Title: Backlaugust 2020 - Primed and Ready to clear some backlogs.
Post by: pokepal148 on August 01, 2020, 02:22:13 AM
Backlaugust: The Official Negative World Nintendo World Report Month for Decimating Backlogs!™ is back again for more action! So start looking through your backlog and get started!

Here are the "rules":

Games can be on any system, not just Nintendo systems. I know we're a Nintendo fan site, but most everyone here is a multi-console owner. So play a game on any system you want.

Let us know what you're playing. Mostly just so we can cheer each other on.

Play games you already own. A lot of people tend to buy a game then not play it, or play it for a significant amount of time and then put it down. This is what we're aiming for. Games that launch in August don't count.

Try to pick up games you aren't actively playing right now. Games you're currently playing can be allowed, but in the spirit of Backlaugust, let's try to make them games you aren't playing at the moment. Make it a game you haven't touched in a month or more if possible.

When is a game done? That's up to you! Mark a game off your backlog when you've seen the ending or end credits, or once you've seen enough of the game in a game without a "proper ending" (like an arcade-type game). You don't have to do or get everything unless you want to.

Finished games will be posted in the OP. Because everyone likes to see their accomplishments recognized. Just post when you're done and I'll try to update daily.

It appears that some loser named Pokepal148 has stolen my totally 100% original idea and run some kind of knock off version of Backlaugust on Negative World. (http://www.negativeworld.org/boardreplies.php?id=14500&pagenumber=1) (you have to have an account there to view the Negative World Thread unfortunately.) Let's try to complete more games than those folks in Negative World. This also means that myself, Mop it Up and Guillaume on the NWR staff will be unable to contribute to either side since we are active in both communities. Instead, anything we complete will be counted as a bonus for the totals on both sides.

I picked up Rune Factory 4 again for this and I'm trying to get my bearings. I know kind of what to do for the main quest but I need to relearn the farming and crafting systems for the game.

Ever Oasis is another one I want to knock off. It's a really fun game and I believe I'm very close to the final boss.

As far as RPGs go I'm going to go with Persona 3 Portable. I wanna say I'm in October for that game so I still have a few more ingame months to go.

And Saints Row 3 is another one I wanna get through. It's a really fun game and I need to finish it.

I wanna play! I’ll play. **** what’s even on my backloggery? I need to update that too! I’m unemployed and the pandemic should hit my town eventually so it seems like a good time for back logging.

Ok time to get organised and also, ambitious. I'll list my plugged in consoles and what I can return to playing to put them to bed.

Switch

Macintosh
WiiU

Super Nintendo Entertainment System
3DS
I have updated my backloggery https://backloggery.com/RABicle
I will also update this post as games are completed and provide near constant updates with posts in the thread.

Ever Oasis absolutely needs to be played. it is so good.

Not counting new games that are in a queue to be played, I have been wanting to play through the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild for over a year now. I have decided that when I finish Xenoblade Definitive Edition, Im going to start it. Im nearly done with Xenoblade, so I should be able to start BotW soon.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles X - The big one. I don't know how far I have to go but I've unlocked all the map. I need to just grit my teeth and push through. Haven't picked it up in years. Going to be so lost. Please send help.

Save it for later. After playing XC:DE and understanding the XC series principles and fundamentals, I really do want to get back to XCX although I'm leaning towards just starting over as I had only gotten to Chapter 4 and the second jungle continent. I just don't want to play a game of XCX's size and length after going through XC and still finishing up the extra story content. But I've pretty much scheduled this in my mind to play in late November/December as holidays from work will give me the opportunity to really dig in and play it constantly it for awhile thus getting through a big chunk of the game this way. Wait until then and we can post/discuss it at that time.

It appears that some loser named Pokepal148 has stolen my totally 100% original idea and run some kind of knock off version of Backlaugust on Negative World. (http://www.negativeworld.org/boardreplies.php?id=14500&pagenumber=1)

Clicking on that link just sends me to a page that says No Access. When clicking on the forums of Negative World, I see no forum topic about this. (Also, Negative World is an odd choice to use for a name. I get the video game relevance but it just gives the impression that everyone is going to be pessimistic or a downer on every subject. Also just one letter off from also being NWR.)

I have Earthbound on my 3DS, maybe like half way through and it's been like that for a good 4 years I would guess. So I'm going to go and finish that.

I have bought a bunch of MGS games and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been holding that up for about 6 months now.

I have had Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on like 80% complete for about 6 months and I've had the trilogy since it came out 5 years ago.

I guess I "beat" Where the Goats are.
jfc.

Also I may've underestimated the grind of World of Tennis. Right now 'm not sure I will beat the final league before the end of the month.

I'm almost done Luigi's Mansion 3, just a few more hours, I hope, from the end.

I also have Undertale on Switch along with a few other games, but I'll only commit to playing those for now.  If I really had the time, I'd finally fire up that PS3 I got back on Black Friday 2011, and clear that out.

So I've started Ever Oasis, seems fun. I wonder how long the game would be without all the talking though. I should be able to push through it by the end of the month with regular play sessions in the evenings.

Hitup Rayman Legends again, I'm really close to the end but there's going to be a bit of a grind to unlock the final set of levels. I have some thoughts on this game, on paper it should be an excellent 10/10 release but it falls flat somehow. Anyway some regular sessions as breaks between my study should get me through in a couple of weeks.
UPDATE: it is beaten.

After doing some research, I'm not sure it will be possible to beat Ring Fit Adventure this month. I didn't realise the game had so many levels and due to the nature of the game, and my desire to play it properly and not hurt myself, I don't think it's possible to finish it this month. I'm going to keep it in my list though to get myself into the habit of playing it regularly and I'll just chalk up what World I'm up to at the end of the month to mark my progress.

Terranigma, Disco Elysium and Xenoblade X are going to be the big three that will require some extended playsessions to lock myself away for.

A real danger is the possibility of getting addicted to Dragon Quest Builders 2 again. It's done now, playing it onyl takes away time form otehr games in this list but building stuff is fun and there's all kinda of cool chalenges to do. I will try to abstain for now. Maybe we can do Completember or something next month.

Also Lemonade should credit his clearing of XB:DE towards his month.

I've decided to join in with this. At least to start I think I'll go with three games, and maybe add some more if I make good progress with those.

