I'm just about to leave for the store.  My only question is how do you register friends since there are no friend codes?  I want to play with people on the site but I haven't got anyone Wii system number yet.

There is no game friend code or need to obtain anyone's console number to add to your address book.  You can perform a search for any players name and then send a personal message to them with a request to add them to your in-game friend roster (note that you don't need to add anyone to your roster play with them).  So, as far as your friends in the forum, all you need to do is find out what their MH3 player name is and then you can search for them and send a message with a friend roster add request.

You can use the roster to see if your friend is online, their status, send a message or warp to the city they are in.  Pretty slick.

I was only online for about 30 minutes just to see how it worked and to visit the city.  I didn't join up with anyone in the city to go questing.

I have a question. If this game doesn't use friend codes and instead goes by someone's name, does that mean that duplicate names can't exist? If so, then it's a bad thing the game doesn't have friend codes.

Lindy, Neal.. I've got you guys down to be added once I get home from work later this afternoon.

I'm on there as "Racht".

Add me when you guys get the chance.  Can't wait to go slaying some beasts with you guys.. I had way too much fun playing last night with two of my close friends.  I'll keep checking this thread, too, for any other staffers or people I recognize previously.

Oh, and Mop it up... no, it's not a bad thing.  Because the game ties a "Monster Hunter ID #" to your individual name, too.  You can search for someone through this number or just their name.  It's genius, actually.  So there could be multiple "Racht's" out there.. but mine will have a unique MH ID# attached to it.  All you gotta do is just message me in game to find out if it's me.  :)

Hmmm...

I can't find anyone listed here.  It looks like when you use Player Search, it won't find them unless they are actually online?  I tried Compose Message, but the only options are to send a message to the player's ID number or someone already on your friend roster. I don't see a way to send to a Player Name directly (unless you are already in a city with them and can use the chat log).

I think we should list our MH ID here as it's the only way to Compose a Message with invite to someone not already on your roster.  Your ID will be on the player select screen when you go online.

Looks like it found you, but it said you were not connected.  It appears that in order to send a message, that player has to be online.  This is strange.

Argh. If the wife drags me to Seward this weekend, I won't be able to get the game until after the 28th. If we find out the weather in Seward is abysmal, then I'll be able to get it this weekend!

Looks like I found something semi-useful on IGN...  http://faqs.ign.com/articles/108/1084706p1.htmlIt looks like adding friends is probably easier using the Monster Hunter ID thing.  I wonder if you have to be in the same city/town to actually send a message or add a friend?
Quote
2) So this game doesn't use friend codes?

Actually, yes it does (contrary to what Capcom has been saying). For each
character you create it is assigned a unique 6 digit Capcom ID that you can
give to your friends to add you. Fortunately, getting other players' codes is
not required to play with other people online and is not required to use
Wiispeak. Unfortunately, character names are not unique, so expect to see a
zillion Greatsword users named some variation of Cloud Strife.

3) I hate voice chat/don't like Wiispeak, do I need to use it to play online?

No, you can use a keyboard, or you can use some pre-assigned messages.
Furthermore, you can mute other players who are really annoying you. Hooray!

4a) Is the online like PSP where I connect with other people ad-hoc?

No, the online system is actually that, online. You can do missions and play
with and talk to other people that you do not know and you have never met over
capcom's servers.

4b) How do I join other games online/meet other players?

Here's a nice video demonstrating the process in Japanese with tons of captioning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP2DaOkyFTQ

The brief explanation: you search for different game rooms, find a town with
other players in it that are doing what you want to do, and go into town. From
town you can suggest a mission to do on the mission board. If no one in the
town wants to do that mission, you can search for other players who want to do
that mission. Towns are limited to 4 players, but missions can only have a max
of 4 people. You can also create private game rooms and bring in your friends.

5) How do I add friends online?

There are a few ways. You can search for players by name or by code. Also, in
game you can look up a character's info and send them a friend request right
there in game.

Yeah, I tried adding everybody last night and couldn't find anyone.  What's this Capcom ID that everybody's mentioning?  The only code I see is the "Capcom Support Code" on the Village/City selection screen.  Mine is:

I have no idea if this is useful or not.

That's a support code that I think you use if you have technical support issues.

Your Hunter ID is a 6 character code and can be found after you connect online and are asked to choose your player to enter the City Gate with OR if you are at a City Gate or in a City you can go to your Game Menu and select Status and get the ID.

I am still at a loss on adding anyone.  I suspect we'll all have to be online at the same time to find each other in order to send roster invites.

I've tried adding Seacor as well.  I think he's right; we have to be online at the same time to add each other to friend's lists.  Kind of lame, but it's something that can be remedied.

I think you only have to be online together the first time to add people.  After that, you will be able to instantly warp to your friends by selecting them from the list, according to a moderator at the Capcom Unity forums.

I'm online for another hour or so, if anyone wants to try adding me to their friends list.

Also, Lindy, I noticed that the server messages state that the Monster Hunter Server maintenance occurs between 12 AM and 4 AM on Tuesdays.  It didn't indicate which time zone that might be, so it might be worth noting when scheduling hunting days.
