No matter what I do I cannot connect. I swear I have gotten every error message there is. Anyone have any tips?

Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube four years on: Dissapointments
« on: November 11, 2005, 03:59:34 AM »
Ok so more like 3 years and 51 weeks but whatever. Come back next week for the upbeat, happy version of this topic, undoubtedly without Ian.

ANYWAY

Since Microsoft seem intent on ending this generation a year early with their Xbox High Res™ I figure it's a good time to look back on the Gamecube up to now. Sure theres Zelda coming next year but we'll all be far too elated in the months following it's release to look at anything objectively. Not even Linkin Park could bring us down! Er what? Oh yeah Gamecube. Although I've had endless niggles, which I might get to later in a reply I've had four (4) big let downs with this console and I'm going to cry about them here. They are: online, third parties, market share and incomplete games.

Online
Ok so, Dreamcast showed us it was possible. PC online gaming was becoming commonplace and Nintendo announced two online adaptors. It was all looking very promising. People on IGN were creating Perfect Dark clans, F Zero racing leagues were discussed, MMORPG Pokemon was dreamed about. And what do we get? A crappy Dreamcast port hampered by exorbiant monthly fees and an almost concerted effort from Nintendo to destroy the chances of people obtaining the nessesary adaptors not to mention them maligning the entire concept of online gaming on monetary grounds. I was expecting a lot more and I've always been envious of Xbox Live.

Third Parties
These guys are fuckheads. Again it looked promising at first but it wasn't long before games began to be announced for PS2, Xbox and PC. While we are partly to blame because we refuse to buy their appaling games that sell so well on rival console, when they did bother putting the effort in we rewarded them in sales and what do we get? Oh yeah Nothing While PS2 and Xbox get to enjoy Burnout 3, or Pro Evolution Soccer or Soul Caliber 3. Ubi Soft, Acclaim and EA (to an extent) deserve the full fist for continuing supporting us and Nintendo.
Oh and while we laugh about it now, at the time losing Rare did hurt.

Market Share
**** we got demolished this time round. The Playstation juggernaught got stronger than we could possibly imagine. And while Microsoft may've lost billions of dollars on Xbox, they got what they wanted; our marketshare. Nintendo simply weren't persistent enough and couldn't drop the tiku tiku tiku!  tag as fast as they would've liked. While even without cult game turned biggest franchise in gaming (GTA) the PS2 would've still won this generation, Halo carried Xbox far further than it should've even been able to. It's hard to pin exactly where Xbox got the upper hand or all the factors involved but somehow we lost this.

Incomplete Games
I can forgive Luigi's Mansion, it needed to be there for launch. But Eternal Darkness, Zelda: Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures... What was going on? This isn't the Nintendo that polished and cherished it's games! Eternal Darkness dropped all the really amazing aspects that were planned. Wind Waker dropped countless dungeons and resorted to an elaborate treasure hunt to lengthen the game. Mario Sunshine dengrenated into a blue coin marathon. Star Fox just seemed to veer into a wall mid way through the game and never really recovered. The Gamecube library as a whole seems mared by rush jobs, half games and wasted potential.
Mind you, the games I mentioned all stomped weakness wherever it was found.

Ok I think I've wasted enough of your time now. Tell me what you were dissapointed with or any particular game that shamed it's legacy. Or tell me I'm a wanker.

Nintendo Gaming / Controlling Shooters on Revolution. A Thesis
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:10:47 AM »
Ok. It all came to me in a rush and I told the pietriots but OH NO MSN DIED AND DECIDED TO STOP SENDING MESSAGES! But now that i've punched MSN i've been able to think this through more and write it up.

OK so here it is.

Revolution's controller is going to revolutionise first person shooters more than we initially think. The genre has been dying all over again, having to resort to horror themes and generally making everything bigger and longer to improve itself. When people get excited over the ability to hold two different pistols at the same time you know we're heading towards a brick wall.

Everyone's already thought about simply aiming with the controller by tilting, as we would a mouse or second analogue stick. I propose however that with the revolution controller FPS games can move beyond that, beyond even what light guns offer, and offer true realism in handling firearms as done in real life. I'm talking blind shooting, shooting around corners, behind ourselves, over objects.

So far. Most people have accepted the obvious idea, to simply map the motion sensor as you would a mouse or right thumbstick. To look up and down and turn left or right. To aim. You gun remains shooting towards the middle of the screen.