My first three games:

Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - I really love this game but I keep drifting away from it for whatever reason.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening HD - I never seem to finish Zelda games, but I'm going to put my foot down and do it with this one.

Metroid: Samus Returns - I never finished this because I had no desire to play my 3DS much instead of my shiny new Switch, but it's great.

The final one, that you battle in your car and upgrade your abilities during the fight and the controls ahve changed for some reason. It's not bad in that it's hard, it's bad in that it's absolute trash.

Speaking of annoying final bosses, I randomly re-picked up and cleared Wario Land 1 on 3DS Virtual Console. Now Wario can enjoy happily living in a tree stump.

That part was a little weird, but then again so's the whole game. I thought it kinda made sense given the events of the chapter, and I didn't find anything bad about it. To each their own I s'pose.

So I'm liking this a lot, having a specific goal like this is really helping me here. Pokepal picked an excellent idea to plagiarize, and I'd go as far as to say that this is the second best thing Nintendo World Report has ever stolen from Negative World. I'd also like to officially add Mass Effect to my in progress list.

I started BotW last night. Im glad I finally have time to play it.

I kind of forgot how tough the game is at the start. I have already died a bunch of times. Thankfully the checkpoint system is very good, so you dont really lose any progress.

Im trying to do things differently this time. Instead of jumping off the north side of the plateau, as the game suggests, I went south. I activated a tower, went over to another one, but I didnt have enough stamina to climb it.

I streamed it too, so here is the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGsWXi5nlPg
Except I just noticed something seems to have gone wrong with the archive, and it has lost the first half an hour or so

Will participate in this too when I get a bit more time later in the month. Most of my backlogs is RPGs right now (EarthBound, Xenoblade, Pokémon Silver) so I might cheat and pick something from the Switch SNES library instead.

Wow, you guys have formatting buttons?? I feel like I just walked into the house of the kid who always makes us take their shoes off.

You're the only one here complimenting the forums' features recently PogueSquad. ;D
You should play Shovel Knight Cards King, it's a really fun expansion, one of my faves. Plays kinda like Wario Land, and it's not too long if you skip the card battles.

I'm actually kind of of the opinion that King Of Cards is fun enough...but I would've rathered that Yacht Club have spent their time on something else over the past 5 years. I kind of would've rathered that they phoned in some extra campaigns and then put heir efforts into a new thing. I get they they want to fulfill their Kickstarter goals, but it's time to just move on already.

And in regards to Wario Land...I loved Wario Land! I thought the first one was so good, and I might be in the minority that I thought it was the best one. I thought the second game lost so much without th world map. I loved revisiting levels in the first game when the tide was low, or when something affected the levels in a unique way. I feel like the only other game to really do that was DKC Tropical Freeze. The first game capitalized on all the reasons I loved Super Mario World, to be honest!

More and more people ahve been pulling me aside wanting to know how I'm going and what it's like going 4 days without seeing a credits reel. Gotta say, it's been hard. I'm really thinking of giving World of Tennis the flick, it's progression through the leagues makes so sense to me. I've been stuck in 'elite II' for ages now. I think I'm beginning to hate the game too.
For now though, I will endure, because the game I'm pairing it with, Ever Oasis, keeps getting better. I'm 17 hours in and expect to finsih in the next 6 or so. Great game. Should beat it before that slacker Pokepal who didn't even include my beating of Rayman on the 5th in his update.

Ok, I'm now on the desert divine beast, which is the first one I'm doing. The Wii U says I played it for a bit over 5 hours today. I made about as much progress as I was hoping.

The game is slower paced than I remember and it is very easy to get distracted with exploration or other things.

I had a bit of trouble with the Yiga Clan Hideout, I got spotted a bunch of times. You really have to do it without being seen at all because the enemies in there are very strong.

I'm not sure if I'm going to leave the divine beast and try to find some armor first. I'm still with the starting clothes.

The amiibo are very useful for getting supplies and decent weapons.

Speaking of Shovel Knight, I have it on Wii U, but haven't played it since before any of the DLC. I didn't like the game very much because I was bad at it. I didn't make very much progress.

Well, the desert divine beast is considered the "hardest" of the divine beasts because of the quests/progression you have to go through to get it. I also think it is the hardest boss on the dungeons but then it was the first one I played also and I just didn't have the fighting skill or armor attributes that I did by they time I got to some of the others. Still, it can be done. It just might take more time. I really did like the Gerudo region so it was disappointing later to find out that the other beasts didn't always have the same build-up to conquer them.

tfw I can't remember any of the divine beasts other than that sometimes they were laugho easy and othertimes excruciatingly hard.

Also, I beat Ever Oasis today.

UPDATE: Updating this post instead of replying to the thread again, I have updated my first post, adding Chase: Cold Case Investigations ~Distant Memories~, BoxBoxBoy, and The Starship Damrey to my list of games to finish off. Just to make things hard on our diligent thread updater.

I guess one might as well use this thread as a temporary "What was the last game you beat?" location. Wrapped up Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition over the weekend by finishing up the Extra Story content. So that is done and dusted from my backlog. And tonight I beat Yoshi's New Island for 3DS. Just have 3 extra/bonus levels to complete. So, rack up another couple for NWR.

Sounds like you're trying to compete with me! I know it's not a competition, but I'm winning!

But for real just announce your intentions to clear off some other games here in this thread. Join the fun!

As for my progress, today I officially retire from World of Tennis. I was promoted to teh Elite III league and my elo ranking has now passed 2000 but I don't want anything more to do with this game. I think tehplayer skill cap tops out at level 20 and I'm level 17 so I mean, it's basically beaten right?

I've also started up BoxBoxBoy! to find that I already had a file with the first few world beaten. I am now up to World 7.

UPDATE: OH MY GOD I BOOTED UP BOXBOY + BOXGIRL AND FOUND I MY SAVE PROGRESS WAS RIGHT BEFORE THE LAST WORLD OF LEVELS! I HAVE NOW BEATEN THAT! YOU GUYS WILL NEVER CATCH ME!

BotW update. I got up to the boss of the desert Divine Beast and it is INCREDIBLY ANNOYING. I tried many times, but it kills me too easily. I'm leaving it for now and will come back to it when I have more hearts, right now I only have 5 of them.

I think for a while now I will just explore the map, heading north towards and bird people and look for shrines.

