Nintendo Gaming / RE:1080 Avalanche or SSX3
« on: October 24, 2003, 10:23:42 AM »
The SSX franchise never sparked my interest and it doesn't look like this will be changing anytime soon with SSX3. There's only room for one snowboarding game in my library and that honor will go to 1080. I guess I just have too many fond memories of the N64 gem. Up until than I had never touched any other sports game. Of course this was years before SSX came into being so it came too little too late to have a similar impact, but that's not my problem.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Shocking Resident Evil announcement next week
« on: October 24, 2003, 09:52:35 AM »
Part of me wants this to happen (Resident Evil 2 remake on the Gamecube) while another part trembles in fear at the prospect of having to confront the Gamecube incarnation of a licker with who-knows-what new abilities. My worst nightmare: having to run unarmed, aimlessly down corridors in a revamped police station with a super-licker trailing on the walls and ceilings behind you when the lights suddenly go out. Oh man, I don't think I could ever come out of such an experience in one piece, let alone with my sanity fully intact. The N64 verision is still giving me many sleepless nights to this day. I'll never be able to get the sound those razor-sharp claws made on solid ground out of my head. It had such a psychological impact because you knew there was one nearby but couldn't see it and dreaded the inevitable confrontation. It's at these times that trusty 12-gauge became your best friend.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:the deal with the new star wars?
« on: October 24, 2003, 08:55:54 AM »
I've yet to encounter this so far elusive 'lockup' problem in Rebel Strike (or Rogue Leader) that some have alluded to, and I doubt I ever will. It either must be a bad copy or something wrong with the system itself. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter because i've seen time and time again how careless people can be with their systems that it's just scary to fathom loning out any of mine to anyone but a handfull. Most remain oblivious to how sensitive and fragile consoles truly are (yet some want harddrives and other more delicate components built in, go figure...)

So far I have been having fun with Rebel Strike despite the amount of negative criticism its been receiving, and as long as this remains the case I could give a less care what some magazine says. These biased reviews reflect someone else's preferences and not my own, so they are irrevelent. Thus the only opinions that truly matter are that of my own.

And as for the on-foot missions, I must be the only one here who did not find them clunky and repetitive. Sure the camera could benefit from some tweaking, but other than that, I found this latest feature to be a worthy addition. Some suggestions to Factor 5: include the option to go prone and fire your weapon, implement a much needed first-person perspective just like the ship cockpit views, allow for some simple hand-to-hand combat moves because there were numerous times close contact with enemies was unavoidable, and lastly, just don't hold back next time; go all out and make these missions an integral part of the experience because there's just so much potential here.

What you guys are saying seems to be in concurrment with what I heard; we definitely won't be seeing the original trilogy on DVD until after the release of Episode III.

Regarding the possibility of Factor 5 porting the Rogue Squadron series to the X-box, this would be next to impossible considering Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike were both built solely from the ground up for the Gamecube hardware to exploit its many strengths (these aren't what you would call port friendly). Plus I don't see how the graphics could be improved upon seeing as how the Gamecube versions are already running with practically every effect imaginable enabled such as bumpmapping, realtime lighting, volumetric fog and (in the case of Rebel Strike) a new light scattering technology that makes for some awe-inspiring sunsets. X-box fans wouldn't gain any bragging rights here. All that these ports would prove is that the console is at the very least capable of running the game, but that would be like a step down if you ask me once Factor 5 reveals their next project which, as hard as it may be to believe is no doubt going to top Rebel Strike in the visual department.

This brings up another point. Factor 5 seems much too preoccupied with other projects to devote precious resources to begin developing for other consoles. In addition to a possible Pilot Wings sequel, they have already alluded to having other projects in the works for the Gamecube. You also have to remember they do more then just make games. They're specialty also seems to rest in hardware; they designed the Gamecube's sound chip (how much you want to bet they will be just as involved in Nintendo's next console?), adapted Pro Logic II for use in Gamecube games, and just recently, solved the issue of high quality video by implementing Divx compression technology.

Lastly, there is absolutely nothing keeping Factor 5 exclusive to Nintendo. For some unknown reason they choose to develop for them only, and have frequently expressed their unwavering satisfaction with the relations they currently enjoy with the Big N. If Factor 5 really wanted to go multiplatform they would have done so long ago.

Such strong contradictions cause me to question the validity of this latest rumor.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:is thier a good shooting game for the cube.?
« on: October 12, 2003, 02:12:51 AM »
Doesn't matter who thought of the idea first; what really matters is who implements it best.

