Nintendo Gaming / RE:Amazing Deals for DS & GBA
« on: March 13, 2006, 09:28:39 AM »
Does anybody know of any pre-order bonuses/deals going on for Metroid Prime: Hunters?

I won't be able to play it for awhile, but I'm tired of missing out on fun (or even stupid, I don't care!) pre-order stuff. Heck, I would even take a measly deal like $29.99 (out of protest of this whole $34.99 business).

vudu - ... Ok, a small clarification needs to be made here: I meant PLAYING games, and He knows it, so I'm golden.

Artimus - You've inspired me to update my sig, and I thank you for that.

Shy Guy, TVman, PaLaDiN - Thanks for the support. If I make it to the end, I'll feel great about it. And if I don't, well... I'll just lie and say I did*

*see, if I'm already going to Hell, what's a little lie going to do anyways, right?

Eh, I think it's good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes, and games are definitely my comfort zone.

Seriously, I'm gonna try to do some other things that I've been neglecting lately. I was an art major in school, and one of my favorite classes was book-making. I'm gonna sit down tomorrow and make a book using a Japanese stab-binding, with some short stories I've written as the content.

Although I get a lot of enjoyment out of gaming, I think I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of this too, AND I'll have a cool book to show for my efforts.

Think of my giving up video games as "exercise for the mind" if you want. That's basically what it is.

Well, ok, I didn't read the ENTIRE Internet...

I mean, some of the sites aren't even in English.

for Lent.

Weep for me.

I'm having a hard time after only a couple days in:
• Can't check my turnip prices daily in AC:WW. And what about my budding relationships w/ Brewster and Sable?
• Won an eBay auction for Killer 7. Got the game, but can't play it. Read the manual like 3 times.
• Having to get my "gaming fix" by reading articles and posts about other people enjoying games.

And now, I just finished reading the Internet. I guess I'll go sit in a corner and stare at the wall or something.

MaryJane's got a point here. Anyone who's played a FPS on a computer with a keyboard and mouse knows how easy it is to run and gun quickly and accurately. After being raised on FPSs on the computer with mouselook, I've hated playing console FPSs because of the clunky, groggy movement and aiming of the dual analog setup. Metroid Prime 1/2 sidestepped this by offering lock-on. But now, both the revmote AND the touchscreen on the DS allow a similar sort of freedom, so they're taking advantage of it.

... But Ian also has a point, in that the distinction between the two game types (FPS vs. FPA) is becoming somewhat blurred with MP:H. Of course, changing such a basic feature as lock-on or free-aim is going to change the emphasis of the action somewhat. But how much? And I don't think that the only difference between a FPA and a FPS is in having or not having lock-on. The big unknown right now is the single player quest. If it's as beefy as has been implied, and more importantly, there's major emphasis put on exploration (the single-most distinguishing characteristic between a FPS and a FPA for me), then I'd still label this game a FPA.

Come on, though, we can argue all night long about what genre to classify this game under... Allow me to pose a question: would a Metroid game by any other genre name still play as sweet?

I really dig the game, but there ARE some things that could have been tweaked or added to make it better. Here's some of my impressions after a week and a half with the game.

The Great:
* Engaging, unique, open-ended and ADDICTIVE gameplay featuring emphases on exploration, unlocking new areas and being happily surprised at the wild discoveries you'll make.
* A wacky storyline and surprisingly well-developed, memorable/lovable characters that drive the plot forward however fast you want.
* Just doing random tasks never got old to me (scrubbing the floor, etc.), even after I had no need for Happy Points.
* Lots of sidequests lengthen the game and add to the charm - to be technical, there's just a cubic buttload of stuff to do.
* Chibi's just so darn cute.

The Iffy:
* Loses some balance towards the end regarding the money system and figuring out what to do next to proceed (an often-unhelpful help system).
* Could've used another room. This would have lengthened the "uncharted territory" part of the game, which is arguably the most rewarding. By about 1/4 of the way through, you'll have seen every room there is to see. Just think of all the missed opportunities at not including a bathroom!
* It's been said before in multiple reviews, but it's silly that there's no way to speed up the flow of text.

The Ugly:
* While the graphics ooze unique style and art direction and there is often a lot going on, character and environment poly counts are generally low (Chibi looks great, however), and are sometimes reminiscent of N64 graphics. Some chugging in busy areas (Jenny's room).
* Babble-speech is surprisingly low-quality considering you'll hear it often, which is in sharp contrast to the in-game music (which is generally fun, catchy and of good quality).

So, with that out of the way, keep in mind that I found the good qualities to far outweigh the bad. And the main gripe in reviews that I've seen, the system of being called back to homebase at the end of each half-day, didn't bother me at all. Chibi-Robo can be almost solely blamed for my sleep deprivation this past week, as it has what may be considered the "Magician's Scarf Addiction Factor" (each new bit of the game you solve leads you to something else, and onto another beyond that, etc., turning an "I'll only play for one day" jaunt into a two-plus-hour expedition).

Verdict:
Highly enjoyable despite any faults that happen to come along for the ride.

So, now that we know that...

1) MP:H will feature voice chat, and
2) that the DS Lite still has the same headphone plug-in to accommodate a headset...

