TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Disney Epic Mickey
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:40:57 AM »
Disney’s most beloved mascot embarks on his darkest adventure yet.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23536

Disney Epic Mickey, designed by Deus Ex creator Warren Spector and developed by Junction Point, stars Mickey Mouse in an unexpected role.

As the story goes, Sorcerer Yen Sid (Fantasia) has created an universe called the Wasteland to house Disney’s forgotten efforts, which includes theme park attractions, movies, and characters. One day, Mickey Mouse accidentally spills paint thinner on the world, creating a dark world ruled by the Blot. Disney’s first creation, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, tries to destroy this threat, sending Mickey on a journey of redemption to correct his mistake.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Mickey has cartoon-inspired abilities, most prominently the ability to erase and paint elements into the game’s world. Using his paint brush, Mickey can "paint in" missing platforms to reach new places, or erase them to reveal new passages. Paint and paint thinner also plays heavily into the combat, allowing the player to both of them to attack enemies. Attacks are controlled with the Wii Remote, with players pointing at the screen and using either the paint or the paint thinner.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010: Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Epic Mickey features a gameplay style Warren Spector and Junction Point have described as “Playstyle Matters”. Decisions that players make affect the outcome of the story as well as the universe. The game also employs a mix of platforming, adventure, and light role-playing elements.  There are movie screens in each level, and Mickey can jump into them and explore levels based on Mickey’s classic shorts. At E3, a level based on Steamboat Willie was demoed. These levels serve double-duty as gateways through the worlds in Wasteland.

Players will also be able to collect over 75 virtual Disney pins by completing challenges and other tasks, and other collectibles can also be found.

Disney Epic Mickey will be released Holiday 2010.

 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23535

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light is the DS’ first original Final Fantasy title after several excellent 3D remakes have graced the platform.  It should come as no surprise that it is being developed by the same team behind the Final Fantasy III and IV remakes.

The 4 Heroes of Light tells the story of a small kingdom named Horne, and follows a young man named Brandt. On the morning of his 14th birthday, Brandt learns that he is considered an adult and thus must present himself to the king. When he arrives at the castle he learns that the king is distraught because the princess has been kidnapped by the Witch of the North. Brandt is then asked to rescue her, and embarks on his journey.

Battles utilize what is called the Action Point System, a simple command-based system that players of all types can easily learn and enjoy. Like in previous Final Fantasy titles, a job system is present, known as the Crown System. It features a dozen jobs that players can assign to their characters. Their magic and abilities can be changed at will, regardless of the job they have chosen. There is also a multiplayer mode for up to four players in which players can help each other out and conquer tough dungeons.

In terms of graphics, the game will be in full 3D with a storybook aesthetic.  It will feature character designs by Akihiko Yoshida, character designer for Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy XII.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light will be released on October 5, 2010.

Sonic returns in his most colorful adventure yet.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=23534

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

In addition to Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, Sonic will also be starring in a Wii and DS-exclusive title called Sonic Colors. The story behind Sonic Colors is that Dr. Eggman has built a great theme park orbiting around Sonic’s home planet; however, he has also kidnapped an alien race called the Wisps in order to harvest their energy and unleash a devious plan.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Based on recently released screens and trailers, Sonic Colors looks to play similarly to the daytime stages in Sonic Unleashed, including the blend of 2D and 3D gameplay capitalized by that title.

Sonic will be aided by the colorful Wisps, and each Wisp has a different color power. Sonic is able to absorb these powers and unleash them as he runs through the theme park stages. For example, the Yellow Drill allows Sonic to drill through the stages. The Cyan Laser gives Sonic the ability to run through the stage as a laser. When all of these powers are combined, Sonic’s boost gauge fills up quickly. Both the Wii and DS version will have their own exclusive Wisp.

Sonic Colors is set to be released on both the Wii and DS this holiday season.

TalkBack / Iwata Hopes 3DS Stimulates Games Sales
« on: June 25, 2010, 04:39:20 PM »
According to the Nintendo executive, poor video game software sales should be blamed on the quality rather than the poor economy.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23529

In an interview with VentureBeat, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata commented on poor video game software sales. According to him, the economic recession isn’t the real reason why video games are selling poorly. “I cannot say that the recession has no effect on the sales of video games,” Iwata stated.

