Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:36:24 AM »
A new Donkey Country title is announced and is to launch in November.

It looks similar to DKCR returns with simultaneous Donkey and Diddy Kong players allowed. However, Dixie Kong is back! Still no King K. Rule but some Owls are the bad guys instead.
This is the Retro game.

I guess so but part of me wonders if they couldn't be working on something else also. Would a 2d game really need that big a staff working on it?

Still, I guess at this point, we should expect one more DK game from Retro to close out the trilogy before they move onto something else. I think the reason people are disappointed is because all the speculation was that Retro was working on something new and this is what they just did. That said, it's partly Nintendo's fault for keeping it under wraps so long allowing people to speculate that it must be a huge weapon they were going to use to win people over.

It was a bit underwhelming visually and lacking in new gameplay, but I will buy it at some point for sure.  The style of the enemies and environment is more appealing to me than the Wii one.

Remember Reggie's comment last year that Retro was working on something "everyone" wanted them to make?  I...just...gah...are you really that out of touch with the fanbase Reggie?  I think the game will be great, but I mean come on!

Pretty sure that comment is false. I asked a Retro developer about that very statement and he told me none of them said that. I certainly don't remember Reggie saying it.

I want Retro to make a non-waggly DK platformer. So Reggie's not exactly wrong on that front.

Remember Reggie's comment

Reggie is an idiot.  Just a suit with a teleprompter that doesn't give a damn about anything he is trying to sell. He is completely emotionless during presentations.  He has no zeal at all.

Exactly. No zeal.  He has no enthusiasm at all.  He is a terrible public speaker.  Emotionless and dry.  He doesn't give a damn about anything he is trying to peddle.

If he doesn't care why should I?  Just another executive in a suit trying to convince me to buy something that he doesn't even care about.

So the original DK music composer is working on this games music. We have Dixie and no forced motion controls. Why aren't people happy? Have you seem the extended trailer yet? This is going to be amazing!

The main reason people are unhappy is that they wanted Retro to be doing something other than this. I think most would concede that it's likely to be an excellent game.

You know, I think I understand why Retro is making Donkey Kong Country instead of Metroid.

I think this project started when another part of the team got shipped off to Mario Kart 7, I also suspect that other people from retro's staff had been shipped off to help iron out various other 3DS and Wii U projects in a smaller role(maybe one or two people helped with 3d land) along with other things (somebody from there was probably also overseeing things like dkcr 3d and metroid blast in nintendo land)

This is probably basically the result of the guys on home team tinkering with the Wii U dev kit and then pulling out some unused level designs and transferring assets so they could say they had a game ready.

New Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Info!
« Reply #17 on: January 20, 2014, 01:23:05 PM »
Gamexplain posted a preview video after their 4 hours of playtime with the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpeoJEIjg0Q&feature=youtu.be

Here's just some quick notes:

- Rambi returns, is again the only playable animal buddy
- online leaderboards for players to compete for best times
- ability to record best runs and upload them online
- some levels have alternate exits
- one level is a mine cart level through a sawmill
- another takes place around and then inside a twister

We're still stuck with only Rambi? We don't even get Enguarde for the new water levels? *sigh*

At least that's what the Mr. Gamexplain said that a Nintendo rep confirmed.
I would hope not, though!

From listening to the video, it seems Retro split what used to be Enguarde's underwater abilities between the 3 secondary kongs: speed (Diddy), manuverability (Dixie), and attack (Cranky). I just wonder what the point of even having the animal friends in the game is if they're only going to have one of them. Oh right...it's so Nintendo can have their "Yoshi" character.  And the worst stages from the last game are back (the one-hit-kill rocket barrel stages). Oh joy.

Eh...I dunno. I've been rather tepid on this game since it was announced, and while it looks OK I'm still waiting for something to get announced that would actually make me excited for it. It's increasingly looking like that's not going to happen. I might end up canceling my preorder. February's release list is nuts, and that $50 might be better spent elsewhere.

Try not to worry. I'm sure that the reveal for Candy Kong and Lanky Kong is just 'round the corner. 'Cause everyone loves the extended Kong clan am I right?!

I'm pretty surprised they brought Funky back. I really thought they were trying to keep as much extended DKC character stuff out of the mix as possible (why else not use Kremlings instead of those generic Tiki enemies?) and draw the line at Dixie. And yet, still no rideable animals besides Rambi.
