Ian, Broodwars! Come on in and offer your congratulations!

This guy! I don't remember a single anything he's ever said that didn't make me laugh!

I know I'm late but is anyone else really happy that Majoras Mask has finally gotten it's dues? Is that the right expression? MM was the black sheep forever and then somewhere down the line it seemed like everyone loved it.  Very happy it started off much stronger than OoT and ALBW(though I have mixed feelings about that one).

Makes you wonder, with all the Gamecube praise I see just about everywhere maybe Nintendo should just rerelease that system next gen.

Seriously though, no one bought F-Zero GX when they had the chance but now everyone begs for either it or a brand new game. I think a remake is in order so people can put their monkey where their mouth is. I feel like the game is legendary at this point and would guarantee sales. Well on 3DS anyway but I want it on Wii U.

Given Nintendo's place in consoles, re-releasing the Gamecube would result in worse sales than the Virtual Boy.
And deservedly so.

Nintendo's dominance in Japan has come to an end, the era of Playstation has arrived. Top 20 rankings, Sony =12 Nintendo = 8 the tables have turned. So much for consoles being dead, PS4 almost sold more than both handhelds combined. Good job Sony keep kicking ass and maybe Nintendo will have to straighten up. Poor Xbox it's almost as if the thing doesn't even exist over there. Much like the Wii U here.

Well, let's see how this shakes out before we jump to conclusions here. Japan's still the dominion of handhelds, and I see a lot of "NEW"s in that list (including several from major franchises) so I'm going to wait to see how this turns out long-term before declaring that Sony's finally turning things around in Japan.

Agreed. Lots of high profile new releases but none of them reached 6 digit sales. It's a good bump for the week but winning the console battle doesn't mean much in Japan.

Alright give it a few months or the end of the year it won't make any difference. All the evidence points to a world wide resurgence of Playstation with the PS4, and Japan is Sony's homeland too.

Vita is doing better than Wii U. Is that your benchmark for "proof" consoles are dead in Japan, Wii U is beaten out by two handhelds? What if PS4 does turn things around,  which it looks to be doing, still going to pretend like consoles are not dead?

For the sake of the Japanese gaming industry that abandoned the console market years ago, I hope the PS4 DOES turn things around in Japan. I WANT to see a revitalized Japanese development scene after that market completely collapsed last generation. I've just seen this little dance play out several times in the past few years: temporary bump, followed by severe slide as the same old 2-3 handheld franchises dominate the charts. And meanwhile, another Japanese developer jumps ship to join the mobile scene.

The PS4 is dominating worldwide. There's no disputing that. However, for the PS4 to really turn things around in Japan, it would have to explode in a way we haven't seen in Japan since the PS2 days because that is the only way all these Japanese developers will come back. I just don't see that happening. The sales have been too soft.

but that is not new, nor is it Japan, hand helds have out sold consoles for a long time now.

Game Boy outsold SNES, N64 and Game Cube COMBINED, as did GBA and DS EACH. That is not a new phenomenon they are different markets filling different needs that is not proof that console gamers have switched to hand helds it just means that the last generation was lack luster all around, nothing more.

I haven't even thought of this possibility.  It would actually be really great if the PS4 could revitalize consoles in Japan.

It makes me think of an odd possibility.  What if consoles "dying" in Japan last gen was not because Japan no longer likes consoles but simply because there was no console that fit what they wanted?  The Xbox 360 is Western so it was a no go in Japan anyway.  The Wii was very non-traditional.  The PS3 is Sony's console misstep and was too expensive.  From the Famicom through to the PS2 there was always a no-brainer console for Japan to embrace until last gen.  So what if they like consoles fine but just didn't like last gen's consoles and thus a large amount of traditional console customers went to the handhelds because that was closer to what they wanted than the actual consoles were?  What if now that Japan has a console that fits their tastes again with the PS4 consoles are slowly making a comeback?

I have kind of been thinking the same thing as Ian because it just seems like last gen was lousy and hey what a surprise PS2 was still selling up till 2013, so maybe that shows there was a hunger for consoles but just not what was being offered. Plus PSP was pretty much the real successor to PS2 in many respects just like DS and now 3DS are better alternatives in many respects to their console counterparts. Sure it is a waiting game but right now the signs are pointing to a revival of consoles not a bleak future as has been predicted.

The PS4 is selling the way it is now because it finally has games the Japanese are interested in release in the last few months.  The PS3 still sold over 10 million systems in Japan so it's not like the Japanese home console market is completely non existent.  Last year the system was selling worse then the Wii U after it's launch because it had nothing to make those PS3 owner upgrade, until these last few months which have seen a steady supply of every week include big titles like Dragon Quest Heroes.

Basically, if you're a Japanese Playstation fan who's had any interest in the system, these last several months have been the perfect time to finally buy one.  Similar to how the Wii U actually got a huge boast during holiday 2013 when Nintendo bundled NSMB U with the system around the time of Mario 3D Worlds launch, which caused all the remaining Mario fans that didn't buy the system at launch to go get it.  This is why Mario Kart 8 didn't do much to boast sales when it came out in Japan, or Mario Party 10 hasn't either since all the Mario fans either bought the Wii U at launch or waited until the NSMB bundles around 3D Worlds launch.

What's happening right now with the PS4 is very similar where the Playstation fans who didn't buy it at launch are now finally making the plunge but that will change since after Bloodborne this week, the PS4's lineup slows down until Meta Gear in September.  The sales will get back into the 10k range this Summer and won't rise again until Metal Gear Solid V's release.  Of course even that might not boast sales very much since the people interested in the upcoming major PS4 titles in Japan could easily all be getting one right now since it's the right time, leaving not as many to jump in when those games hit.

I don't hate Nintendo I am just happy Playstation is doing well because as long as Wii U continues to SUCK at least there is a real game console out there to support. I would LOVE for Nintendo to not suck but hey they don't seem to care so whatever.

Can't we like Nintendo but hate the Wii U?  Did those that rejected the Virtual Boy hate Nintendo?  Did those that rejected the 32X hate Sega?  No, you can like a company overall but dislike some of their products.

The  8) means I'm not being overly serious with the comment. Don't worry about it. If you want to respond to something, respond to Adrock's comment in Talkback about the 3DS being the same things you reject in the Wii U. That is a more interesting subject. Of course, you only want to respond to a slight jab because you can defend your viewpoint a bit better against my sarcastic comment.