I think for a while now I will just explore the map, heading north towards and bird people and look for shrines.

I am re-playing on hero mode and got stuck at the same boss. If you think it is annoying now imagine it regaining health while you are trying to defeat it.

I am now right at the boss door in Maridia in Super Metroid. I probably spent like two hours stuck in Maridia in the Wii U Virtual Console version but here I kind of just bumbled my way into progress almost immediately.

Alright, you've had your chance. My assignment is submitted, rent inspection passed. There was a trip to Bunbury for a houseparty becuase we don't have any (significant) restrictions anymore and I'll be back on the games tomorrow. And I will finish a game tomorrow, and Tuesday and... hell I'll beat a game every day this week. It's going to be unprecedented. More and more people will talking about how incredible ability to finsih games, they may even call me the finisher.

BotW update. The flying Divine Beast has now been completed. The boss for that one was much easier.
A few more towers have been activated. I think I will try to do more shrines and before doing the volcano Divine Beast, but thats the direction Im going next.

Having the Haduken helps so much with the Sigma fight.  It OHKOs his dog and all you really have to do at the beginning of the fight is stand there and do the input, iirc.

Started my (nuzlocke) run of Pokémon SoulSilver, I'm unreasonably miffed how they redesigned the player's house. They've added an extra rival character too. Wild how much I remember from this game, still. Picked Chikorita of course.
Almost lost my Lvl 2 Rattata to poison, but I guess there's a chance poison wears off now whilst walking around? Got lucky there.

So, I completed Yoshi's New Island last week. Beat the bonus levels and collected all the doo-dads and unlocked everything. And yesterday I finished off Kirby's Star Stacker from my 3DS VC. I beat all the Round Clear levels and unlocked the Insane level for Challenge and Time Attack to give Kirby a crown on the title screen. Set the high scores for those modes as well.

That makes 3 games now for this month: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Yoshi's New Island and Kirby's Star Stacker. Not sure why pokepal148 hasn't included them in the NWR section. Perhaps I need to pull a Lindy and edit in my stats to the OP as well. I'm about the only person here who's mounting any kind of challenge to RABicle's run so I will not be denied pokepal!!!

I started it back in 2017 and just got to Twoson but never got back to it. I've had it hanging around on my Backlog now playing page because I've always meant to get back to it and cross it off my list but just haven't. Considering I've finally played and beat Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles for the first time this year, I should get back and finish Earthbound to make this my year of iconic RPGs.

Lol! Well, first, let me say wow to your new custom title. As for Yoshi's New Island, meh is about right.

I seem to be one of the few people that was pretty positive on Yoshi's Island DS based on what I recall of what other users posted about it back in the day when it came out. My biggest complaints against that game were that sometimes the levels went on way too long (but even the original SMW2 can have that feeling too) and it didn't have item cards like the original. With item cards, you could give yourself more stars which could be useful like if you are fighting a boss and drop Baby Mario for a moment. Don't have to replay the whole level over again to get a perfect score. YIDS required you to play it over again making it much tougher than the original in that regard. I felt the different baby abilities helped give it enough of a hook to make it feel like a pretty good mix of new and old even if it did feature a lot of what came before.

So, from that experience, even though I knew YNI had gotten pretty average and middling reviews / scores, I wasn't discouraged by that since YIDS sort of had the same reception. But in this case, the reviews and feelings matched mine as well and if people thought YIDS didn't do much to get out of SMW2's shadow then YNI may help change their minds with how much it rehashes the original game.

I mentioned before that I was playing SMW2 on the SNES online and then realized I could be playing New Island instead of the same old. The developers of New Island probably didn't expect anyone to be playing these games at the same time when making it but, since I was, it just showed me how much they copied the original. Yes, the levels are new but the same concepts are copied over and hit at the exact same time. Nep-Enuts show up at 3-2 in SMW2. They show up at 3-2 in New Island. ShyGuys on stilts show up at 1-6 in SMW2 and they show up at the same point in New Island. Wall Lakitus show in 2-7 in SMW2 and New Island does its spin on them at the same spot.

Now, not everything is copied over. For instance, with how things were going early on, I was expecting the Baseball Boys to show up early in World 2 but they never even make an appearance in the game. Nor will you touch fuzzy and get dizzy in New Island. The main addition this game makes are the giant eggs which pop up for a brief appearance here and there. However, due to how they work and what they can do, they're limited in their usage and s-egg-regated to a small portion of a level so their effect on the game is fleeting and hardly game-changing.

The story starts off where the original ends with Mario and Luigi being dropped off to their parents only for it to turn out the stork has gone to the wrong house. That felt like a bold beginning but it just leads to the stork being attacked again by Kamek and the exact premise plays out again as it did in the original of working to reunite Mario with Luigi and Kamek trying to get the baby. Despite it being a new island, it sure seems a lot like the old. Even the ending when confronting Bowser is pretty much the same. Baby Bowser wakes from a nap, stomps on Kamek and wants to ride on the donkey. They couldn't even develop a new confrontation there. Baby Bowser is still scribbling on the wall with his crayons as shown by the background. Even with something as minor as this, they couldn't come up with anything new? Just repeat it all again?

Adding gyro controls during the Yoshi transformations seemed like a desperate attempt to make them a bit of a different and pretend that they'll be more fun but it just makes them all seem very similar instead. And yet, (AND YET), I won't completely write off the game as near the end around the latter part of World 5 and into World 6, the game did seem to finally start justifying its existence with the levels being a bit more difficult and engaging. The bonus levels also showed that there could be more done still with the mechanics of a Yoshi platformer and some creativity from the developer. Although designed to be quite challenging, they were tough but not Galaxy 2 - Perfect Run or 3D World - Champion's Road tough. While this game also didn't have any kind of item cards or inventory which could help you complete the level with a perfect score like SMW2, it at least divided the needed inventory of flowers / red coins / and stars into their own sections. This means that if you collected all the coins and stars in a level but missed a flower then stars and coins were checked off as complete and all you had to do was replay the level and collect all the flowers on the second go around to complete that aspect and not all the red coins and stars as well. It's a bit of a compromise between the original and Yoshi's Island DS but it did allow me to speed through a bit on some of the level replays I had to do to get some item I missed or was short on the first time.