Does this mean we'll see some headsets – possibly first-party – coming out soon? A headset with a mic right up in your face would provide for clearer communications and less background noise, I'd wager.

In-store deal on Chibi Robo, which should be available by 4pm today (so they say).

$39.99 at Fry's Electronics.

I can't justify an hour drive to spend $40 that I don't even have, but if you've got a Frys in your area and are interested, you'd be a fool not to jump on this.

A FOOL, I SAY.

Yep, that was a great match - me, you, TYP and Frank.

It was pretty cool, everyone was pretty equal in skill, so we stayed as one bunched-up group for much of the races, making wipeouts quite common, yet easier to recover from. CRAZINESS!

What's Frank's PGC handle, btw?

Darknight, I agree. I played against Mario my first match tonight, and got, well, to put it nicely, DESTROYED.
So now I get to join this rapidly-swelling "rear-whooped-by-Mario" club.

The only time I got close to winning was when I hit him with 2-3 red shells and a blue shell, almost all in a row.

Crud, it makes that blue shell* at the finish line on Yoshi Circuit hurt even more...

Good races, though - you guys are intense!

* that knocked me from 1st place to 3rd mere inches from the finish line on the final lap! Frick!

OK -

I have yet to play a friends match, so...
I challenge you.
All of you.

Add me (see sig). Play. LOSE. Repeat.

Oh also, was playing this dude named Lynx in Rivals, one on one, and we were neck-and-neck till I won the last two races, just barely, so I got the W. Then we rematched, and I won the first race and he DROPPED. I believe the technical term for this is PWN@G3 SUPR3M3Z. Moral? Watch out for Lynx Mastah Droppah, or Beware the Decoy, for he Rides Softly and Carries a Blue Shell.

There, hopefully that's enough smack talk to get some Friends matches going

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Battalion Wars: Looks like a riot!
« on: September 25, 2005, 09:14:28 PM »
Picked this game up yesterday, and have put a few hours into it. Some impressions...

After the obligatory "become comfortable with the controls" phase, I can honestly say that it is in fact a riot. Micro-managing can be awfully satisfying at times (like targeting my Missile vets on a pesky gun ship and watching it go down in flames a second later), or stationing two heavy tanks at choke points at opposite ends of the battle field, and switching back and forth to wreak havoc in multiple places at once. Four hours in, and the controls have become all but transparent. It's fun just driving (the vehicles' controls are reminiscent of those in Halo) or flying around; you could almost forget there's fighting to do.

It's also interesting, while your allies' AI is respectable, how much of a difference you as the player make on the battlefield with seemingly small or insignificant choices. Your choice of unit (light tank or gunship?), your choice of where to tell your troops to guard, whether you take all your troops at once or form an expeditionary force, etc. all have VERY significant effects on how your troops will have held up at the end of the day. It was sometimes surprising how quickly I could lose a mission if I wasn't careful about my planning. Luckily, any frustration this caused was greatly overshadowed by the "Ahh, if I do it THIS way, I should fare better - ok I'll try again!" feeling.

Besides the challenging/addicting gameplay, I'm finding myself further drawn in by the parallels this game runs to the Advance Wars games - the presence/mood brought by the COs, end-of-mission rankings, and especially the unit checks/balances. This game very much belongs in the "Wars" family, even if it's a (slightly) different genre. The number of similarities surprised me because some reviews have downplayed, or at least not elaborated much on, this relation. But it makes the game feel cozy and familiar, even if the gameplay is different - pretty cool, since I loved the GBA entries in the series.

Thus far, I'm decidedly impressed - no lingering regrets about the $50 price of admission here.

I had some doubts before I picked up the game, but they've been laid to rest primarily because the game's deeper than I was expecting.

I picked up my copy yesterday, and named my white chihuahua "Dingo" (which may or may not be short for "Nindingo")

I got a kick out of how Dingo seems to be, er, "marking his territory" at the same spot each time we go for a walk (shows up as a little blue circle on the map).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Revolution Logos?
« on: May 15, 2005, 05:20:52 PM »
That's an interesting thought, blackfootsteps, considering if NOA would have a say in the final logo. It's the main reason I MIGHT think these are fake.

However, I'm a designer in an advertising and design agency, and one of our core services is brand identity development (aka "making logos"). Rick's right: Photoshop is an industry standard design program, and is often used in the creation of identity systems. I tend more towards Illustrator, at least in the beginning, but to each his own. It'd be crazy (or at least, a waste of billable time) to go all out and do 3D renders or other such stuff in a Preliminary Design Phase (which is what these designs appear to be). Add all the polish to your logo AFTER the client likes your direction.

If these are fakes, whoever made them at least shows a good sense of the design process (check the version numbering system, for example).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Let's Talk Controller
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:58:56 PM »
Hmm... I was thinking about this the other day. Say for a minute that both the "wireless" and "gyroscope" theories are for real. Wireless means there'll need to be power, and gyroscopes mean the controllers are meant to be moved around quite a bit...

There're watches that use the kinetic energy generated from walking/moving around to power them. Could this be used as at least a supplementary form of power for the controller, to help extend battery life maybe?

Granted, I don't know a lot (ok, anything at all, really) about how these watches work. And I'm pretty sure there'd need to be a "main" power source (batteries of some kind)... but hey, we're talking about revolutionary controllers here, right?