Satoru Iwata Card

He elaborated that the lack of great software that everyone wants to buy is the issue, stating that “We have not shown off the great attractions of whatever we are selling. This is not the problem of Nintendo alone, but the entire video game industry.”

With this concern in mind, Iwata hopes that fresh video game concepts can stimulate stagnant game sales, using the recently unveiled 3DS as an example of this ideal. “In the past, the formula was to make the computer graphics more gorgeous. It used to fit the taste of the majority of the gaming audience, but it doesn’t work so well in this day and age. It’s more difficult for us to come up with something new and different and show people how different we are. The whole industry has to recognize that.”

Iwata wrapped up by saying that video game concepts that may have proven successful years ago aren’t guaranteed to sell well today, with innovation being a key player in this concept.  “Looking at the product line-ups this year, these titles might have been big hits three years ago. But now this year, they are not selling that much. In other words, people get tired of games more quickly than they did before. When you look at our 3D games concept, we recognize it will not be eternally appealing. However, it’s not a shallow concept that can be forgotten as a momentary fad.”

The unique features and third-party support of the 3DS looks to appeal to the hardcore.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23523

In an interview with Nikkei, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stressed that the Nintendo 3DS will appeal to the core gamers that might have abandoned Nintendo platforms. Iwata stated that Nintendo working very closely with developers in order to “expand into elaborate games targeting serious gamers.”

Iwata also noted that Nintendo is working very hard to incorporate developers’ requests for the Nintendo 3DS in order to make it the best handheld it can be, reasoning that such “partnerships are good for both Nintendo and software developers.”

While intimating that the Nintendo DS primarily catered to people who did not usually play games, he explained that the 3DS and its more advanced graphics and gameplay – as well as its burgeoning third-party support – will appeal to hardcore player as well.

The Nintendo 3DS is scheduled for release by March 31, 2011.

TalkBack / Nintendo DS Line Sees Huge Sales Boost in Japan
« on: June 25, 2010, 03:24:36 AM »
Thanks to a recent price cut, the Nintendo DS family sees its highest sales week in quite some time.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23521

The Nintendo DS has never received a price cut in Japan, and many were skeptical as to whether or not it would have an impact on Nintendo DS sales this week. Once again, Nintendo has proved those doubters wrong once again as the Nintendo DS line has seen a major sales boost in Japan thanks to the price cut.

In a distant second behind the massive Nintendo DS sales was the PSP, followed closely by the Wii. The PS3 and Wii continue to be neck-to-neck in Japan, with the Wii only edging Sony's console by 2,000 units this week.

The Xbox 360 sees a fall to just over 2,000 units for the week, but that is enough to put it ahead of the PS2 and PSPgo.

TalkBack / Iwata Dissatisfied with Nintendo's Online Efforts
« on: June 23, 2010, 12:22:01 PM »
Despite their beliefs in a strong offline offering, Iwata believes more can be done online.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23499

In a recent E3 Q&A session with analysts, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata expressed his discontent with Nintendo’s online efforts.

Iwata was quite candid in expressing a need for improvement. “I have heard commentary that people feel that Nintendo’s online functionality is behind the others or is lacking in some ways. And I can say that we are not currently satisfied with the online efforts that we have made so far, and we are working at ways to improve those.”

Regardless of the dissatisfaction with their online offerings, Iwata expressed that a strong offline experience is vital to the company. “On the other hand, I do not think that online functionality is something that we should be devoting resources to for every single product. Instead, I think that Nintendo’s ability to create an offline experience that feels incredibly unique and compelling is a particular strength that we have.”

Iwata then explained that Nintendo will evaluate their online services based on the product.  “Going forward, what we will continue to do is to evaluate the individual products and experience that we’re creating on a product-by-product basis, and make a decision as to whether or not it’s more important to devote resources to making that offline experience more fun and compelling for products where that is going to be the most important element of the game play; and then for products where it is going to be more important, to add online functionality and make that online functionality robust and compelling. We will continue to focus our efforts there when it’s appropriate, but it’s going to be a product-by-product decision.”

