This is a rare instance of wanting to buy a game at full-price, day one, no questions asked. Aaron nails it on the head: "... the company again shows just what it is that makes Nintendo games special."

My wife is going to be none too happy. She's played the Wii game for over a year, nearly every single day, and wanted a 3DS on the prospect of a new AC. In fact, she put it on our registry (just got married) and an old high school friend bought her the purple one! Looks like she'll be playing her used copy of Wild World on her 3DS for some time now.... yes, she's aware she has a problem.

I love that they're bringing this over to the States. (And Canada, too.) I heard the name "Tokyo Crash Mobs" and wondered what the heck new game this was, but then I saw that it was the odd people-throwing PuzzLoop game and rejoiced. Okay, "rejoiced" is too strong.....    or is it???

I played the WiiWare demo but never got around to buying it. Frankly I'm confused as to how I haven't played this yet, as I loved the demo...  this feels like the right version for me, but I'm hoping the smallish 3DS screen (no XL for me yet) doesn't make it difficult to see what's going on, since all the characters and whatnot are pretty small.

That Japanese video is worth watching if only to hear Iwata say "In-ter-net." What an adorable man he is. Also: Can't wait to use those red velvet curtains to show-off a picture found online. Totally 100% serious.

I'm thinking this game is going to be about 1000% better than the initial reaction at E3 would lead people to believe. Okay, maybe not a thousand. But way better. Maybe even "waaay" better. I excite.

TalkBack / Re: Wii Virtual Console Titles Not Playable on GamePad
« on: September 14, 2012, 03:21:37 PM »
I don't know if "lazy" is the word I'd use. Maybe overwhelmed? Profit-focused? Because as some have said against the tide of ragers, it doesn't behoove Nintendo the Company to allow us to play old games on the new system. I thought VC would be playable on the GamePad too, and I'm bummed out. BUT after thinking about it for a minute, the decision makes some sense. The GamePad isn't magic -- games developed years before they even made the thing won't just magically appear on a separate video-streaming screen without some kind of coding in place. So it's crappy, sure. But I don't think Nintendo is being lazy in their lack of effort....    they're kind of busy, probably, building a new system and developing new games and creating online infrastructure and working on 4DS and Super Wii U prototypes, etc., etc. I hope this is wrong info and we get what we want. Buuuttt it's not as simple as many claim. Paint a big A for Apologist on my lapel if ya like.

I agree with Scott that NintendoLand, to those folks who bought a "Wii Sports" machine and nothing else, is unappealing or at least full of relatively unknown reference points. Why would Mrs. Thompson care about Metroid? But what if she did? What if she bought this Wii U thing for some reason (it's a TV remote! And I could videochat with my son on it!) and then she plays this weird "NintendoLand" game and, lo and behold, gets sucked into Metroid Blast. And then a message comes up on the Wii U GamePad: 'Like this? Try downloading "Super Metroid" for SNES.' So mom does. And loves it. (Because I don't care who you are, Super Metroid is brilliant.) And suddenly we've taken a non-gamer into someone who might be interested in a new Metroid game that comes out in Fall 2013 and retails for $59.99.

Now, this is quite unlikely. But NLand could certainly be the ultimate bridge title if it works, introducing all of these characters and franchises to people who've never paid them much attention.

The optical illusion would make my eyes sweat after looking at that all the time....   The protection/skin is a good recommendation, but I'm hoping they have less Escher-like designs from which to choose. Eep.

Is Time Travelers still a thing? I thought I remember this coming out for 3DS in Japan.... though maybe it'll never come over, since I believe it's a sound novel with mucho translation needed. Really intrigued by Fantasy Life, though. And still hoping Guilt 01 comes out in the west. Level-5 is so full of goodness these days.

This game needs to come out in North America.

TalkBack / Re: Fluidity: Spin Cycle Revealed for eShop
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:51:41 AM »
I imagine the "spin cycle" subtitle refers to using the 3DS gyro to maneuver the water around, a la WarioWare: Twisted? Might not make use of the 3D screen, then, but the mechanics from the WiiWare game would work quite nicely on the 3DS, methinks. Best news of the press release.

