Title: Disney+
Post by: nickmitch on April 11, 2019, 10:20:56 PM
Might as well make a new thread to start filling out our new child forum.

Disney finally made the big announcement today, April 11th.

A lot of content is coming, including The Simpsons (https://twitter.com/Disney/status/1116490792762138624), which will be streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Apps will be coming to smart devices and gaming systems, including the Switch.

Content is downloadable for offline viewing.

New Marvel shows were announced:
-Loki

-WandaVision (this is the actual name)
-What If? (Peggy Carter gets the Super Soldier Serum.)

All Pixar Films and shorts will be on the service.

The World According to Jeff Goldblum announced.

Captain Marvel will stream exclusively from the service.

All theatrical releases from here on out will be exclusive to the service.

First Live-Action Star Wars Series.

All Star Wars movies to hit service within a year.

Does anyone know if this is an international release or just a US release?  Or if Disney will be putting restrictions from world wide access?  Because I would be interested in this service much more than Netflix and I would subscribe if it is accessible in Korea.

Quote from: Engadget
Disney revealed its plans for a "worldwide" rollout touching all of the "major" regions in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America over the next couple of years. It doesn't sound like it will touch Netflix's actual worldwide ability that skips only a few countries, but should reach most of the larger markets by 2021.

Not quite the specific answer, but they are launching worldwide being a bit vague about specifics currently.

The claim that all Disney movies will be on the service seems... questionable.

Will Song of the South be available?

The entire library was confirmed at a March shareholders meeting.

Quote from: Engadget link=https://www.engadget.com/2019/03/07/disney-plus-entire-movie-library/
"The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call library product, movies, and television, with a lot of original product as well, movies and television. And at some point fairly soon after launch it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a 'vault' and brought out basically every few years will be on the service," said Iger during the meeting.

But that specific language seems to have been left out of today's discussion, and I can't find anything that says if they answered that specific question.

Edit: I didn't watch the full 3.5 hour video, but I've been reading along with releases and things.  Not sure if any reliable source said today that the full vault was going to be released.

The Simpsons moving to this is interesting, because the only way to legally stream it before required a cable login. Does Disney+ show ads? I never used the FX app to watch Simpsons episodes even though I had access to it because of the ads, so I stuck with my DVD rips.

Can I just pay $700 for lifetime membership?
or a 10yr membership.... so I can avoid the eventual continual price raise yearly after the 3rd year?

Glad it is ad free. That's a big deal for me. Had planned on just doing D+ and Netflix, but if the price is right on that bundle I may add Hulu to the mix. We already let our Prime membership expire to save money, so not super keen on adding yet another subscription to the mix.

Just read some of the casting and Tessa Thompson as Lady in Lady & the Tramp sounds amazing. Odd it is only coming to D+ and not theaters. Makes me wonder if they realize not all of their rehashed animated films will have the desired audience pull in theaters.

Could also be that with the acquisition of Fox, they are beginning to saturate the film market. Hopefully this leads to a "Disney Renaissance" of TV output.

And that full lineup is rather diverse. Lots of good stuff, and some lesser known/loved classics that are perfect fodder for "what to watch?" evenings where you just throw something up to chill with.

Ducktales and Goof Troop, but no Chip N Dale, Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck, Tale Spin, or Gummi Bears. Hopefully those come soon because OG Disney Afternoon was great.

Main reason why I signed up for the $1 a month Hulu package deal a few months ago.

I'm sure they gotta save something for that second wave of advertising/memberships to get those that didn't come in the initial rush.

$7/month is tough to argue against, especially with the library of kids content i'd expect, and the whole Simpsons library?!? (My wife and I are slowly doing a watch of the earlier seasons since she's never sat down and watched it)....I'll be signing up day-one.

Another interesting tidbit is that Feige said they have 10years worth of behind the scenes stuff that will eventually become an MCU Docu-series on D+

edit: I'm playing catch up here :)

Finally.... #itsallconnected (but for real this time)
Hopefully AoS comes to D+ for that infinite renewal and playtime in the MCU playbox

ALl the D+ shows will certainly be cannon, and may directly take place between movies.

...about that Lifetime subscription.....
or atleast let me pay for a 10yr renewal upfront. LOL
...an extra $3 a month for lifetime grandfathering of my account?

I feel like Disney is going for the get the audience first and undercut the competition.  I think 7.99 is a great introductory price, and when Disney releases to the world and has a large enough marketshare they could raise it to 9.99 or not, because they have enough money in subscriptions months to fund all their programs.  Honestly, I already like how Disney is treating their shows like a European model.  Tell the story and get out.  6 episode miniseries is great, and it is a great way to tell stories with characters people love that may or may not be featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as much anymore.

Disney has made enough money off of Marvel alone to take that kind of risk.  Plus, Disney has a lot to offer with Fox and Disney properties.  Honestly Disney should have one single app and like people have said, allow it to be set up with profiles that offer everything.  But I guess that isn't the strategy.  They could have separate apps but only one single subscription then content could be separated if they really want.

On some levels it makes sense, especially for a service like this, but they should still find a way to release it. Maybe allow it to become public domain? Or someone here a while ago mentioned they could add an intro talking about civil rights, racism, and how this was a product of a different time.
Title: Re: Disney+

I haven't seen the movie since 4th grade. And I'm not sure if I even saw the entire movie. Or if I just saw a clip. But from what I understand of it, the time period is ambiguous.

Though I just looked it up and apparently it takes place in the Reconstruction era. So, if people were offended that it portrays people enslaved as happy then it is purely a misinterpretation. I probably watched a different movie in 4th grade.

that isn't to say there isn't some racist stuff in it. There were a few times there was some old looney tunes content released on Amazon that I went to watch. I for sure wouldn't show them to my nephews. Also, the batman serials are hard to watch. Though, on some level they are so over the top racist that it becomes funny through absurdity and disbelief. But reading through the complaints about Songs of the South most were upset he spoke a regional dialect and that the character Uncle Remis isn't an upper class educated elitist. Which to me sounds like an effort of counter propaganda and internal cultural suppression. I haven't seen the movie though, so I can't really say how objectionable it is. That's the problem with not being able to view the product for myself. I can't judge.

I think Disney should declare this movie into public domain because they're never going to make any money off of it ever again. Of course Disney would not do this because they would want to suppress anything that could possibly reflect upon them negatively. This is whether or not the public would vindicate them or not. It isn't worth the bad press. It's like the loose end in a bank robbery.

I've been trying to collect every Disney cartoon(not counting CG movies) starting with Snow White and ending with Princess and the Frog and this one can't be apart of the collection. Because SOTS isn't out on home media. Though movies with live action barely count here. Sometimes collecting is weird too. Like I could have bought Cinderella 2 yesterday and I read the back and the plot sounded so bad. So, I passed it up for now. I'm not sure if I even want sequels in my collection, but I already have most of those. I'm collecting mostly VHS with a few exceptions. Most of the time they're only 50 cents at the thrift store. Yesterday I made the mistake of buying my first duplicate in the collection. I wasn't sure if I had The Hunchback of Notre Dame yet. I did.

I think when you bury these kinds of things, people forget why they were offensive and that there was a time when stuff like that was getting made.  WB puts disclaimers on all their old racist cartoons, which I think is the correct approach.

There's a lot of problems with the film.  The depiction of the Uncle Remus character is just one of them.  The film never clearly establishes a post-emancipation time period, but the book it's based on is meant to be that time frame.  Either way, the film was designed to present life for African Americans on plantations to be happy and generally positive experiences when they were overwhelming not, even during the sharecropping era.  The intent was to soften an unpleasant history.

The other thing about this is that the Br'er Rabbit stories might kind of end up lost to time.  I think a home video was made a while back, but in more of a direct-to-video quality.  I'm not sure what the rights are to the Uncle Remus character, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to try and do them justice seeing as they're kind of tainted.  Could be a missed opportunity for Disney to do that one right.

I am hoping Disney does the Apple thing, and allow its service to be used despite where your I.P. address says you are, and just uses your address and bank account to verify American citizenship.  Then I would consider this.  The value of this streaming service is really outstanding at the moment.

