I actually think replaying the game, if you enjoyed it the first time, is an amazing choice. Once you know the plot, the characters, the outcome.. it changes how you see many of the conversations, you see lots of foreshadowing and it makes the game even more brilliant to me.

TalkBack / Re: The Disappointing Scarcity of Amiibo
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:47:51 AM »
It seems like another case of Nintendo misreading the response to their product. Really the scheduling for Amiibos is odd though. Waves come basically every three weeks, leaving a very short window for the last wave to sell before moving on. If they were offering three month windows, with more stock, maybe it'd make more sense? Now that they've seen the success of their product, I hope they'll be inclined to produce more. Even if they just let you order directly through Nintendo themselves online, it'd be a start and keep retail space clear for the next batch.

I didn't expect blind grabs, but I'm still glad to have it confirmed. Figures look pretty high quality from reports and photos. Looking forward to buying a bunch of them, even if they see little use in-game.

No way I'm going to work hard enough to get a sub-3 minute time on this new challenge. Congrats on the fella with the 2:55 time, it's freaking impressive.

I'm still bitter about the 3DS XL announcement two weeks after E3, since I just bought a Midnight Purple 3DS. Maybe there will be a new 3DS revision at E3, maybe it'll come two weeks later, but it's probably coming at some point.

Too late for me to join the tournament, next time though! I did finish 6th out of 176 in the GAF tournament, so I'm feeling pretty good about my golfing. :P

TalkBack / Re: Season Pass, DLC Coming to Mario Golf: World Tour
« on: April 22, 2014, 03:50:42 PM »
Just because it's Day 1 DLC doesn't mean it 'should be included'.

Given that the retail game is giving you more courses / holes than previous entries into the console series, they're not cutting the expected content at all. This is another smart move because it allows them to cut the MSRP and get the game into more people's hands.

I'm all for this sort of DLC, which is upfront about what's being offered, not cutting content and looks to be very solid. Nintendo has been pretty good about DLC thus far in my book. Fire Emblem, NSMBU/2 and now Golf, all offer as much content as has been included in previous series entries and now you can buy more, roughly doubling each game's content, for a reasonable price.

I think the mistake here (even if it is a golf term) is calling it a 'Season Pass' which stirs up all sorts of bad feeling as an industry term. I also have some concerns with how DLC could divide a userbase that's very heavy in online play, as this game will be (and as Mario Kart and Smash Bros will be too). But overall, I'm glad they're offering this.

I'd love the die-cast playing pieces.. but.. not for the price these will retail for. Monopoly being pretty terrible doesn't help.

TalkBack / Re: Steel Diver: Sub Wars Update Available Now
« on: March 19, 2014, 11:58:42 PM »
Still received three, or so errors tonight (after matches) while playing for an hour. I noticed lobbies don't always fill up now and you end up 4v3 with a CPU on one team. Seems like it's happening more now thanks to the 1 minute lobby limit, although maybe it's just less people online as well.

I still haven't bought the premium game, but I am considering it. This game is a lot of fun, but there are plenty of odd decisions holding it back. Lack of online friend matchups, random map selection (ie; ending up in fish bowl multiple times in a row, argh..), the disconnects. The game very much is pay to win as well. Some of the premium subs are really monsters compared to the two free ones, even with decent shipmates.

A shame you've had connection issues online. I've yet to drop a game through about 30 of them. It is tough for me to keep a winning streak going though, as the errors usually occur after the match finishes and it begins looking for a new lobby.

I won't mind helping you with some of the rarer event Pokemon, if you want them in your Dex. Jirachi, Mew, Manaphy, etc. I can trade you them to fill the Dex, then you trade them back. Let me know if you're still hunting for these.

You should give the multiplayer more time and update your impressions. It's where the real meat of the game resides and even without the 'premium' version, it offers plenty of content. You have plenty of customizations for your two free submarines, different crew members that adjust stats, recolouring, different patterns to apply. And there are a variety of maps in multiplayer as well.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Do you regret buying a Wii U?
« on: January 30, 2014, 04:42:40 PM »
No regrets, other than the possible savings I could have had by waiting. I think it's a fine console for gamers, especially Nintendo fans. I've pumped in almost 500 hours of Monster Hunter, played plenty of Mario, Nintendo Land, Pikmin (now picking up co-op too) and even indie stuff like Spin the Bottle.  I've had a few disappointing titles (W101 and Sonic:LW just didn't appeal to me in the end. I know, burn me now.), but overall I'm happy with what's on the system right now.

Future prospects look good this year too, although I'm not entirely happy with how they've spaced the schedule. The wait between DKC:TF and Mario Kart 8 is such a void and Nintendo hasn't been great at filling those gaps in the past using Virtual Console, or eShop releases as they should be. I would guess E3 / Nintendo Directs will have at least a handful of new Wii U games being announced, on top of what we know about, looks fine for me this year. I'm not sure anything will really push the console though. Mario Kart and Smash will see slight bumps, but I'm not confident that Nintendo can maintain momentum with the titles, even though Iwata has stated it will be their goal.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Cuts Wii U Sales Forecast
« on: January 17, 2014, 11:33:07 AM »

Some new quotes from CVG / Bloomberg from the press conference this morning as well.

Quote
"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a sceptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.

"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."

2014 is going to be an interesting year for Nintendo. I'm still of mind their next system will be portable, with the option to output to the television (through HDMI, streaming, or whatever means they come up with). Consolidating the two pieces of hardware into one makes allot of sense, from cutting down on R&D cost, not splitting the userbase that may only purchase one, or the other, and all your development resources being focused on the one device.

