Podcast Discussion / Episode 838: More Like Self-Sabotage
« on: September 03, 2023, 03:46:41 PM »

Much like this show...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64710/episode-838-more-like-self-sabotage

This week we start by reviewing the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct. Honestly, it showed more than we needed to see, but we did get info about Nintendo and more of their weird online stuff. 15 minute direct? Hour long segment. RFN Magic.

After a break, we take on New Business. Guillaume is playing Sea of Stars, and while some reviews are glowing, he isn't feeling the magic. He's also playing the Dimension Shellshock DLC of TMNT Shredder's Revenge, but the expectation that you would play this fresh on the heels of the main game are causing some struggles. Jon finally finished Cyberpunk 2077, also in anticipation of upcoming DLC, and paid for the privilege of getting to play Starfield a few days early - so he could talk about it with you. James completed the first "game" in .hack//G.U. Last Recode, and can now explain the experience of moving between titles in what was an anthology series. Lastly, Greg is has been playing Excitebike 64 - a very late N64 game, now available on the Nintendo Switch Online with Expansion. He also finally got around to Kirby Star Allies.

As always, email us, please.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 837: Donald Sutherland Is a Sexual Being
« on: August 27, 2023, 04:27:00 PM »

A live revelation.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64647/episode-837-donald-sutherland-is-a-sexual-being

James is back, and he has a bunch of Muppets to put in order.

This week he starts New Business with a look at .hack//GU Last Recode, a remaster/collection of the second set of PS2 .hack JRPGs. It was a bold move to make an anime AND multiple PS2 games about a character that is committed to reminding you how much he sucks. Jon doesn't have a lot to talk about, so instead he talks about the trailer for Thank Goodness You’re Here!

This is 12 out of 10 British Content Units (BCU). Greg has finished The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and is now looking forward to upcoming Nintendo Switch Online games Excitebike 64 and another Pokémon Stadium. Gui is exploring an abandoned home as a tiny leader of other tiny critters... no it's not Pikmin, it's Tinykin! He's also trying to unravel the history of a famous actress in Immortality. James wraps back around and talks about the Meow Wolf Convergence Station, an "immersive art" instillation in Denver that transports visitors to a dimensional crossroad and hosts a very expansive AR game.

After the break, its time for serious email only. You can be serious here. This week, we talk seriously about Charles Martinet's departure from his role as Mario and what being a "brand ambassador" actually means.

Not gonna lie...RFN feels like The Muppet Movie sometimes.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64603/episode-836-persons-of-lordly-caliber-waka-waka-waka

James is out this week, which means Gui assumes the hosting chair with Greg and Jon along for the ride. The result is a rich and nuanced discussion that examines serious topics in an earnest effort to engage the audience on several different levels. Oh wait...*checks notes*...that never happened. What you get instead is the expected two hours of nonsense and tomfoolery that only Radio Free Nintendo can provide.

New Business sees Greg dipping into his retro backlog as he plays through The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and we discuss how it compares to other games in the series. Jon gives some updated thoughts on Vampire Survivors, newly released on Switch and ready to accompany you on your next trip to the graveyard. Gui, who is now officially the "first-person shooter guy" on the podcast, discusses the recent remaster of Quake 2 and the equally brocore Pikmin 2. He's hunger striking for a Pikmin FPS that may never come, so keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

This week's Listener Mail covers which games we like to simply walk around in, which Muppet each person on RFN would be, and what we think the form factor and announce/release dates will be for the next Nintendo system. If you want to be Muppetized, feel free to karate chop an email over here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 835: Horus vs. Horace
« on: August 13, 2023, 11:25:13 AM »

Homonyms and mythonyms.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64541/episode-835-horus-vs-horace

We're preparing for RFN season 6, five years into season 5.

First order of business: Fixing the RSS feed... yeah, it's busted again.Second order of business: A mascot.

Should we spend efforts coming up with a new plan to boost listeners? What about some new music to start the show? How about redesigned art?

No. A mascot.