So I'm not personally offended by that scene and would prefer if it wasn't removed... but I can understand why some wouldn't appreciate (to put it gently) the caricatures and stereotypes being presented, especially if similar stereotypes are considered the only representation available.

In my mind, it's not easy to know the best approach when re-releasing content made from different time periods. I tend to favor releasing "as is" and making efforts to provide context and discussion about how/why societal standards and expectations have changed (as long as the content being released isn't actively harmful, which would have been my take in this instance). I'm usually not in favor of re-editing an existing work to better fit modern opinions unless you are releasing the edited content as a new version.

Wait, they cut the whole crow scene? I thought they only cut one reference/joke. That scene was the best part of the film. I loved them as a kid and thought they were cool. Without them the film would have probably been overwhelmingly sad for little me. They were the key to showing Dumbo he had a talent and motivated him to try and use it.

I may be a white dude who is unable to relate with the problem, but I don't think caricatures are inherently bad. When you sit down and have a cartoon caricature portrait done of yourself, they pick out a prominent feature about you and exaggerate that feature. I think it is more how you use those caricatures that is a problem. And I'm not seeing any malicious reasons for the crows. They come in and provide a fun song, and motivate the main character to grow and try something new because they can see what other people made fun of is actually his capacity to be more than any elephant before or after.

If anything, I would be worried that people are attempting to suppress the prominent features of minorities when we should be celebrating those differences. Its like the whole "I don't see a white or black person, I see you" where the people end up denying an intrinsic part of a person.

The best response I can come up with here is that something/someone doesn’t need to have malicious intentions to be offensive. This is a subtle distinction but an important one. It’s kind of like when someone tries to defend something racist they said by saying, “I’m not racist.” Well, saying they’re not racist doesn’t make them not racist. People don’t care whether someone thinks in their heart that they aren’t racist. People care (or at least should care) about the racist thing that person said or did. The intention doesn’t have to match the act.

That said, it’s probably better that Disney just cut the scene entirely even if the movie feels even more dour because of it. Disney may not have intended to offend. Fine. What’s done is done. It can’t erase the past, but it’s willing to admit it’s problematic enough to leave it in the past. I can’t blame Disney for deciding this isn’t a hill it’s willing to die on.

This is true.  You can definitely tell within the dialect of the Crows and the words they sing who they represent and how the creators may be racist.  I don't know how the African American community feels about the crows, but in this time I can see being careful.  That said, I know many Mexican-Americans that were upset when Cartoon Network decided never to air anymore Speedy Gonzales cartoons.  Those were definitely racist stereotypes in that cartoon, but the community still loved Speedy himself and having some representation in a comic.

I get that we need to be careful and the line is hard to draw.  So if Disney wants to do this they can and should.  I wonder if this will hurt the flow of the movie over all.

I still dislike the expurgation, where large corporations pick and choose which portions of existing works remain marketable based on what they feel will elicit the least reaction from the public, rather than retiring an entire work if it's deemed problematic or keeping dated content "as is" and discussing why some parts are recognized as a problem today.

But discussing problems like racism can often be awkward and difficult, and it would be impossible to mandate that such a discussion is heard with media like this. And retiring a whole work just isn't as profitable...

Looks like Disney+ is going to be offered up at 6.99mo or $70 for the whole year
but they also have a bundle package:

Disney+, ESPN+, and Ad supported Hulu for $12.99mo

I currently have (ad)Hulu for $1mo thru Sep 2019, and honestly... I can't stand the black screens that come up for 60-90 where ads are supposed to play.
if they throw a deal for no-ad Hulu, and if someone can confirm I can stream NBA games on ESPN+, then I would probably take the bundle deal, but as of now, solo D+ for me (1yr paid upfront)

Still interested, but not holding my breath in Canada.

We still don't even have Hulu available, and currently announced plans/pricing are only for US. I'm sure Disney is planning something for other countries... but it's unlikely to be as good a deal and maybe won't even release at the same time.

Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm also in the ad-free Hulu boat, but I also started doing live TV through them.  So, I would need to see yet another package deal.  :^/  I could just switch who I go to for live TV, but that seems like a hassle.  I hope there's plans for the different Hulu versions, and this isn't an oversight.

The real win for all of this is W.I.T.C.H's second season being available for streaming.

I'll get to that season in more detail when I get to it in the stupid thread I'm doing but around the 10th episode W.I.T.C.H's second season's overall plot becomes absolutely absurd. It's to the point where each episode has at least two plot twists that change how the rest of the season is going to play out while at the same time they drop hints left and right forshadowing future plot twists for future episodes (and unlike other Weismann shows W.I.T.C.H. has an ending that all of this is building towards.) and the first 9 or so episodes were basically building up to that madness. It's a remarkable accomplishment in terms of writing for TV but it made the show ill-suited to a weekly broadcast format because if you miss more than one episode in a row you're basically fucked. Disney+ will hopefully finally give ita home more fitting for that season's format.

Does anyone know if Hulu works well through VPNs or if Hulu/Disney will go the Apple direction and just let your Credit Card determine your location.  I really want to get Disney+ but I am in S. Korea.  Everything I have seen just seems to scream that Disney is going to make a service that is worth supporting and watching.

A quick google suggests that Hulu blocks VPN IPs, but some services can get around it.  You may have to shop around.

https://deadline.com/2019/08/disney-international-launches-1202671080/

Price and timing are nice surprises for Canadians.

Content remains to be seen - sometimes there are restrictions or limitations put in place here due to licensing or CRTC (similar to US FCC) requirements. For example, Netflix selection in Canada is quite different; mostly we get less options, but there is also some content here that isn't available (or at least, not yet) in the US.

Still, since Disney will own all of the content they plan to show on D+ you have to figure that it'll be very similar. Glad I bought a Roku device recently, as it seems unlikely they'll roll out a Wii U app (which is what we have been using for most of our streaming needs right now).

The Mandalorian trailer

For BlackNMild2k1: https://youtu.be/aOC8E8z_ifw

Looks like a TV show.... /s

So this is how Disney saves Star Wars.
I'm not into SW, but this looked pretty damn interesting.

My question, and I don't know if it's been asked or answered, but does Disney+ "Netflix" their shows or "Hulu" them?

as in, do we get the whole series at once, or do they do weekly releases?
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Adrock on August 24, 2019, 04:03:29 PM
That’s a good question. I’d prefer Disney release the entire season at once. I haven’t kept track of TV schedules for at least a decade but probably closer to a decade and a half. I go days without watching anything. Then there are times when I have time to watch a bunch of episodes in a row so if new ones aren’t available, I watch something else. Binging is great because is “hides” bad episodes.

I have read somewhere they will release the first couple of episodes together and then change it to a weekly release.

Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: ThePerm on August 25, 2019, 08:49:18 PM
I'd prefer longer seasons. Like 24 episodes a season. But release 3 episodes every week. That way you get the benefits of binging and then not running out of something to watch. A hybrid method. Episodes don't have to be the same length though.

Eh... I'm far more skeptical on this. It might be awesome, or it might not. That trailer didn't do anything for me and I usually get excited for all kinds of Star Wars stuff. Somehow it felt like a (not particularly well done) space western; hopefully that's not how the show actually feels though.

At the very least, it looks like Disney won’t photoshop human eyes on the dogs’ faces this time.

In 20 years, Disney should make cartoon versions of all their live-action remakes.

Cel-Animation: You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on August 26, 2019, 10:35:35 PM
Lady in the Tramp looks better than Lion King and the Jungle Book actually.  I like that it is a period piece, and I think humans already emote on to dogs and pets in general so it will be easier to feel the emotions for these characters than Lion King.  Also I don't think they are CGI dogs which helps get the "right" performance from the animals.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on August 26, 2019, 11:07:44 PM
Adrock:  They won't do Cel-Animation.  They will do cheap 3D animation.  With Lion King they will just retexture the entire movie with a Cel-Shading technique and recast the movie.  Edit the scenes and add a few deleted scenes.  It will be the worst cash grab in history.

In case anyone missed this: Disney will be releasing episodes weekly for Disney+ shows.

