TalkBack / Re: Ivy the Kiwi? Interview with Yuji Naka

I, for one, would love to see more "Let's...." games.  I just picked up Let's Tap, and have only played the Runner and Rhythm modes, but both are great fun (and especially excellent with a lady -- good for building synchronicity and slight pangs of competitiveness).  I would download Let's Catch if it were priced a bit lower: $10 seems steep, but I've heard about interesting design choices that intrigue me, perhaps making it worthwhile.

I'm playing Yoshi's Island right now, and though I know Story has almost zero to do with that, I'd be interested in playing it in advance of Epic Yarn (and just to see what all the hate was about).  I remember being completely psyched when I first saw the screenshots way back when.  And then?  I let the critics steer me away.
Would someone recommend downloading the VC version over finding an actual cart?  'Cause I'd love to add the real thing to my N64 collection, but I've heard the Wii cleans up the graphics a tad.... probably a moot point.

Wii Party is going to do huge business in the States.  I think it actually looks quite fun, but I have a thing for simple, quirky, inventive games that don't take 50 hours to slog through.  This is one of those titles that a mom or dad strolling through the aisles looking for a game will snatch up instantly.  Can't wait to see it outsell some AAA-title on the HD consoles and hear everyone pant and moan.

Whoa.  That actually looks pretty cool.  I didn't listen to the music, (in a mute-necessary situation), but with some driving tunes that could be a fun, intense puzzler.  (And an aside: Bring back Tetrisphere!)
And that TV show was ree-diculous.

I think the best part of this edition would be the music CD, honestly.  I've still got my SNES cart, and I might even prefer the NES graphics and sound to the All-Stars version anyway.  Now, if there was some crazy option to switch between NES/SNES/Wii audio-visuals, that's another story.  But that ain't happening.  Still hope it comes stateside, if only to gaze at it in the aisle.

I found you guys late in your life-span (my first RFN was "Rondo of Games") but I must add to the bevy of kudos: Y'all do great work.  And I hope to contribute more around here.  Until then...
P.S.  Just listened to Epi204 -- somehow I skipped it a few weeks ago -- and I concur that Demon's Crest is phenomenal.  Played it with a buddy as a rental way back when, after beating Super Metroid, and the game held up well in SM's mighty wake.  A very cool, unique platformer worth seeking out.
Will be listening to 208 this week as I walk to and fro the train station.  Hoping for some Enjoy Your Massage tips & tricks, so I'll cross my fingers.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: NWR's Influence

Retro Game Challenge is certainly one that I might have passed over had I not heard it discussed here....
And Wario Land: Shake It! is next on that list.  I couldn't believe it when multiple people on RFN said it was their favorite Wii platformer. And I still have a 4:3 TV, so the lack of widescreen is not an issue.  Might have to get it in preparation for Kirby's Epic Yarn to see just how GoodFeel does their thing....

I'm really interested in reading that article "Why I Quit Nintendo."  It's a shame the man who was of singular importance to Nintendo's rise left in such an unfortunate way.  Wish he could've seen the juggernaut of Wii and DS...

TalkBack / Re: 3DS Destined for 2011 Release?
« on: August 19, 2010, 02:48:43 PM »
Even though the DS launched amid many great games, we should remember it wasn't perceived to be the juggernaut it would eventually become.  It was still an unknown quantity.  If nobody showed up to buy it, Nintendo still had those other big games to boost them up.  But the 3DS has way more enthusiasm behind it already.  Which lends some credence to Neal's theory.

Do I want the 3DS in November? OH YEAH.  Will we get it?  I'm still cautiously optimistic, but a Feb 2011 release seems more likely.

@Kytim89:  Snatcher!
I've wanted to play that since I first saw images of the Japanese version way back in the early 90s.  And I think I'd actually prefer the TG-16 version, since didn't that have the original, uncensored graphics and storyline, whereas the Sega-CD game left some of that out for the American version?  Could be wrong.  Either way, I'd love to revisit an early Kojima experience... for the first time.

Count me among the many who thought Sony's handheld was going to blast Nintendo's right out of their Blue Ocean and into an early grave.  Oops.  Chault up the DS domination as just one more example of high-tech losing to right-tech.  (As in, the right technology [design, efficiency, playability, etc.].  It sounded better in my head.)

This makes me happy.  I also recently bought a Virtual Boy and have been re-experiencing it, with much joy (and little to no neck-pain).  I'd originally found one super-cheap back in 1996 when they were on clearance....  and I returned it.  Woe to my former self!  Since my recent gaming resurgence, I've been kicking myself for giving up on what is now so clearly a unique, if flawed, piece of hardware and Nintendo history.  Still wish I had my shiny out-of-the-box version from 15 years ago.  But my eBay'ed copy will have to do.

My library thus far: Red Alarm, Mario Clash, Mario Tennis, Galactic Pinball (with Wario Land on the way).  Other recommendations?  And I, too, would love to hear a RFN episode on the mighty VB.  I heard James on a recent one speak of his Virtual Boy love.  Make it happen, Mr. Jones!

« on: July 20, 2010, 10:01:20 AM »
@insanolord:  That's my magic formula.  I'm pretty tight on money nowadays, so I look for deals where I can hope to get an hour of playtime for each dollar spent.  Pretty ambitious, yes, but I'm fairly close most of the time.  A few examples:
-BIT.TRIP Runner: 800 points    8 hr. 5 min.
-Wave Race: Blue Storm (GC)  $0.50 [used]    1 hr. 30 min
-Metroid Prime Trilogy $33.33 [Buy 2 get 1 free]  39 hours 55 min
-Wii Music  $33.33 [Buy 2 get 1 free]  33 hours
-WarioWare Smooth Moves $35   32 hours
-Kirby Adventures: 500 points  4 hr. 30 min.

Might just have to check out MadWorld then.  But I think I need No More Heroes first, if we're talking about stylish violence on Wii.

TYP speaks the truth.  Over 200 bones will force me to think about what should be an instantaneous purchase.  Nintendo doesn't want people to think about buying the 3DS.  They want them to buy it, boom, no questions.  That's the genius of the Wii's single SKU - no options, no indecision.

I was having this conversation with someone else, and they said how the DSiXL is 189.99, so the 3DS will have to come in way over that.  But the DS tech is 6 years old! Sure the screens are NASA quality.  But the main guts are still from 2004. My hope is that they drop prices across the DS line and slip in their shiny new toy at 199.99.  But the way people are talking, it sounds like 250 is the expected selling point.  That's console range.  I'm as psyched as anyone to see this 3D magic show, but I can't afford a quarter-grand.  And now, I cross my fingers....

Great review.  But I had one question.  You mention early on that the Wii sequel delivers a fantastic experience "despite losing some of the unique character of the N64 original."  Unless I missed it, I never saw you specify what exactly you meant by this.  Is it the fairly generic humanoid models?  Or some intangible "feeling" somehow absent?  Having never played the N64 game, but wanting to, I'm curious about this unique character found in the original, and whether or not it's worth downloading on VC to experience it (or whether the Wii version's control and overall grandeur trounces it enough to make the download unnecessary).
Man I hope this sells more than 5 copies.
