The Donkey Kong Bananza Direct has dropped new details for next month's destructive platformer.

The "Oddrock" character originally shown at the game's reveal was actually Pauline, who will accompany DK during the bulk of the adventure as a singer. DK's powers were shown, including transformations into other animals, and the game's villains (the "Void Corp" with three evil Kongs) were also revealed.

New game modes were also announced, including a co-op mode (using a Joy-Con) where the co-op player controls Pauline for singing-based attacks; this can be shared to Switch 1 consoles via GameShare or online with the GameChat / Game Share functions. A photo mode and mouse-based "DK Artist" mode will also be available.

Bananza will also have Amiibo support. A new Donkey Kong and Pauline Amiibo will launch the same day as the game: tapping it specifically will unlock the Mario Odyssey idol outfit for Pauline. Tapping DK Amiibo will drop giant, explosive KONG letters, and tapping any other Amiibo will drop other items.

[But perfection - at least for now - comes with a cost.]

Pokemon Go is adding an often-demanded mainline game feature next week.

Hyper Training, a function introduced in 2016's Sun and Moon which allows a Pokemon to have the maximum possible stats for its level and base stats, will be added to Pokemon Go next week. The option to max out a single Pokemon will be a final major reward for a battle pass that unlocks next week ahead of an "Ancients Recovered" event leading up to the global Pokemon Go Fest the weekend of the 28th and 29th of June: the premium pass with the item will cost US$19.99.

As in the main games, a "Bottle Cap" will be required: the first one is a "Gold Bottle Cap" that will allow for all of a Pokemon's values to be maxed. The Pokemon trained must be selected by end of day on July 6, and tasks will be required to provide the increases that need to be completed within 1 year. Eligible Pokemon must be at least "Great Buddy" status with the player, and "Shadow" Pokemon cannot use the function.

The first release for the Switch 2 since launch lands this week in the potnetially-relevant-to-my-interests Raidou Remastered: Mystery of the Soulless Army - and it's on both Switch 1 and Switch 2 with no upgrade path. SEGAAAAAAAAA~! (derogatory) If you'd like to have the other part of the Persona formula instead, hit on everything all of the time with Date Everything, feat. every voice actor you've ever heard of in the role of literal objects, or if you prefer to leave things to the hands of fate you have Lost in Random: The Eternal Die.

The indie RPG Nova Hearts is also on way this week, as well as the long-awaited Tron: Catalyst. Small developer Bipedal Dog - fronted by longtime 1up and Retronauts staffer Ray Barnholt - is also coming to Switch with Blast Rush LS, unfortunately so is a trilogy of Gex. At least if you switched full time to the Switch 2, you don't have to worry about it since the Carbon Engine is being treated as the malware its reputation suggests, and nothing created with it actually works there as of press time.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: Backyard Baseball is back, baby with Backyard Baseball '97 for all of your Pablo Sanchez needs.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE WITHOUT JAPANESE: Possibly, it's an action-RPG with the stats on the right. Though it's the MSX version of Tritom, which already exists in PC-88x form already.

On the surface, the announcement of Switch 2 becoming the fastest selling console in the history of video games at a 3.5m+ clip during opening weekend makes the extreme paucity of Switch 2 announcements last week even less logical. As far as new game announcements, we had:

• Final Fantasy Tactics remaster and Mortal Kombat Kollection at Sony (both Switch 1 as well)
• Sonic Racing: Cross Worlds (delayed from Switch 1 release) as well as new characters for Marvel Cosmic Invasion (also Switch 1) and updates for Hitman: World of Assassination and Street Fighter VI at the SGF kickoff
• Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar trailer at Wholesome Games (also Switch 1)
• Call of the Elder Gods (hey, no Switch 1 release) and Constance (both Switch 1 and 2) at Future Games
• A demo for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3-4 that might be tied to preordering? (also Switch 1)
• Not being able to swing a dead Blofeld without hitting 007: First Light

That's five new Switch 2 games and updates for five more. Meanwhile, there's roughly 45 new Switch games. But frankly, we should have expected that for multiple reasons.

There's 152 Million Switch 1s In The Wild

The only comparable system transition to Switch 1 -> 2 is PlayStation 2 -> 3, and PS2 was getting relevant original releases - or at least localizations - as late as 2010. Meanwhile, the PS3 launched for 599 US dollars in November of 2006. PS2 got what would be considered a AAA game exclusively after the PS3 launched in God of War 2, and Persona 4's North American release was December 2008 (a game some considered the best game on PS2). The PS2 had a userbase that couldn't be ignored, and the intended replacement was a dramatic price increase from it - even more than Switch 1 to 2 since this was before price drops became a sign of desperation.