As for Messiah, I always wondered what happend to that game because it just abruptly fell off the radar at one point after being hyped up as one of the most revolutionary. This suggests to me it was a flop because it never resurfaced again after that.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rogue squadron bonus disc
« on: August 29, 2003, 09:46:43 PM »
Not sure, my gamestop didn't even know about the bonus disk when I went to reserve it about a week ago. They said though they'd call me if they heard anything. They were even more clueless when I told them there would be one for Mario Kart.

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda getting milked?
« on: June 16, 2003, 02:29:35 PM »
This is what happens when you don't think out the possible puns, double-meanings and whatnot in your titles. I think a far better, less suggestive one for this thread would have been "Zelda franchise getting milked". Than again, it is interesting to gauge how many perverted, sick-minded people there are inhabiting this board from the amount of provocative responses. Makes me glad we're seperated by miles of telephone wire... Heh, just kidding.

Getting back on topic here, I think Nintendo is the last company that should be singled out for milking their franchises. There are far worse perpetrators out there, and Nintendo themselves rank pretty low on the list just like with violent videogames. I suppose the only reason they are becoming a little less conservative with their franchises (Zelda especially) are because of the sheer amount of sequels being put out by other developers. This could also be another example of Nintendo's changing strategy in the videogame industry, putting out more titles in less time. Isn't this what you people wanted in the first place? You bickered about delays, and game droughts in the last generation, and now that Nintendo is beginning to adapt their strategy to address these past grievences or try to remedy them your still not satisfied? Which is it people? I've seen people complaining in similar threads like this one, and that suggests to me they have no idea what they truly want to begin with.

Nintendo Gaming / Resident Evil 4...Going to the next level?
« on: May 29, 2003, 02:04:09 PM »
This is what really scares me the most. You may have been cut off from most human contact and be surrounded by swarms of zombies and monsters in other Resident Evil games, but you always found comfort knowing you had a pistol or 12-gauge by your side to keep most dangers at bay. After what I witnessed in the direct feed trailer that comfort might no longer exist in Resident Evil 4.

Whatever that apparition-like being was it was unsettling just to watch Leon fire at it from across a hallway in vain while it approached him undeterred wielding a hook and chain. It was almost as if the bullets did not even phase that thing to begin with. Couple this with the possiblity that it could materialize abruptly out of nowhere (say like right on the other side of a door before you open it) and that would be even more demoralizing. Zombies are bad enough but just imagine dealing with an enemy that likes to mess with your head like that.

9
Someone in a similar thread at the Nintendojo forums pointed out this statement was derived from an editorial, therefore it's credibility is put into question. I did not believe it to begin with because there are many contradictions. If there are no more exclusives for the Gamecube due to poor sales then tell me, what are Virtual Fighter Quest and F-Zero GX? F-Zero may be a Nintendo franchise, but it is still being made by Sega and is definitely exclusive. Virtual Figher Quest, when it was first announced was only confirmed to be in development for the Gamecube. No recent articles or rumors so far have suggested otherwise.

Furthermore, I recall reading an article when Triforce was first announced and it stated that Sega would be supplying a number of titles for the hardware. More then a year has elapsed and the only ones that have been confirmed are F-Zero AC and a soccer game. I doubt a couple of games are all Sega had in mind when entering into the agreement so there are bound to be more. Also considering they would be built solely for the Triforce hardware this would make porting pretty much impossible thus pratically sealing their exclusivity.

I see too many holes in this claim and disregard it as nothing more then speculation or even rumor.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Power's Defense of GameCube
« on: May 24, 2003, 10:41:32 AM »
All I am going to say is "all is fair in love and war."

If I remember correctly the Thornado engine was in development for five years. It wasn't a total waste though as its obviously been intergrated into Rogue Leader's engine to create the one for Rebel Strike. This makes me wonder if Silicon Knights isn't doing something similar with the Too Human engine and Twin Snakes...minus cancelling the other game in favor it of course.

And regarding Termin&Anakin's idea of posting pictures of our rooms on the internet, I got posters up, but they definitely aren't of Nintendo, videogames or what most people's mothers (in my case aunts) would approve of for that matter. In fact, right now my aunt and I are having a little difference of opinion over one that I dared to put on my front door. At least every week she threatens to take some markers to it and "draw a sweater on her" lol.

Could you provide a link? I was there yesterday but couldn't locate it.

Quote

remember when the video game market used to be about the games?

Those times leading from the end of the SNES era all the way up to the N64's golden years were the good ol days and some of the best I had. Things were more simple back then where the only exposure you had to game sales were from commercials announcing the next four N64 games that achieved million seller status. That was all there was to it.