This week, this becomes something of a rolling debate, so submit your votes.

New Business this week: Gui and James are still in Pikmin 4, but Gui is also looking at Pikmin 1+2 HD. Lastly, he's looking at cooking-based story game Venba. Jon is playing the Genesis version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts. This turns into a long, unfocused, conversation on weird console/micro-computer ports. Come for the guy in his boxers, stay for the Amstrad CPC. Greg has impressions on the demo of Patrick's Parabox (Disclaimer: friend-of-the-show Syrenne has involvement in the game), and he actually beat Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble.

Listener Mail this week has two questions. The first asks what games were "perfect" for their system, and the second is the quest for a mascot. You can vote here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 834: Reset the Weeks Since Showpony Clock
« on: August 06, 2023, 11:21:23 AM »

Jon and Horace both return this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64453/episode-834-reset-the-weeks-since-showpony-clock

Jon triumphantly walks back into our lives after a two week absence.Horace sheepishly trots back into our lives after a single week absence.

Who is the real ironhorse here?

Surprise! James bought Pikmin 4. Oh, and he's also literally played all of it in about 5 days. Never really much of a Pikmin fan, it turns out 4 is a pretty good way to recuperate after you injure yourself. Again.

Jon finished Final Fantasy XVI and finally got around to watching The Super Mario Bros. Movie now that its hit The 'Cock.

Speaking of making a billion dollars, we also divert to talk briefly about Nintendo's latest quarterly numbers - especially the abject failure that is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Imagine not even managing to sell 20m units in 6 weeks. What an embarrassment.

New Business wraps with Greg's impressions of Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. All the music, none of the Square Enix weirdness. Well, less of the Square Enix weirdness.

Listener Mail this week answers two related questions: should I future-proof my gaming library physically or digitally AND what games will launch the next Nintendo system? You can send us your unanswerable riddles here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 831: Waluigi Will (Not) Be Normalized
« on: July 16, 2023, 07:33:58 PM »

"Waluigi containment is a top priority for this government."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64271/episode-831-waluigi-will-not-be-normalized

Keeping it brief, because I'm still recovering from writing this bullshit.

New Business:

  • Greg and Gui have the latest round of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC. It's time to see what Vancouver is up to.
  • Gui has found another belt-scroller in Fight'N Rage, which is a pretty sick name.
  • Jon is wrapping-up Final Fantasy XVI.
  • Greg has wrapped Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
  • Lastly, a conversation on Kid Icarus Uprising and Star Fox Command's control accessibility.

Listener Mail:

  • Fake or Real: Whatever the hell is going on at Limited Run Games.
  • Buying Everybody 1-2 Switch! as an investment is a bad idea.
  • Will Nintendo make the mistake of including Waluigi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder?
  • Emails: Go here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 830: The PokéLore Hole
« on: July 09, 2023, 11:45:44 AM »

We have a two hour origin story on Nurse Joy of Lavender Town waiting for you.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64248/episode-830-the-pokelore-hole

This week we lead the show with Listener Mail. Our plan is to live the maximum degree of Pokémon. Failing that, and we do, we explore games that we are simply physically incapable of not failing. Lastly, we are for sale. Send payments here.

After a break, we hit New Business. PLAY GHOST TRICK! James and Greg did. It will only require 10 hours. Your life will be forever changed. Gui is still working through Tears of the Kingdom (no spoilers) and weird Zelda-like Crusader of Centy. Jon is still playing Final Fantasy XVI and arcade racer Inertial Drift.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 829: Single-Use Ultrahand
« on: July 02, 2023, 12:40:14 PM »

There's no cleaning this bad boy.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64157/episode-829-single-use-ultrahand

Everybody 1-2 Switch lets you show Horace your pony, and it also managed to disrupt yet another episode of Radio Free Nintendo. It's pretty much a given that Horace will make an appearance in any given episode of the show, and this week he just keeps coming back.

Yet, he isn't the most alarming thing mentioned this week.

