I’ve never used the CPP, and I beat RE: Revelations on Hell Mode just fine without it. However, I could see Metal Gear greatly benefiting from it. For those who have Luigi’s Mansion, I doubt Nintendo will support it, but do you think that game could benefit from CPP or did it handle pretty well? From the videos I’ve seen, it looks like some people struggle with the controls.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo 3DS XL Coming to All Regions This Year
« on: June 22, 2012, 02:56:45 AM »
I didn’t necessarily mean a revision as a replacement to the current model; although it’s hard to justify not getting the XL for $30 more, unless it’s just too big to carry around all the time, which I can understand. I just meant, the fact that they didn’t mention this at all during E3 or at their own specialized 3DS conference is quite unusual.

Miyamoto says: We’re working on a successor to 3DS, not necessarily a revision.  *bam* 3DS XL two weeks later.

Miyamoto says: Were looking at putting either Majora’s Mask or a follow up to A Link to the Past on 3DS, we’re not sure, we’re still “experimenting” a full year later.

Why is it that I still believe a completely new Zelda 3DS will be coming next year? Like I said before, I think Miyamoto was trying to throw everyone off their path at E3. And it’s now official, Nintendo direct is more important than E3. To think they had their own 3DS showcase, and didn’t even mention the revision. Is this just strange or is it Nintendo in desperation mode following E3’s dismal reception?

After I heard about this on the Famicast, I tried to find some SpotpassTV videos online, surprisingly to no avail. I don’t comprehend Japanese at all, but it would have been fun to watch anyway.

“I’ve played several, mostly by accident.”  I thought that was funny.

I can just picture Zack sleeping in bed, wakes up with a controller in his hand while playing a LEGO game. “Whoa, what kind of somnambulistic trickery is this?”

A lot of these statements about relative power are becoming confusing; especially comments like “minimum as powerful as 360”. This mainly stems from E3, where Nintendo didn’t show anything “next-gen”. It’s no longer a matter of Wii U’s HD capability, but whether it will be on par graphically with Sony and Microsoft’s next consoles. Essentially: will it get multiplatform games that are noticeably different?

Miyamoto even admitted Wii U most likely won’t be as powerful as its competitors. I don’t think anyone was really anticipating that anyway. When he says it’s about a balance of power and cost, this means two things. First, Nintendo has an image and a track record of offering a good value to its customers. Nintendo could put out a $400+ console, but then they alienate a large base that some of their games cater to. Not Kids necessarily, but it becomes a too expensive for “a Nintendo”. By comparison, $299 looks much more attractive. Secondly, Nintendo doesn’t want to take a loss on its console like Microsoft and Sony are willing to do. People joke about $599 USD, but in reality that was still $200 under the component cost. How many games would they have to sell, especially 1st-party, to make up the difference? The gamble it too risky, because if it doesn’t pay off, Nintendo either goes bankrupt, or won’t be able to finance new consoles or games. They would rather err on a sure bet that they can control. They are a business after all, and they have to make a profit for the shareholders. What Sony and Microsoft are doing could be compared to someone who goes out and purchases a lot of nice, new flashy things on a credit card that they can’t afford. And if everything eventually goes to hell, they still have the chance their “parents” could bail them out if it gets too dire. In Nintendo’s case they prefer to pay in cash; yeah, it might not be as flashy, but there is significantly less risk attached.

With that trench coat the main character was wearing it may be possible.  *Whips out GamePad* “Let’s deactivate these traffic lights.” That would be hilarious and surreal at the same time.

