Title: Episode 585: Crocs and Ponchos
Post by: NWR_Lindy on August 19, 2018, 12:07:00 PM

The hottest style trend of 2018 is coming at you straight outta the woods.

Guillaume returns to our happy family, sporting the first pieces of his newest fashion line, "La Forêt Nue". In celebration, we let James kick off New Business with WarioWare Gold. He likes the game a lot, but can't shake the feeling that having seen most of these games before is taking something away from the wide-eyed glee he anticipated. He also has impressions of the surprisingly-lengthy demo for Valkyria Chronicles 4. He played it at E3, but now he can talk about how the Switch version of this Super-Kawaii World War II holds up in the heat of battle. Jon promised you an update on Dead Cells, and here it is. Where are all these good exploration-heavy platformers coming from? Gui, back from vacation, has a lot of games to go through. Max and the Curse of Brotherhood underwhelmed, which leads him to make a James-like declaratory statement. Kirby: Star Allies remains adorable to anyone not named Jon Lindemann. Lastly, he has thoughts on the dark goings-on at MidBoss, developers of 2064 Read Only Memories...JUST IN TIME FOR THE SWITCH VERSION!

After the break we tackle two emails: how would we handle an IGN-style plagiarism scandal, and what piece of gaming paraphernalia do we most regret losing? You can send us your Elegy for an e-Reader by sending us an email.

the skateboard example that James brings up is actually in Mega Microgame$. the difference was that the second skateboard game that's in the wario section was a boss stage in the original Warioware.

2064: Read only memories looks like Snatcher but made by Furries millennials. I'm not suuuuper into point and click adventures, but if I saw it on sale, I'd give it a whirl. Especially given the story Gui is giving. like, yyyyyyyyyyikes. :C

I'm still behind on episodes, but I decided to listen in because you guys scooped up my email, so I felt like I should skip ahead in the continuity to give a listen. I'm LOVING that Gui is playing devil's advocate here. The thing that's a bit hard about the linking to the original articles is that some of those are Resetera and Reddit threads. and... y'know, Wikipedia, which can be vandalized.

The most precious video game thing I've ever lost is that I once had a copy of Clayfighter Sculptor's Cut. Then it got stolen by one of my asshole childhood friends. :x

I really don't think Jon is doing a good job of explaining Dead Cells... It's pretty close to non-stop combat, very little dedicated exploration and backtracking is reduced to seconds because the teleporters are pretty much at every branching point and dead end of the map. You usually don't spend more than a few seconds going through areas you've already slaughtered your way through.

Honestly I don't think it even has much to do with Metroid at all. You do unlock powers that let you reach new areas but it's not like A Robot Named Fight where you go back through the map to where you need to use them, those powers are mostly for your following runs and enable you to reach alternate stages or access new secret rooms. You keep going forward, on your next run that forward just includes branching paths where you can use those new powers.

Good show.

Really appreciate talking about the shitty things about the developer of Read Only Memories and the plagiarism question. It's tough stuff, but I really think such things need to be kicked around in discussion more.

While Metacritic has a policy not to change review scores they do remove plagiarized reviews.

I'm sure they do. I'm less sure they replace them with new reviews. But maybe they do.

Glad to be of service, person who I cannot be sure is Adrock!

So who's filling in for Jon next week?

Now that Elma has been announced for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the next logical step is to add Steve Hewitt as a guest blade.

I unsubscribed a few years ago since I didn't really play games anymore.

I bought a Switch a few weeks ago.

Re-sub.

Hi.

That's all.

Please continue.

Isn't the meme "Competent game, made by professionals"?  I think "competent" makes it a bit funnier because it's a lot softer than "good" or "quality".

Jon:"Is something lost if you forget that you have it?" This feels ike a sequel to my old email. Glad to see the concept is gaining acceptance! :)

"People know that my existence begins at a certain point and it continues on, hopefully, in perpetuity."

Right on, James. Right on! We've previously established that Gui is a vampire. So when are Jon and Greg going to join the Immortality Party Train?

I can imagine the future: "Hello and welcome to Radio Free Nintendo. It is Thursday, August 27th, 3018, episode 58700!" They'll only celebrate anniversaries every 10,000 episodes at that point. Jon will speak, but his lips won't move because he'll have gained the power of giving voice to his very thoughts. In a post-Brexit world where anything is possible, Greg will have a pet Yoshi thanks to ingenious genetic engineering. With Gui, you'll always hear a dull roar in the background. That'll be the air conditioning that can never be turned off, since thanks to global warming, Montreal will be turned into a humid swamp that will make Louisana seem like a cool Rocky Mountain breeze. And James will have just finished his fourth and final term as President of the North American Free Trade Zone after running a successful campaign of a kusoge in every pot and a Zodiac Tapwave in every garage. So much to look forward to!