What's really interesting though is Iwata's future. If he's replaced, then by whom? If it's from inside the company, change probably comes more slowly. If it's from outside the company, someone with more mobile ambition, perhaps we see things shift more quickly. eShop / VC releases on Android and their own dedicated system, with the few so called 'premium' games being exclusive to their own hardware. I could see something like that.

I'm sure there'll be a Nintendo Direct coming soon, but I wouldn't count on it for long term answers. Never a dull moment in this industry..

TalkBack / Re: Top 10 Wii U Games: Year One
« on: December 04, 2013, 06:56:39 PM »
1. Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate
2. Super Mario 3D World
3. Pikmin 3
4. New Super Mario Bros. U / Super Luigi U
5. Nintendo Land
6. ZombiU
7. Nano Assault Neo
8. Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party
-snip-
9. The Wonderful 101
10. Sonic Lost World

I really feel like most people, especially those that don't own a Wii U, or just recently bought it, underrate just how good Nintendo Land can be. Not just for the 'party games', but the single player offerings are stellar too.

I added the snip under 8 because I wouldn't really put W101, or Sonic on my recommended list for the Wii U's first year, but I just didn't have much else to add. Notably other titles I considered, Toki Tori 2, which didn't click with me too well and Dungeons & Dragons, which was fine for what it was.

Obviously the odd choice on the list is Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party. But it really is quite an entertaining title for the price. That is, if you have people that will actually want to play it, since the games are sometimes weird, odd, hilarious and anything, but what you would expect from a video game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTC6h2IG1CA&t=7m45s

Overall, I enjoyed the Wii U plenty for the first year. I think for a gamer, it had plenty to offer, even with the early drought. But for joe-public and more casual fans of games, it still doesn't have 'that' game to bring them in.

It's a fine addition, although it's sad that something that should be a standard feature has to be celebrated when it happens on Nintendo platforms.

And we're still a long ways off from what I really want, which is cross platform purchasing and playing of Virtual Console games. Buying something like Legend of Zelda twice just to play it on my 3DS and Wii U doesn't make much sense to me at this point.

Thanks for the post. I didn't know we weren't supposed to do 2 different Club Nintendo Accounts and I was considering opening a second one (because I've already hit platinum so I figured if I can hit platinum again it would be cool to get 2 different prizes). Now that I know I won't start up a second one.

You can link two accounts by making them 'family accounts', as we have. For the rare occasion we buy two copies of the same game (Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart), we're able to register all the codes that way.

TalkBack / Re: Pokémon X and Y Online Features Overview
« on: October 25, 2013, 04:13:12 PM »
O-Powers are the biggest online component for me. Notably Hatching Power (the final power you receive), Bargain Power and Prize Money power. You can use them on yourself, or give them to friends. It costs more to give them to yourself, so it's worth it if you can receive them from someone else.

It should also be noted you can cut down the orb regeneration time by accumulating 3DS steps every day. At 4x (the max), it's a new orb every fifteen seconds, or so I believe.

Canada: For only one more day, you can pickup a 3DS XL, during WalMart's anniversary sale, for $149.99. Price match at Futureshop / Best Buy for another few bucks off. This is the best price you'll find for the system, even beating out bonus days at Shoppers.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Quick Pokemon question
« on: September 16, 2013, 12:24:20 PM »

Yellow changes quite a few things, notably the addition of Pikachu as a starter Pokemon, but giving you the ability to receive the other Kanto starters later on. There are some story changes, actually featuring Jessie and James. Some changes to the exclusive Pokemon are made, but you're still missing around 10 from the total.

The GBA remakes, Fire Red / Leaf Green are well done and give you a slightly more polished version of the originals, with quite a bit more content. Gold / Silver (and their remakes) do feature Kanto region, but it is a trimmed down region and you're not 'experiencing' Red / Blue by playing through it.

But keep in mind; Pokemon has come a long way. If you're going back to play some of the original releases, expect very slow and chunky interface. As big as a Pokemon fan as I am, I wouldn't touch any of the Game Boy releases on Virtual Console these days.

If you're trying to get into the games, Black / White is a great entry point. Battles and menus move much faster, even if you just compare it to the previous generation. Maybe start from there and if you're hooked, look further back into the history of the franchise.

The 3rd version is always missing Pokemon that first 2 versions have. It's a complete rip off that guys like me just eat up. 3rd version is only best for glitch fixes and updates in battle.

3rd versions do scramble the missing Pokemon (usually around a dozen), but 3rd versions usually expand on the total Pokemon available. Take Platinum and BW2 for instance, where older generations are more easily obtainable.

But it's not as if exclusive Pokemon should deter people these days given the ability to trade online. 3rd versions like Emerald, Platinum and BW2 DO offer plenty of reasons to purchase it. Usually it's the expansion like Battle Tower, Join Avenue, Move Tutors, additional items being added, etc. In a less competitive sense, there are major story overhauls as well, additional animations, or sprites. Plenty of reasons why fans of the series should pick up a third release.

« on: September 14, 2013, 03:36:16 PM »
Someone probably brought this up to you guys, but using a different account on the Wii U does give you your own Pikmin 3 save. Same for The Cave, and many other games. But usually, if you see a save menu with several save slots, then it looks like they're shared between every account.

Are you sure? Because on other Wii U games I've played, it's used the same save file for both accounts. Did they finally fix that?

I'm sure this is the case, as it's the way my wife and I both played our own single player games in Pikmin 3.

Certain games (NSMBU) that use multiple save slots are shared between all accounts, while other games that offer a single save slot (ZombiU, Pikmin) have save unique to the user. It varies from game to game, but all the games I've played with a single save slot have allowed me to start fresh on another user account.