Even Nintendo has gotten in on this by maintaining Switch 1 versions for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Zut Alors later this year. We don't even know if Rhythm Heaven Groove and Tomodachi Life will have Switch 2 upgrade options or not. So if you can get the game to run on Switch 1, wouldn't you take that shot? Especially when you don't have to design with as much graphical fidelity?

A Flood Of Switch 2 Devkits Hasn't Happened Yet Or Just Happened

Right now, the Switch 2 games announced are largely from companies who would actually have to make the call on whether or not to use a Game Key Card for a potential retail release. A lot of the major third parties got them, and there's a certain size of smaller studio that has stuff released or announced. Think Toby Fox for Deltarune, Tribute for Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Shin'en for Fast Fusion. Who was in the showcase, especially on Saturday in the presentation tsunami? Smaller teams and solo developers. (And I mean actual small teams and solo devs, not "a few devs and their friends and 'oh we outsourced the big stuff'" a la Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Sounds like a great game, but in no way should it be seen as a "small team" project.)

I still need to check Switch 1's eShop weekly when doing the Downloads because it appears that if a game is having issues playing on Switch 2, it simply won't be listed on the Switch 2 eShop. And it's going to take multiple consecutive months of not getting a hit in that search before I'd be confident that enough developers are able to test their Switch 1 projects on the 2 even if they're not planning a bespoke version. And hopefully Nintendo is a little tighter with devkits to ensure there's a mass reduction of the Switch 2's slop quotient.

Alternatively, Nintendo has opened the floodgates already; I don't have first-hand knowledge. (Hey, if you know, sound off in Talkback or hit us up on Discord.) But realistically, that would have happened at some point this year either in January at the hardware reveal or April after the full unveiling. Two to five months is not enough time to present anything in modern video games unless you want to end up in a Shin Megami Tensei V situation (revealed on Switchmas I, launched nearly five years later).

Switch 2 Announcements Will Come Directly

In Microsoft's June 12 2022 Xbox Showcase, it was announced that the modern trilogy of Persona games (3 Portable, 4 Golden, 5 Royal) were coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series along with 3P and 5R coming to PC following the release of 4G in 2020. There were multiple rumors that Switch was going to get those releases, but there was nothing... until the Partner Showcase on the 28th of June which announced that the trio was coming to Switch 1 as well. Am I assuming the same thing will happen with Persona 4 Revival that was announced this past Sunday? Not really (it's PS5/Xbox Series/PC only currently), but if that comes to Switch 2 I won't be surprised. I'll just hope they don't replace Yuri Lowenthal's voice because they're removing Yosuke from the game entirely.

Nintendo does like to have exclusivity of announcements for their systems specifically, especially if it's going to be part of a Direct. There's been a Nintendo Direct of some kind for the last four Junes, and this is generally the time when Nintendo would commit to their full slate of release dates for the rest of the year. It's not guaranteed we get one (before the Switch 2 reveal we hadn't gotten a Direct that early in April since 2015), but I have a week off work the 23rd to 27th and fully expect to be on Direct duty one of those days. Nintendo loves timing these things to my vacations, after all. And when we got the Splatoon Raiders announcement, it was about a minute of a 5:32 video: that sounds like a teaser for a longer presentation.

Three other factors to consider:

• With Super Mario World (the movie) next year, are Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza going to be the main games that they push alongside it or could there still be an original Mario platformer?
• Doesn't it seem like the only person who wanted to work with Doritos Pope Geoff I was Reggie Fils-Amie who left six years ago? Nintendo has never really presented in the SGF window anyway (their 2021 Direct was tied to the infamous "all digital E3") and they've tamped down their appearances at the Winter Game Fest* since Joker in Smash.
• The Microsoft releases that have come to Switch 1 - Grounded, Pentiment, the Rare licensed stuff - has always been announced by Nintendo. It might make sense to have the Halo Master Chief Collection or Gears of War on Switch 2, and Nintendo platforms have a legal commitment to get something Call of Duty, but again - Nintendo would get to trumpet that.

