Nintendo Gaming / Re: Ghost Recon Online - Wii U Footage
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:56:53 PM »
Why does the cameraman keep pointing down at the stupid little screen that we can't even see any detail of?

Also, nobody's talking about the most interesting fact about this game, which is that it was previously a PC EXCLUSIVE.

That really is some lovely Zelda footage.  It's a pity it's shackled to that controller.  Maybe Nintendo will see sense and redesign it to a much more logical layout.

I'm wondering exactly what you want them to do with it.

Wow, being able to play my GameCube games would have been a major factor in deciding whether or not to buy this thing.  Looks like I'm skipping yet another generation of Nintendo consoles.

If the ability to play games from a two-generations-old console is a "deciding" factor, why would you even consider getting a new system in the first place? Clearly you have no interest in modern games, so why would you even think about it?

This game just goes to show that we have hit a graphical barrier. I don't see any reason why we would need even better graphics than this.

That's what they said about the N64. And then the Xbox.

Comics are dying in the same way that PC gaming is dying. Which is to say that they already had their slump, and they're actually coming back, but for some reason everybody thinks they're dying.

To be fair, it's also coded in a pants-on-head retarded language by people who aren't exactly at the top of their craft as far as optimization goes.

Flash memory is cheap enough nowadays that a cartridge based system could easily be a reality. So long as the save file and any additional DLC is also stored on the cartridge, I wouldn't really have an issue with it.

I, too, would love the ability to only access my games and write save files a million times before it can NEVER BE USED AGAIN.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: App market
« on: April 12, 2011, 04:57:04 PM »
How would an App market on the 3DS be a threat and much less a nail in iPhone gaming coffin?

*Scratches head* I have no idea either. 3DS and an iPhone are so incredibly different, that it won't matter one bit what either of them do.

By that logic, it's impossible for the iPhone gaming market to be cutting into Nintendo's handheld market share, only we know that it's already happening, so saying that "it won't matter" what either of them do is just wrong. Phones are getting more powerful every day, and it won't be long until they have full games that are just as complex and in-depth as you'd except on a handheld gaming machine, only it will be on your phone, which you already take everywhere you go. Add to that the fact that you can download a bunch of 99 cent whatever games, and it makes the iPhone very appealing as far as gaming goes, especially for anybody who isn't super into video games.

Most people in the US have perfectly fine Internet for downloading or streaming games. I live in New Hampshire of all places, and I get 20 MB/s download on speedtest.net. Steam downloads between 1.5-2.5 MB/s

Yeah... Everyone that's accused of a crime is clearly guilty.

There have been cases of people whose accounts were hijacked and used for shenanigans, and they got their accounts back. It's not like Valve is in the business of just blanket screwing over all their paying customers.

Beyond the worry of being arbitrarily denied access to your purchased goods, there are greater concerns of what happens to your content after the service has died and the company has gone bankrupt. Hint: it's gone and you're fucked.

Except Valve has already said that in the event something were to happen to the company and they were no longer able to provide the service for a prolonged period of time, they would unlock everybody's games, allowing them to be played without Steam.

11
Sadly I won't be using Impulse anymore. I don't like Steam because of the idea that they could ban yourself and literally deny you access to games you purchased. You aren't really buying them but leasing/renting hem from them if they can do that

That's true of all digital download services, and the only reason to be worried about it at all is if you're doing something you shouldn't be doing anyway.

Gamestop is delusional if they think they can crack the hold that Steam has on the  digital distribution market.

Nintendo Gaming / App market
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:20:05 PM »
Has there been any word on whether Nintendo has even considered allowing an app market a la Android and the iPhone? If they did, it could very easily be the first and final nail in the coffin of iPhone gaming, though knowing Nintendo I very much doubt they've even thought about it.

Only in the event that the game that those boxes and manuals went to was unable to be found. Sometimes discs just seem to disappear, and somebody will pull a case off the shelf and want to buy it, only for there to be no game. So the case just gets thrown in the trash, along with whatever is in it. Oftentimes, the game is found several days/weeks/months later.

I'm fine with what we've seen so far. Granted I saw the whole 20-minute demo at PAX.

It's already a lot better than the Call of Duty campaigns, which are nothing but balls to the wall action 100% of the time. This actually bothers having downtime and slow parts. DICE have said that they're "trying to create a song, not a guitar solo."