HOWEVER the horror comes a bit later. We start the show with a pretty exhaustive look at the Pikmin 4 demo. Gui has cleared it, and Greg is a bit in. James got to see a menu. Jon is a Pikmin, so his opinion is too biased. There was also a Pikmin Bloom promo to push the demo, and also a Niantic layoff to "refocus" on Pokémon Go. James has been playing Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon and Netflix's other questionable games. After a break, Jon has extensive impressions of Final Fantasy XVI: There's no Mandatory Movie to Watch.

We asked for email and you all answered! A fresh delivery to our inbox gave us two emails to answer this week: a chance to merge any two Nintendo franchises and a round of Metacritic Golf.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 828: The Big Cheesing Honor System
« on: June 24, 2023, 02:45:00 PM »

Horace Showpony says, "Nintendo Directs, now with more horse parts."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64145/episode-828-the-big-cheesing-honor-system

Tuesday was a big news day around these part. First, Nintendo announced their direct, scheduled for Wednesday, and then they dropped a new - alarming - trailer for Everybody 1-2 Switch. The horse got a name, a cult following, and just some generally alarming imagery.

We, of course, indulged.

After we broke away from our new Horse God, we went through all the items in Wednesday's Direct, assisted by actual preparation by James.

Farm Games: 3
"Cozy": 3
Memories: Elephant Mario

That's right, Super Mario RPG remake is cool, Star Ocean The Second Story R is neat, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a nightmare of unfathomable proportions.

We're entranced.

Also: Wario Train

We are in dire need of questions. Please, I'm asking, send them.

This is the best we can hope for from you-know-who.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/64014/episode-827-radio-foxtrot-nintendo-is-not-nato-approved

Jon is back and he isn't up to speed on his NATO/OTAN abbreviations.

This week, coming off from some time away, he's playing a lot of fours. That is, he's playing Monster Hunter 4U on 3DS and Diablo 4. Guillaume is playing revived arcade game Clockwork Aquario and an actually-ugraded We Love Katamari. Greg has more impressions of Kirby Tilt and Tumble and the Ghost Trick demo.

PLAY GHOST TRICK

This week we answer a single email, enquiring how we would adapt Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to the Warriors format. Greg and James mostly passed, and wrote our own fan fiction for other Xenoblade content. This dovetails nicely with James' on-going weekly series "A Warriors Warrior Warriors for Warriors' Warriors."

You can... you know the thing. Do it here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 825: Chiffon Does Bring Out the Crazies
« on: June 04, 2023, 02:31:22 PM »

The cake, not the fabric,

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63894/episode-825-chiffon-does-bring-out-the-crazies

This episode has everything, from balloons to aliens and more.

We start the show with Listener Mail. Our first quest-

WE INTERUPT THIS SEGMENT FOR BREAKING NEWS. Nintendo announced Everybody 1-2 Switch! as we started recording and email gets sidelined for a thirty minute investigation of the game. This game must be so good, because Nintendo refuses to even describe it. A game of indescribable quality? Count me in!

Back on track, Listener Mail asks if the successor to Switch (which we do not know) will support amiibo and what cultural differences have impacted Nintendo's games. We couldn't have known at the time that Europe's taste for - and disrespect of - horses would result in the removal of the host's right to participate.

Not My 1-2 Switch.

My inbox.

After a break we take on New Business. Guillaume is yet another RFN member to take on the dinosaur-racing antics of Cruis'n Blast. Then we return to Hyrule, with more Tears of the Kingdom thoughts. Greg and James have finished off their eternal foe, and are now closing out their remaining quests. Gui and Jon continue on the road to the ultimate confrontation.

37

This week we have an exclusive interview with RFN's host.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63818/episode-824-i-dare-you-to-play-eye-of-judgment

This week, we're extremely excited to sit down with the host of Radio Free Nintendo, James Jones, to tell us about Episode 824.

James Jones - Nintendo World Report: James, thanks for joining us today.

James Jones - Radio Free Nintendo: It's my pleasure; thanks for having me.

