TalkBack / Fils-Aime: Wii Business "Historically Strong"
« on: June 24, 2010, 09:51:11 AM »
Nintendo of America COO clears the air regarding slowing sales of the Wii console.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23503

Nintendo held an E3 Analyst briefing on June 16, touching on what it considered to be several myths surrounding sales of its Wii console.

Addressing whether or not sales of the console are slowing, Fils-Aime presented NPD data showing that Wii sold more consoles between November 2009 and April 2010 than the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined.

Wii Sales Nov. 2009 - Apr. 2010

He then went on to display a comparison graph that charted the sales of the Wii, PS2, Xbox 360, and PS3 over each console's first four years of existence.  With the graph showing a predictably massive gap between the Wii and its HD contemporaries, he described the wildly successful PS2 as the "only other meaningful competitor" in terms of console sales by year. He stated that by year two, the Wii had already outsold the PS2 at the same point by 1.2 million units. By year three that lead extended to 1.7 million, and by year four it hit 5 million.

Wii Install Base by Year

He then presented the results of a survey (conducted by Ipsos) regarding adult home console ownership and usage.  According to the survey, gamers 18 and above that own a Wii and play "at least an hour or two a week" comprise a higher percentage of the console's ownership base than on Xbox 360 or PS3.  Therefore, according to Nintendo's data, Wii owners are more active than their counterparts on other consoles.

Wii Purchase Intent Among Adults

The last point he made illustrated purchase intent across all consoles for the next six months.  In an Ipsos survey Wii was well out in front, with its 11 percent nearly matching the combined percentages of both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Wii Purchase Intent H2 2010

Fils-Aime also commented that these purchase intent numbers were taken before the Wii Sports Resort bundle was announced.

TalkBack / Nintendo May Still Tweak 3DS Design
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:29:14 AM »
Reggie Fils-Aime states that they are still judging feedback.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23479

In an interview with IndustryGamers, Nintendo of America head Reggie Fils-Aime stated that the current design of their recently-revealed 3DS is not necessarily final.

He emphasized that part of what the company looks for at an event like E3 is feedback. "At an E3, our engineers are looking for feedback. You know, we have an army of Nintendo representatives out on our show floor talking to attendees, getting reactions to everything in the device: the depth slider, the buttons, the sliding pad that is, essentially, an analog-type stick. These are things that we’re looking to get reaction to, including the overall button placement. When we get all that feedback, then we’ll finalize the design."

Fils-Aime also expressed that Nintendo wished to gauge the E3 reaction to the 3DS before announcing launch and pricing details, as well as give themselves time to make "individual market decisions" for Japan, Europe, and the Americas before releasing the system.

He also reiterated that the device would ship in all major markets by March 31, 2011.

CONFIRMED has it that we're going to see a classic return in 3D on Nintendo's new handheld.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23340

UPDATE: 6/15/10 6:35 PM Nintendo of America confirmed this on their twitter account #nintendoamerica

At this very moment, Nintendo is holding an invite-only roundtable session that includes, among others, Shigeru Miyamoto. For those following at home, this same session at last year's E3 was where Miyamoto unveiled the first piece of artwork from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Word on the E3 streets indicates that we may see another Zelda unveiling at the roundtable this evening, in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS.

Is this true? Is it complete B.S.? Nobody knows except those that are in the roundtable right now.  We'll find out as soon as we can!

TalkBack / EDITORIALS: Lindy's Thoughts: E3 2010 Day...Zero?
« on: June 15, 2010, 08:47:06 AM »
The Director gives us his random musings on the non-first day of the show.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorialArt.cfm?artid=23266

So I'm checking my email on Monday morning, waiting for anything important to come across the wire in terms of our L.A. team getting into the EA, Ubisoft, or Activision events that day.  Karlie sends me a random missive with the subject, "No time to crop, and no words reqired".  I notice that there's an image attached, so I download it and behold...

