General Chat / Game Over: One final rant...
« on: January 24, 2009, 06:32:21 PM »
Okay, it's time to get something off my chest that is long past due.  Nintendo World Report is dying.

Or should I say, has been dying for a while now, and I feel it has been getting even worse over the past year.   Increasing bias and anti-Nintendo sentiment run free without consequence.  For example, in the recently-locked Final Fantasy topic, Ian derailed the thread with random trolls on the Wii's 3rd party support even though it had absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand (which in fact had to do with the financial and managing issues FFXIII was facing) AND arguing that we were only making such claims because we were fanboys and wanted the game on the Wii.  Classy.  Pale's response?  To consider Deg and myself the trolls for reprobating Ian on his derailment, and then closing the topic.  Sounds like bias to me.  Well, whatever.  I shook that off just like the countless other times Ian has gotten away with it.  No skin off my back.

Fast-forward to today.  Mario has been perma-banned by Pale.  Meanwhile, canker sore Ian still roams free.  Why?  Rants with opinions that change based on just what Ninty is doing.  Rants that complain about a single Mario-focused game in the face of a dozen other original games.  Rants that complain about Ninty's focus on casual games when they currently make up only 20% of Ninty's published Wii titles.  Can you actually find a productive post where Ian actually sat down in a topic with us and discussed something positively about a specific game?  Does no one find it odd that he tends to stay out of topics that bring tidings of good news about Ninty or that completely destroy one his prior rants?  Instead Mario is perma-banned for "personal attacks" that were most likely precipitated by Mario's frustration over getting constant warnings for stupid things while others get away with much worse.  It's sad to see a TRUE Nintendo fan banned over one who is clearly not, regardless of the circumstances.  Now I don’t mean to put the spotlight just on Pale, as this is only an example that illustrates my point and opened my eyes to what I should have seen for a while now.

I love games, I love talking about games, and I love discussing games with other people.  What I don't love is having threads derailed with random angst (such as the case where a certain mod plopped into the Wii Sales Thread only to say that the Wii was only selling to casuals and grandmas).  I don't love having to pussyfoot around mods with obvious biases towards HD gaming.  If I did, I'd post at GAF more.  But at least GAF has the excuse of not being Nintendo-focused.  I don't love game discussion threads being abandoned in favor of threads groaning about how casual games are killing gaming and the embarrassingly pointless Staff Blog board (which was created solely so the staff could supplement their bias even more).  That was what was so magical about Planet Gamecube back in the day; excluding Ian, everyone participated in game discussion and rants were few and far-between.  Over time, it was clear that the oasis was beginning to dry up.  First was the PSP fiasco, where mods like Rick and Dragona (the others, you know who you are) were clearly PSP-biased and made their points clear that they thought the DS would flop.  Great atmosphere that built up, guys.

Then came this generation.  I don't know if it was the result of the HD war, the change of NWR staff, just a lack of interest in games in general, or an amalgamation of the three and others, but the topics really do show.  Talkback news is usually late. Game-specific topics are full of information posts with little actual insight or discussion from other posters.  The topics with the most posts and discussion come from those that aren't even really game-specific, be it arguments about sales, "casual games", third party support, or any other drama-charged groanfest.  And all these topics do is destroy bonds between posters that should instead be tightening through enjoyable discussion.  From someone who wants nothing more than to see everyone enjoying positive discussion about upcoming games, it's really depressing to see how the site has crumbled, and it's clear to see why Mario (and others before him) gave up the ghost.  Why bother putting effort into a post when it's bound to be derailed by a third party support monologue?  Why bother putting effort into a post when no one even cares anymore?

Am I being too harsh?  Yeaaaano.  I'm not.  It shouldn't be too much to expect a Nintendo-oriented site to be slightly Nintendo-biased.  But no, I'm only seeing the opposite these days.  So I'm sick of it.  It's not fun anymore.  Talking about games here is no longer fun.  I really wish I could force myself to keep doing it, but I can't; the atmosphere is too suffocating.  I tried my best to salvage what I could, but ended up staining my own hands with the hypocrisy of adding to the very rants I wished to destroy.