NWR: Everyone wants to know, what did you all talk about this week? I assume a lot of Tears of the Kingdom.

JJ: (laughs) I'm sure they do. This week we do talk quite extensively about Tears, but that's not how we started.

NWR: Oh? That's a surprise.

JJ: We thought about it, and realized that people who are trying to stay as pure as possible might appreciate us including some non-Tears content. We decided to front-load it, starting with a riff on Sony's Project Q and Konami's naming decisions. We then asked Gui and Jon do their New Business. Editor's Note: co-hosts Guillaume Veillette and Jon Lindemann.

NWR: Project Q is so weird.

JJ: And Metal Gear Solid 3 is now Delta? Stupid.

NWR: So what did Guillaume talk about?

JJ: You will not believe it, but he's been playing Guilty Gear -Strive- on Xbox and Guilty Gear on Switch.

NWR: No!

JJ: I told you!

NWR: And Jon?

JJ: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, specifically the first game.

NWR: That's a bit more believable.

JJ: What's less so is he listened to Jonny's appearance a few weeks ago to make sure he offered new insights.

NWR: I'm stunned!

JJ: It's true though. After that we pulled a couple of emails from the inbox that are somewhat Tears-adjacent. Greg and I used those emails to talk about Tears, rather than doing a traditional New Business. Editor's Note: Co-host Greg Leahy.

NWR: Adjacent? What questions were asked?

JJ: The first asked if Monolith Soft was the best JRPG developer in the game, and if they'd be better served with a more grounded style of storytelling.

NWR: More grounded than a sentient, petty, world full of King Kongs?

JJ: Seems grounded to me. The second email asked where the Zelda series can go from here. Are we beyond "bigger is better?"

NWR: It's what you do with it.

JJ: It's like Jon is in the room with us.

NWR: Speaking of, what's up with that title ["I Dare You to Play Eye of Judgment"]? It had to be Jon, right?

JJ: Very perceptive of you. We're drafting Jon to become THE Eye of Judgment streamer on Twitch.

NWR: That sounds like the worst idea I've ever heard. I hope it happens.

JJ: Me too.

NWR: Well then, I can't wait to listen. Thank you for joining us!

JJ: My pleasure. And remember, send your emails.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 823: Pantless in Hyrule
« on: May 21, 2023, 04:22:01 PM »

Day 11: It's cold, I'm still stuck on this mountain, and a stupid plant person keeps asking me to find his friend.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63791/episode-823-pantless-in-hyrule

I probably don't need to tell you that this episode is largely devoted to discussions of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It's a tough game to talk about, especially this early, because so much of the game's joy is in the small discoveries - in a way everything is and isn't a spoiler. If you want to stay totally pure, come back later. We're all early-to-mid game so there's no real major plot spoilers here, but some tales of our early travels are shared.

Guillaume did manage to talk about something besides Tears... The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D. Week 4 of the Radio Free Hyrule podcast continues apace.

Lastly, we did manage to slide in a single email on gaming and managing your mental well-being. We covered this during the early days of the pandemic; obviously the world is different now. You can ask us to review an old topic here.

39

Are we releasing a Wind Waker episode, right as Tears of the Kingdom comes out? No, we RECORDED it as it came out. We're releasing after.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63718/episode-822-unprecedented-maelstrom-of-technical-hardships

Finally, after six weeks, the regular cast is back together. Finally, it is time or our The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker RetroActive part 2.

Does that mean we recorded after The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released for Greg and as it was releasing or the rest of the cast? Yes.

Does that mean you all are playing a new, gigantic, Zelda game already? Yes.

Do you still have space in your earholes for a retroactive on the O.G. big-world Zelda? I hope so.

If not, it'll still be here later. RetroActives are pretty timeless, and that's why we decided to release it here. After all, Breath of the Wild launched the same day we recorded a very tomato RetroActive. Call it tradition.

Next week we'll have a lot of Tears of the Kingdom to talk. For now, email us.