There's more I could breakdown about the game but I think this is enough typing and paints a pretty clear picture about the experience. I'll just close by saying that after playing the long and expansive Xenoblade Chronicles, I was looking for a smaller and simpler experience. Something I felt I could probably get through in about a week and this pretty much fit what I was looking for and in the mood for. It's probably why I started replaying Yoshi's Island on the Switch Online app in the first place. Just check in and chip away at a few levels to make some progress in short gaming bursts here and there. It filled that role well. If you don't mind redundant feeling platformers and want something that can be finished off pretty quickly then this might be the game for you. Also, I did like the backgrounds. I think they're painterly quality was a bit more pleasing than the crayon coloring book backgrounds of the original.

I have beaten Pullblox aka Pushmo.

My stats are.
Beaten: 10
Retired: 1
Currently playing: 5

With 10 days to go, realisticially of those six I expect to finish 3. Little Red Lie should just be a matter of sitting down and ploughing through the back half of the game or so. A couple of binge days should see me through two of Terranigma, Disco Elysium, and Xenoblade X, but liekly not all three. If I was to guess Xenoblade wont make it. Ring Fit Adventure wont be finished, maybe not for the whole year with the terribly slow progress I'm making. :(

I will likely add another 3DS game or two to the games to play since I'm making such amazing progress with those. Maybe Luigi's Mansion 2 or Hydroventure Spincycle.

No it's the real version but because I am very bad at video games I'm not going to start over on that one and instead will continue to slog through this file that took me 9 hours to reach Ridley.

Maybe one day I'll learn to play it properly and play it on the SNES Mini or Switch.

Beat it today, sans Haduken (I should go back in and get it). I hate how the passwords that you get at the end merely start you at the beginning of the Sigma stages, rather than after each end boss. Forces you to sit down and set aside several hours to make a full run.  Sigma isn't that difficult...it's more that you're so fatigued by the time you get to him that you start messing up timings. I took a break, had dinner, rested up, came back and took him down.

Overall I love Mega Man X, but **** that game.

Alright I can finally join in.  So I spend the second half of July playing Bloodstained: Cursed of the Moon 2 and after I had finally completed every episode and got every ending, I felt like replaying all the Classic Castlevania's.  So I've spent this month playing the Castlevania Anniversary Collection on Switch.  Most of the games on the collection I've already beaten either years ago on the Wii Virtual Console or stuff like Bloodlines and Kid Dracula which I did last year when I first bought the collection.  But this time I played and beat every game on the collection including the ones I hadn't beaten before.  So I can cross 3 games off my backlog now.

Castlevania II: Simons Quest - This was actually the first Castlevania I ever played when I rented the game as a kid.  Didn't get far since I had no idea where to go.  Over the years I've seen enough Youtube video's talking about all the BS in the game, it's made me drag my feet.  Well I finally played the whole thing this month and you know, it wasn't that bad.  It helps that the most obtuse parts of the game have become so well known, there was only one part I ended up using a guide to find, but the rest went pretty smooth.  Even replayed it and got the best ending my second time, so I found some enjoyment in it.

Castlevania: The Adventure - I played this one for a little bit last year on the collection but stopped because it's just not fun to play.  I actually bought this game for the original GB back in the late 2000's and played on the Gamecube GBA player and stopped playing after a little while back then as well.  Seriously, this game is just a slog to play because your character moves so slow and you hardly move when you jump forward, which requires literally every jump in the game to be a pixel perfect jump.  The game also has really bad hit-box detection so you take a lot of cheap hits from things that sometimes look like they shouldn't have hit you.  I actually forced my self to finish it this time.

This is the one game in the collection I ended up using save-states to beat though since the last level had so much cheap BS that I just wanted to be done with this shitty game.  Yeah some might consider that not legit but when the game is terrible, I don't care.

Castelvania II: Belmonts Revenge - I had never played game before since I wanted to beat the first GB Castlevania before moving on to this one.  Well now that the first game was out of the way I could finally try the sequel out and damn, this game is awesome.  The developers literally fixed every issue The Adventure had and delivered some of the most creative level design in a Classic Castlevania.

The rest of the games on the collection I'll probably write up my thoughts in the "Last game you beat section" since I've already beaten them in the past so they wouldn't count as a backlog.  Of course since I was in the Classic Castlevania mood, after finishing the Anniversay Collection, I hooked my Wii U back up so I could play Rondo of Blood again.  After finishing Rondo of Blood, it caused me to finally play the SNES version of Rondo, which is just called Dracula X.  I went and bought it off the Wii U's eshop so I could finally experience this version of the game.  Played it for over 7 hours and beat it 3 different times and got each ending.

But technically Dracula X wouldn't count for this thread since I bought it new in order to finish my Classic Castlevania fest.  But I'd like to say it was always in my mental backlog since I planned on playing the game someday, but just never owned it yet. :D

Ugh. I'd have beaten Super Paper Mario today if I hadn't lost 3 times in the Pit of 100 Trials. Lost twice in the 90s like 92 and 93 and once in the 70s around 73. It was the third time I had to complete the pit but I guess my time away from the game made me rusty. But it was also stupidity on my part of trying to hoard my items before the boss even though I'd have been fine using one or two at those points to keep my health up considering how the confrontation went once I reached Shadoo. Oh well. At least that's over with. At Chapter 8-4 and think I'm pretty close to the Bleck showdown so guess I'll just have to wrap it up tomorrow.

I beat Retro City Rampage DX which I didn't intend to add to my playlist but I just kept playing and beat it. And then something terrible happened; I updated my Backloggery account, saw that Grubdog had posted a new article on Pietriots via the RSS feed on my account and in that article he mentoined GRID Autosport was on sale. Before I knew what I was doing, I had bought GRID Autosport, 198X and Katamari Demacy Reroll. Now I'm going to feel obliged to play some of these games which will remove time from my time available to conquer the backlog.

Anyway. Gues I need to update my original post now. I will play Terranigma this evening.

Relax. It's not life-critical. Besides, it's obvious at this point that NWR will have curbstomped NW in how many games were finished. Poor guys. Although it has almost been a case of both NWR and NW versus RABicle. If it wasn't for me adding to the total, RAB's totals vs everyone else from both NWR and NW would be greater than those combined numbers. I may not be posting as much these days but at least I'm playing and finishing more games. Where's the combined might of the NWR Userbase? Everyone should be isolating which means only playing games at home now. That's how you beat Covid and how you beat every other community that dares challenge our gaming prowess.