There were 24 games (and five upgrade kits) on day 1 of Switch 2. Owners already have plenty of options, with more coming starting next week. Please don't start crying "dead platform" because you didn't see gratuitous 2s last weekend; those announcements will come in due time, and there's already a market of 3.5m+ to address.

[So I guess we can put those Switch 2 Pro rumors on ice for an Olympiad.]

Whether due to tariff fears or pent-up desire for the first new Mario Kart in more than a decade, the Switch 2 is off to a flying start.

A press statement from Nintendo this evening has confirmed that the first four days of Switch 2 saw "more than" 3.5m systems sold. This represents the fastest any Nintendo system has sold: for comparison, Switch 1's opening month of sale (March 3 - 31, 2017) was 2.74m units.

Regional breakdowns are expected when Nintendo issues their financial results for fiscal Q1 in late July or early August.

Last week saw the greatest expansion to the planning sheet ever with the two consoles combining for 96 releases in North America - and only 30 of them on Switch 2 including upgrade packs for Switch 1 games. Seriously, how did Switch 1 more than double the launch list of the Switch 2? This week is honestly more along the lines of what I expected, with around 20 games in the post-Summer Game Fest lull.

Apart from early access to the new Lost In Random (it would drop Friday ahead of that game's Tuesday launch), there's not much here to talk about anwyay. I suppose we've already got a non-shadowdrop game from this weekend with the launch of Re:Fresh, but that's about it - and there's nothing for Switch 2. Then again, we do get Raidou there next week and 29 games should be enough to last more than a weekend, right?

When Nintendo gave their pre-launch update on Switch 1 game compatibility for the Switch 2, they indicated that 65% of over 15,000 “partner” (third party) games worked without issue on the Switch 2. My two immediate reactions to that stat were:

1. "Yeah, that checks out."
2. '...did the liquor store close already?"

The sheer number of games on Switch 1 made exploring the eShop without use of the webstore an absolutely miserable experience, and it was promised that the Switch 2’s on-system shop would run much better. And though it does, and there have been steps taken to improve the discoverability of the shop, there’s still some updates that need to be made before it can be a truly usable alternative to DekuDeals.

Upon booting the shop, one big thing is that it by default respects the system’s theme; as someone who uses dark mode, it’s really nice that booting the store no longer brightens the screen dramatically. Much like the original’s store, the Switch 2 leads with the Featured releases, but the left side menu adds two new functions: “For You” and “Wish List”. The latter was previously only accessible from the user page, so it being front and center is a great change - and the new wish list which is probably predominantly Switch 1 games will advise you if a game is not available on Switch 2 due to tech issues. It can also be filtered for just items on sale, and in a change I’ve wanted for Switch 1’s entire life the Switch 2 will remove games from your wish list after purchasing them. This is how the Wii U and 3DS lists worked, and I never understood why this was changed for Switch 1.

The new Wish List is great, but the For You part needs some work still. Ostensibly, the list floats game recommendations that might have been previously in the Nintendo newsletter or at the bottom of a Year in Review page directly on the store, and to its credit it does update weekly. However, my first check of the list revealed a few problems. One, it is possible to get a recommendation for a game you already own. I have Hatsune Miku Project Diva Megamix already - though I didn’t buy most of its DLC - and yet that was the first game on the list this week. There’s also no option to express a lack of interest: Nintendo, I’m pretty sure if I was going to buy Animal Crossing: New Horizons I would have bought it with everyone else in 2020, or at worst once the DLC was put in the Expansion Pack. I’m not interested, and you probably should have figured that out by now. (I also question the inclusion of “Clock Simulator”.) The default view is the game’s trailer or main image, and the only way to see a collective list of what they’re recommending is to scroll through all ten (currently) entries before hitting the list with no option that I can find to skip to the end. At least if you do find something that passed you by, you can hit X to immediately wish list the item.

And no, you still can't use the system screenshot function on the eShop so I had to bust out the phone camera.

Although Nintendo does try to bury it, the main thing I have to check on a weekly basis is the New Releases page. And sadly, the burial seems to be reflected in the experience on that page being similar to the Switch 1’s (derogatory). After trying to hide the list behind the leaders in recent revenue is the normal list, which acts like For You in that it starts autoplaying the images of the game - including trailers. And unlike Switch 1, the autoplay trailer includes the sound. I nearly jumped off my couch the first time I left my cursor on a game and heard the signature Switch 1 click as the trailer started. There’s also no option I can see to only filter for games by system. Every webstore has this option, and if I want to shut out the Switch 1 games to really speed things up (or just see Switch 1 releases because I hate myself) I probably should be able to do that? There’s one other issue, which is that in week 1 of Switch 2 there were multiple 35th bundles for games that advertised their latest “edition” with red bars across the top of the icon. It was very easy to think that “Hentai World” was a Switch 2 game when you only see the red bar before you see the Switch 2 logo replaced with “Deluxe Edition”. If we’re not going to have system filters, this is a practice that needs to be stopped by Nintendo immediately.