I guess Deus Ex at #33 isn't AWFUL, considering the #1 and #2 slots. The top 20 is entirely monopolized by Nintendo (mostly Zelda) and Final Fantasy, as well as a handful of fairly recent games, none of which really break any ground or do anything better than their predecessors, with Portal being the possible exception (I'll give a free pass to Half-Life 2 because of how perfectly paced it was). I mean really. Mass Effect and Fallout 3?

EDIT: Deus Ex at #2 on the Top PC Games list makes me feel better.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: E3 2011 Predictions
« on: March 10, 2011, 05:36:30 PM »
Nintendo would be stupid to do that again.
Really? I'd buy an HD/better textures version of Skyward Sword on newer, more powerful hardware ANY day over the current Wii version. Easy.  And I'm sure hundreds of thousands of Nintendo fans who prefer "core" games would, too.

Doesn't really sound that stupid to me.

So you're saying that you would LOVE for Skyward Sword to be delayed, just like TP was delayed, just so you can buy a new console and play it on that?

Thats retarded.

Not to mention that continuing the trend of delayed dual releases completely eradicates the idea that Skyward Sword is the first "real" Wii Zelda game.

As it turns out, it doesn't matter, as I managed to secure a three-day pass at face value for myself! Probably going to see you guys there, provided nothing else is going on at the same time (which I doubt).

Need I also point out that there is a "Limited Edition" of BFBC2 which is exactly the same as the regular version except that it has those "unlocks"? So if you buy the Limited Edition you're getting the exact same thing as the regular version except that some stuff is unlocked immediately instead of you having to earn it. That's all the Limited Edition is... how can that be justified?

Because they want your money even if you buy used. That's what it boils down to. You buy the game new, you get all the additional content for free. Buy it used, you have to give EA ten bucks to access it. That's what Bad Company 2 did, and that's what Battlefield 3 is doing. I don't really see or have any issue with it, as buying the game new basically gives you free updates, something which has gone somewhat the way of the dinosaur over the last few years. And even if you buy it used, it's not like a one-time ten dollars for access to all the same additional content is exactly price-gouging.

None of the stuff that you're given access to in the "Limited Edition" is stuff you can unlock by simply playing the game. It's all extra content that you just don't get unless you pay for it either by buying new, or by buying a VIP code or whatever.

As to the potential for epic setpieces in the single-player campaign, I think this video answers that question pretty well.

This, the live demo of Deus Ex, and the concert with Powerglove and the Video Game Orchestra are all happening on the one day of the convention that's completely sold out. None of these things were mentioned by their respective parties before the tickets sold out. What gives?

Oh yes. It's coming, and when it does, it shall be glorious. Personally, I'm hoping the single-player campaign will have co-op functionality, because I'm not sure if I can slog through Epic Setpieces: Modern Warfare by myself. Naturally, I'm eagerly awaiting news and real information about the multiplayer, but my understanding is that the beta is starting up sometime soon, so I guess we'll know then!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii 2 Launch Titles

The 3DS seems to indicate to me that Nintendo is turning over a new leaf in regards to their relationship to third parties

The same could be said of the DS.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii 2 Launch Titles

The Wii 2 will launch with Wii Sports Party; some Ubisoft Shovelware; some EA SPORTS titles; perhaps 1 notable core-oriented 1st Party title; and millions of gamers will convince themselves that that is enough for a good 3-8 months.  There isn't a chance in hell of 95% of of those games you listed launching with the system (assuming we see new installments at all, which is extremely unlikely in the case of Epic Mickey and Goldeneye), Kytim, let alone all of them in the same window.

This. Seriously, just look at the history of Nintendo launches. When has there EVER been anything as good as any of the games you named out on launch?

General Gaming / Re: Accessiblity and the Fighting Game Genre
« on: February 26, 2011, 03:00:18 PM »
This is why Smash Bros. is the only fighting game I play and am any good at. It's entirely based on what individual move you choose, how you position yourself when you execute, and the timing with which you execute it. It's the epitome of easy to learn, hard to master.

Most fighting games (Blaz Blue included) are all about that, but then as soon as you execute a successful move, you're expected to hammer out some long-ass memorized combo to actually do any REAL damage. A more balanced game based on the Smash Bros. style of fighting and moving would be the perfect fighting game to me, to be honest, and may be one that I would sink some time into in an effort to get good at.