TalkBack / Pixar Worlds a Possibility for Future Kingdom Hearts Games
« on: June 23, 2010, 11:47:53 AM »
Tetsuya Nomura believes that Pixar worlds and characters could appear in future titles.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23497

In an E3 interview, Kingdom Hearts creator and character designer Tetsuya Nomura talked about the possibilities of future Kingdom Hearts games featuring Pixar-based worlds. “I am aware of the fan requests for Pixar characters,” said the Square Enix director. “I will do my best. Maybe one day Pixar characters will be featured in the Kingdom Hearts series.”

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Recently, Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded was announced for the DS. A remake of the cell phone game, Re: Coded has Sora and friends recollecting their lost memories and hoping to complete Jiminy Cricket's journal. A new Kingdom Hearts game for the recently unveiled Nintendo 3DS was also announced, and was confirmed to be a new game in the series.

In 2006, Pixar was bought by the Disney Company after struggling to reach a deal with their contract. Such recent successes include Cars, Wall-E, the Academy Award nominated Up, and Toy Story 3, which premiered last weekend and has already earned $109 million at the box office.

TalkBack / Famitsu Reveals Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded Details

The franchise's creator talks about new additions to the DS version.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23496

In an interview in this week’s Famitsu magazine, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura revealed some details about the recently announced DS title Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded.

a class="thickbox" rel="images" title="" href="/media/0/1/981.jpg">

As previously announced, Re: Coded will be a remake of the cell phone game released last year. The decision was made because most cell phones in North America aren’t capable of displaying the game, and the DS game would reach a bigger audience. In addition, due to the game’s analog control-free design the development team felt that the game was well-matched to the DS hardware.

The story featured in the cell phone version will also be present in the DS remake, although some scenes and dialogue will be slightly altered. The graphical presentation is touched up for the DS version as well. Originally the game was going to be ported directly with no changes, but thanks to the graphical capabilities of the DS some scenes were recreated in full 3D. Text-based scenes were recreated using 2D sprites, with Nomura using the DS title “The World Ends with You” as an example of a game using 2D graphics to tell its story.

Nomura further explained that the gameplay in Coded would include elements of Birth by Sleep and 358/2 Days. Nomura believes this combination will create a very unique gameplay experience. The gameplay is being supervised by the Co-Director of Birth by Sleep, along with the development team of that title working on the maps as well.  Famitsu then asked if the controls were inspired by 358/2 days, and Nomura explained that with Coded they wanted to reach more casual players.

Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded is nearing completion, with 80% of the game being done. Nomura promises that a release date will be announced soon, and that the wait won’t be as long as with Birth by Sleep.

TalkBack / 3DS Development Costs Similar to Wii
« on: June 23, 2010, 03:39:46 AM »
According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, 3DS development costs could be higher than those of the DS.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23494

In an E3 Q&A session, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata commented on the development costs of Nintendo 3DS games, explaining that costs could be higher than those of the DS.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

He attributed this extra cost to the system's additional graphics capabilities. "Because the visual capabilities of Nintendo 3DS are more powerful than the existing Nintendo DS, if you are going to take full advantage of the graphics capability of Nintendo 3DS, the development cost is…expected to rise,". In addition, he explained that "if developers decide to try and maximize the graphical powers of the system, then the cost would be more expensive than what it is currently for Nintendo DS and may potentially approach the cost of developing Wii software.”

For comparison, the development of a typical Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 game could cost up to 30 million dollars. Wii development costs are typically a third of that or less, and DS development costs even less.

In addition to the explanation of the development costs, Iwata explained to the panel of analysts that implementing the 3D effects requires very little effort on the developer’s behalf. "From a development perspective, it actually does not make much of a difference in terms of development costs to create the 3D visual effect."

Iwata concluded by stating that while development costs could be on par with the Wii, developers don’t need to invest that much monetary resources into the creation of a game. But he quickly stated afterwards that, "On the other hand, I believe there will be developers who will use a similar amount of resources to create games as if developing for a home console, and such games also would result in satisfaction to our consumers."