Throw another one on the board for me. Pushmo World is now complete. All puzzles solved, all Miiverse Stamps acquired. Can't wait to post them all and show off my puzzle-solving prowess.  :'(

I just had three puzzles to solve and they were the last three puzzles all at 5 star difficulty. It definitely took some time for me to work out. That last one was over an hour and I was just not seeing how to crack it for the longest time. Finally stumbled into it by process of elimination in trying so all the ways I could move it. I knew where the key was because I could figure out a lot of the end steps but that initial set-up just eluded me for so long. But it's over and I've now fully completed all games in the Pushmo series. Maybe we'll see a new entry for Switch in the next Direct. Nintendo is going to release one more game this year..... aren't they?  :o

I’m a bit late to the party but I figured I’d throw out that I have been replaying Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, and Skyward Sword. Admittedly, I’ve beaten all of these before but I’m replaying to get footage for NWR. I don’t think that really fits in with the rules of a backlog but I thought I’d at least share. I have finished both of the Mario RPG’s and I’m about halfway through Skyward Sword at this point.

Also I've been building Labo parts and playing Grid and Katamari and still haven't even touched Xenoblade X, Disco Elysium, Terranigma, Luigi's Mansion 2 or Starfox. Things are looking grim for RABicle!
I think I'll save up for a big finish on the Monday though. I jsut know there's people greedily eyeing the total and planning a last minute snipe of my high score. Just look at Morningshark waltzing in with 3 games to post! I'm watching you all! Khush is also making me sweat what with ploughing through Pullblox World. I was exhausted playing the back half of that one and even used a few skips.

Yeah RAB is the real MVP here lol. I'm about a third into Pokémon SoulSilver. Lost my starter in a dumb move so now I'm saddled with a Skiploom as my grass type which is not ideal, since I also traded my Bellsprout for an Onix. The later games hand you the Exp. Share early on, but that's not the case here and I could really use one.

I did finish the first Super Mario Bros. game on Switch Online, too, but that's not really my backlog so it'd be unfair to count it I think.

I'm not sure a game you just bought in August would count. You're wasting time with Grid and now you're running out of time :evil; It doesn't actually matter to me if you beat Grid and count it this month.

Lol! Paranoia is setting in. He's about to self-destruct! Now's our chance to take the lead in finishing games! I just went through the thread. You have 13 games you declared as beat and 1 that you retired from giving you 14. Someone waltzing in like Luigi Dude or Morningstar with 3 or 2 games done isn't even a quarter of your total. The only person you have to worry about at this point is me just like everyone else on these forums. My current total is 6 almost at 50% of yours.

Khush is also making me sweat what with ploughing through Pullblox World. I was exhausted playing the back half of that one and even used a few skips.

Ah, looks like RAB does know where the real danger is. While I'd like to take credit as some kind of master Pushmo demolisher, it's not like I went through the whole game in a week. I'd been chipping away at it back when I was playing Super Paper Mario in May before XC:DE came and I spent all my gaming time on it. Now that I've booted my Wii U back up to finish SPM, I got back into it as well. Just had 19 of the bonus puzzles to finish.

But while I haven't wanted to commit to anything in particular, I will reveal my next few goals. I've been playing a Switch indie game called A Case of Distrust. Doing my best to be a detective and solve the mystery. Making some progress but not sure how far along I'm in. Maybe I'm getting close to the end, maybe I've got more to do. Haven't had that Phoenix Wright moment yet of knowing who the murderer is and being primed to start breaking them down with evidence. Still collecting evidence.

I'm also going to go back to Kirby's 30th Anniversary Collection. I dropped off playing it around December or January. I was near the end of Kirby's Adventure and halfway through Kirby's Dream Land 2 so I think I'll clear those off. After that, not sure where I might go next but I've got some ideas like Balloon Kid in my GB VC collection or Toki Tori 3D which I also booted up to try out a few days ago. But I think I should be able to hit the double digit mark also this month.

Like Steefosaurus, I don't really consider the NES or SNES Switch Online games as part of my backlog. They're just convenient ways of playing stuff already in my library without having to set-up the old hardware. Otherwise, I'd probably zoom through a bunch on games on it like DKC, SMW2:YI, or Kirby Super Star to catch up on RAB. So, my slow start to get involved in this while RAB was racking up finishes should seal the deal for him. But I'll see if I can't keep it competitive yet.  ;D

Well, I have now finished A Case of Distrust so that is another one down.

Kirby's Adventure is now beat as well. Thank goodness. Probably my least favorite Kirby game. First time I've beaten the NES game. I've played and beaten the GBA remake before. Still, this should help get RAB sweating a bit more now.  8)

BotW update. Just if finished the volcano divine beast. Definitely the easiest one so far.

Next, I will head to the Zora divine beast, then I will have to go back and defeat the boss of the desert one.
I have made some progress on shrines, but I don't have enough hearts to get the master sword yet, although I have trekked through the forest to find it.

The Wii U play log says I have put a bit over 25 hours into BotW so far. That's a lot more than I was expecting.
I'm hoping to get the game finished the game finished this weekend.

Alright people. So, I'm at world 7 in Kirby's Dream Land 2. I fully expect to be posting later tonight of finishing that game. Was hoping to do that last night but just didn't have enough time. That will put me at 9 games. I feel pretty sure that I can have Toki Tori 3D beat by Aug. 31. That would put me at 10 games. What else can I do to maybe catch or pass RAB? With this final weekend, I can spend a lot of time tonight, tomorrow and Sunday to make a big push.

I've got Balloon Kid for GB VC. I'm hoping it could be a quicker title to play. There's Kirby's Dream Land 3 on the Kirby 20th Anniversary Collection that could doable. Is Ducktales Remastered on Wii U a long game? Hmmm. I do have a bunch of Just Dance titles I could get through. But is my body ready? Runner 3, Bomberman R, World of Goo, Katamari Damacy Reroll? Would any of those be possible in a short time frame?

Lol!! Congrats! Well done.

Kirby's Dream Land 2. I fully expect to be posting later tonight of finishing that game.