Okay, back to the underground.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 820: Racer X Goomba Tower
« on: April 30, 2023, 07:43:00 PM »

"This new Mario Kart DLC is getting spicy!" - James

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63609/episode-820-racer-x-goomba-tower

LAST TIME, ON RFN: "I promise you THREE emails!"

THIS TIME, ON RFN: It's a call-in show! With three emails.

That's right, with Gui still out and Greg watching the NFL Draft, Jon and James are running the shop on their own. And what do immature children do when the adults are out of town? House party.

We let you, the listers, become you, the callers. We were blindsided with questions and forced to answer them on the spot.

Topics we covered this week include:

  • RFN: The Game
  • Gaming and Public Domain Literature
  • Games Lost Without Music
  • RFN on Mario Party Monthly
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Character Draft
  • Nintendo Franchise Lore DLC
  • What Nintendo Got Wrong on Switch
  • Nintendo PR and Nintendo Lawyers: The Infinite Struggle
  • How to Fix Wii U (but not Change the Name)
  • What if Elon Bought Nintendo
  • ...and the RFN Email Address

If you're still struggling after that last one, you can use this instead.

The Wind Waker RetroActive part 2 now has a date: May 11. Yes, that is hours before Tears of the Kingdom launches. Did you know hours before the launch of Breath of the Wild was the Princess Tomato RetroActive?

This is tradition.

You can post your [Wind Waker] comments here.

41

This is the non-AI Jon Lindemann, by the way.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63503/episode-819-just-think-real-fascists-now-its-an-email-address

As Guillaume-watch enters its third week, and Jon begins a new iron-man streak, James just tries to warm up the show with a fun little chat about a dictator and his money and instead creates the longest stinger in show history.

Probably. Don't fact check that.

Anyway, this week we got a lot of Nintendo news, some good New Business, and a lot of content that is of questionable purpose.

James [eventually] kicks-off New Business with a review of the Fell Xenologue DLC for Fire Emblem Engage. Did you want more Fire Emblem Engage? Congrats, here's more Fire Emblem Engage. It also has difficulty settings that don't make any sense, so have fun with that.

Jon is going through his eShop haul, and this week he's digging into the Boxboy! bounty he bought. Specifically, he's playing Boxboy but bought buccos of Boxboy buy-ables. Jon also decided to return to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, because 600 hours of Monster Hunter Rise was simply not enough.

Greg is also going though a game that is now beyond the Eternity's Gate: New Super Mario Bros. 2. It's still "all about the gold," but that phrase has new meaning in an era where The Super Mario Bros. Movie has made the GDP of Vanuatu in a three week window. This leads to a long-running conversation about the larger business around Mario and Nintendo as a global entity.

Lastly, we conclude the show with a rapid-fire rundown of the Indie World contents.

After our outro music, stay tuned for an extended (and depressing) look at sports ownership.

We committed to three emails next week, do you want your garbage to be our garbage? Dump it here.

The Wind Waker RetroActive part 2 is inching ever-closer. You can post your comments here

42

...but what if its just symbols to him now?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63402/episode-817-logically-it-makes-sense-guillaume-knows-the-email-address

This is the first week of Guillaume's vacation, so of course he's getting a shout-out in the title.

Good news if you're tired of Mario Movie reviews - none of us have seen it!

Instead, we stage an email heavy episode this week. In it we: review your eShop hauls, figure out the next Nintendo toy to appear in their games, and list what series challenges we've taken on. Lastly, Greg closes out the show finally giving his long-delayed New Business on Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.

Did you like the emails? Did you dislike them? See if you can do better!

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker RetroActive will resume in a few weeks. You can post your comments here

World is flooded. E3 is dead. Boats: Floating.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63286/episode-816-they-should-have-let-us-sink-the-boat

About three years ago, E3 was brutally attacked in the parking lot by an unknown assailant. On the shelf for years, by the time it was ready for action in 2023 the world had moved on. No longer undisputed at the top of the card, E3 finds itself cut by the publishers it supported.

