A better question is, why isn't Duck Hunt also considered to be tied as the "most successful videogame"? After all, it was a combo cartridge containing both Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. I know that both games were available separately for a short time, but... how much did each of them sell? Shouldn't Duck Hunt at least be second (or now third)? And then there was the triple-game cartridge which also had World Class Track Meet...

An even better question: how important is topicality?

I don't pre-order unless there's a bonus for doing so. I don't want to commit to a game without reading reviews first.

There's nothing which is a definite buy for me, I'm just observing the release schedule and waiting for some solid information on the various games in production.

That is quite an interesting observation LuigiHann, and it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case. However, such a thought depresses me even further.

Wasn't Brawl developed by a team who usually makes RPGs? That probably has to do with it being serious, and having an opening theme which does not fit the game one bit.

Pap64: If Sakurai wanted people to take Brawl seriously as a fighter then he shouldn't have dumbed it down and added a slew of overly powerful items and cheap attacks which can be spammed to victory. I don't think making Smash more serious was really his intention anyway, as the whole reason he made the original Smash in the first place was because he wanted to make a 4-player fighting game which wasn't as complex as your traditional fighter. Of course, after eight years perhaps his vision had changed. Sure seems like it...

I have heard that Wii Sports has passed up Super Mario Brothers as the "Most Successful Videogame", surpassing its 40 million copies. I'm not surprised to see this happen but I thought it would take longer than this; it's been out just over two years! I wonder how long Super Mario Brothers took to reach 40 million...

I would never wish for such a thing as dull colouring. Any game featuring Mario should look like a rainbow exploded.

Whoever decided to make the Mushroom Kingdom stage in Brawl look like a desert deserves to be dragged out back and beaten severely with a bat of many colours.

Mario Kart Wii has been accused as being dumbed down for casuals.
The great thing about Mario Kart Wii is that it gives you the option of having drifting be performed automatically or manually. Even better is that manual is better in most circumstances because it gives you the drift boosts.

In Mario Super Sluggers, you can have fielding and base running be performed automatically or manually. In this instance as well, manual is better because the A.I. is a bit single-minded.

This is the kind of thing I would like to see in all of Nintendo's games. Include options to customize the game to be simple or complex, possibly giving the more complex way a bonus or two because it's more difficult. This kind of thing can encourage people to become more skilled at a game; start out playing it the simple way, and after you get the hang of that switch to the more complex way. This would also allow you to play multiplayer games with people who have never played the game before and still give them a chance to win.

I hope the Mario Power Tennis Wiimake has some such option. After you learn how to hit the ball correctly in Wii Sports Tennis, there's nowhere to go from there.

Melee and Brawl were too serious.
I couldn't agree with this more when it comes to Brawl. The art style of that game uses dramatic shading and colouring that does not fit in with many of the characters in the game, such as Mario, Kirby, Pokémon, etc. It is to such an extent that the art style is rather drab and depressing to look at. Melee got a tad more serious than the first game but it was still bright, cheerful, colourful, and wacky. Brawl has only the fourth of those things, though not to the extent of Melee.

it would make the shopkeeper dance around and praise you.
Depending on who they sent to do that, it might not be such a bad prize after all. ;)

Seriously?
SERIOUSLY?
Srsly?

They actually simplified an already simple game? It's not like the original was Street Fighter Tennis with ten+ buttons used to make a shot! I've seen "non-gamers" (my mop I hate that term!) pick up Mario Tennis and kick some ass within minutes! And I talking about Mario Tennis for N64, with the huge three-pronged monstrosity for a controller.

I was considering buying this when it gets released but if this simplification is true then I'm just going to get the original instead. Though I may still refuse to get either one as this game phails hard for excluding Toad and Birdo as playable characters.

What you say Ian makes some sense. With something like Kirby's Dream Land 3, the VC download doesn't cost very much compared to the original cartridge. It's also a way to try the game out to see if it's actually worth owning the original.

Though I'm not really a collector, I still have collectorial tendencies that I can't break. I simply cannot bring myself to play a downloaded game, not even ROMs which are free (don't care about the legality of them). It has to be the original format, on the original system, with the original controller it was designed for, otherwise it just doesn't feel right. I also like to display my gaming stuff on shelves and such, and you can't really do that with a download. Lastly, downloaded games can't be brought to a friend's place without lugging over the entire system; I have a similar problem with games which have save files that can't be copied to an SD card.