Allow me to shame myself by doing poorly in a Kirby game. I've saved the game at the Final boss encounter but I have yet to beat Dark Matter. It took longer than expected to get some of the Rainbow Drop pieces to unlock that boss and then I went through a period of just sucking against King Dedede. Finally got through him to fight Dark Matter. The first time it took me awhile to figure out how to injure DM and then I lost. The second time I was rocking and got to the second form which I then wasn't sure what to do (and still not quite certain) and lost but got so close to taking that second form down. It had three little bars left. I guess that did something to me because in my next couple encounters, I stunk it up but getting injured a bunch in the first form to hardly give myself a chance in the second form. I think fatigue set in. I feel ready for bed even as I type this. So, hopefully I can finish this quickly in the morning. Also made some more good progress with Toki Tori so that's still on track for finishing this month.

I seem to be one of the few people that was pretty positive on Yoshi's Island DS based on what I recall of what other users posted about it back in the day when it came out.
I also liked Yoshi's Island DS well enough. It's been a long time since I played it so I don't remember it very much right now; I should give it another go sometime. I do know that I did like the different abilities like you mentioned, and the level design was mostly decent, with the game trying a number of new ideas instead of just sticking with the stuff the original did.

Unfortunately I can't say the same for Yoshi's NEW Island, you seemed to like that one more than I did. I definitely consider it one of the worst 3DS games I've played. Like you say, it's just too derivative of the first game, except I felt it's all done in a worse fashion. Level design, visuals, music, all worse, while at the same time not really offering much new. The new stuff is pretty gimmicky like you say. With that said, I wouldn't say the game is necessarily bad, just utterly mediocre. But the thing about that is, sometimes those are the worst games of all. Games with absolutely nothing noteworthy, that they aren't remarkable or memorable in any discernible way, good or bad, giving not much to really say or think about.

The graphics are actually one of the things I didn't like about Yoshi's NEW island, particularly when it comes to the characters. It has a weird mishmash of having 3D characters (or are they pre-rendered 3D? Can't remember) with 2D environments that just didn't work for me, with the characters in particular just looking ugly and having jerky, awkward animation. I especially don't like the look of Yoshi and his missing legs; I'm aware that Yoshi doesn't have visible legs in the original Yoshi's Island which I've always thought was strange there as well, but it at least fits in better with the style of that game, and was probably partially done to work around system limitations. I s'pose you mentioned the backgrounds though, those were probably okay.

I never go for 100% in these games though, so I didn't try to do that with any of these Yoshi's Island games. And now I can cross off this post from my posting backlogue.

At this point, it is now functinoally impossible for me to finish many of teh games on my list. Tomorrow I will focus on Detention, Little Red Lie and Starfox Zero

More and more people have been pulling me aside wanting to know how I'm doing and what it's like going 2 days without seeing a credits reel. Gotta say, it's been hard. ;) But fortunately I was able to correct that this morning by beating Dark Matter in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Dark Matter definitely earned its rank as Final Boss. I really enjoyed my time with KDL2. That's the first time I've ever beat or played through it. Of the Game Boy games I've now played, it's easily in the Top 5. In fact, going by the chronological release history of Kirby games, I feel it is the first-must play Kirby game that was released for anyone looking to just play the best the series has to offer. It just makes the 4.5 review of it on NWR all that much more shameful.

Having played it and now going into Kirby's Dream Land 3, it actually has made me appreciate KDL3 even more. It's taken me awhile to warm up to KDL3. I've always wanted to like it but the first time I played it on the SNES, I was expecting something more like KSS where abilities have multiple powers. Instead the abilities were a single power although your animal friends could provide a twist on them. While there is a puzzle/mission to solve each level, how to accomplish it or what might be needed can sometimes be vague and sometimes easy to figure out. It left me rather disappointed at the time but I always meant to revisit it at some point. With the Kirby's Anniversary Collection, I thought that would be the opportunity to reappraise it. Instead, it ended up being on the SNES Switch app where I played it co-op with Mop it up. She's a big fan. While it was a better experience and I enjoyed seeing her know what to do in order to complete each mission, I was left with the impression still of this being a middle of the road Kirby platformer like Squeak Squad or The Amazing Mirror. However, that might have come from my instance at playing Gooey when we did co-op. I wanted to be the Gooester because I've always liked the look of him and can play Kirby anytime in single player so I might as well play it through with Gooey in case I never got another chance. But Gooey is not quite the same as Kirby and what he can do. Coming back to KDL3 now after almost a year later and playing it with Kirby while getting all the KDL2 references in it, the game is finally gelling with me and I'm finally loving it. Thanks to the Super Guide that is Mop, I was able to recall most of the missions and what to do. There's just been a couple I've had to look up. It's been a long journey but I'm finally ready to give KDL3 its due as part of the top tier of Kirby games also.

I've got 4 levels that I still need to complete the mission of. The getting Rick to the female hamster level is going to be the toughest challenge I think. It was tough when Mop and I did it in co-op and we had the rewind feature to help us out a bit to save some time there. Don't have it now. Hopefully it won't hold me back too long and I'll be able to wrap this game up quickly tomorrow morning. Also the mini-game of remembering which Gordo makes which sound is going to be challenging.

Toki Tori progress continues along nicely. Have 10 normal puzzles to go and I'm hoping by the end of those they get me to the credits screen. RABicle's been able to come along and pad his lead today so that should keep him safe from being surpassed now.

BotW is finished!

I played it for 6 hours today. I Went to Zora's Domain, got the shock arrows, then went to the divine beast. The bit where you have to hit away the ice blocks is really annoying.
That divine beast is quite easy, so it didn't take too long.
I did another shrine or two to get another heart.
Then I went back to defeat the Desert boss. It was still really annoying, but I did it after a few tries.
Then I had 13 hearts, so I went and grabbed the master sword.
Next, I went straight to the castle, to avoid most of the guardians, I climbed up the side, as close as possible to the entrance.
I went in and died very quickly.so I watched a video guide on on it, just so I knew what to expect. Then I defeated it without too much trouble.
I nearly failed the outside part of the battle. I didn't quite understand when I was supposed to shoot the eye. I got hit by the powerful attack, but Mipha's power brought me back.

Overall play time was 31 and a half hours. I'm very happy with that. I didn't want to take forever getting through it. Its especially good getting it done before the end of the month for the purpose of this topic.