Neal, this makes too much sense to be feasible. But I hope to heckfire you're right. They need to pump this baby out in time to have other big HD game releases available on WiiU day-and-date. Otherwise, 90% of players will buy CoD and Assassin's Creed on PS360, WiiU versions will sell poorly, 3rd parties will think platform isn't viable for their games, and the dreaded cycle will continue.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo, The App Poacher
« on: August 09, 2012, 12:30:58 PM »
Fascinating discussion.

For what it's worth, one of the higher-ups at Level-5 called Army of Darkness: Defense (iOS) one of his top titles of last year. And it's the few iOS games I still play.

Andy's comment makes sense, that Nintendo should be plucking the cream from the App Store and getting their games on the eShop, but too many of the games were built with the platform in mind (like Gui says), and the price comparison would immediately look bad (Cut the Rope seems overpriced at 5 bucks even if that's a fair ask for a great game). I think Nintendo knows it has to strike out on its own and get exclusive games since few would pay 5 or 10 bucks when they know they could spend 99 cents elsewhere.

Wish there was a better compromise, since I much prefer playing games on 3DS to my iTouch, and I know there's some gems on the App Store that I willfully ignore because of the platform and my own playing habits. This discussion (the larger, cultural one) will be going on for some time, I bet.

Hmm. Iwata came from HAL. HAL made Kirby. Iwata now President of NCL. Kirby receives star treatment beyond even the "big 3" of Mario/Zelda/Metroid.... very very interesting.
The big question is: Will Kirby's Dream Course (SNES) be an unlockable? If so, I'm sold.

TalkBack / Re: The Great Pre-Wii U Backlog Saga
« on: July 21, 2012, 05:00:26 PM »
It feels good to know I'm not alone in this.
And without even realizing this feature existed, I finally started yesterday one of the many untouched games that have piled up around here: Enslaved. It's pretty good so far...  not the hugest fan of Unreal Engine post-apocalyptic adventure stuff, but hot damn that opening airplane sequence is impressive. I even wrote into RFN awhile back and they were so kind as to help me with my little problem. Among the more blatant leftovers:

(360) Banjo & Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Fallout 3, Eternal Sonata
(Wii)  Resident Evil 4, Zack & Wiki, Fragile Dreams
(DS)  Final Fantasy IV, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Hotel Dusk

And those are just the unplayed ones. I hardly count the "unfinished" games, as long as I spent enough time with them to feel like I got my money's worth. The 'Log will never be empty, but the advice to "not buy new games" is sound and healthy. I'm treating downloadable games as little snacks I can still buy and indulge in, as long as I don't buy new retail games. Doesn't make much sense, I realize, but a man needs his vices.

Hmmm... maybe "launch" means "launch window"? Personally I'd much prefer getting the system itself out earlier, say in September, and then have NSMBU come out in November for a pre-holiday jolt. But that probably won't happen.

Ooh I've been waiting on this for some time...   hot damn I'm loving these game-for-coins offerings. So far I've nabbed Fluidity, Majora's Mask, Mario's Picross, Radar Mission, Snowpack Park, and Maboshi's Arcade, and have really enjoyed [most of] them. A few certified classics, a few bits of history and a multiplayer puzzle gem, that would have cost me around 45 bones, all for basically nil? Good stuff.

I agree that Brain Training-type games have gone the way of iOS...  so I'm curious how Nintendo makes this relevant and worthwhile. Still, the charm of the original Brain Age games far out weight that of other similar types of games I've seen elsewhere, so I'll willing to check it out. Perhaps it gets a Weekend Download sale??

I think I'd get this for the amazing cover art alone. But reading the impressions makes me fear it will never get localized...    a text-heavy table-top game? A game by a Japanese comedy troupe? I hope they bring it over, but I'm not expecting it.

Really happy to read this. Stephen Totilo from Kotaku has been pretty positive, but most others in the press seem to have already turned a blind eye. Seems a bit too soon to cast dispersions. Here's something I wrote about the reaction and Wii U's potential: http://killscreendaily.com/articles/essays/nintendos-power/

I agree that this headline is pretty deceptive. BUT I hope this is an actual game, since it sounds pretty rad. There are still so many ideas to be mined for dual-screen games, as there are for motion-control. Just scratching the surface.

One of my favorite games this generation. Though the WiiWare/Collection version is vastly superior to the 3DS one...   the framerate is pretty rough. All the other games in SAGA are ported well, though.