I believe this to be a flawed approach. If you consider turning in the keyboard/mouse setup. You move the mouse towards the desired direction then lift it off the surface and back to your central position. If you do not do this and move back to centre, your character does the same, facing the original direction. When you apply this to a motion sensor, should the motion sensor be on at all time, we have no way to 'cancel' our movements as we can a mouse by lifting it. Therefore when we turn around a corner in a game we would have to hold the controller or our whole arm at 90° until we face our initial direction again. I dread to think of the difficulties we'de face holding our controller backwards, pointing away from the screen, should we ever need to backtrack. Because of this I suggest my own scheme.

My control scheme is as follows.
Detachable Thumbstick: Move forward and back and turn left or right. *

Motion sensor.
Moving the 'remote' left and right across a horizontal plane to reach left or right.
Tilting the 'remote' up down, twists left and right to aim.
Moving the 'remote' up and down to raise and lower your gun.

Crosspad: Left and right: to strafe. Up and down to look up or down*

Under my scheme, we wield the controller as we would a real firearm. My approach  intergrates the precision aiming of lightgun games and the player controlled movement of traditional first person shooters. But it takes it up another notch.

Imagine a situation we're you're taking cover behind a wall. Around the corner to your left, enemies are opening fire, awaiting for you to appear. In a traditional FPS you would have to move out into the open and take out the gunmen while standing in the way of their gunfire. But now, with revolution, you could just edge up with your back pressed against the wall. Then at the corner. Reach around, moving the controller around your shoulder, and just firing. In person you would be holding the controller behind you, pressing the B trigger. In the game your character would we shooting blindly into the room, with only their arm exposed. Maybe you might be lucky, but if not you can still just swing around and run in firing at enemies as you would a light game game.

But there's much more you could do. Taking cover behind a crate you could raise your arm to shoot over the top, or failing that, lob a grenade, simulating a throwing action with your arm, pressing the trigger to release the explosive. In multiplayer while running past an open doorway you could fire into it, just incase you hit someone, while not breaking stride or changing direction.

In case you just skipped all this or didn't understand. To put it simply, in shooters, you should use the motion sensor to replicate the movements of the characters arm. Use the crosspad and thumbstick to take care of his feet and head.

*I say this because I'm used to the "Goldeneye" setup. For those who want to strafe with the thumbstick or walk with the cosspad it really doesn't matter, they could map it like that. I just find speed and precision in turning to be more important than strafeing.

From the PGC Forum Rules
You may add a custom avatar (also called a "author icon") to your profile.  It should be no more than 100x100 pixels in physical size, and no more than 20KB in data size.  It should not contain any offensive graphics or needless animation, and you agree to remove or change your avatar if requested by a moderator.  Planet GameCube Forums reserves the right to remove the avatar feature at any time if it is deemed to be causing problems with page loading times, or causing unnecessary strain on server resources.  Use of images in your avatar falls under the same rules as linking to any image in the Forums ... they must be hosted on your own personal webspace, and should not be linked to any other site's bandwidth without their knowledge.  Violation of this rule will result in your being banned from the Forums.

That's funny, because I wasn't contacted at all over my avatar. I'm guessing it was removed due to the usage of the word ƒag. An explanatioin would've been nice.

Regardless, you only reserve the right, according to your own rules, to remove my avatar if it causes unnessesary server strain or page load problems. Since it clocked in at under 2kbs I doubt this was the reasons. It should be the moderator responsible who carries the "I don't think the rules apply to me" avatar.

Nintendo Gaming / Kirby: Cursed Canvas
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:56:02 AM »
Ok now the more Nintendo Australia deny Kirby's existence, the more I want to play Kirby games. I predict it has 3% chance of making it to Australian shores.
So anyway, this game looks entirely fistworthy and I need to figure out how to import it when it hits stateside.

General Chat / MP3s are destroying music.
« on: February 14, 2005, 04:59:41 AM »
Once upon a time music meant something to me. I'ld hear a song and it would remind me of some moment, some activity my brain associated with that song. Celion Dion's song "My Heart Will Go On" reminds me not of Titanic but all the way back in 1999 and my end of Primary School dance and the girl I danced with. "Don't Say You Love Me" by M2M reminds me of the Pokemon craze (also in 1999) in general. "Born Slippy" by Underworld reminds me of Rottenest island, where we stayed and it received regular airplay on Triple J at the time. Music was the soundtrack to your life and hearing a song would spark reminicence.

No more.

