Wii to Wii U System Transfer Process Detailed
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:13:04 PM »

Your Mii characters and Wii Shop Points will not be left stranded on a desert console.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32416

The Wii U system transfer process has been revealed.

Along with your WiiWare and Virtual Console games, Wii Shop Points/activity, Mii characters, save data, and add-on content will also take the journey with you to the next-generation of video game hardware.

Here are the steps on how the transfer process will work:

1. Put any SD Card into the Wii U to start transfer.

2. Take SD card out of the Wii U and place into the Wii.

3. Download the Wii Shop Channel Application for system transfer.

4. After Wii data is copied to the SD Card, insert it into the Wii U.

5. Wii data will then be copied to the Wii U system memory.

The system transfer will be available worldwide at launch. Starting with North America on November 18, Europe, Australia and New Zealand on November 30 and Japan on December 8.

I'm a staff writer here at good ol' Nintendo World Report, but I also have a Nintendo website at www.nintendogamerthoughts.com

Predicament that I'm hoping someone can clarify that knows about this process in more detail:

My original White Wii had a lot of VC downloads, couple of WiiWare games and some RB DLC. The disk drive started to wear out and I gave it to my nephew before it died because I had already gotten a 2nd, Black, Wii as a gift.

The disk drive finally wore out but they kept the system (his dad loves playing the VC games) so I'm sure I can borrow it in order to transfer my old stuff to my new Wii U BUT..

Will I also be able to add the (fewer) VC titles I have on the 2nd (Black) Wii to my Wii U as well or is it capped somehow? Also, would DLC even work or is it strictly VC/WW purchases? I've just assumed that game saves would copy over so I assumed DLC would work the same, but I don't know if there's different programming in there or whatever (not a tech-head) so can anyone let me know?

Even though Nintendo confirmed this months ago?

xc, I assume it will be like the DS-3DS process and have it be erased from your Wii once you transfer it to your Wii U.

Even though Nintendo confirmed this months ago?

I remember reading Andrew's article on 9/13, the day of that big Nintendo Direct, and the article stated that the transfer process would be available at launch :
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31664

However, Andy's article just 10 hours later stated that they spoke to Nintendo, and Nintendo had not confirmed that the transfer process would be there at launch.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31715

So, I just  ran with that last bit of news since Andy's article came, well, last..  I don't think a word has been spoken about the transfer process since that day...

Firstly, DLC does transfer in this process, so your songs should make it over with no problem. Second, I'm almost positive you could transfer content from multiple DSis to one 3DS, so I think it's likely you'll be able to transfer the content from both Wiis to your new Wii U.

But my VC and Wii ware are on an SD card.... now WTF?

Also, I plan to keep my Wii, so why would I want to cripple it? Can I not have both?

This is one thing that Apple trumped the crap out of everybody on with the iTunes Music Store. Attach the content to the user then let the user authenticate their devices. It's not at all worthwhile to buy eShop titles vs. retail because I can't load it on the multiple 3DS's I have in my house. Opportunity *missed*, Nintendo!

It should go away... I think.

When you do DSi to 3DS transfer your game disappear from old DSi, right?

Good news, will transfer my Wii stuff to Wii U to play with slightly better image quality (also my Wii component cable is acting up and randomly screws up the picture you have to touch it or move it around to make it normal).

This is my only main concern. I kept all the system apps on the Wii's main memory. All my VC, WiiWare, and demos were on the SD card. I wonder if I will be able to just use that SD card to do the system transfer and it takes all the stuff that's already on there with it over to the WiiU?

I may actually do a system transfer if only to conserve space under my TV. The only downside is that I won't be able to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl with Wavebird controllers anymore. I don't really play it that often so I suppose this isn't really a problem. I'm going to need an SD card.

The Sad part is the last 2 years been playing more GameCube games then Wii Games on my system so, I'm not gaining super much when I transfer.

Thank you, but I have one more question..

Since it seems that the data disappears from the old Wii to the Wii U, I may not bother since I'd be taking away the stuff the other guy mostly plays.. UNLESS.. Since he'll still be using the old Wii, can't he just re-download everything from the Wii Shop channel at no cost??

Forgive my ignorance since I never upgraded to the 3DS and aren't familiar with the transfer process.

No, you can't redownload because it removes your licenses from that system.

Lame, but I figured as much and just wanted confirmation. Maybe I'll still do the transfer and just give him a ****-load of wii points for xmas. It's just easier than re-buying all my old stuff, especially with saves and whatnot..
