Water Spilled on the MacBook Air
« on: May 23, 2012, 12:23:19 AM »
last night my daughter spilled some water on her new MacBook Air. Now it no working. It wont power on.
I have just immersed the thing in a sealed containder of uncooked rice to see if that will dry it out in a couple of days. Any other suggestions? I am not holding my breath.
I have already called the Apple store and they advised to book a diagnostic appointemnt (after trying the rice trick which they did not officially endorse, of course). They indicated the likely repair bill could be in the hundreds.
In the immortal words of Jar Jar Binks, any help here would be hot.
Anyone? Brandogg?

Jeez, dude. Was it on when the water was spilled? If so, you may be past repair.

The only thing i can suggest is a warm dry environment (like an airing cupboard, where the boiler is etc) and leave it there for a few days. Past that no idea.

A couple days in a dry cupboard isn't going to cut it. Assuming the components are still viable, the computer needs to be disassembled so every inch of it can be dried out especially with something as compact as an air book. I wouldn't do this unless it is also out of warranty and you are confident in your own skills. A couple hundred to Apple is going to be a lot cheaper and they do good work.

Worst thing you can do is try to turn on the MacBook once it turns off. If it was pure water, then most of the time just let it dry on it's own and you'll be fine, but if there was anything in it (like if it was tap water), then you're potentially screwed.

Good news, we brought it into the Apple store, they tested it for about half an hour, concluded it was not the water spill but some inherent flaw, and replaced it. My daughter's brimming tears may have helped.
sorry it took so long to update

Yeah sounds suspect. I spilt a beer on my sister's Macbook Pro and it was fine.

A few years ago a friend of mine VOMITED on my iBook. It needed a new keyboard but was otherwise fine.
