Title: Ignore option?
Post by: UncleBob on July 15, 2013, 04:47:57 AM
Is there a chance we could enable the ignore option?  I think there's more than a few posters who might be better off with it.

Actually there is an ignore list in forum profile, but i don't think it's working, cause i still see their posts.

Hm.  I was looking all around other people's profiles trying to see if there was an option to ignore them.

I see what you're talking about and it doesn't appear to work for me either. :(

Isn't that for private messages?

But you are a mod.... shouldn't you be doing the opposite of ignoring forum members?

If someone reports a post, I can still review it and act on it at that point.

Besides, the ignore option would probably be good for quite a few posters.

yeesh am I really that bad?

you know you really are tempting me to take back everything i said about you. :(

but in all seriousness the forums are just so small that ignoring one or two users could cause you to miss out on a huge part of a conversation.

everyone is a part of this forum in some way and everyone has their own ideas to bring to the table.

it is better in my experience to stand strong when faced by a person you don't like then to try to shove them into a corner and look the other way.

in middle school i was bullied relentlessly. the horrors i faced there were downright traumatizing. do i wish i could have not had that experience? yes. but at the same time i know that those experiences have changed me in ways that will follow me to the grave.

for example last year i took a class on sociology(absolutely fascinating area). many of my classmates struggled with understanding some of these ideas and it was when we reached the unit on Social Sanctions i realized why. my classmates were born, raised, and ultimately sheltered, in a small private school system, whereas i had been thrown into the public school system for three years. i had seen two sides of the coin that deals with society and youth.

my point is that running away from a person who you don't like is the wrong answer. If you can face that person and try to cope with whatever you don't like about them(which is much more easy to do when you don't want to hear their voice) then you will be the better man for it. you may even learn something from that person.

Slow down there, Pokepal. He never once said the ignore option was for him or that he wanted to use it on you. In fact, the original post of the thread shows the reason he asked about it was for other people to use no doubt in hopes that people will make less complaints about other posters if they don't see them and he doesn't have to deal with as many complaints. That's how I took it.

But I'm like you. I don't mind getting different views even if I don't always agree with them. However, I take a different of stance of just not bothering to respond or argue with somebody about them for the most part.

i'm trying to move there as well. isn't always easy.

But it would be better overall to PM the user with complaints(or to integrate the feedback thing i put on the karma thread and utilize that) then to try to outright ignore them. An ignore feature should be seen as a last resort.

Now now, I never said I didn't want to use it on him. :D

Teasing, of course.

Truth be told, I have only used the ignore option on one person on any forum.

You guys might find this hard to believe, but I tend to have a hard time holding my tongue when someone posts something insanely stupid or some kind of BS.

I found, with this other individual, having them on ignore gives me a mental reminder.  I usually read their posts, but having to click that "show anyway" option just gives me a reminder to not bother replying to them, because they're simply not interested in having a real discussion.  They just want to shout out their opinion and shout down anyone who disagrees.  I don't need that.

I'd say it's possible if we had a real ignore option here, I might opt to use it, just so I have that reminder - but pokepal, you're no where near that field of "not even worth it".  :D

Don't think of the ignore option as "running away".  Think of it as you're walking straight and there's a brick wall in front of you...  There's no use in asking it to move, so you might as well turn and walk the other direction.  You can continue on to new experiences while it sits there and never changes.

Don't worry Pokepal, he's talking about me. <3

I would prefer an ignore option where it deletes their last post 10 minutes after making submitting it.

Actually, I *do* sorta have that option... if I'm online ten minutes after they post. :D

How do i make a, err, private monetary donation to ensure the activation of such tools for my use?