Disney is leading the charge against Netflix by returning to weekly episode releases (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2019/8/29/20831410/disney-plus-apple-hulu-netflix-binge-episodes-full-season-drop-vs-weekly-release-streaming-model)

In most cases, I’ll probably just wait until all episodes are released so I can binge.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on September 01, 2019, 04:42:54 PM
Let's hope they drop multiple episodes at series open, then fallback to the weekly schedule afterwards.
Lots of shows take till the second episode to really get into it, so hopefully series /sessions opened are dual episode releases.

Sadly, if you wait until it all drops, you risk spoilers and can't really enagage with the online conversation. :(
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Adrock on September 01, 2019, 08:05:05 PM
Yeah, it’s an unfortunate byproduct of my life. I get busy in spurts so it’s hard for me to keep track of TV schedules. I watch when I have time to watch, and it’s often easiest to knock them out right in a row because I’ll forget what happens. I’m generally pretty good about avoiding spoilers except that time I clicked into BlackNMild’s Marvel spoiler thread. That’s on me though.

Anyway, I just signed up for the D23 three-year subscription. I’m just going to assume/hope I don’t need Hulu or ESPN+. I’ve managed without ESPN+ since ever, and I’ve literally only watched one show on Hulu (Handmaid’s Tale). After the second season, I’ve seen more than a lifetime’s share of women getting kicked in the face and vagina. I’ll stick with The Mandalorian, and I’ll finally get to see Thor: Dark World just to cross that off the list.

I've been online long enough, and seen the quality of conversations there, that this threat no longer bothers me.

Now if someone in real life is watching and discussing, I might be more motivated.

Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: nickmitch on September 03, 2019, 02:13:14 AM
The weekly thing is kinda bold.  I was expecting each show to have between 4-6 episode drop and have the rest of the first seasons come out in intervals to keep people talking.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on September 03, 2019, 02:25:59 AM
The weekly thing is smart while there isn't much content.  It means that people can't just binge and drop the service for a show they like.  It means that you have more time to produce shows over the year spreading the costs out over a longer period.  It means always having something to new to watch each week hopefully.

Plus Disney has much to supplement it's new content with.  All the old movies, all the old TV series, there is plenty to be excited about.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on September 03, 2019, 02:37:34 AM
they also have stuff currently on Netflix that is expiring at or around the end of the year that should be making it's way over to the service, like a bunch of the MCU movies that aren't there at launch, for example.

I know they are already in the process of buying out streaming contracts with other networks for some Disney owned stuff as well, if they haven't already worked the majority of that out.

Besides, considering how AoS would time out their "connected" episodes, I figured the MCU shows on D+ would have to be timed out in some way to coincide with the release of the movies they are connected to.
Title: Re: Disney+

not that it was unexpected, but Disney Afternoons coming to D+!?

I also wonder if they are planning on having a live stream channel that you can click on and it just like tuning into a TV channel with scheduled programming. A good way to catch random stuff you might have otherwise never watched. Then if you like it, you can search for it and go watch the entire series.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Stratos on September 11, 2019, 11:54:51 AM
I'm surprised Netflix hasn't done something like that, setup Pandora-style channels where you pick an interest and it will play random stuff for you. Would help with the indecision/decision-fatigue syndrome people wrestle with when shuffling through the options on Netflix.

Disney+ is still 2 months away from launching, but for those living in the Netherlands, Disney is now running a free trial on Android devices for its new streaming platform.

On the Google Play store, a trial version of the Disney+ app is now available, but only on Android devices in the Netherlands. The trial is completely free and has limited content available.

From the screenshots in the Google Play store, a few new titles have been confirmed including Freaky Friday, Herbie, Tinker Bell Fairy movies, The Jungle Book, Jessie and many more.

It also confirmed they are offering a “Collection” section, which will group together movies and shows into collections, which will make it much easier to navigate.

I feel a cheap 3yr buy in is gonna be well worth the investment. Only wish I could've just bought a 5+ year pass and get it over with.

Both 90s Fox X-men and Spider-man cartoons were on Hulu for a while and nobody cared.

probably because nobody likes to use Hulu and suffer through commercials.

I only have Hulu now, because they gave me a full year of it for $12 on cyber Monday last year.
the companionship with D+ may make me contemplate another year, but literally the only things I've watching on Hulu since having it is the most recent season of AoS and the second series of Naruto (my daughter was obsessed, so I started watching it with her - first 5 seasons of series 1 was on Netflix though)

If they come up with a decent bundle deal, I may extend my Hulu subscription, but chances are, as long as they have commercials, and I can find it streaming elsewhere.... I will watch it elsewhere.

I got that same deal as you did last year. I was paying like $3 extra to not have commercials which made it about the same price as Netflix, but $1 a month is better than what I was paying(like 180 a year?). Most old shows don't have but an introductory commercial though. So no interruptions except between episodes. I really don't watch it though.

Pre-Orders are up for US Viewers

https://preview.disneyplus.com/

not sure what the benefit of a pre-order is now... unless there are limits on usernames.....
or some sort of bonus coming to the first 1 Million subscribers down the line or something, but there option is there if you wish to exercise it.

edit: apparently signing up now get you into the "Founders Circle" which could be important later. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Am I already in the Founders Circle for pre-paying for 3 years of the service?

Had a talk with my family about the Disney+ offer, since I am a rewards member. However, I don't think we're going to bother. None of us really watch television anymore, so Disney+ is just money thrown down the drain.

I was under the impression Disney got the rights when it bought Fox, but I can’t find a definitive answer to it. Futurama is currently streaming on Hulu and Comedy Central. Maybe Disney has to wait for current deals to expire. Futurama was one of the main reasons I was excited to sign up for Disney+.

Hard to say. Viacom might own Futurama now. According to wikipedia it says 20th century owns it.

Also, if I recall Disney said there would be no R rated content on Disney+

But they never said TVMA content. :D

err maybe they confirmed the MA thing later on.

I thought Viacom had it, since last I watched it on TV, it was streaming on Comedy Central.  I guess it makes sense if Fox still owned the rights, since they made the show, and were just syndicating.  But I thought the ownership might've gotten mucky after Cartoon Network wouldn't pay for new episodes and it wasn't clear how much CC was paying for the movies.  But then again, this could all be my poor recollection of events.

Hocus Pocus is my favorite Halloween movie. I’ve wanted a sequel for like 25 years. I don’t want to get too excited. I’ll believe it when I see it.

I haven’t seen Hocus Pocus in a while. I don’t know if it holds up.

I forgot to mention they are hopeful on getting the original cast back for the sequel as well.

My daughter squeeled when I told her and wants to "go see it" the minute it comes out.
I didn't tell her it would be from home, because she doesn't really know what Disney+ is just yet.

what also makes this news kinda funny, is that we were costume shopping just yesterday, and there were Hocus Pocus branded costumes in the Spirit store, and my daughter had gotten all excited about it, and started talking about the movie. As soon as I got home, I saw the news about the sequel coming to D+.

While I'm confident in D+ making money, $25M per episode seems like overkill.  They're certainly priced right for the content they're offering, and the content itself has mass appeal (everyone loves the old Disney animated features and the Marvel movies).  But doing the math, there's like 8 Marvel shows coming, with maybe 10 episodes/season at $25M per episode.  That's $2 billion for content creation.  The article only references 3 shows (I assume the others haven't started), and I'm sure that's the max with The Mandalorian "only" costing $15M/ep, but that's still a big bet.

I guess it's in line with their low estimate of 60 million subscribers in 5 years, which would be like $5B in revenue.  But who knows what their content creation would look like then, plus all the costs they'll be looking to recover from the initial investments.

But since they will outright own all of this new content, they won't have to worry about "renewing" shows like Netflix and others do. It is always their content without residual maintenance costs to keep them up.
Title: Re: Disney+

Disney is taking a big bet the first 2 years or so, because they need to.  They need to get that BIG viewer base year one, around the world.  Disney probably also knows that movie theaters will eventually die, and the cable business model is fluctuating, and the home media sales are not what they used to be.  You better have an answer for the future or you will die in the past.

With this big push Disney can't be ignored and the value that Disney is pushing with content alone is second to none.  Seriously, Disney could have charged double what they are charging and still be a bargain.  But that is also the point.  They need to be the streaming service people choose over all the new ones coming out.