I would be kind of surprised if Watch Dogs didn’t come to Wii U, considering a lot of the city map and toolkit could be relegated to the bottom screen and have interactivity in some way; and hopefully not just because it’s there, but in some fun, meaningful way. The demo had a lot of smartphone stuff that looks like it would lend itself naturally to the GamePad. Yves Guillemot confirmed it for PS360, I don’t see why it shouldn’t be on Wii U. If Ubisoft thinks a game like ZombiU will sell on Wii U, I’m assuming that same demographic will also be interested in Watch Dogs. I just want it to turn out as good as everyone believes it will.
I just hope that if ZombiU has initially slow sales, that it doesn’t detrimentally tarnish 3rd-party’s perception of the console. I think Assassin’s Creed will sell well no matter what. Either way, Ubisoft has so many games on the console they don’t have to worry about getting burned (it’s not like they’re going to take back Just Dance 4). However, Ubisoft is one of the biggest offenders of shovelware on Wii. And I’ve been trying not to give into the negativity that Wii U will be substantially behind again, which I don’t think is even possible, unless the competition really wants to go bankrupt. Losing $200-300 per console for the first couple years of its life cycle isn’t a viable profit strategy. But for some reason people don’t understand why Nintendo can’t do this (because it’s suicide). I’ll take one quality game over 10 Party Babyz any day. 3rd-party just needs to realize, Nintendo games sell extremely well because they have a track record of excellence; so that when you purchase their games, you know they’re quality. If you throw a steaming pile on the shelf, and someone gets screwed out of $60, guess what, they’ll never buy your games again, and rightfully so. 3rd-partys that are on the fence are watching; I just pray that by March 31, the numbers look good.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Launch Titles Will Not Support Two GamePads
« on: June 15, 2012, 05:27:36 AM »
Maybe I should clarify, I was watching a video interview with Scott Moffitt Where he was showing the GamePad and was answering questions about Nintendo Land. When asked about how many could play, he stated up to six, but didn’t directly say Nintendo Land that had that capability; so I was probably wrong if Reggie is saying those games won’t be available right away. Here’s the video if you would like to analyze it.

Actually, Nintendo Land supports two GamePads for up to six players simultaneously. So the functionality will be there day one.

TalkBack / Re: Warren Spector on E3, Violence, and Epic Mickey
« on: June 15, 2012, 04:20:57 AM »
Violence has been in video games since they have been around. Take Contra on NES for example, that game is technically violent, but not graphic to the point you wouldn’t want a child to play it. Violence in games is appropriate for adults, but it’s targeted at teens because that’s the market; not all, but a good portion. Games don’t need censorship. I think what Warren Spector is talking about, is how a lot of new games are specifically built around being violent instead of introducing new types of gameplay, or offering something unique.  Why should developers stop making these violent games when millions of people are buying them? I’m sure there were lots of new IP’s introduced this year that aren’t violent, but look at The Last of Us, Beyond: Two souls, Watch Dogs, and ZombiU; the gameplay is built around violence. There’s nothing wrong with that, in fact I’ll probably be picking at least one of them up. Nintendo creates games that max out at what, E10+? (Who knows, maybe Link will be able to impale and sever limbs in the next Zelda, that would freshen it up right?) There’s a market for that, and a level of creativity that doesn’t require extreme violence or 7-second long beeps of The Last of Us demo being played on television (I honestly thought something went wrong with the demonstration). But there is a market for that as a well, and PS3 owners demand games like that. At the end of the day it’s about the paycheck, but it would be nice to see some of these great developers minds show us something more than how realistic they can make a shotgun blast to the face look. One of my all-time favorite games is Resident Evil: 4, which is pretty gory. I played it because it was fun, not because it was violent. But it would make me uncomfortable to let other people, like my family, see me playing a game that was so graphic.

I just looked it up and Aonuma sent out a Swapnote this past February saying: "Did you enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D? Thanks to everyone, the Legend of Zelda series had a very happy 25th anniversary. I hope you're looking forward to new Legend of Zelda games."
That would be a strange thing to do if they didn’t already plan of making a new title.

Are they talking about a remake in addition to a new game? Skyward Sword was finished over a year ago and I’m pretty sure Aonuma said they wanted make a new game before another remake. However, who knows what team is actually handling the game. If it’s a remake, it’s more likely a cooperative effort, like what they did with Grezzo for OoT. It’s strange how Miyamoto used the word “experiments”; a whole year is a long time just to be performing experiments. I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but if they wanted to get MM on 3DS, they could have already done it. I wonder what the development cycle for OoT was? Obviously Miyamoto knows more than he’s leading on, but for some reason I feel like he’s trying to throw people off the track of what’s really happening at Nintendo. From the tone of the interview it seems like they haven’t even started making whichever game it is they want to make.

I can understand people not wanting the console to look the same, but are people really going to just see the white box separate from the GamePad and assume it’s the same as Wii? “Hmm… I don’t seem to remember my current Wii having a controller with a six-inch screen in it, better Google this. Oh, it’s a new console.” I think a lot of confusion will subside once we see advertisements. Nintendo needs to plaster the word New everywhere. “This is a completely new console with a new controller, and new games, with new types of gameplay. Did we mention it’s new?” They also need to push word like “Next-generation”, “future”, “never been done before”, etc. Nintendo needs to do this even before the console even launces; showing the release date reiterates that it’s so new it’s not even available yet. Also, the price alone will clearly differentiate it from Wii. As well, time has not stood still for the past 6 years, lots of kids have grown up on Wii, who aren’t kids anymore; and there is always a new generation moving into gaming. I’m assuming most of us here started playing games as kids, and have continued that into adulthood, and are now introducing Nintendo’s beloved franchises to their own kids. Nintendo is offering an awesome gaming console, and I remember back to when 3DS was “doomed”, and it’s now outpacing DS sales. Let’s not underestimate Nintendo months before we can actually play/use Wii U.