Setting aside our overly-dramatic writing, E3 officially died this week. We had a plan to fix it all the way back in 2020. It involved sinking cruise ships, multiple frauds, probably a few involuntary manslaughter charges, and more hype than any industry event in history. Our genius went unheeded, and hopefully the lessons are learned by all.

This week also offered some insights on the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Series Producer Eiji Aonuma hosted a 10 minute presentation on a handful of mechanics new to the upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild. Fuse is of particular interest, including his boat building demo and his construction of the world's longest salad fork.

Speaking of Zelda games and sinking boats, we also had Part 1 of our RetroActive for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. We split this into a two-parter due to scheduling struggles. If you want to continue to contribute, you can do so here.

This week we spent most of the time talking about the history of game and its HD remake. We also talk some of the early parts of the game, and some mechanical components.

With Gui out for a few weeks, we need email content. SEND US EMAILS!

Stop saying "hardware."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63255/episode-815-a-change-of-hardware

What's iconic about Mario? What does an alleged-AI think RFN sounds like? Why are there so many skeletons? This, and one more question, are answered in this week's RFN.

That question is about movie-based games.

After a break, we have a bit of New Business. James believes the NSO needs game manuals and that the Fire Emblem Engage DLC was mighty-speedy. Jon is beta testing his future obsession with Diablo IV. Greg finally gets to talk about Doom Eternal. Guillaume has final thoughts on LEGO Star Wars, and thanks our Talkback Heroes.

Just a reminder: emails go here.

NEXT WEEK is part 1 of RetroActive 52: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Comments go here!

Part 2 will be in a few weeks.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 812: I Wouldn't Even Accept Your Apology
« on: March 04, 2023, 03:08:32 PM »

Jon's back; can you tell?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/63031/episode-812-i-wouldnt-even-accept-your-apology

Radio Free Nintendo this week is a bit of "friends waiting at a train station;" people come and go at their proscribed times but the conversation continues.

Guillaume, James, and Greg start the show and it wraps with Jon, Greg, and James. I guess Greg and James are catching late trains.

Guillaume is playing Chained Echoes, a 16-bit RPG that lists a lot of inspirations but seemingly omits a big one. It took him a little while to connect with it, but he's enjoying this game created by a single person. The task-based leveling is a particular topic of interest. He also started 13 Sentinels. So should you.

James is finishing Fire Emblem Engage, and has a few final thoughts, but mostly he's been trying to reverse engineer a new style of Twitch streamer: infinite, AI-generated, content. "How is this thing creating new 'Steamed Hams' episodes over and over?" "How is this 'VTuber' interacting with the audience in a realistic way, and how did it learn to play Osu?" "How long can I watch a Chunibyo character try to convince his two friends that he is king of the hallway?" A while. Apparently.

Jon is summoned from the ether for Listener Mail - and he proves his memory by reciting the email address, albeit incredulously. Our first question asks us to explore missing the zeitgeist for a game, which predictably expands into an unrequested longer conversation about what zeitgeist for a game means, and how it impacts playing the game. Send us an email, we answer how we choose.

Guillaume's train arrives, and so the remaining trio move onto a second question: with the on-going invasion of Smash Bros. by the Fire Emblem franchise, what Smash Bros. fighters would server as good Emblems in Engage? There are so many choices.

Reminder: We are going to do our RetroActive on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker soon™. You can play the original GameCube release or the HD remake, but remember the eShop is shutting down soon.

As Jon accurately remembered, you can send your emails here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 810: Looking for the Contours of Fun
« on: February 19, 2023, 04:29:00 PM »

In a land bereft of fun, one man will seek it out in the blistering nothingness.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62907/episode-810-looking-for-the-contours-of-fun

I want to give your game a 1.25 out of 10 and so I shall.

However, there are people that suggest it is not necessary that I have such dexterity in my reviews. They want median and mean scores to correspond with the numerical mean of the range. They demand a semi-predictable cadence of 10s and 1s, tops and bottoms. They expect the bell curve to be rigidly enforced, as if each game is evaluated against every other game on the same grading scale.