Right now, the Warner Bros streaming services are split to 2 services HBO max, and their DC stuff, and I think one more.  If Warner Bros got smart and combined them into super value app then they would be pretty darn compelling.  As for the Peacock, who knows what that will eventually have for value, and the streaming service with Star Trek has the Trek fans, but that is all.  Disney, needs to make sure they are one of the 2 streaming services EVERYONE worldwide decides to buy.

You might be thinking of HBO Now, which is the standalone HBO streaming app. HBO Max is set to launch next year and include DC contentment. But they have the benefit of being an assumed premium. Still, even $15 for HBO is a lot. And any more, even with what they're adding is…meh.

HBO has always depended on having one or two tentpole shows that keep people subscribed, and I'm not sure they have any right now since Game of Thrones ended. Westworld, I guess, though that's a far cry from some of the giants they've had over the years.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on October 25, 2019, 05:02:54 AM
Yes, you are right.  HBO Now, Sorry.  But the point still is that Warner Bros needs to consolidate.  If each company only has one streaming service fairly priced then they could basically make slightly more money than with the regular cable contracts, but also be fairly priced for consumers to have most of what they want.  Honestly, I would rather pay for 2 or 3 monthly services than go to the movies these days.  Yeah, movie theaters are nice and the screen and sound are great, but most things it is not worth the price and it is very easy to have a bad experience.  I only do tentpole big budget movies now, because I would rather watch a drama in the intimacy of my home.

I watched it with our kids last week.  It's still a very cute movie.  Not remarkably great, but since there aren't a lot of great Halloween movies that aren't horror movies, I think it's up there as one of the better ones.

They're still churning out new stuff.  Watchmen just started, and there's a comedy or two on there that people seem to like.  Nothing GoT level, at least not yet, but still good ****.  A lot of Netflix originals have been noteworthy, but not good.  Ironically, they do better for standup than HBO, but that's about it.

I think HBO Max will be WB consolidating, but they'll be consolidating things that should come at a discount, in the D+ to Netflix range, with something that itself is already going for $15.  I have limited hope it'll be a real competitor in the stream wars for people who don't already have HBO.

Worth noting that likely uses fuzzy Hollywood math.  I'm sure some of that cost will be shouldered on product placement advertising, taxpayer-funded discounts for filming in certian states/countries, and licensing agreements.

I think because Star Wars is ultimately a really fun world that you want to visit and see stories in.  So you forgive the many many mistakes that is made in previous movies.  And the story just looks fun.  It looks like a nice Space Western.

Last minute update on D+ brings the majority of MCU movies to D+ at launch
https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/11/20959998/disney-plus-launch-marvel-titles-iron-man-captain-america-winter-soldier

In addition to the 6 original titles announced for launch (Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel), Disney just announced about a week or so ago that Endgame would also drop a month early to make D+ launch. Now they just also announced that they are bringing the following title to launch;
Iron Man 2
Thor
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy
Captain America: Civil War
Doctor Strange
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

which just leaves a few titles stranded on Netflix for the time being (Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, and Thor: Ragnarok), and TIH till Paramount gives up the goods.

I feel like there one or two not being accounted for.... but I can't pinpoint what I'm missing right now. It seems like their all there, but I only counted 21 titles....

edit:
I forgot they can't stream Spider-Man: Home Coming and Spider-Man: Far From Home

Disney+ is out.  The design and the interface is good.  Though, I have had some problems with series and account buttons overlapping.  I have also had some problems with loading and the design getting stuck.  I don't know if it is a problem on my end or the problem is with the servers and bandwidth.  I am curious if others are having problems and if Disney has enough servers and bandwidth for this service.  I am sure they will get things ironed out.

As it is, I have only watched one show and one short.  I watched the Jeff Goldblum show just to see if service was working.  It is a strange show, and I am not quite sure what I watched or if it was good.

School was cancelled locally. On the day after a 4 day weekend, when local weather wasn't that bad.
I'm sure that Disney+ had nothing to do with it.

(The interface on my Roku is... ok.  There are some odd things happening when trying to browse content, and search wasn't working when I tried. Profile icons didn't work correctly in some cases. Might just be me, or due to VPN-related issues. I feel like there will probably be some updates coming, but as long as it's functional and the movies play, people shouldn't be too up-in-arms from anything I saw.)

Hey, Darkwing Duck and Ducktales is here... so who can complain?!

I happen to wake up at 3am, and couldn't immediately fall asleep. and while looking for and failing to find something to turn on, I remembered that D+ should have went live in the middle of the night.

I ended up watching the first episode of The Mandalorian.
It was cool, i might have blinked extra long at some points.... but it was around 4am, so it's not surprising that I might not have caught it all.
Weekly format on a streaming platform is gonna take some getting used to, but I'll most likely be checking out the rest of the show as it airs.
The pace seemed a little slow, and the main character a little dry, but the effects and the action where good. I'm sure it picks up, now that they got the first ep out the way.

Apparently you actually can get the bundle discount for Disney+ with the ad-free version of Hulu, which makes this more tempting for me, but I still don't think there's enough on there to make it worth it to me right now. I love The Simpsons, but I already have the DVDs of them and they're in the right aspect ratio when I watch those versions.

The Simpsons’ aspect ratio is messed up on Disney+ (https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/12/20961067/simpsons-aspect-ratio-disney-plus-43-169-streaming-fxx)

The older seasons (i.e. the good ones) are cropped. I suspect Disney will eventually fix this and offer the original 4:3 aspect ratio. For now, I’ll deal. The Simpsons is a perfect show to put on in the background only to inevitably stop what I’m doing and watch for a while.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: NWR_insanolord on November 12, 2019, 09:54:56 PM
The previous streaming home of The Simpsons, the aptly named Simpsons World, included both the original 4:3 versions and the 16:9 ones they used for the reruns on FX, and I imagine Disney+ will end up giving both options. I know some people really don't like having the bars on the side, even if stretching it out of cropping it compromises the artistic intent.

So any hot take reactions on D+, a couple of days in?

I don't think it's something we'll keep... although it's awesome to have quick access to so many classics, we don't have enough spare time to justify multiple streaming services and there isn't enough I've found appealing for day-to-day (ie: short burst) watching.

But the price is just low enough that I might rethink that for the kids. Just for the blockbusters alone, it's hard to argue $7 a month; throw in all kinds of classic Disney TV cartoons, and it's a tempting proposition. They really kept pricing in impulse buy territory, and while I initially thought that was a mistake maybe keeping people hooked while it's cheap for the first year and then slowly raising the price will pay off in the long run?
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on November 14, 2019, 04:27:58 PM
At the moment Disney+ has positioned itself as the definitive secondary streaming service it really is a specialty service for families. The people saying that the service doesn’t have good original programs right now are right. The lineup is weak. But the potential is very strong.

Disney+ will NOT include Song of the South. (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/song-south-dumbos-jim-crow-scene-will-not-be-disney-1203624)  Finally answering that question.

It's version of Dumbo will also have the Jim Crow scene deleted.

UPDATE! Disney+ leaves in the Jim Crow scenes in "Dumbo", offers a disclaimer on sensitive content (https://variety.com/2019/film/news/disney-plus-outdated-cultural-depictions-dumbo-1203403518/)

This is a nice reverse of course and possibly opens up an opportunity to release Song of the South in the future, but that's just me speculating.

I saw an article on how to get D+ w/ Ad Free Hulu and ESPN+ for $13.99

FIRST: you sign up for Ad Free Hulu for $13.99(?)mo
THEN: you sign up for D+, Hulu ad supported, and ESPN+ bundle for $12.99 using the same exact email address

NOW: you will then get a $5.99mo credit on your original Ad Free Hulu account, and only be paying $1 extra for the triple bundle, but with Ad Free Hulu

you will have 2 billing accounts as your your original Hulu account will be crediting you.
I don't know if this actually works, but it was supposedly put out there by the Disney+ twitter account.

I only pay $1 for Hulu a month for the next 2 weeks (BF/cyber monday deal from last year....), but I'd actually probably pay for the service if I could get ad-free for only $6mo, and you throw in ESPN+ for free.