The improvements from the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware did extend to the eShop, though. Even with having to pull Switch 1 games (there’s already 1200+ in North America this year as of June 7) the shop runs quickly and load times are minimal. Personally, I do also appreciate the game pages having an option to display the whole title of the game, even if it is something ridiculous like the full subtitle of Aksys Games’s “Mon-Yu” dungeon crawler.

Bottom center: Kill it. Ideally, with fire.

I think I’m going to be able to move my weekly hell week of eShop checking to the Switch 2; the speed of hitting the pages and “Coming Soon” being three icons wide definitely makes a four hour process… three hours. But if we can get some improvements here, it might become a rare bird - an actual usable system based storefront. Oh, and get some actual music while we’re at it. The Wii Shop theme is right there in Nintendo Music, after all.

The Legend of Zelda movie is now going to be an early part of a summer release season.

Shigeru Miyamoto took to Nintendo social media this morning to announce that the Sony Pictures co-production, which was announced for a March 26, 2027 release date at the end of March, will now launch on May 7 of the same year. The reason for the delay was not disclosed.

• A demo for the remasters of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 will be available soon, with two stages to skate in ahead of the July 11 launch on both Switch and Switch 2.
• A remastered version of Neverwinter Nights 2 (2006) was announced for a July 15 launch, including the original PC game's three expansions.
• Horror adventure Reset Dead was shown for a September launch.
• A Switch version of FMV mock television station Blippo+ will be available this fall: published by Panic (Untitled Goose Game, Thank Goodness You're Here!), a black and white version was part of season 2 of the software for Panic's Playdate handheld.
• Psychological horror platformer Love Eternal will be available in Q4 (October -> December).
• Thunderful announced a sequel to puzzle platformer Planet of Lana: the sequel subtitled "Children of the Leaf" will be available next year.

The day after the Summer Game Fest kickoff has traditionally held several game announcement shows, and with two new shows being added for 2025 it meant nearly six hours of game presentation. Below is a brief recap of the games confirmed for Switch 1 or 2 (not just "consoles") from today's events. Note that unless specified, these games were identified only with a Switch logo.

Wholesome Direct

• Two shadowdrops from the event were scrapbook creation game Instants and nonogram puzzle game / furniture creator Squeakross: Home Squeak Home
• July 10 sees the launch of Everdeep Aurora, in which a kitten has to use a drill to find their mother, and island explorer Islanders: New Shores
• Monument Valley III, announced in the March Nintendo Direct, is confirmed for July 25
• The 29th will allegedly see the release of the oft-delayed Tales of the Shire: A Lord Of The Rings game - the farm sim where you play a hobbit
• Potentially dystopian shop simulator Discounty will release on August 21
• A new trailer aired for Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar which will be a cross-platform release on August 27
• Due in August is Is This Seat Taken?, a puzzle game about seating people in ways that meet particular requirements
• A major update was announced for Little Kitty, Big City for the summer which will add new characters and parts of the city
• XSEED is helping to bring Milano's Odd Job Collection - a previously Japanese-exclusive PlayStation game - to the West to the first time in 2025
• Also due in 2025 is woodland survival game Winter Burrow
• Episodic puzzle adventure The Guardian of Nature was confirmed for Switch, but without a date: the first episode can be purchased on Steam now.

