Help me choose my next DS/3DS RPG
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:28:17 PM »
I'm thinking Fire Emblem, Alliance Alive, Stella Glow, Nostalgia, Mario and Luigi, 999, The World Ends With You, I don't really know. Can you all give me some ideas based on your experiences? Virtual Console and eShop digital only titles are included. Basically whatever I can play on my N3DSXL. Thanks.

Welp, Stella Glow is my next game to play. Reverse psychology paid reviews strikes again.

Monster Hunter Stories is basically the best Pokémon game on the 3DS.

If you have a new 3DS I also recommend Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. You can get the game for less than $20 if you look around and I believe GameStop has used copies for like $10 nowadays. It's not an RPG but it's the best game on 3DS and it makes great use of the new 3DS's extra horsepower.

If you want retro options, some fun virtual console RPGs are: The first two SNES Breath of Fire games, and  Pokémon Blue/Red/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal for GB/GBC virtual consoles. The GBC Lufia game is also on there by the way, though I don't know if it's any good...
If you wanna dabble in Sega Game Gear stuff, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya is a strategy RPG, and was later remade as Shining Force CD. Another SRPG for Game Gear that's on the eShop is Crystal Warriors. Think of these as if they're early GBC Fire Emblems, I guess.

Also, the next Radio Free Nintendo retroactive episode will be on Crimson Shroud, which is a 7~ish hour RPG. Might be fun if you like contributing some thoughts to the show?

999 - This is a pretty awesome game, but if you have any way to play one of the improved releases ("Zero Escape: The Nonary Games" on Steam or Vita) then go that way. Having to replay the full game to get to each key decision point can be really annoying otherwise, and introducing a better way to manage which paths you've already gone through is a huge improvement. As an alternative, play through  a couple of times to get a feel for the game and then look up the required paths to get the real ending - some of the requirements aren't obvious, but it's totally worth playing through to see all of the different endings at least once.

Outside of one bad (in my opinion) design choice where you are required to get a random drop to progress, this was one of my favorite little RPGs on the console. It's different though - closer to a real (non-video game) RPG than most of the more popular titles that usually get recommended. Definitely worth playing if you haven't already!

My next portable RPG is probably going to be either Persona Q, one of the Dragon Warrior series, or Fantasy Life (if that counts). All look great, all for different reasons.