Yeah, that disclaimer is also before several other movies and shows. I can get why for Lady and the Tramp, but I could not think of why Jungle Book got it last night. Waking up this morning I remembered the ending scene with the girl and her song. Some shows got the disclaimer solely because of tobacco imagery too.

I still think Warner Bros has the better disclaimer, but this is a good start from Disney.

I think it's worth pointing out problems where they exist and using media to spur discussion about how things have changed and why.

I was watching the Lonesome Ghosts yesterday and I noticed most all old cartoons have a disclaimer that says "may contain outdated cultural depictions" They throw this disclaimer on most anything old it looks like. Except stuff with Tobacco. If it has tobacco in it then this content marker disappears. It says "Contains tobacco references"

So what is on everyone's play lists?

After browsing a bit, I want to watch:
* Return to Oz - Haven't seen this in ages, but have nostalgic memories.
* Willow - Don't know if I've ever actually seen this movie, but remember the NES game fondly.
* Nightmare Before Christmas - Just want to see the extra materials, to see how they stack up vs our old DVD release.

At the moment Disney+ has positioned itself as the definitive secondary streaming service it really is a specialty service for families. The people saying that the service doesn’t have good original programs right now are right. The lineup is weak. But the potential is very strong.

That description sounds right on the money.

anyone else having D+ playback issues in Chrome?

tons of video studdering, mostly on the Marvel videos I try to watch, as The Mandalorian played smoothly, and Lady and the Tramp played smoothly last week when we watched that as well.

I had to open Opera, which is much smoother, but still not perfect..

anyone else experiencing this?
Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Youtube and everything else streams perfectly fine at all times on Chrome. Only an issue with D+.

Was over at a friend's house, who pretty much tied me to a chair & forced me to watch episodes 1-3 of The Mandalorian. It's fine, I guess (I got him back when we had to get through the torture that is Steins;Gate 0). What was really bugging me was the movement in that show. Is it just me, or are the characters moving unusually fast, like they're at 1.5x speed? It was really distracting.

I have struggled to get on Disney + it often says that the internet connection is too slow.  I read an article describing that they had no idea how much demand they were going to have and basically the core program was under performing.  That they were going to be rewriting the program from the ground up within the next 2 or three weeks.  I really want to watch some shows on the service, but so far I have only been able to watch like 4 full episodes of various shows and movies.

I'm playing it on my computer

6core 3.3Ghz
16GB Ram

560Mb down, 18Mb up from Comcast

If that's not enough to run Disney+ then I don't know what to say.
I figure it has to be some compatibility with the Chrome browser (and to a much lesser extent the Opera browser)
I have not tried the MS Edge browser.

Now that I think about it, the things that did play smoothly, were actually played from my Nvidia Shield on a different TV

Are people still watching The Mandalorian?  I haven't seen the latest episode, but am looking for opinions. So far it's been pretty mediocre for me, and feels like they are just pulling well-worn storylines from other genres and shoehorning them into the Star Wars universe.  This isn't terrible... but also isn't very compelling for me.

They hype machines says I need to watch. Are things actually getting better, or are they staying roughly the same and people just easily swayed?
Title: Re: Disney+

I like The Mandalorian so far. It isn’t setting the world on fire, but I’m getting what I want from it. The last episode didn’t particularly move the story forward. It’s the only episode that felt extraneous. Right now, it feels like you could skip it and not miss a beat. That’s my only real criticism. With only eight episodes, I would have thought they’d keep the story moving.

Here’s some unsolicited advice: if you think it’s mediocre, watch something else. I don’t mean to be dismissive. I hate-watched The Walking Dead for three additional seasons before stepping away. I invested so much time already that I felt compelled to keep watching. I could see if The Mandalorian was in the last season and you had been watching the whole time and you just want to see how it all ends. I think it’s early enough that you can dust your hands off, say, “Not for me,” and hopefully find something that really draws you in.

I'm enjoying it a lot.  It's certainly not top shelf stuff in terms of story telling but I enjoy it for what it is.

As for Adrock's advice....  ordinarily I would agree.  No point wasting time watching something you're not enjoying (which is why I bailed from the Arrowverse shows) but I would suggest this is the exception to the rule.  It's really short.  Which in itself is one of the complaints to be leveled at the show, but the silver lining in that is that it's quick to watch and finish so it won't take long to get through.  After season one ends you can decide if you want to bother with season two.

Sound advice.

I'm not going to avoid Mandalorian, but will probably wait until the season is done so that I can go through the remaining episodes in a shorter amount of time. Others thinking about watching should still jump in; it's a decent enough series, if uninspired. Don't let my ambivalence towards the series turn you away.

So, I watched all the available episodes.  It's pretty good?  I like it a lot.  The western feel works really well.  The plot isn't super deep, but each episode feels like its own adventure, which is great.  While I'm not hooked on the story (they aren't exactly ending episodes on cliffhangers), I'm still excited to see where it goes.  The story is in between the original and sequel trilogies, right?  I'm curious what becomes of Baby Yoda, since there's no mention of it in the current films, but I guess it'd still be a teen?  With no one to train it?
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on December 16, 2019, 05:29:44 PM
Nickmitch:  I like the fact they aren't ending stories on cliffhangers.  Cliffhangers are a television device and comic device that is super annoying.  So the self-contained episodes are nice.  My problem with the series is that the writing and acting are just so poor.  Sure, each episode really feels like Star Wars and that in and of itself makes it amazing to watch...but it could and should be so much more.

As for baby Yoda, the universe is a very big place.  I like to think that even after Order 66 that pockets of Jedi survived because they went into hiding, and the story we know isn't necessarily the last Jedi, but just the family drama of the Chosen One.  So baby Yoda could be anywhere, and I like the Mandalorian traveling with him as a body guard because it humanizes him...but I also want to see him without being a baby sister.

As someone else not crazy about the series so far, "poor" is probably a bit strong? I'd lean more towards uninspired.

It certainly feels like the series had more potential than it will capitalize on, but it's still a fun enough romp if you don't bring in expectations of what it should have been. Just seeing some background into less traveled paths of the Star Wars universe is a nice option.

The acting isn't distractingly bad for me, but it's not like the writing calls for anyone to do any heavy acting.  And yeah, there could be more, but I think where you can see a lack of ambition, you can also see it being grounded.

They took to long to do the obvious thing and fold Marvel TV under Marvel Studios, as I guess they were waiting for the rollout of D+to make the transition.

But had they just pulled the trigger silently 1yr prior, D+ could've been launch windowing with a few MCU related properties to carry us to fall of 2020.

Can we get some One Shots at the very least!?

Title: Re: Disney+

BnM:  I think the Marvel TV being folded into the Marvel Films also has to deal with the grand plan of the Infinity Saga.  I think Disney and Marvel Films really wanted a full movie experience.  Now that big gamble is over with, they are doing something different.  Smaller and more intimate...television is perfect for that.

I also think that television is dying and television budgets are harder to justify big expensive shows and productions.  There are a lot of expectations with television that networks want. But all of those things go away with streaming.  Need fewer than the 12 to 24 order shows, streaming that is normal.  Do you need variable run times for your episodes that don't always hit the 24 minute 45 minutes models of television.  Done.  Do you need larger budgets, that can be done too.

I do find it annoying to wait for original content, but Disney Plus is still hell of a good deal, and I am sure Disney also wants to make sure they have some new first run shows coming out as they roll their service out to the world that will be new to everyone.  They are not going to get that world penetration until late 2020 maybe even 2021.  We will see what happens.  I can wait.

Just yesterday I watched Thor Ragnarok again and then Lilo and Stitch.  Man, Lilo and Stitch is a great movie but surprisingly emotional.

Just yesterday I watched Thor Ragnarok again and then Lilo and Stitch.  Man, Lilo and Stitch is a great movie but surprisingly emotional.

No joke on Lilo and Stich being emotional! I forgot how visceral the sisters bickering was. My niece and nephew were curious about seeing it when we were all at my parent's for Thanksgiving, and they were a little shook by the fighting as they were both rather young and a bit sheltered. I think my parents were about to turn it off but I talked the kids through it explaining how it was hard for them because of their mom and dad dying and so the older sister had to take care of the younger and they were working through how that would work, and it was a bit hard and scarry to go through. It was a good growth moment for the kids I think, because it showed them a very human and very real situation.

