Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Labo VR: How the hell is it this good?
« on: April 12, 2019, 09:59:20 PM »
Granted I've only played a few minigames and haven't even built the Blaster yet...but what the hell? How does a 720p 60Hz screen pull this off so damn well? It's no PSVR or Vive...but honestly, it's pretty amazing. There definitely needs to be a head strap attachment to really enjoy Mario Odyssey and Zelda when those DLCs are available, because I'm sure it will get tiring after a while...but seriously, I thought this was going to be a joke, but it's definitely not.

General Chat / I noticed a thing and put it on Reddit...

Can't believe it took me over 12 years to notice the little clasp on the Wiimote strap looks like a tiny Wii.

...this is actually my second time doing this. The first time was about 20 years ago but I wasn't nearly as patient and just rushed it with plywood and a big CRT, didn't realize it wouldn't fit through my doorway, got angry and demolished it. This time, I used a template (original Mortal Kombat cabinet - though it is 5" wider to accommodate for the LCD), took my time, made sure it would fit through the front door, etc. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Not counting the laptop that's inside it (I've had it for a little over 6 years), I spent about $140 on wood (though some of that was due to doing some trial and error - only needed to spend about $85 really) and other hardware. The buttons and joysticks cost about $90 with shipping, but that's because I was impatient and miscounted at first - should have been about $70 - $75. The 32" 1080 LCD (this makes 4:3 games display at just slightly larger than they did on their original 25" CRTs) was $160, and I already had the sound bar too, but I think I paid about $60 for that a few years ago. T-molding was $20, acrylic (for the yet not-completed marquee) was about $18 I think, same for the glass overlay/bezel. Probably spent about $50 on paint and supplies - would have been much easier and cheaper if I had a power sprayer. This was definitely the most time-consuming part. MAME is free obviously and so are the ROMs (of course these are for...historical and archival purpose). GLSL settings in MAME make the games *almost* look like their running on an original LCD ("pincushion" effect, scanlines, etc.). For now I've gone with a Mortal Kombat 3/4 control layout, though the top of the control panel is removable and I plan on making a 4-player/3-button panel for TMNT, X-Men, The Simpsons, Blitz, NBA Jam, etc. as well, in the next month or so. Anyway, here are some pics. When I actually make a marquee (or order one, I have enough acrylic to make/order 3 different ones) or make the new control panel I'll post updates. It was definitely a labor of love, and I learned a few things that would help should I ever decide to do this again. I could easily knock out another one in a single day knowing what I know now.

Just showing off how awesome GLSL can make your games look.

The soundbar just happened to be the *exact* same width as the 32" LCD's frame.

Here's what I'm using until tomorrow...it runs *nearly* everything at full speed, but a Core i5 9600K and all the components are coming from Amazon tomorrow, then it will be perfect.

Custom bezels make the games look even more authentic, or at least eliminate the extra blackness from using a 16:9 screen...

...especially when using a "monitor bezel" - from a foot or so away you'd think it was an original arcade CRT.

I'll also be running Dolphin emulator (GameCube/Wii), CEMU (Wii U), PCSX2 (PS2), etc. My son and I played Super Smash Bros. Melee on it, that was pretty awesome. Yes I cross-posted. That forum doesn't get enough love.

I think that's pretty cool. I won't buy it, but it's cool. Still waiting for Rockstar to announce GTA V and Capcom to announce RE2.

Just trying to share the work of these dudes. They put out a new video every week, and are criminally under-viewed.

General Gaming / Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold 90 million copies.
« on: March 09, 2018, 10:49:49 PM »
I feel like it deserves a thread. It's the 3rd highest selling game of all time now - behind Tetris and Minecraft. I've owned this game for 3 years...never once played it though. I was just astonished when I looked it up earlier today to see if it had passed Wii Sports yet. Yes it has.

Nintendo World Report has a whole lot of forum members in their stable, and most of them have been around for a long time. Entry after post, ideas get worn out, and the OP starts to feel stale.

What Nintendo World Report forum member do you think needs a reboot? Where do you think their parents need to start over and take raising their child in a new direction?

...so, they don't advertise it, but Bright House will sign up new customers for 100 Mbps internet for $35/mo + tax, or 200 Mbps for $45/mo + tax. I was paying a ridiculous price (like $170, $185 after taxes and fees) for 100 Mbps, a couple DVRs, digital converters and basic cable. So I did the online chat with them, told them I wanted the deal and they gave it to me. Got rid of my cable service and only use PlayStation Vue now. I get all the channels I already had (except for NBC, CBS, and ABC, but I *do* get ABC and NBC On Demand), doubled my internet speed to 200 Mbps, and save $90/mo, will save $110/mo when I switch to the $30 plan. If you have Bright House, you should do the same - or of they have it your area you should still do the same, unless you can get a cheaper price for internet. PlayStation Vue is awesome, you can have 5 simultaneous logins, and on mobile you can use a fake GPS app to make it seem like you're at home (they base where you are on where the device you sign up with was last connected), so you can watch it anywhere that you have internet.

General Gaming / Is Xbox Microsoft's worst console ever?
« on: February 07, 2016, 11:07:39 AM »
Eh, why the hell not.

Anyway, to answer my own question: yes. It had all the power to make some really impressive-looking games (see Chronicles of Riddick - absolutely amazing for its time), but it was a gigantic, heavy box and no one really had any faith in Microsoft at the time. If the GTA series wasn't exclusive to Sony for as long as it was though, Xbox probably would have sold a lot better.

...it's almost 2:00 am, and I just got back from seeing it for the 3rd time (this time in IMAX 3D, woohoo!), so I'm too tired to get into any discussion...but this topic needs to be made. However...

...if you don't want to see any Star Wars Episode VII spoilers, then get out of this thread, now!

There - fair warning has been given, so lets get to discussing the movie freely!

Nintendo Gaming / ...aaaand there's a Wii U emulator now.

Haven't tried it. Apparently runs incredibly slowly (not surprising), I'm sure compatibility is not good, it'll be hard to get your games ripped to use, no sound, no Wii U Gamepad support etc, etc.

Still, pretty cool.
