will involve us playtesting the game and making it fun. We understand that harvesting resources doesn't innately sound engaging, but Team Fortress 2 has made being the medic or engineer fun, so we're confident we can deliver.

NWR: The game also features cameos from other games, such as Rusty from SteamWorld Dig, Juan from Guacamelee, and Max from Mutant Mudds. While there are plenty of awesome cameos already, were there others you guys were hoping to get in that didn't yet make the cut?

PG: Absolutely. We really had our hearts set on Shantae, Beck of Mighty Number 9, and, my personal favorite, Raz from Psychonauts. We actually have a tweet aimed at Notch asking for a Steve cameo that's reached 100 retweets - we'll see how that plays out.

NWR: How'd you guys score Grant Kirkhope (composer of Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 and others) to do the composition? That sample on the Kickstarter was getting me pumped.

PG: Being an indie developer gave me the clout needed to work the channels and get in touch with him. We spoke over the course of a couple of months about bringing him on and when we finally met at GDC we made it official. He's a really cool and down-to-earth guy.

NWR: Finally, if the game doesn't quite reach the Kickstarter goal, what will that mean exactly for Hex Heroes? Please tell me it will come to Wii U no matter what.

PG: If the Kickstarter campaign does not succeed, we as indie developers have a couple of options. We can turn to publishers for funding, but this means we greatly compromise our initial vision and we lose the sense of community Kickstarter affords us. That's even if a publisher will pick up an experimental Wii U game. Another option is working out of our basements - this isn't ideal by any means. If we have to self-fund in our spare time, it will take a very long time and we don't have the means to afford Grant's music. If I may add: If you own a Wii U, you owe it to yourself to back this game. Hex Heroes will make full use of the gamepad in ways Nintendo promised to do. If you've never backed something on Kickstarter before, your money isn't spent unless the campaign succeeds; so please show your support. Thank you.

TalkBack / Secure Axcess Sues Nintendo for Patent Infringement
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:57:18 PM »

Yup, again.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37178/secure-axcess-sues-nintendo-for-patent-infringement

Both Nintendo Co. Ltd. and Nintendo of America, Inc., along with a slew of other companies, are being accused of patent infringement by Secure Axcess, LLC,

The patent in question was issued February 18, 2003, and is for "a computer providing multiple display capability where one display presents the current document and another display may show a true display of a previously opened document."

Compensatory damages, costs, among other reliefs are what Secure Axcess is looking to gain for the companies selling the Wii U without license or authorization.

This isn't the first time Secure Axcess has taken legal action to Nintendo, either. Last January, the company summoned Nintendo for infringement for the very same patent as the new Wii U case, except with the Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, 3DS, and 3DS XL.