I subscribe to the Don Bluth logic for kid shows (paraphrased): "you can show a kid most any scary or terrifying image and as long as there is a happy ending, they will be fine".

It makes me appreciate Lilo & Stitch even more.

D+ has got a fair bit to hold my interest yet.

Sure, Mandalorian was by far the trump card, but now I'm making my way through the Clone Wars series.  Will start Rebels after that.

The World According to Jeff Goldblum is a bit of fun if you like his style.

The current list per the above is:

And more may be coming in the future!

And there are films that are already set to leave Disney Plus. According to a report from Bloomberg, a few of the service’s biggest titles, like Black Panther, are currently set to lapse back to Netflix in 2026, where they were before Disney Plus launched.

That 2026 date is pretty far off, and who knows what streaming platforms will look like then, so I think Disney and Netflix will work something out.

The only thing surprising is the stealth nature, as you'd expect Disney to be as up front as possible with announcing what/when/why.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: nickmitch on January 03, 2020, 01:43:27 PM
It should've been a bit more expected, but the rhetoric around the launch was that D+ would be the home for all Disney content going forward.  They've since walked that back a bit.  I was surprised about the Netflix thing, to be honest.  We knew Disney had to work out something to get rights from them, but I didn't expect reversion to be in the cards.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on January 03, 2020, 03:01:43 PM
Yeah, some pre-existing contacts gotta be honored.... or renegotiated.

It is surprising, because they left us under the impression that they had worked most of this out, but they got most of that stuff for the launch and into the new year, so I guess that's something. It's a relatively minor amount of content temporarily leaving the platform, but still something to be surprised about.

I just wanna say, I got Disney+ so I could catch the last season of TCW and I am very disappointed in the service overall. I found it dropped frames left and right for no real reason (I'm not even the kind of person who usually notices that kind of thing so when I'm noticing it there's a big problem) and because it barely supports any devices it's a big hassle to get it set up on my TV.

I can't believe they still haven't fixed The Simpsons on this service. I don't really care since I have the DVDs anyway, but considering people were complaining about that from day 1 and it's still wrong  that's just ridiculous.

is it the aspect ratio?

Yes, the older seasons that should be 4:3 are cropped to 16:9, sometimes cutting off jokes.

Before Disney+ launched the show was on a site called Simpsons World that you needed a login for the FX cable channel to access, and it offered both versions, so they should definitely have the files available to them. It also offered the ability to listen to the DVD commentary tracks, which are great.

Disney may not have had the functionality to switch between aspect ratios in its Disney+ player. Putting on my IT hat, there’s no way that should take six months to implement so my guess it just got pushed down the priority list. I suppose the most important thing to Disney was that people have been able to watch The Simpsons since launch.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Spak-Spang on May 11, 2020, 06:48:39 PM
I mean Disney needs to get the player running smoothly and start adding countries to the list that can show its material.  I also think Disney+ will need to evolve and be willing to add more things for adults.  But that is another thing entirely.
Title: Re: Disney+

If it's an IT issue, I think it makes sense it's taken a while.  D+ is still expanding what and where it plays on, and there were some bandwidth issues at launch that had to be ironed out.  So, I can see how it could fall down the priority list.

So Disney Plus just announced that instead of having to wait until fall next year, we can watch Hamilton (filmed stage performance) on July 3 THIS YEAR!

Man, it'll really be hard to dethrone Netflix and PBS as my two favorite streaming services, but Disney Plus is just DELIVERING on SOOOO many fronts for my streaming needs these days. Heck, I just rewatched National Treasure on this service.

I can finally see what this Hamilton play is all about, since I am a musical fan but kinda snooty on which I deem to be good. I don't have a feeling one way or another, but do wonder if the craze around this one is a bit overrated.

I love Phantom and Les Miserables, adore Scarlet Pimpernel and Jeckyll & Hyde, liked Mrs Doubtfire, but found Wicked to be disappointing. So curious where this one falls for me. I loved the Wicked soundtrack that I have listened to for years but wasn't able to go see it until last year and it just felt...disjointed. Like it was trying to be too many things at once. I know a lot of my drama/musical friends loved it at initial release. I suspect part of it was the viewing environment (awkward meetup with co-works, hot building with no air/AC capabilities) or that the references are dated for people who missed out on the original airing and the tropes presented in the show are a little tired in 2020. Could also be that I had formed a completely different interpretation of some parts based solely on the soundtrack.

Either way, will be nice to see something like this on TV since going to musicals is out of the question for the indeterminate future.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Kairon on May 13, 2020, 06:56:58 PM
I've come to the realization recently that I like musicals. But like you, I actually didn't enjoy Wicked that much when I finally saw it. It has a handful of songs I enjoyed but overall the stage production... I guess I can just chalk it up to taste. I actually haven't seem that many live, just film adaptations that I enjoy to varying degrees.

I'm actually not all that familiar with the music of Hamilton so this'll be pretty new to me all said and done.

I've listened to the soundtrack a few times; it's really good.  But I've never seen the play.  The few times it was in an area where I was, the tickets sold out either too quickly for me to decide if the price was worth or for me to even notice they'd gone on sale.  So, I'm looking forward to the premiere.

The Wrong Missy

This was a David Spade movie on Netflix. I originally went into it thinking it was a series for some reason, and after what seemed to be an unusually long episode, I checked the time only to realized this was actually a movie. I had previously watched the trailer and fired it up on a whim after finishing "Magic for Humans" which was also quite entertaining even if a little on the cheesy side.
But The Wrong Missy was pretty funny, and I can't remember the main girls name, but she is F'n Crazy LOL, a little too over the top at times, but most of the time just a sauced up lunatic on a rampage. LMAO. Basic premise is Dude is having trouble dating, and goes on a blind date. He ends up meeting up w/ this psychotic chick named Missy and almost immediately tries to bail.
After ghosting her, he eventually meets his dream girl by accident in passing, gets her number and attempts to pursue that relationship. Things don't go as planned and let the fun begin.

Don't go into this thinking it's one of the great comedies that will have you rolling from beginning to end. Lower your expectations, as this is a perfectly acceptable way to pass a Sunday afternoon with some silly stupid **** (Rob Schneider has an appearance in this) that if you're in the right mood is sure to get more than a few laughs out of you, especially if you're a David Spade kinda guy (which I am not).

Sure. The more people you have, the easier it is to justify that. I’m one person in quarantine so I can wait until Mulan is on regular, pleb Disney+. When I go to the theater, I mostly go to matinees so depending on the location, a ticket is $7 to $10.

For comparison, Trolls World Tour was $20 to rent and $25 to buy.

And aren't new Blu Ray releases $20-30? I don't think this pricing is particularly odd, just inflated with the Disney premium.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Stratos on August 05, 2020, 12:30:56 PM
Its not a bad price, but this isn't a theater experience. I would expect to get to "keep" the film available for unlimited re-watches at that price until it is "released to general audiences". I'm sure this is partly an experiment on their part (as well as a production cost mitigation trick) so future options and prices for this kind of thing will be shaped by how many people bite on this. I'm already avoiding all the Disney remakes so not a difficult choice for me.

That's Disney's best bet right now though.  They may not get billion dollar box grossing movies for a while, so might as well focus on the growing business.  They still need to see how the theatre business shakes out post COVID, so there's a big question mark there.

I decided to watch the 1992 animated X-Men series - I haven't seen it since it originally aired.  It... does not hold up as well as I would have hoped, but it is still enjoyable.  The fact it's very much not episodic and a kid's animated show from the early 90s helps a lot.

However, the episodes are very much out of order, with events being referenced that hasn't happened yet and Jean Grey's funeral episode taking after her return in the Dark Phoenix four-parter.

Taking a break from it, I remembered there being an X-Men themed episode of Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, so I decided to watch it.  Also not an amazing show, but fun.  However, I noticed an episode was missing - like, they just went from 12 to 14.  Google tells me there's a Red Skull episode with plenty of Hitler and Nazi references.  Shame they've hidden it away.

Any thoughts of this Disney 18+ or Disney Star label for Disney + shows?