I'm very happy I have finally been able to play it. Now I can say I have played through both the Switch and Wii U versions.

Nice! I remember trying to poke the ice cubes out the air at first with a lance which is indeed cumbersome. But if you use Cryosis you can destroy them in mid-air with ease, especially when using gyro aiming on the Gamepad.

Should completing the same game on a different platform really count for this? I don't think that really counts as a backlogue game since it's one someone has already completed before.

With that note...

Khushrenada, while it's nice to see you have a better appreciation for Kirby's Dream Land 3, we already completed it on NSO. Doesn't that make it a game you've already played and completed before?

We're gonna need a panel of judges for this!

I'm not sure why you would question that. If I own DKC on SNES and can play it on the Switch, just because I've completed the Switch release doesn't mean I can go to my SNES copy and now have that save file there or vice-versa. I still need to complete that game for that system. With my Backlog account, I wouldn't complete DKC on SNES and then go and also say the GBA version or SNES Mini version or Switch online or 3DS VC or Wii U VC version was also complete and mark them all as beaten. Anytime I purchase a game and add it to my collection, it is for the purpose of playing it and beating it whether I have that title already on a different console form or not. The only thing I haven't really counted is Switch SNES Online games since that's a subscription thing and not something I own. It's just there for convenience now if I want to play one of those titles.

Moving on, I have now finished the Normal puzzles in Toki Tori 3D and seen the credits so that moves to the Beat pile. In addition, I've also finished Balloon Kid for GB VC. That game is out for blood in the end. It's like the designers were upset someone might progress that far!

That brings my total to 12 no matter how Mop it up may try to slander me otherwise!!

You can't beat the same game twice! If you already beat it on Wii U then you've already beaten it on Switch! I'll let Mop it up explain but none of this counted. You actually haven't played anything this month. :evil;

But seriously, nicely done. That's a faster finishing time then I'd have thought for just tackling the main story like that.

If you get a game you've already played, you're getting it to re-play it, not playing it for the first time again. I dunno, to me this all just sounds like loophole jargon being used to inflate the numbers. Which I suppose is a very Khushenada thing to do after all, hee hee. And now I wait for him to go play every version of, say, Super Mario Bros. that's out there just so he can boost his count and overtake RABicle at the last moment.

So if we're allowed to use games we've beat before and use loopholes then Kush just gave me the win.  The Castlevania Collection contains the Japanese versions of all the games except Simons Quest, plus some of these games do have different characters, endings and routes to take.  So does that mean each time I beat a game with a different character, or achieve a new ending, I can count that as a new total as well?

Lets see here

Castlevania

Beaten once

Akumajō Dracula(Japanese version of Castlevania)

Beaten once

Castlevania 2: Simons Quest

Beaten once with the worst endings
Beaten once with the best ending

Castlevania: The Adventure

Beaten once, but save states were used because I couldn't stand the game by the end.

Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse

Beaten as Trevor alone
Beaten with Sypha as partner
Beaten with Alucard as partner

Akumajō Densetsu(Japanese version of Castlevania 3)

Beaten with Grant as partner
Beaten with Alucard as partner

Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

Beaten once

Dracula Densetsu II(Japanese version of Belmonts Revenge)

Beaten once

Akumajō Dracula (Japanese version of Super Castlevania IV)

Beaten once on Normal
Beaten once on Hard

Castlevania: Bloodlines

Beaten once as John on Normal
Beaten once as John on Expert

Vampire Killer
(Japanese version of Bloodlines)

Beaten once as Eric on Normal
Beaten once as Eric on Expert

Kid Dracula

Beaten once

Dracula X: Rondo of Blood

Beaten once as Richter taking the top route stages
Beaten once as Richter using the lower route stages

Dracula X

Beaten once with the worst ending
Beaten once with Maria saved but not Annette
Beaten once with both Maria and Annette saved

So that's technically 24 games beaten, or 23 if The Adventure doesn't count because of save state use.  Hehe, I love those loopholes. ;D

Hey now! It's not a competition! This is just for fun.... *kicks rock whole holding hands behind his back and looking down sadly*

But the way I think pokepal148 is "judging" this is by the Backloggery criteria in which one might mark a game as Beaten meaning "The main objective has been accomplished. Usually marked by the defeat of a final boss and/or viewing of credits" or Completed meaning "For games which are 100% done. All extras and modes have been unlocked and finished. All significant items have been collected". So, the first time you beat a game and achieve end credits would have it fall under the beaten category. But every time you go and get a different ending or play through as a different character would be part of the Completed category as you work to mine away at all the game has to offer. But Completed can only be counted once from when all of those extra tasks or modes are finished. If you played it through again with another character and beat it then that doesn't count as a new Beaten entry. If there was another character one still had to play through then it doesn't count as a Completed entry either until that's done. Now should a game get two points for being Beaten and Completed? That's something I'm not going to worry about. Earlier I beat Yoshi's New Island and then I kept playing and unlocked all the bonus levels and completed them but I didn't list the game twice in this thread for accomplishing both tasks.

However, the main purpose of this thread was to have a friendly competition between us and Negative World report to see which community might finish the most games. So, I say let's count all your various titles and just make this competition a blowout. It was only when RABicle posted his comment too me after I mentioned finishing Yoshi's New Island that it wasn't a competition but he's winning that I thought I'd see if I could give him a run for his money.

Also, thanks to Mop it up, I have now beaten the following:

Super Mario Bros. on 3DS VC. Thank you Ambassador Program.

Super Mario Bros. on Wii U VC. Thank you Dan Laser for the free game coupon.

Super Mario Bros. in Animal Crossing GC. Have a bunch of NES games there I've never gotten around to.

Super Mario Bros. on Switch NES Online. Since pokepal148 counted Steefosaurus doing it earlier in this thread I guess I should take advantage as well.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on GBC VC. Thanks to everyone recommending it awhile ago in my Best of eShop series I keep meaning to get back to.

That's 5 which puts me at 17 and 1 ahead of RABicle now. Also, this is a joke. I haven't actually gone and done this today. But I did like Mop it up's suggestion of how I could "game" the system although Luigi Dude has clearly taken that suggestion and run even more wild with it.

I have completed Little Red Lie.

You know I've never actually beaten Super Mario Bros 2. Maybe I should find a copy of that somehwere and sort that out in the last hour and a half I have before midnight and the end of August.