Then around the time Project Dolphin was announced this cursed console war debate was born and has just been sucking all the fun out of gaming ever since. No wonder my interest has been waning with every passing month. I still haven't gotten a Gamecube yet and have been procrastinating since the release of Eternal Darkness last summer. Heck, I even went so far as to preorder Wind Waker despite being Cubeless just so I wouldn't miss out on the bonus disk promotion. Now with this new Gameboy player offer, again I will still find myself holding out. I've had numerous opportunities to buy a Gamecube, but I always opted for something else like music CDs, posters or new components for my computer instead. That new promotion along with games like Rebel Strike and Resident Evil 4 will probably prove to be too much to pass up in the end but what about after the Gamecube's lifespan? I keep asking myself whether that same urge that prompted me to get a Gamecube will still be there for the next generation of consoles. I never imagined I would be asking myself this.

Remember people these numbers are coming from the same company that gave out those overblown specs claiming the PS2 could pull off 75 million polygons. That fact alone automatically causes me to disregard just about anything they say as rubbish.

Glad to see I may not be the only one who is guilty of purposely calling Mei Ling on the codec just to hear her gossip. And if it was her calling and interrupting you almost every damn minute in MGS2 I don't think I would have minded as much either.

I know you guys are tired of technical jibberish but this little bit might interest you anyways. Theres an article at Nintendojo with an interview between Nintendo Power and Hideo Kojima where they talk about the game. One of the questions asks whether their doing anything in Twin Snakes that they couldn't in the original. Bumpmapping was specifically mentioned. Take that as you will but I see it as further proof that Silicon Knights is doing more then what they have been letting on so far.

Nintendo Gaming / Lack of everything...
« on: May 16, 2003, 10:34:14 PM »
There was an article on Nintendojo about a week ago or two ago that said Spaceworld 2k3 was going to happen. I'll have to wait for the light version to come down before I can go digging for it. I know it was there. If it turns out to be true this would explain why Nintendo opted not to show us the new, original games they hinted were going to be present this E3.

Nintendo Gaming / Star Fox
« on: May 15, 2003, 11:30:33 PM »
If theres two worthwhile lessons I learned from watching the trailer there not to pilot an arwing in the urban settings or confront a landmaster while on foot.
At least this time around the people on foot will have more structures and barriers to seek cover behind. That was not the case in the last games very open deathmatch areas. You had to constantly watch the sky and the ground at the same time or you would either get divebombed by an arwing or turned into roadkill by the landmaster.

Nintendo Gaming / THIS is why I am lsing faith in the 'Cube.
« on: May 15, 2003, 09:15:20 AM »
I too will be purchasing Halo for the PC along with Doom III, Half Life 2, Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Galaxies, Counterstrike Condition Zero and Jedi Academy. All of them should run just dandy on my Geforce3.
On top of that i'll also be enjoying the best the Gamecube has to offer including Mario Kart Double Dash, Star Fox Armada, Resident Evil 4,  Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike, Final Fantasy Chronicles, Metriod Prime II, Pikmin II, F-Zero GX, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, Soul Calibur II, Beyond Good & Evil, and Too Human. There is more where that came from but I think I got my point across with just those alone. Unlike those few vague reasons the author of this thread used to justify his losing faith in the Gamecube the ones I listed are far better examples of why I am not following suit.

Nintendo Gaming / Geist: Coolest game style ever!
« on: May 15, 2003, 12:39:04 AM »
It does not matter who thought of the idea first, what really matters is who implements it best. All you gain from conceiving it are bragging rights which is nothing to boast about if you are unable to realize the idea's full potential in the first place. Messiah (remembered hearing hype about this one but it suddenly disappeared off the radar and I assumed it had flopped) and that other game I heard mentioned obviously did not accomplish such and disappeared into obscurity. Therefore thats all in the past and should stay there. Those games had their chance and failed miserably. Now its time for Geist to carry the baton. With Nintendo taking N-space under their wing there is no doubt the potential of this concept will be realized.
And If I were some of you I would watch what I blurt out about N-space being an inferior developer. If i'm not mistaken people thought just as highly of Retro not to long ago and of course they all ate their words. And Gamefreak, was not Retro just another inexperienced startup developer no one had heard of prior to being given the Metriod license by Nintendo? Oh I can still recall all the negative opinions people had when they learned the sacred Metriod license was being warped into a FPS hybrid by an obscure, novice developer conceived by Nintendo.
As for the graphics do the words still in development get through those thick skulls of yours? What makes you assume the visuals cannot or will not be improved with time. Jeez, start thinking in the long term for once.