You may've noticed that the songs I mentioned are rather old and (with the exception of Born Slippy) poppy songs. That's because not long after that songs no longer seemed to hold a place and time to me.

iTunes keeps track of your most played songs. "Special Needs" by Placebo has been played 163 times since it was added in January last year. I love the song but I feel as though that number is ridiculous. I'm sure that if I'm lucky enough to hear it on the radio sometime soon, regardless of where I am, I'm sure a mental image of being at my computer will slip into my mind. Frankly most memories associated with the computer aren't memorable at all. I'm only on it to wile away boredom and avoid the rest of the family. It almost seems a waste of such a good song to not have it linked with something cooler.

This is of course made worse by the fact that lots and lots of songs now remind me of the computer. And even songs that used to have some meaning now seem to be losing it after they get added to my iTunes playlist.

I don't know if I'm selfish expecting more from music or that I'm the only one I can truely blame but either way it saddens me. Anyone else feel the same way?

General Chat / Weakness roll call!
« on: November 20, 2004, 02:45:25 AM »
I can remember back on the ezbaords making a similar list of arseholes and encouraging people to add names that they feel should be added. The intension was for a big, lighthearted flame fest to relieve the obvious tension and friction other disscussions were generating. It would've also served as an area for constructive critisism of other board users whcih would ultimately lead toa better, more awesome community.
Actually that's a total lie I just wanted to flame people and start a fight.

Needless the say the post lasted about 3 hours before a mod got hold of it and deleted it. Also I listed Infernal Monkey first and he's actually really fistworthy, how wrong I was. (please remember this was before I awoke the power of fist from within me. I was a fool)

But now... the baords are pretty much unmoderated except for that Dr Zoidberg guy who I've been sleeping with and wouldn't destroy a thing I say. Another lie, well just the sleeping with part of it actually. So the time is right for me to unviel the new improved and renamed: List of Weakness.

There are a few rules.
1. Post one name only.
2. Provide one sentance only justifying this person's weakness.
3. You can't nominate chain chomp, or chompy as I affectionately refer to him is when he's not present.
4. No bitching if your listed.
5. No reporting to mods.
6. Mods: Don't delete.
Note: If your avatar states taht you don't think the rules apply to you, you don't have to follow the rules.
Note 2: I encourage the lsiting of banned users. Noteably P.I.A.C (name parsed to avoid smiley.)

So presenting the first entrant tot he list of weakness.

Because he takes me seriously.

General Chat / Those weak iPod tatoo ads from hp PGC are running.
« on: November 20, 2004, 02:29:56 AM »
Well every few pages I browse im confronted with one of an assorted collection of rubbish advertising from Hewlett Packard to insult what's left of my intelligence.

*what follows is a mindless rant, you may want to click the back button is you hate being entertained and/o you take stuff too seriously.* No names mentioned Ness_the_Mess

I mean WHAT THE HELL! hp are advertising their product with the slogan "you" and the general vibe is that your iPod and you in general will be far more unique if you buy their alledged product. But just how unique are you if you have to buy a COMMERCIAL product from a company anyway? And I bet you'll feel really f---ing individual when you see total strangers with the same pattern on their iPods. I'm sure it'll reflect your "different" and "extreme" personality too, earning you unprecedented praise and respect from all those people you actually don't like but want the attension of anyway.

Or you could just throw $50 into the river, at least then it doesn't line the pockets of some rich exectutive laughing his arse off at the gullibility of humans.

Want to be unique? Scribble over your iPod yourself.

Yeah this is jsut a small rant from me. If you wanna check out more of my stuff then go to my Gurnal of Fist for other hilarity. I know that ATM it only contains an addmitadly weak number of entries; 3. But with empty days ahead and plenty of weakness to comment on (including what should be a riot of weakness; schoolies) I'll garuntee there will be 10 entries over the next two weaks. Actually no I wont, garruntees only make people weak and dependable. If your rubbish fails, too bad.

Nintendo Gaming / Ridge Racer (e-rr)
« on: October 08, 2004, 08:00:49 AM »
Looking at those screenshots Ridge Racer DS is looking almost identical to Ridge Racer 64. Im citing the desert track and the more country enviroments here.

While Ridge Racer 64 is possibly the finest installment of the Ridge Racer series, I don't want to DS to be all ports/remakes. Eitherway good to see an awesome racing game on the system.

NWR Feedback / State of the boards: WEAK!
« on: July 20, 2004, 06:34:35 AM »
Right well I don't often come here and returning today it's easy to see why. Weakness is rife in these forums. I mean just browsing random subjects today I found incredible levels of weakness, this is a pretty good example of what I'm talking about, as is this.

What we need is a fist team who go around getting rid of weakness that is holding down the forums to release the inner fist.