TalkBack / Iwata on the Creation of the 3DS
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:47:45 AM »
The Nintendo CEO talks about the beginnings of the 3D-enhanced handheld.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23481

In an interview with VentureBeat, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata talked about how the 3DS came to be. The interview traced the creation of the 3DS to the days of the Virtual Boy, an experiment Satoru Iwata claims "didn"t work that well".

The interview discussed the following:

  • The idea for a 3D gaming experience started ten years ago with the release of the Nintendo GameCube. At the time, 3D existed in the form of the parallax barrier. Nintendo experimented with the technology using LCD screens and the GameCube. The first game that used the technology was Luigi’s Mansion, with the results being very appealing, according to Iwata.
  •

  • The problem with this was that at the time LCD screens were expensive, and Nintendo realized that the console would already be a pricey purchase for the consumer.
  •

  • 3D gaming was also experimented with on the GameBoy Advance, with the 3D working via an adapter (Iwata claims to have the original prototype in his drawer). The final results were that the GameBoy Advance wasn’t powerful enough to warrant the technology.
  •

  • When designing the DS, the idea of 3D wasn’t brought back due to failed experiments.
  •

  • The basis of the 3DS started with re-designing the DS, and adding more graphical power to it. The idea of 3D was suggested once more, but was denied. Later on, the idea was accepted into the design. The opinion of the developers changed as soon as they saw the quality of the product.
  •

  • The success of James Cameron’s Avatar inspired Nintendo to begin work on the 3DS.
  •

  • The interviewer asked about the concerns players have about the 3DS’ “sweet spot”. To this, Iwata explained that the screen won’t see any changes. The team tested the sweet spot’s size and believed that it is acceptable at any angle.
  •

  • When asked about cost, Iwata refrained about talking about the 3DS’s final cost. However, he explained that the production costs were higher than those of the DS and hoped to not sell the system below its production cost.
  •

  • The interview ends with the interviewer asking Iwata if there will be 3D TVs that require no glasses. While Iwata believes that someone will eventually invent a glasses-free 3D TV, he has no idea when that will happen.
  •

TalkBack / Fils-Aime: Young Children Should Avoid Playing in 3D
« on: June 21, 2010, 01:00:40 PM »
The youngest of its fans should probably avoid playing in 3D, according to Reggie Fils-Aime.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23468

Speaking to Kotaku, Reggie Fils-Aime has stated that while playing the Nintendo 3DS does not present any health issues, children under the age of seven should probably avoid playing in 3D.

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Fils-Aime was quite clear on the matter.  "We will recommend that very young children not look at 3D images. That's because, [in] young children, the muscles for the eyes are not fully formed...This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol. We have the same type of messaging for the Virtual Boy, as an example."

The Nintendo 3DS is due for release by March 2011.

The first Nintendogs title was a huge success for Nintendo, helping sell DS units across the globe, using the DS's technology to great effect. Nintendogs + Cats aims to do this once again for the 3DS.

As the title implies, the sequel will feature cats as well as various breeds of dogs. Like in the original title, you can keep up to three pets at a time. Using the 3D technology, players can interact with their pets in a unique manner. The 3DS cameras allow it so that your cat or dog can recognize your face and interact with it, even licking your face if you move in closer. Playing Frisbee and ball with your dog is aided by the added dimension, creating a compelling effect. You can take your dog on a walk like in the previous title, and it will feature an enhanced version of the bark mode thanks to the 3DS's updated wireless communication abilities.  Finally, the graphics have been improved, with the dogs looking more realistically thanks to the fur shading used.

A date for Nintendogs + Cats wasn’t given, but it is expected to be released at or near the 3DS's launch.

"It's an exciting time and you could possibly have two handhelds coming out within months or a year of each other," he said.

"Sony tried to make the transition with PSPgo, I think that changed some consumers' attitudes, but they need to come back with something on PSP pretty quickly to stay in the game because Nintendo are **** hot at getting these things right,” he explained in the interview. “And they always get these things right."