And it's painful because I really do like most of you, and wish I could have gotten closer to those I'm on bad terms with.  It's been a fun 7+ years, and I thank all of you for all the (mostly) positive experiences, and wish all of you the best of luck in your respective lives.  For those of you that DO still try to keep positive game discussion alive, I also wish you luck here at NWR.  Perhaps you guys can bring the forums back to its former glory where I failed.  Oh wait, Silks is the Director now, never mind.

If anyone wants to get a hold of me for some reason, my email is Splush23 @msn.com and you can usually find me on MSN Messenger in some form.  There are still a bunch of you I haven’t played online with, so hopefully we can fix that in the future.

One last thing:  Remember why you picked up the controller in the first place.  Remember why even after all these years you still hold it in your hands.  Cherish the games you like and don't let anyone tell you different.  And never, EVER, let the Nintendo fan in you die.  ^_^

Best regards,
Bill

I feel even after so many years (what's it been, going on 6 years now?) we don't really know much about each other...I must fix this RIGHT NOW!  So post exactly what you are wearing as you read this message!  NO CHEATING!  I swear if anyone says they are naked when they aren't then I'll research your IP and come to your house and throw styrofoam peanuts at you...I WILL!  Unless you are really naked...Then that'd just be awkward, so please don't say that...Oh God, now everyone is going to be naked...

EXCEPT ME!  I'm wearing a t-shirt and boxers (plaid boxers!)

Is this normal for me at this time of day (1 AM)?  It is!  Walking around in boxers is fantastic!  Walking around in briefs not so fantastic!  I already forgot the point of this....Oh yeah, so what are you wearing right this second!?  I must know and I'll save this in my data right next to all your other personal infothxkbye

He locked the Final Fantasy thread because he has sour grapes over it being on PS3 and not on Wii!  Just ask him!  He'll probably deny it, though, just like the troll/fanboy/bucket hat he is!  So immature!

Okay this isn't a poll if you give a description and explain why you like a pie... :@

My favorite pie is PUMPKIN PIE!  It was the first pie I remember ever eating, and it tastes like, I dunno, pumpkin...:@

What?  Okay, pumpkin pie doesn't really taste like pumpkin, pumpkin tastes like ASS by itself...But pumpkin pie is something I have always loved eating, especially with whipped cream or ice cream... =O

Problem is, no one really eats pumpkin pie except around Thanksgiving so I have to wait until then to have some...WHY ISN'T THANKSGIVING ONCE A MONTH!?

Pie, pie, pie...

I know it's really early to be making a topic on this, but the trailer that was shown at Ninty's October Conference has been released to the public...

Directfeed Download
YouTube Trailer

Looks like a 3D Tales game, which means it looks nice...Good music, too (though old)... =)

Main character appears to be by himself to start off with (of course, they could just have hidden the other characters for now), and he utilizes a mix of swordplay and hand-to-hand styles...

(Oh, and Mothership is obviously not the title, nor the temporary title...I just felt like calling it that since it has no other name...)

Nintendo Gaming / Another Code: R, Kioku no Tobira
« on: October 02, 2008, 10:03:42 AM »
Literally translated as "R, The Door of Memories," CING has returned and blessed us with a Wii sequel to the fantastic DS game (known as Trace Memory in the U.S.)!  If you don't know what Trace Memory/Another Code is, then you are BANNED from NWR until you go and play it...

We will be controlling Ashley once again in a 3D environment, this time with camera set down behind the back instead of a bird's-eye view like the original.  Character models and backgrounds have a stylistic shaded approach, which is particularly nice on the eyes.  We will also most likely be using the Wiimote to manipulate objects in puzzles, and the DTS looks to be returning yet again.

MORE INFO AS SOON AS I CAN GET MY GRUBBY HANDS ON IT!