Also Khush, SMB:D on GBC actually plays slightly different to the other SMB games. The physics are just a bit off and so it can be considered a unique challenge in of itself.

And remember everyone. This isn't a competition, but I won.

I will write a full wash up tomorrw. September starts with a board meeting for me and I'll jsut in the office typing to pretend to prepare for it.

Well, I wrap up August having now beat Kirby's Pinball Land for GB VC and Ducktales Remastered on Wii U. Maybe I could have pulled off Super Bomberman R for Switch if I stayed a bit more focused yesterday and today but 6 games in about 3 days is pretty darn good. That puts me at 14 for the month which is all-in-all pretty impressive and I'm not sure I've ever pulled something like that off before. Thanks RABicle for giving me something to suddenly push for. Who knows what might have happened had you suddenly challenged me early on instead of the 11th of the month?  :o

With Kirby's Pinball Land beat, that means I've now played through pretty much everything of the Kirby series in the 90s. In Chronological release order, there's only two games now I've really yet to play from the Kirby series in the 90s and 2000s and that is Kirby Tilt N' Tumble for GBC and Kirby's Air Ride for GC. I've dabbled in Air Ride before but never owned a GBC or Tilt N' Tumble so that could be a challenge or pricey barrier for one game. I still need to beat Kirby's Avalanche and Kirby's Dream Course. Got close on both and then never sealed the deal. I just didn't seem to be good enough at Puyo Puyo and I don't know why I didn't push through to the end of Dream Course after getting stumped a bit. Maybe next August.  ;)

14 games for me, 14 games for Luigi Dude and 17 for RABicle. That combined will have really helped us clobber Negative World report. By beating them, they have to shut down their forum and become part of our community now, right? Isn't that how this works?  ;D

Well looks like I was able to add one more right at the buzzer.  After hooking my Wii U back up for the first time in 2 years to play both Dracula X titles, I thought it was the perfect time to get back into that systems backlog.  Well, since we had a new Paper Mario released less then 2 months ago, what better game to clear from my backlog then the previous installment, Color Splash.

I started playing the game last week and wasn't sure if I could make it by the end of the month.  Well at 11:30 P.M Central timezone, I managed to beat Paper Mario: Color Splash.  I bought this game back in 2017 so no loopholes here, this was a true backlog title.  Too tired to write much more but I really enjoyed this game.  Gameplay wise I found this to be the most creative Paper Mario, of course keep in mind I have not played Origami King yet.  The game was constantly changing things up and has some of the funniest moments to happen in a Mario game.

The only negative was the combat system which is still rather shallow and most of the time feels pointless.  Only a few of the boss fights actually felt somewhat engaging and they were mostly toward the end of the game.  I know that's a dealbreaker to many, but I found everything else in the game strong enough to keep me playing to the end.

Ok, lets go, reflections on the month.

I really love the concept, my backlog of games (https://backloggery.com/RABicle) is enormous and this fun little public challenge to complete our backlogs gave me the impetus to tackle a bunch of old games I otherwise would've continued to ignore. It helps that I'm unemployed* at the moment with little reason to leave the house, but I think the thrill of posting that I had finished some games to our small circle prevented me from jsut distracting myself for hours on end. Clearing backlogs is a productive way to waste time!

So now I'll quickly go through my full list, this time in reverse chronological order of games I beat, I'll give a quick sentence describing the game for the unfamiliar and my feels about each, including whether I'll ever play them again. I'll elso give some estimated playtimes but nothing will be super accurate because I only have my 3DS with me at the moment, actually I can get accurate playtime stats for that so 3DS games will have some real data.

Retired

All up, about 90 hours of gaming for the month. Which is a lot for me. I don't know what I would normally average.

Unplayed list of shame:
I am disappointed with myself that I didnt play these. I thought listing them would've made me publicly accountable, but the truth is none of these games even got touched. Many of these games are much larger, expansive games than those I did complete and I think some of them I had decided I would rather enjoy played at their own pace over time rather than consumed rapidly like the games I did beat. I pledge to finish them all before the end of the year though!

Anyway I think that's about it for me for Backlaugust. I'd love to do something similar next year. Too burnt out to go straight into Completember though. I might expand my thoughts on some of these games over at Pietriots so be sure to set it as your browsers homepage to check everyday because you're jsut dying to know about Ringo Ishikawa's existentialism or the duality of Rayman.

* If you're paying attention I mentioned in a previous post that I have a board meeting today and it's true, I sit on the board of my alma mater because I somehow won an election that 30 people voted in 3 years ago. And while I am compensated for my time, it's not exactly a livable wage. If anyone has any work opportunites please let me know.

Too tired to write much more but I really enjoyed this game.  Gameplay wise I found this to be the most creative Paper Mario, of course keep in mind I have not played Origami King yet.

Nice! As a fan of Sticker Star, I've been looking forward to playing this and wish I'd chosen to do so instead of Super Paper Mario but probably better to get a lesser entry out of the way and have something fun to look forward too. I had it listed among the 5 Wii U games I most want to play in pokepal's Forum Retrospective but the crowd chose DKC:TR so I'll get to that first. (That's not a bad thing either as DKC:TR is now the last game in the DKC series that I have yet to play and beat so doing so will have me finally complete running that series.)

Well looks like I was able to add one more right at the buzzer.

A buzzer beater to beat my buzzer beaters!!

That makes 46 games combined with you, me and RABicle.

Were you close to finishing MGS4, TOP? It was the last of the three games you listed as wanting to finish this month.

I put some hours in. I'm on act 4, presumably only 1 or 2 more to go. It's the kind of game you don't want to play too much in one go, lots of cutscenes and things to digest. The game has an absolutely deserved reputation when it comes to cinematics.

So yeah I picked it up again after a long hiatus and I've got the rest of the series on PS3 waiting for me to get a move on

Congrats on these absurd numbers everyone, and thanks to the Negative World folks for putting up with our numberpadding lol.

@Rabicle, drop us a note somewhere if you ever write your Duality of (ray)Man essay. That game's sat in my backlog for years and I'm never in the mood for it because I don't want to constantly multi-taks with both screens when doing a platformer.

EDIT: Maybe in October we could try to purge our backlogged horror games? I'm never getting to Resident Evil Revelaitons without peer pressure.