Anyways, I guess what I'm saying is that the VC is great for the average gamer, but is of no value to the collector. Fortunately we're a rare breed.

On the contrary, that was the only point of the four which wasn't serious. :P

EDIT: Actually there is still a problem with that... downloadable games work only on the console they were downloaded to. From what I've seen of Wii I doubt very many Wii systems will still be functional in ten years.

Remember what you got for getting together the points at the floating store in Wind Waker (at least the first few times)?
No I don't as I never tried for it. I'm guessing it was something useless...

Just start collecting downloads.
After I complete the game, could I hug the download?
No.
If I lose repeatedly, could I hurl the download across the room?
No.
Can I be assured I can still play the download in ten years?
No.
If I'm building a block tower and am running low on blocks, can I substitute a game download?
No.

Anyways, considering I have a dearth of gaming skill I've no problem with Kirby games being easy. Dream Land 3 definitely sounds like a game I'd like, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth the money when factoring in the other things I could buy for that price. If I'm going to buy a downloadable game it has to be something not available elsewhere.

I have also fixed and beautified your blurry mess of an avatar. Birdo should not be blurred. :)
Ha ha, yeah, MS Paint will do that. I should really invest in Paint Shop Pro sometime.
Thanks though. :)

I've wanted Kirby's Dream Land 3 for some time now but the original SNES cartridge is kind of expensive. The collector in me demands I buy games on physical media... but this download costs four times less than the SNES cartridge. :(

I just need 90 more coins to reach the platinum status. That's just two more of Nintendo's Wii games, I'm sure I'll buy that before June. Or maybe I'll make it three DS games.

I find myself strangely curious as to what the gift you get for platinum status is. Would hoping for a game be ill-advised? Something like the Game And Watch Collection... Maybe a "sequel" to it or something...

Definitely friends. Any friend of Birdo is a friend of mine.
Hm, well, the thing is, I can't use that image as my avatar now so I will have to find another one. Even so, I guess that shouldn't be a reason why we can't be friends.

*high five*

 :)

EDIT: By the way Dasmos, I just noticed that you've mirrored the image as Birdo's ring is on his right hand... ???

Smash Brothers was one of the few Nintendo 64 games I bought on release (or maybe it was couple days after...), even although I didn't even want it originally. I was out shopping with my friend, he picked up this game and said "check this out, Mario is in a fighting game!" I looked at the box in disbelief as Mario pummeled Pikachu on the cover; I never thought I'd see such a sight. Skeptical as I was, there was nothing else I wanted so I took it home. After all, you can beat up Pikachu with a bat so it couldn't be all bad.

I'ma gonna need to slide this into my N64 on April 26th, for old time's sake.

Holy mop Dasmos, your current avatar is absolutely awesome!  ;D
In fact, I use that very image of Birdo as my avatar on a couple other forums that I visit, and I've even considered using it here. Never thought I'd see anyone else with it...

I can't decide if this means we should be friends... or enemies... :-\

My choices in alpha order:

Chrono Trigger: The music in this game is beyond words. Seriously, any word fitting enough to describe its excellence isn't within my vocabulary.

Earthbound: This is about as close as I've seen to a videogame being a parody of another game. Since the gameplay is so similar to Dragon Warrior, it really feels like a parody of it, with all of the wacky enemies and random situations and all. Plus the battle backgrounds are like an acid trip with no risk of health effects.

Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past: Best 2D Zelda of them all. No real need to explain why because you probably already know.

Super Mario RPG: Still the best Mario RPG, it managed to put a spin on RPGs without becoming too simple like Paper Mario. It also introduced some new characters who still fit in with the Mario universe.

Super Mario World: Not as ambitious as Super Mario Brothers 3, but it was so well refined as to avoid being a step back.

Super Metroid: This has got to be as good as a 2D adventure game can get. The atmosphere that this game manages to create on such a "limited" platform is still wholly engaging to this very day.

There were so many more I wanted to select, but I went with these as they are likely my most-played.

Make the new Zelda a side-scroller.

2. Mario Kart Wii (My main gripes are that you can't have 1 on 1 versus)
Yes you can. On the screen where you select whether you want to play a Solo or Team VS race, there is a little blue circle on the top right of the screen; select it to go to the options screen where you can turn off the computer players. This same option menu can also be found on the battle mode select screen.