General Chat / Rip Curl Gameboy, who gives a damn?
« on: February 11, 2004, 11:14:20 PM »
Ok seriously that has got to be the ugliest of all the GBA designs I've seen. Rip Curl are dogshit.
Seriously what demographic are they trying to appeal to with a rip curl GBA? If your old and want to buy a GBA, you probably dont give a stuff about surf brands and image, I mean why would you buying what is essentially thought of a kids toy? So obviously the only people that would buy it are tryhard 11 year olds, who want to look cool with Rip Curl and also play the Tony Hawk games they will most certainly want to play. Stupid desicions like this only lead to the N-Gage, so i say Nintendo get rid of this Rip Curl nonsense right now.

General Chat / Offical cool stuff RABicle bought in Singapore thread.
« on: February 01, 2004, 04:11:44 AM »
Well I decided to concentrate on stuff that you couldn't get in Australia. So a Freeloader, Ikaruga (japanese) One of the SNES shaped controllers, Harvest Moon (GBA), Zelda Special Collectors Edition (you know, the compilation) and Prince of Persia (cant wait till release) were all first up. I was thinking about a broadband adaptor but Money was running short after the Blue/Silver GBA SP (complete with complimentery pirated copy of Castlevania)
Tips for travellers to Singapore.
- Changi Airport is a ripoff.
- Dont go looking for young asian girls till after school is over, unless you speak Japanese or Korean. Asian girls are all slim and look young, they could be 28 years old
- Sim Lim Square, I believe that is Malay for 'Geek Heaven'
- Dont smuggle drugs into the country, penalty is death by hanging.
- Dont smuggle chewing gum into the country, penatly is $10,000 fine.
- Eat some good curry while your there.
- Visit a Chinese Temple.
- If your a Jehova, dont tell anybody about it.

General Chat / Would you be interested in a Nintendo racing game fansite?
« on: September 27, 2003, 09:27:56 AM »
I've been thinking about this for awhile now and seeing as GBA-AU died due to matters out of my hands, I need a new website to occupy myself with. And I thought I could make some kind of fansite of a similar mould to many Zelda sites based around Nintendo's racing games. This means Mario Kart, F Zero, 1080°, Wave Race, Excitebike and any other Nintendo developed racing titles (ie. Kirby's Air Ride)

Now all of this is thinking aloud but would any of you guys be interested in such a site and would you consider contributing?

Nintendo Gaming / Cant EAD make decent graphics?
« on: August 22, 2003, 04:41:22 AM »
Looking through those Mario Kart screenshots got me thinking. "Does EAD just not care about graphics or are they just crap?"
I'm mainly referring to the geometry or our figures, or the blockiness if you want to call it that. If you run down the EAD developed games on gamecube, Animal Crossing, Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Mario Kart, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion etc. they are all very low in polygon counts. This is a bit of a bad image for Nintendo as some of their biggest games, look average when compared to your average Xbox or PS2 game, turning off the joe Blogs of the gaming world. Even turning off the young market who believe graphics is everything.
We all know the gamecube is powerful and capable of amazing graphics, as seen by the example shown to us my Retro Studios, Capcom, Nintendo System Technology, Amusement Vision and others. It just seems strange that EAD, arguably the single greatest and most influential of all video game developers, who would've had a say in the way the cube hardware was put togethor, produce such shoddy graphics.
I'm guessing that a) They dont care, graphics dont make a game great (I agree, but they can make a very good game even better)
or b) The way they are making their games is saving more processor grunt for the dynamics of the gameworld than the graphics.

You people agree?

http://boards.harrypotter.warnerbros.com/web/hpus/messages.jsp?board=Slytherin&topic=29431578&pageOffset=2

Now before you all ask what the hell I was doing on the official Harry potter message boards I'll try to explain why I was there. Ummm. We reacently got the DVD of Chamber of Secrets and after exploring the extras on there just about everything was saying "Goto harry potter dot com goto harry potter dot com" in it so I did. After playing the quiditch game for a while I hit the forums to see what the hell happens in there. I managed to get caught up in one thread. The stupidest, most pointless thread in internet history. As usuall Im rabicle in the thread and the only one being intelligent and flaming the little kiddies at the same time.

Also because harry potter boards are stupid the first message is on page three and the oldest ones on the bottoms so you have to scroll UPwards to read it in order.

Anyway click it and laugh, if for some obscure reason you also have an account there then just add some crazy stuff on the end.

Update on how to get there without problems Because of Harry Potter dot com's stupid linking system, you have to click the link, then type in the slytherin password which is WAND. THEN if it doesn't take you to the stupid thread hit abck on your browser and it take you there, if that doens't work hit my link again.