Personally, I don't mind a secondary app or location, but I don't want to pay another subscription.  Raise the price maybe but Disney can easily just add the content to Disney + and pull even more content from Hulu which is unnecessary streamer except for live TV options.  I think once contract obligations go away with Hulu you will see shows disappear and go to other streaming services.  Disney really needs to open the floodgates to Fox's deep catalog of films, and Disney's Miramax labels and more...and right now Disney + is feeling kinda small.  Dropping in adult content would really beef up the catalog.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Adrock on November 27, 2020, 03:41:17 PM
Ideally, if Disney wants to offer rated R/TV-14 and up content, lock it behind parental controls on Disney+. I don’t want another app, another subscription, or a price hike.

Alternatively, it might just be easier to offer that content on Hulu and add more bundles. Does anyone really want ESPN+? How about a $9.99/$12.99 bundle with Disney+ and Hulu with ads/no ads? Yes, that is technically another app, another subscription, and a price hike. However, I don’t want another Disney-related one on top of them.

Anecdotally, I barely watch Disney+. It was worth it for the three-year dealie I signed up for, but I’m not sure I’ll renew once it expires. I don’t think I really need Hulu either (access to Futurama and Archer are tempting). I get by on Netflix and occasionally checking Prime Video.
Title: Re: Disney+

My suggestion was to just hide the TV-M/R content behind parental controls. And if they can lock the adult accounts behind a quick remote password like on the Amazon Fire devices, it shouldn't even be a problem. Kids have to use their own accounts, parents take 3 seconds to do a password using the directional pad on the remote.

I'm in the same camp as you guys. If Disney wants to hide "mature" content behind another app, that's gonna be an annoyance.  If they want to hide it behind another subscription, that's gonna be a no-go for me.  To be honest, I don't think D+ has quite enough content, so it'd be a really bold move for them to try and offer another streaming service.
Title: Re: Disney+

As it is, when it comes to streaming, my order for checking for things to watch are:
1) Netflix
2) HBO Max
3) Netflix
4) Hulu
5) Prime Video
6) Netflix
7) HBO Max
8) Internet on my phone, including IG/Youtube
9) Netflix
10) Disney +

Basically, I already know what I'm looking for on Disney +, so unless I specifically want to watch those few things.... I'm looking elsewhere. There is not enough content I'm unfamiliar with, or looking forward to, to just casually browse the catalog in hopes of something interesting to watch.
They NEED a Disney Teen+/17+/Post Puberty section to fill out the catalog.
If I wasn't watching The Mandalorian or MCU rewatch, I literally don't have a need to even turn to Disney+ at the moment. 1st year has passed... Still waiting on my new Marvel Content.
At this point, I feel they should credit me another year, just for having purchased the first 3 upfront on faith of content that hasn't really been delivered.

There's some adult swim stuff and Studio Ghibli, which really makes the service for me.  I already liked HBO programming, but adding things like the Adventure Time specials and the aforementioned really puts it over.  They did a great job, imo with the value proposition.

As far as when deciding what to watch, I either go into an app with intention based on what I'm currently binging (e.g., the other night I wanted to watch The Mandalorian, so I went straight there).  But if I'm just browsing, I'll honestly go to YouTube unless I want to sit down and watch a movie.

Disney is planning a 4hour Investors meeting....
Speculation is that there will be LOTS of announcements to be made for D+ going forward.
We all know Marvel Studios is backed up on projects right now.... a handful that were supposed to be released already have been pushed into 2021, and all the projects for 2021 are under development in some manner already as well, so expect an avalanche of MCU projects/announcements for 2021.

Also with WB just announcing the HBO Max/Theater plans for 2021.... makes you wonder what Disney has planned.... will we get Black Widow at home on D+ Premium Rental?

Marvel/Disney are past due on a decision for a Black Widow release.  It's been a year since the first trailer, and the pandemic isn't going away just yet.  I know they want their billion dollar tentpoles, but those may be a ways off.  Also, with D+ content and feature films understandably delayed, it'll be nice to see what's on the schedule for the coming year.

Will Hulu Be Folded Into Disney+ Because There's Strength in Numbers? (https://collider.com/will-hulu-be-folded-into-disney-plus/)

Quote from: Collider article
For more than a year now, there has been speculation that Disney might one day fold Hulu into its Disney+ streaming service, and sure enough, Collider is hearing that multiple Hulu executives have been leaving or let go from the streaming service in anticipation of the move, which makes a lot of sense from a business perspective.

The working theory is that there's strength in numbers, and The Walt Disney Company would look much more appealing to Wall Street investors if it could boast of having 110 million subscribers on a single service, rather than 73.7 million on Disney+ and 36.6 million on Hulu. It simply makes more sense to combine the two streaming services into one single juggernaut that appeals to both families and adults.

It probably makes a decent amount of sense now that Disney owns Fox and the other major content owners are in the process of moving their stuff off of Hulu and to their own streaming platforms. As the weirdo who currently gets Hulu but not Disney+ I wouldn't mind getting access to that stuff as long as the price is less than the cost of both of them right now.

I'm reading that quote as "it makes sense because it could bump the stock price", but the stock price has pretty much already returned to pre-COVID numbers and Disney will certainly benefit from the release of the vaccine(s).  I'm also not buying the math here.  Disney already pushed people to get both services by offering a bundle that included ESPN+, so there's gotta be at least some overlap.  Now, how much overlap is an interesting question, but I think it could be a lot.

I mean I could see other aspects of the merging the 2 together that we may not consider.

1) Bandwidth.  The potential of freeing up bandwidth being used in 2 services to only be used for one might play a part in this.

2) Contracts ending with shows.  Hulu used to be a service where many of the companies had shares so there was no larger majority owner.  Now Disney is the big stock holder after they got Fox...so I could see other companies wanting to move their series off of Hulu and onto their own streamer...once Hulu begins losing properties folding it into Disney Plus (if when Disney + decides to add adult content) makes sense.

3) Consolidating services into a single streamer is more comfortable for consumers and it helps add value to your product.  People are already tired of the numerous streaming services and they have a number in their head how many they will subscribe to.  I bet most people only want to subscribe to 2 or 3.  So if you can show your streamer to meet the needs of the whole family you are going to get that money.

4) The Competition is getting stronger. Netflix remains a juggernaut and has built itself an empire that can survive even losing legacy shows because of its strong original content.  HBO Max has the WB backed legacy films and television with the HBO brand that has been around forever and has tons of great original series and if things get desperate they can even go deeper and deeper into that HBO library.  Now willing with Warner Bros giving a years worth of box office movies straight to HBO Max that is hard to compete with.

Spak, I agree that there's a lot of benefit to merging the services.  I do think that Disney may want to wait and see how things play out for a little bit.  We're just into the second year of D+, and it's been quite a year at that.  While merging the two would certainly grow the combined base and help it compete, I think it's a little too early for that move.

I mean it is true.  But if Disney wants to just appease investors.  That number of subscribers looks bigger.  Also, if Disney is going to add mature content then Hulu makes less sense in general.  The only question is...Hulu is still just a US service and Disney is trying to position Disney+ as an international service.  So, would it be easier to figure out how to stream all the Hulu shows slowly on Disney+ or move Hulu internationally?
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: nickmitch on December 06, 2020, 11:01:43 PM
That's a great question that I suppose depends on what issues does Hulu have facing an international rollout?  It's likely (without knowing anything or even looking it up) network licensing/distribution issues, which don't go away easily.  With D+, it's all content they control and have held on to tightly, so it might be easier to move Hulu content that they can control into D+ progressively for the foreign markets.

As for Disney making mature content, I think it's gonna depend on what the content is.  I think it makes sense to keep Deadpool on D+ as it'd be the sole place for MCU content, but anything that's more "Fox" than "Disney" might make more sense on Hulu.  But I would like to see what other mature content Disney plans to make.

That's a fair concern. Does Disney want something like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which they own now, on Disney+ along with all their other stuff?

If you believe all the rumors combined with actual announcements, there are at least five different Star Wars shows coming. You have the Boba Fett mini series, the Ahsoka show, the Obi-Wan show, the "new rumored trilogy w/ Ahsoka", the rebels sequel show, and the Bad Batch, and there was an announced film from Kevin Feige as well. This isn't even counting other less credible rumors and old announcements that may or may not be dead.