Nintendo Gaming / OFFICIAL Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes Discussion
« on: May 01, 2003, 07:45:35 AM »
This is excellent news for me. I got the chance to play the original almost nonstop on my friend's PSX for a whole weekend but never managed to beat it. I remember leaving off on the puzzle involving the temperature-sensitive keycard which I never figured out. Anyone know how close I was to beating the game? I know it had to be pretty close after defeating lets see Raven, Sniper Wolf, Revolver Oclet, the helicopter gunship, the crazy psy guy who made your controller rumber (early insanity effects anyone?). Oh, and I how could I forget that crazy ninja.
I've also had the chance to spend a decent amount of time with MGS2 and after playing it I can easily say I still find the experience with the first MGS to the be the most memorable and fun. I can't wait to see what kind of overhaul Denis gives it. I'm automatically sold.

Nintendo Gaming / So.. uh.. Pilotwings by Factor5 at e3?
« on: April 30, 2003, 10:04:09 PM »
Not a big fan either but my friend and I did give it a rent one time. Out of all the vehicles and devices you could use we found the jet pack to be the most fun. Also I remember one of the levels had you shooting rockets at targets but there was this giant robot that reacted funny when you put a rocket up his rear hehehe.

TalkBack / Mario Kart on GameCube Details
« on: April 28, 2003, 08:42:40 AM »
I have no problem with people being negative about something but they really need to come up with far better reasons then "it looks stupid or kiddy or whatever" to be taken more seriously. Use words like that and i'm just going to disregard whatever you say as pure nonsense.
I fail to see anything wrong with the current kart designs they are implementing. To me they seem to add a certain personality to the drivers that the pedestrian go-karts in Mario Kart 64 didn't convey. Its not all that surprisingly that some people here would have a problem with driving a pink kart just like Luigi is seen doing in one of the screens. If you don't like it then fine, don't choose it then. No one is forcing you to.
I can tell you though it wouldn't bother me one bit. In fact I will probably choose that type of vehicle just because of all contraversy being generated right now. I have this tendency of liking what others wouldn't whether it be an indigo colored Gamecube or pop music (this is a biggie considering i'm a 20-year old male who should be listening to punk rock, heavy metal and other music of that type, but alas that just isn't the case).

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Kart Discussion (TALK ABOUT MARIO KART HERE)
« on: April 25, 2003, 12:41:04 PM »
Enough bickering about the polygon count (or lack thereof) already. When playing games like these you have to focus all your attention on what matters the most. The race. If you care more about whether the game has low-res textures, models and whatnot then trying to take corners at full speed or avoiding obstacles on the road your going to be left in the dust.

Also despite what anyone says you cannot mix photo-realism with cartoony visuals. The style has to be either one or the other. You cannot have both. In this case seeing as how Mario Kart is obviously a game that does not obide by the rules of realism there is no reason the visuals should have to follow suit. Spiffy effects like hi-res textures, bumpmapping, realtime lighting and volumetric fog are not needed. If you want to see those types of effects and more check out RSIII Rebel Strike to get your visual high.

Of course even in a graphical intensive game like that you probably will not get much opportunities to stop and take in the scenery unless your plain fooling around. As much as I wanted to admire the plethora of effects present in the Battle of Endor in Rogue Leader there was just too much going on to do that. Lets see on top of taking out those two Star Destroyers while avoiding there large batteries and numerous smaller turrets you also had to worry about the swarms of fighters zipping around trying to get a few shots up your rear all the while protecting your mothership Home One from getting pummeled by those tie-bombers (this last factor was what usually did me in). Whew.....I have to admit that one level had to be the most chaotic of them all and it really put your multi-tasking skills to the test.

24
Its deja vu all over again. A series of big announcements preceding E3 are being made just as was the case last year (which were the Square, Triforce, Sega/F-Zero and Namco/Star Fox announcements if anyone still recalls). Perhaps the biggest one we've had to date is the confirmation of a new Metal Gear title for the Gamecube. Than just recently Rogue Squadron III and Mario Kart were revealed to us for the very first time. Theres no doubt more are to come. Ah, I love this time of year so many juicy news bits to salivate over.

1. Yes, Doom I and II, Duke Nukem, Resident Evil 2 (on my bro's PSX), Command & Conquer, and Red Alert (I mention those last two because in the original C&C I recall two videos showing people being shot in the head, also on the battlefield you saw troops getting charred by flamethrowers, fried by obelisks and naplamed also, in Red Alert it was being electricuted by the tesla coils, torn apart by dogs etc.)
2. No, saw it as nothing more then mindless fun
3. I don't believe so, maybe if the kid had issues to begin with then they could be more influenced by a game's subject matter, Ex. not being able to seperate fantasy from reality