I am not one such person. My mind is open, and therefore I am always correct. My views are nuanced and easily grasped. I am the Heraclitus in a candy coating of raw charisma.

Suffice to say, our accidental feature topic on review scores was no accident. Providence provides.

The gods speak.

Following this revelation, we move onto some New Business. Guillaume is no longer interested in playing Blue Dragon and Jon + Greg are reliving Metroid Prime with the new Remaster.

Hey y'all, did you know there was a Nintendo Direct? There was a Nintendo Direct.

We talk about it.

Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime Remaster, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance to Switch online, and more. Not much to add to this, so send us questions here.

Also, if you struggled listening to RFN over the last week on your podcast player of choice, we should be all good now. Thanks to the NWR tech team for getting this sorted.

Just as an FYI: we are aware that some podcast apps are not currently able to download RFN and other NWR podcasts. We are working to restore functionality as soon as possible. Affected apps include the Google Podcast app and AntennaPod. You can listen to the episode here or on other applications.

This week we do "a little" New Business, which in RFN terms means over an hour. James has more detailed impressions of Fire Emblem Engage. Let's be honest for a minute; if you ever justified Nintendo's removal of face touching content from Fire Emblem Fates, and are not enraged here, you're a serial killer or a hypocrite. There are no other options. You could be both, I suppose, lest we make the hypocritical serial killers in the audience feel compelled to make the most difficult choice of their lives.

Jon has a ¿new? game with Dead Space Remake. It's a game he talked about when it came out over a decade ago. We're old. He'll also be here forever, because he's currently stuck in a softlock that has ended his progress.

Guillaume closes out New Business with an update on Blue Dragon, and more pressingly the hottest ride in all the land Mario Kart 8 Ultimate. He held off on MK8U for new content, and now there is new content to consume. It would have cracked his game of the year list if it came out in 2022. Speaking of...

TRANSITION MASTER STRIKES AGAIN!

After a break it's time for the Radio Free "Nintendo" "Top Five" "Games" of "2022." The only words in that phrase that aren't shrouded in air quotes are "of," "Radio," and "Free." I wont post the selections here, but for those of you who are new: each host picks 5 games from 2022 on Nintendo systems.

Allegedly.

« on: January 29, 2023, 08:34:09 AM »

It is an important podcast.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62691/episode-807-this-podcast-is-significant

This podcast is special.

This podcast is unique.

This podcast is... uh... a change agent!

Wait, no.

It's 9.75 out of 10. It's the missing 0.25 that carries the message.

I'm not even sure what we're doing here right now.

Important New Business!

James has just stared Fire Emblem Engage and he has important thoughts on the first important 40 minutes. He also has impactful impressions of escape room game The House of Di Vinci.

Greg and Jon have been playing the just-released groundbreaking first person shooter GoldenEye 007, now on the N64 Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass and patched into (digital only) copies of Rare Replay on Xbox.

Greg also has moving early thoughts on Bayonetta 3.

Guillaume has iconic impressions of Blue Dragon, the early Xbox 360 RPG from Mistwalker.

Lastly, Jon has captivating impressions of Monster Hunter Rise on PS5 and Wave Race 64.

Okay, this is taking way too long. We only tackle a single email this week: can a funny game get universe 10 out of 10s. You can send us your important questions here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 806: Kirby's Dream Warren Buffett
« on: January 22, 2023, 10:12:26 AM »

We're reduced to wordplay.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62650/episode-806-kirbys-dream-warren-buffett

You expect me to write you an article during an NFL Playoff weekend and right after the release of a new Fire Emblem? Well aren't we just so entitled. You know what? Change of plans. This is an ALL EMAIL episode. They have nice short articles, so I trust Gui will just cut all that New Business we recorded and sort the rest of it out.

Questions this week: Nintendo's dubious suggestions, Baten Kaitos remake rumors, Mario's emotional needs, recasting Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and theological inquiries. If you want to see us study more great mysteries, you can consult the oracle.