Women Led Games Showcase

• June 12 will see the release of Re:Fresh, a previously-available-on-PC 3D city rebuilder / walking sim
• August 1 has the launch of Wander Stars, a heavily anime-inspired turn based RPG that runs in episodes and involves creating attacks out of words (such as "Fire Jump Kick"): an expanded gameplay trailer was shown in the Latin American Games showcase later
• Coming soon to Switch among other consoles is Spilled, an oil spill cleanup game previously on PC
• Perfect Tides: Station to Station is an adventure game in the style of early 1990s PC games that will release in January of next year
• Due in 2026 are tavern sim and adventure hybrid Tavern Tale Stories: Dreamwalker and foraging game Out and About
• No date was given for Woodo, a game about childhood presented in the style of a wooden diorama

Latin American Games Showcase

• Horror platformer Chunky Jump will be out in the third quarter of this year (July -> September)
• Another horror platformer with a lot more violence, Shadow Sacrements: The Roots of Evil will be out in Q4.
• The Requiem of Shadows is an action game heavily inspired in gameplay and graphical style by The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening that is targeting next spring.
• Listed as targeting the fourth quarter of 2026 are adventure game Bogdan's Cross and anime-styled side scrolling action game Taios' Journey.
• Noir detective game The Shadow Syndicate, which offers non-violent and violent solutions to cases, will release sometime next year.
• No date was given for 4 player action "roguelike" Castlebound and Changer Seven, a character action game where the player character is an entire team of henshin heroes (think Power Rangers) who can be swapped between on the fly for battle combos.

Southeast Asian Games Showcase

• New DLC for action title Giga Bash is available now.
• Another "coming soon" is Upin and Ipin Universe, a co-op game starring a pair of twin toddlers who get up to mischief.
• June 26 will see the launch of an update for Cat Quest III called "Tavern Tales" that adds classic fights and party members, as well as the full release of critically acclaimed pixel art visual novel Until Then; a further update to Until Then is promised by end of year.
• Cooking-themed 3D action game Sedup! A Culinary Adventure is slated for Q4.
• A new trailer was shown for Coffee Talk Tokyo (2026).

Future Games Show (note: show was marred by technical issues)

• Unique co-op escape game How 2 Escape: Lost Submarine will release on June 26: one player is on the console and the second is on a smart device and has to relay instructions.
• The sole Switch 2 exclusive (as far as Switches are concerned) of the day was Call of the Elder Gods, a horror puzzle adventure coming soon that will feature Yuri "Spoiled The Reveal Of A Persona 4 Remake" Lowenthal in its voice cast.
• Action RPG Lost Eidolons: Call of the Witch was also announced as coming soon.
• Microids confirmed a September release for Agatha Christie: Death on the Nile.
• Side-scrolling exploration game Constance was shown, and it was later confirmed that the game would come to Switch 1 and 2 separately next year.
• Formula Legends attempts to retrace the history of open-wheeled racing in the F1 style, but with some different names: no date was given.

Australia / New Zealand Showcase (aka "Frosty Games Fest")

• Misc: A Tiny Tale (July 22) will star a small robot exploring what was called a "post-human world".
• Microvania, a "small experience" heavily inspired by Metroid, added Switch to its late 2025 release plans.

Additional announcements are expected tomorrow during presentations from Microsoft as well as the infamous (for its length) PC Gaming Show.

Switch and Siwtch 2 did have some representation at the annual Summer Game Fest event that just wrapped in Los Angeles. In addition to Mina the Hollower:

• Sonic Racing: Cross Worlds announced a September 25 release date and guest characters including Joker (Persona 5), Ichiban Kasuga (Like a Dragon 2020-), Hatsune Miku, and "Minecraft Steve". A Switch 2 version was also announced for a release date later than the Switch 1 version, with an upgrade path unlike Sonic x Shadow Generations.
• Voice acting regular Troy Baker picked up another gig in stylized first person shooter Mouse: PI for Hire this fall.
• Marvel: Cosmic Invasion announced two more playable characters of a total of 15, with She-Hulk and Rocket Raccoon on the roster.
• Annapurna will publish Lego Voyagers, a co-op exploration game in which the stars are two individual Lego pieces; the game will feature a Split Fiction-style friend pass for co-op.
• Also on the Lego tip is LEGO Party, a very Mario Party-coded party game with 60 minigames due this year: the game is developed by SMG Studio (Death Squared, Moving Out)
• Brownies (developer) and Bandai Namco announced action roguelike Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree for September 19 release
• The recently released Hitman: World of Assassination announced a new "elusive target" or temporarily available mission, which will involve Agent 47 having to eliminate LeChiffre - the villain of James Bond reboot Casino Royale, as portrayed by Mads Mikklesen.
• Street Fighter 6's third year of DLC was announced with Alex (Street Fighter III), Crimson Viper (IV), Ingrid (Capcom Fighting Evolution), and Sagat (original/SFII) all portrayed by All Elite Wrestling International Champion Kenny Omega in the trailer.
• In addition to Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Tribute was announced as the developer of Scott Pilgrim EX, a co-op brawler set in alternate universe Toronto that will launch next year.