Disney Plus is increasing its price to $8 a month starting in March 2021 (https://www.theverge.com/2020/12/10/22165869/disney-price-hike-united-states-bundle)

My knee-jerk reaction to this: **** ALL the way off.

After thinking about this a little more, my more nuanced reaction is I don’t think Disney really did anything to justify the price increase. It’s marquee exclusive/original show is The Mandalorian which I like. Wandavision premieres in about a month, then right around when Falcon and the Winter Solider drops, y’all raise the price by a dollar. I guess. 🤷‍♀️

I always expected a price hike, just not this soon. Maybe Disney had to swerve due to COVID-19 affecting its theme parks and whatnot. I’m kind of glad I signed up for three years up front, but the sub-$5 price helps me justify paying for something I don’t use especially often. Once that deal ends, I can probably just sign up for a month here and there to catch up on shows (bring over Futurama and maybe I’ll reconsider). Instead of paying $79.99 for a year, I may do $7.99 a few times a year. Even then, that’s just the current announced pricing. This is only going to get worse. Disney is raising the price when it doesn’t have a ton of original content. When it finally does with all the Marvel and Star Wars shows in the pipeline, I can see this getting ugly fast. I currently pay $13.85 per month for Netflix, and that took like a decade. I just cannot justify another monthly streaming subscription as the prices increase. That’s mostly due to lack of time.

It's going up $1, not bad... but as stated, a little unearned based on current offerings, but the service is pretty damn cheap as is, so it's not too bad.

Even after paying for the first 3 years upfront, I really feel that Disney should reward us early 3yr adopters with an extra year at a discounted price after having next to nothing worthwhile to subscribe for during the 1st year. We deserve an extension on the discount if you ask me.

I think that because the D+ content volume issue has so much to do with the pandemic, I'm a little more relaxed about it.  I wish they put out more stuff over the past year, and I agree with BnM that offering a discount for the 3yr buyers would be nice since we prepaid for a year that mostly wasn't.  The amount of stuff coming out feels like a flood of content to justify a price hike, but honestly, they can just give me the loot and let me decide how I feel in March.

I'm much more annoyed by Hulu's annual price hike, since that service has felt more stagnant to me and has had UI/functionality issues for some time.

Also annoying because it is the only service with ads unless you want to pay an exorbitant premium. The potential to remove ads would be why I am hopeful they roll Hulu into D+.

I use them for cable as well, so I just said "**** it" and went all out.  One issue is that some content is there because of the live TV, and I can't skip commercials.  But other stuff is there because Hulu, and I never know which is which.

If I'm not mistaken, Hulu with no ads is still cheaper than Netflix. It's like $2 a month, well worth it if you use the service.

You and I agree, my wife does not. We also get Netflix costs covered by our phone plan so Netflix will always win out until that perk eventually goes away.

Though I do see her point, as we already have a lot of subscription services. Disney bundle w/ Hulu and ESPN, Netflix, Amazon, Nintendo Online.

I thought it was more than $2 but maybe it is different when bundled? $2 is easier to swallow (and we split costs with her sister, so that would only be a dollar), but with the hike in D+ costs it may dash my hopes of getting her on board anytime soon.

So I've got Disney+ now since I already had Hulu and ESPN+ and I figured it was worth the extra $2 for the bundle. I'm not sure what to watch, though. I'm not really a fan of the superhero genre so the Marvel stuff doesn't appeal to me. What else is on there that people here are enjoying?

”Go see a Star War.” (https://youtu.be/L0T3XPfQgNI)

You of all people probably already had access to The Simpsons. Futurama is apparently tied up in existing contracts so maybe that makes the jump once those run out. Otherwise, Pixar and Disney’s vault of animated films are available. I mostly forget to check Disney+. I have a whole bunch of Pixar to catch up on.

Honestly, if I didn’t like Marvel, I’d find it very hard to justify subscribing to Disney+ (even with the discounted price) because that’s where a lot of upcoming exclusive content is coming from. It’s hard to believe Disney voluntarily sold the rights to Studio Ghibli’s entire catalog. In a rare instance of lacking foresight, it missed out on more exclusive content.

This is some BIG News.

Disney and Sony ink a deal to bring Sony Pictures to Disney+
https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/disney-sony-marvel-spiderman-movie-deal-1234957207/

the short of it is, All movies starting w/ releases in 2022 will come exclusively to Disney Platforms (D+, Hulu, ABC, FX, etc etc), after the initial 18month stay at Netflix (Sony just inked a deal w/ Netflix as well for the post Theater run streaming).

But this also means Spider-Man and other older Sony Movies will soon be moving to Disney+ as well.

Soon the MCU collection on D+ will be complete, save for one lone hold out in the Incredible Hulk.

This is also a good indication for negotiations with Sony on a 2nd Spidey Trilogy (the college years?)
and may also lead to that eventual Disney buyout of Sony Pictures in the next decade or so?

That deal seems to be US only. So much like with the Warner Bros content on HBO Max, all of which is releasing as a premium £15/$20 rental here, it will get left aside.

I think I remember seeing trailers for it, in a theatre, pre-pandemic.  I guess I assumed it came out.  But, iirc, Ryan Reynolds plays an NPC in a video game world and then saves the day or something?  Unless that's a different movie that actually came out.

I mean, Disney sat on Black Widow for over a year now, and I've heard of other studios doing the same with other films even before the pandemic. Its all about timing for them to maximize their return of investment, though I'm sure it is at the expense of the actor's career since they can't as easily do the news cycle tours to promote their stuff when its stuck in release purgatory.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: nickmitch on May 24, 2021, 04:37:36 PM
Yeah, that makes sense.  It just doesn't register as a "we need to hold on to this until theatres re-open" film like Black Widow.  To me, it seems more like a "We can just put this on VOD now and start recouping the money" type film.  Maybe I underestimate Reynolds's star-power, but the movie just looked so-so.
Title: Re: Disney+
Post by: Stratos on June 02, 2021, 02:19:23 PM
If I had to guess its because the ROI on ticket sales even for an average performing film are much more than what they can make on VOD. To extrapolate from what we see in the game world, games drastically reduce in value over time so VOD is a slow burn that may trickle off to almost nothing while a theater debut gives a huge blast of profit and then the VOD is the icing on the cake. Its probably even more acute with a mediocre film because those lack the staying power a popular series has to maintain income through VOD performance.

I read somewhere that Black Widow might have been delayed because Scarlett Johansson’s contract entitles her to a percentage of the box office revenue. If the movie went straight to Disney+, she wouldn’t get her cut therefore Disney legally can’t release the movie directly to Disney+ without Johansson willingly giving up millions of dollars (which, let’s be honest, no one would ever do). I suppose Disney could have tried to renegotiate for a cut of the $29.99 Disney+ premium access price, but that would definitely be less than what a Marvel movie would normally pull in, again leaving Johansson very little reason to do this.

Lol they expired yesterday. I had started watching Jessica Jones season 3 a week ago, but determined I would not be able to watch it fast enough and stopped.

But it's good Disney will have M rated shows. According to USAtoday there are added parental controls on the app.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this.

My Disney+ subscription expires next month. I'm strongly considering the Disney+ and Hulu without ads bundle. I don't need so many streaming services so I may also cancel my recurring Netflix subscription and subscribe only when there's something I really want to watch.

Has anyone else done this or something similar? How is it working out for you?

Just a reminder to everyone, the original 3 year bundle will expire next month.
Those that signed up right away on Day 1, may have even gotten a special package from Disney with small goodies in it.

Check your email for the notice. It says renewal is I think $79.99 for a year, but on the site, I believe you can re-up for $69.99 for the year. Not sure if that changes come next month.
I plan to lock it in early, and then explore the Bundle with Hulu and maybe even ESPN.

I got that notification. I'm on the Hulu ESPN+ bundle. I was basically paying for Hulu + Live TV, and ESPN+ was basically a free add-on. I think I'm all set to go, but I'll double-check.

I think there's an Amex offer and a Rakuten cashback deal to also grab.