________________________________________________
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So it appears Ninty's retailer conference could be is happening 8 days earlier than last year's...
Even though last year had some rather tasty tidbits, let's keep expectations and speculation realistic, okay?
And just as a refresher, here's all the major goodies from last year:
  • Monster Hunter 3 Wii Exclusive
  • Sonic in Smash Brothers Brawl
  • Wii Fit presentation
  • Mario Kart Wii revealed to have bikes and to include wheel
  • WiiWare details - FFCC, Pokemon Ranch, Star Soldier R, etc. revealed
  • Mario Baseball Wii, Fire Emblem DS
~~~~~~

I see a Wii Music presentation, a Pikmin 3 reveal, and another big exclusive 3rd party game (I'll go with Square-Enix) to be likely, with a smattering of smaller Wii/DS title revelations...

General Gaming / Fable II
« on: August 28, 2008, 08:15:46 PM »
Alright, who is going to dive back into the Molyneux hype-machine and give this sequel a go?  If you preorder(ed) you'll get a DLC code to download "Pub Games," which will allow you to try and earn gold and items that you can transfer to your character once the game releases...

There are three games:  Fortune's Tower (where you build a "tower" of cards, hoping that you don't have cards of the same number touch each other), Keystone (basically Roulette), and Spinnerbox (Slots)...It's a pretty cool bonus, and a nifty way to promote the game, but my luck is pretty damn awful without cheating, tee hee...

I'll rework this OP with a detailed run-down of the game later, but for now I don't feel like it... :tpg:

ANOTHER Overlord game!  Too much awesome for me to handle after finding out about the upcoming Wii version!  Unlike the more fantasy/fairy tale-inspired Wii version, however, this game will have a more "realistic" backdrop (in a very loose sense, looking at the screens), with the story focused around a Romanesque empire taking over the world...Minions will have more varied abilities, such as being able to mount creatures and use other tools of war...

Story

The moon, which holds an incredible power that feeds the planet, has been captured and controlled by the Order of Chains (led by Leonid, or the Dreadknight, who desires to become a god).  However, a lot of people don't like this, considering it's killing the planet and has released foul creatures everywhere.  Thankfully for them, a group of people have stood up against the Order: the Liberation Army.  Led by a man named Sigmund, he is supposedly the only person who can release the moon from its chains.  The story begins in a prison: a young flute player by the name of Capell has been captured by mistake as he happens to look identical to the Liberation Army leader.

Gameplay
  • Unlike most JRPGs, there are no transitions between field exploration and battles.  If you run into an enemy on the field, you battle it out like an ARPG, only having three other party members in tow at a time.  The action never stops, even when you go into your menu, so it's best to finish your battle and find a safe place to make camp before you do!
  • Character relationships and interaction play a very big part of this game.  You can have a specific character join you when exploring towns, and depending on who is with you, the dialogue or events can change.  Each character has a specific personality and list of traits.  If you go out of your way to appeal to them, your relationship with them will increase.
  • Each character also has a "job class" that affects the types of skills they can learn.
  • A - Normal Attack (Normal and Strong attacks can be mixed together to form combos)
  • B - Strong Attack (Always the final blow in a combo)
  • RT - Active/Passive Mode (when you enter Active Mode, you draw your blade and your other party members will as well)
  • LT - Reflect Drive (A defensive maneuver, that, when used right as your enemy attacks, will reflect the blow back onto them, opening them to attack)
  • X/Y - Battle Skills (Over the course of the game, you will acquire magical attacks that you can set to these buttons.  They use MP.)
  • RB - Connect Action (You can also set Battle Skills to your party members.  Connect Action allows you to connect to a party member and utilize their attacks from afar without affecting your own movement and normal attacks.
  • When in battle, there are many tactics that you can apply to your party members.  You can set them to attack a single enemy, split up to attack, stay back, concentrate on combos, conserve MP, or just attack freely
  • As you play through the game, you will come across scripted events called Situation Battles.  These tend to be high-tension events that require tactical thinking on the part of the player.
  • Another interesting addition to the free-roaming gameplay is the importance of the senses.  Not only is visual acuity important, but so is sound and smell.  If you make a loud noise or use an item that has a potent smell, you could attract enemies to your position.
