Nintendo Takes Three Trophies At The Game Awards

It got dusty there for a minute.

The Game Awards have wrapped in Los Angeles, and Nintendo was able to bring home a couple of awards.

Super Mario Maker was the winner in the Best Family Game category, while Splatoon captured Best Multiplayer Game and Best Shooter among its nominations. The Best Multiplayer was given on stage, but the announcer said "Splatoon also won for Best Multiplayer" in the walkup, meaning it won one other trophy. In other categories Nintendo had nominations in, CD Projekt Red took Developer of the Year and The Witcher 3 won the overall Game of the Year category, while the unusually combined Best Mobile/Handheld category went to Lara Croft Go over Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

Although there were no Nintendo announcements during the show, an emotional tribute was held for late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, featuring an emotional speech by Reggie Fils-Amie.

Perhaps the most controversial moment of the night came after Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was awarded Best Action/Adventure game, as show host Geoff Keighly specifically cited an order from lawyers at Konami as to why embattled director Hideo Kojima could not attend the ceremony.

Not mentioned after the Keighly bomb: "Shade" Raymond burning Kiefer Sutherland by calling David Hayter the voice of Solid Snake.

I am happily surprised that Splatoon won Best Multiplayer and Best Shooter. I thought the hold of Destiny would have been too strong, that Battlefront would have turned out better, or Halo 5 would win by having a lot of good stuff. But Splatoon's novelty (as well as it's sound execution) has edged it over a field of big sequels and seasoned genre developers.

As for "in memory" tributes go, this one for Iwata was fine.

As for The Game Awards 2015, I think the show was okay. It is obvious that the finances that Geoff Keighley could scrounge are strained, given the amount of painful ad copy spread permeating throughout the show. Maybe this is the awards show video games deserve?

Not bad for a game without voice chat. ;)

The only jarring thing about the Iwata tribute was the stupid crowd waving their hands during Ben Harper's song.

@Shaymin

There is only once voice for Solid Snake and that's David Hayter.

Naked Snake/Big Boss though...we've got two. Keifer Sutherland and David Hayter.

Really glad and very impressed that Splatoon won Best Shooter. Glad the freshness was properly acknowledged.

It's a bummer, but Lara Croft GO looks really fun.

I agree. It's a decent little puzzle game. Better than anything on the Vita or 3DS this year, though? Hell no.