As often happens, a Sony State of Play event did have some announcements for the Switch family.

After being included in a leak of NVIDIA games previously, a remastered version of Final Fantasy Tactics (1997/98, PlayStation) was shown for launch on September 30: Square Enix later confirmed that both Switch and Switch 2 would receive the game. The isometric strategy/RPG set in the Ivalice universe (Final Fantasy XII) would later have followups on the GBA and DS, but this is the first time the original will be on Nintendo platforms.

Also announced for Switch systems:

• Digital Eclipse's newest "kollection" will be their bloodiest one yet. Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection (2025, Switch 1 and 2) will assemble the first four numbered Mortal Kombat fighting games (1992-97) and the "Ultimate" version of 3 in multiple versions as part of one collection. Arcade and console versions were confirmed, along with the possibility of additional games.
• The IO Interactive-developed James Bond game, now known as "007 First Light" was shown along a 2026 release window: it was announced for Switch 2 in the April debut Direct.
• Another Direct announcement - Everybody's Golf Hot Shots - will release on September 5 and Pac-Man will be a playable golfer.
• The Game Kitchen and DotEmu announced a July 31 launch for Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound and confirmed that the creators of the soundtrack for the original NES trilogy - Keiji Yamagishi, Ryuichi Niita and Kaori Nakabai - would compose songs for the game's soyndteack.

Looking back at the last Downloads article I wrote on a system's launch week (March 2, 2017), the ratio of "games for new hotness" vs "games for old and busted" was more than 2:1, but that was across two consoles and one was a Wii U release of a Switch game. This week, the first of the Switch 2 era, doesn't have a ratio that skewed - but it's STILL more toward the original Switch. Because although there are 28 games (29 in Japan) for Switch 2 on launch day, there is no less than 40 releases for Switch 1 in North America and Europe, most of which would be from slopmongers.

You know the tune by now: Mario Kart World, Welcome Tour, Switch 2 upgrades for two of the good Zelda Switch games for free (with two of the not-good Zelda Switch games getting upgrades for a tenner or a NSO Expansion Pack sub), Fast Fusion, Hitman, Street Fighter 6, and the two dual-platform releases of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma (ten buck upgrade) and Deltarune (no upgrade path). Though I do want to know what exactly that new Picross from Jupiter is supposed to be based on.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: Namco's Super World Court was the last Archives release before the introduction of Archives 2 with Riiiiiiiiidge Racer.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE OUTSIDE JAPAN: I'm going to say "no" to that one.

The new Pokemon Legends game will come out around the anniversary of X and Y.

The Pokemon Company announced today that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will release globally on October 16. Editions will be available for Switch and Switch 2, and an upgrade pack will be available.

Accompanying the reveal was the announcement of a Pokemon Presents presentation that will air on July 22.

Nintendo has provided an update on the state of backward compatibility for Switch 1 games and apps for Switch 2.

Of 112 first party Switch releases, only one (the Labo VR kit) will not work with Switch 2 due to the kit being designed for the smaller screen of the original Switch. Of approximately 15,000 "partner" (3rd party) titles on Switch 1, approximately 65% are said to work without issue, while another 34% are "playable with issues".

Certain applications (including streaming apps Hulu, Crunchyroll, Niconico, and AbemaTV plus comic reader InkyPen) are identified as not working at all. Relatively small numbers of games are listed in .pdf files linked on the compatibility website, including Fortnite as a game that will be patched shortly after launch despite a Switch 2 version launching on day 1.

Nintendo has released more details on Switch 2-powered updates to the N64 app.

A video posted on Nintendo Today May 26 showed a comparison chart for three features being added to the N64 and Mature N64 applications on June 5. Both the Switch and Switch 2 will receive an option to remap controller buttons at emulator level, while the Switch 2 versions of the app will also get the rewind function and a CRT filter option.

Last week's shockingly successful launch of Fantasy Life i is looking to get that day 1 Switch 2 bump.

Level-5 have announced on the game's blog that a Switch 2 version of the RPG will be available on June 5. Purchasers of the Switch version will be able to upgrade for US$2.59 or €2.27, with digital versions costing $62.58 or €62.26.

The blog promises improvements to load times, framerate, and graphics. Comparison pictures between the two Switch versions are available at the blog linked above.