Ah, thanks Neal. That’s why any video I saw was of the rep demoing it.  Ubisoft is really being quiet with this one. I only hope that means something special is being integrated. For instance, maybe controlling the ship by tilting the GamePad and aiming with the thumb-sticks; who knows?

I was wondering; will there be any Assassin’s Creed III impressions? There was a Wii U demo with the GamePad on the show floor. Maybe you’ll be covering this in an upcoming podcast. Or maybe I just missed it in the other podcasts.

You guys have done some great work; and the quality of your NWRExclusive videos is unmatched. Thanks for bringing us a taste of what the future holds.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: People Need To Stop Bitching
« on: June 09, 2012, 05:01:38 PM »
What if Nintendo hadn’t announced Luigi’s Mansion and Paper Mario last year? What if nobody was expecting Pikmin 3, NSMB 2, and NSMBU? Do you think this year’s conference would have been better accepted? Yeah, last year’s Nintendo conference would have sucked without some of these 3DS titles or a SSB tease, but it wouldn’t have hurt SMB3DL, MK7, or Skyward Sword sales. The main problem is Nintendo announced these titles too early and now people are just underwhelmed because they already knew about these games; which is exactly what Nintendo didn’t do this year. They could have shown a huge sizzle reel of upcoming games that won’t be out for another year or two, but then nobody will give a **** when the game is officially shown and dated for release; which is exactly what happed this year. Personally, I don’t want to be teased with “Preorder the game now so you can play in holiday 2013!” Almost everything shown this year will be out this year or very soon following, I like that method. Aliens won’t be out until February anyway, a lot of games are being pushed out, so to expect huge devotion from 3rd party months before the Wii U launch, like Ubisoft is doing, is unrealistic considering finalized dev-kits have only been available for a few months.

Wii U isn’t even for sale yet, you can’t even buy it for months, but let’s all be pissed off now about a lack of games. Because, of course, what was shown at E3 is the definitive game announcement for the next 6 years of the console. When I own a Wii U in five months, I’ll play it, than wait another 6 months for E3 2013. If they don’t have anything to blow me away (everything they didn’t show this year); then I can legitimately say Nintendo has underperformed. I believe disagreement is healthy, but let’s not judge Nintendo too harshly, prematurely.

TalkBack / Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2 Gameplay Footage with Audio
« on: June 08, 2012, 02:58:08 PM »
I really hope that New Super Mario Bros. U will have different art styles in the different worlds. When they showed it on stage, there was a Van Gough style Boo’s house level, but that was not on the show floor. That’s certainly a step in the right direction, or should I say triple-jump in the right direction. One of the main complaints of the first game was bland and generic backgrounds. Just keep Mario and his gameplay the same, but change the world he’s in. Nintendo is probably withholding info on Bowser, Peach, and the koopalings, until closer to launch; no use in laying all your Hanafuda down months in advance.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RFN at E3: Day 2 (3DS and 3rd-Party Games)
« on: June 07, 2012, 08:28:57 PM »
I’ve thought this for a while: Wii Remote Plus will be packaged in with the Wii U hardware. Nintendo wants to make sure everyone has it day one. Only Nintendo can 100% confirm this. That’s the rule, if not everyone has it; you can’t develop games utilizing that technology, which is why Motion Plus wasn’t developed for. The same attitude for Smart Glass: you can’t develop a game that requires the consumer to own peripheral tech (especially a tablet). Building on that, Wii U will support 2 GamePads; so it will be interesting to see how Nintendo sells them separately, along with the Wii U Pro controller and how developers will make games around that (I think a lot of that functionality will be based on online multiplayer [2 gamepads, same game]).  My biggest question still remains: How will multiplayer-heavy games like Rayman Legends be played single player (one person can’t use the control stick, buttons, and the touchscreen simultaniously)?

I think Nintendo Land will have to be directly on the hardware. Isn’t it supposed to function somewhat like Mii Plaza, or is that what the home screen is for? That’s what I’m confused about; how do Nintendo Land and Miiverse function together?