Bravely Default isn't the only Square RPG remake the Switch 2 will get in 2025.

As part of observations of the anniversary of Dragon Quest, Square Enix have announced a Switch 2 version of the HD-2D versions of Dragon Quest I and II. All versions will launch on October 30, and a collector's edition is available from the Square Enix online store for $149.99.

SE has also announced that the Switch 2 physical version will use a Game Key Card due to a 17GB download.

[Hopefully this is "get this out before the Switch 2" but... for some reason, I highly doubt that.]

The last time we had a Downloads article the week before a system launched was February 23, 2017 when there were a combined total of six games across two systems in North America and four in Europe. This week, with Switch 2 landing next week? North America has a 6x multiplier and Europe goes nearly 10x with its schedule - and Japan's in the 40s, which I couldn't check because of region locks. Goody.

Anyway, the last ones out the door before the big kahuna launches next week include the third Fuga: Melodies of Steel strategy / RPG from CyberConnect2, and based on previous games patching in a "story" button to keep the kids out of the cannon, this might be worth looking into. Playtonic (Friends) is publishing a cozy game in Cattle Country, and a couple of "Saturn Tribute" games in shooter Steam-Hearts and fighting game Advanced V.G.

Four games have been dropped into the Game Boy (Color) Switch Online library this evening.

• The Sword of Hope (1989/91) is a first person RPG originally developed by Kemco; its sequel The Sword of Hope II was released on the 3DS Virtual Console.
• Gradius: The Interstellar Assault (1991/92) is the 2nd game in Konami's side-scrolling space shooter series to release on the Game Boy: this represents the game's first ever re-release in North America.
• Kirby's Star Stacker (1997) is a puzzle game featuring Kirby and his friends from the Dark Matter series who have to be paired in order to clear stars from the game board.
• Survival Kids (1999) is the first game in a series of open-ended survival games from Konami which continued under the name "Lost In Blue" on the DS and Wii: a modern multiplayer take on the game will be a launch day title for Switch 2.

It hardly seems like this week is real, what with the appearance for all the world that Level-5's Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is coming out after an uncountable number of delays, several platform changes including apparently a Switch 2 edition, and the possibility that several acres of rainforest were burned down as a result of its production. In the event it IS delayed further, possibly due to them turfing Keiji Inafune, there's a remaster of former Vita game Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Battle Destiny and also a remaster of Onimusha 2.

The smaller front sees the console (including Switch) debut of Cookie Clicker - not making that up - and a pair of indie hit sequels in Monster Train 2 (roguelike deckbuilder: check) and a new Duck Detective game. Ys: Memories of Celceta is also available in Japan, though that might come west via... somebody in the next few months.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: A game based on the Kaiju Big Battel (sic) property, and an Archives title called "Nebulasray" (Nebula's Ray) that due to either licensing or programming costs doubles the regular Archives price.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE WITH NO JAPANESE KNOWLEDGE: It would appear so, especially as Hydlide II is already pretty much known.

Nintendo announced free updates for several Switch 1 games to support Switch 2, and the details have now been revealed.

A webpage which identified the games previously has updated with a release date - June 5, the Switch 2 launch day - and the nature of the improvements.

The updates and games they apply to are:

One of the earliest N64 games appears to be one of the last games for Switch Online before it gets the GameCube in three weeks.

Killer Instinct Gold (1996) was added to the N64 library tonight. The fighting game is a bespoke version of the arcade Killer Instinct 2, which added three new characters to the lineup and was the last console release in the franchise until a 2014 Xbox One release.

The Japanese library obtained Ridge Racer 64, added for the West earlier this year.

Pokemon Go has rolled out more changes to the raiding system.

An update today has added the ability to "RSVP" or schedule a time for participating in a raid battle. The signal includes an option to invite friends to participate.

This differs from a previous system of "EX Raids" in which a player would be invited at random to play a particularly challenging raid: this feature was depricated in 2020 as part of the game's pandemic adaptations.

NBC Universal's upfront had some surprisingly on-topic news for a Nintendo website: the name of the next Mario movie.

A press release for NBC Universal's "upfronts" mentioned "Super Mario World" in a slate of films that would stream on their Peacock service - NBC Universal being the parent company of Illumination, Nintendo's animation partner for the Mario movies.

"An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions."

Super Mario World is slated for release on April 3, hence its inclusion in a presentation for 2025-26 films and events.