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010: Lindy's Liquor - Inglewood, CA

I can only describe this as "stupefyingly awesome".  To think that there's a run-down liquor store in Inglewood, California that's my namesake is just too good to be true.  And in Inglewood, of all places!  As Dr. Dre has told us, Inglewood is "always up to no good".  Amen!  I hope this place sells t-shirts.  Next time I'm in L.A. I'm definitely going to stop by...in the daytime.

Oh, there was video game stuff going on?  It was hard for me to notice, since EA and Ubisoft hardly had any Nintendo content in their press conferences.  Their fitness offerings were nothing unexpected (although I thought it was cool to be able to upload your EA Sports Active 2 stats online), and there's another Raving Rabbids game...gotcha.  Outside of that, nothing much to report on the Nintendo side of things.  I must say though, that woman showing off Bulletstorm with Cliff Bleszinski likes to CURSE.  Geez, you don't need to have a potty mouth to prove you're one of the boys!

I have yet to listen to the podcast from last night, but I can't wait to hear the ribald tales of the Activision event...err CONCERT.  I checked out the pictures this morning and subsequently picked my jaw up off the floor.  Usher, Soundgarden, David Guetta, N.E.R.D., and Will.i.am all performed live.  What the hell? No wonder they don't have a booth on the show floor this year...they blew all of their budget on that show!  Maybe we'll see more of this in the future.  I can't say it's a bad way to handle things.  It certainly generates buzz.

Microsoft's press conference was more of the same in many ways: more Halo, more Gears, more Forza, more Xbox Live doodads.  Kinect just isn't that compelling to me outside of Child of Eden, and I'm not going to pay the rumored $149.99 asking price just to play one game.  The Wii's MotionPlus bundles are so cheap nowadays that I just can't see any audience picking this up over a Wii, especially when there's games like Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii out there. Just not gonna happen.

I'm much more interested in Sony's Move, merely because I hear its motion control actually makes sense in "H4RDC0RE" games like SOCOM.  If you're going to ape the Wii's control scheme, at least apply it to games that are underrepresented on the Wii to a certain extent.  That might get Wii owners to consider trying it out.  My guess is that Move will also be cheaper than Kinect, which is always good.  I also hate the name "Kinect", which has nothing to do with this train of thought, but hey, it's my editorial.

In only a few short hours the Nintendo Press Conference will begin, and Reggie will stride across the stage like a colossus and begin taking names.  Cammie will start putting more smiles on more faces. I shall start drinking.  And we all shall rejoice!

Enjoy Day One everybody!

TalkBack / Activision Announces Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock for Wii
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:44:48 AM »
The newest installment in the long-running franchise features a story mode, challenges for any song, and...Gene Simmons.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23188

Today Activision announced Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, the newest console installment of their music mega-franchise.  It is being developed by Vicarious Visions for Wii.

While retaining all of the Party Play and Competitive modes from Guitar Hero 5 (as well as the instrument selection of guitar, bass, drum, and vocals), Warriors of Rock adds several new wrinkles to the Guitar Hero formula.  There is now a Quest mode, in which you embark from the stage of New York's CBGBs club to help the Demi-God (voiced by Gene Simmons, naturally) defeat The Beast in order to save rock'n'roll.  Each of the game's trademark characters has their own "Warrior Power" that they can use to gain an advantage in the battle against evil.

Another addition is Quickplay+, which adds 13 different challenges for every track on the disc, as well as most songs imported/downloaded from Guitar Hero: World Tour and later.  Challenges include Power Challenge (which allows the use of Warrior Powers for extra-high scores), Band Streak, and High Score.  Quickplay+ leaderboards have also been added for each challenge, so players can see how they stack up with the best of the best.

Warriors of Rock will include 90 tracks, one of which is "Sudden Death", written and performed by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth specifically for the game.  The tracks revealed so far are:

  • AFI – “Dancing Through Sunday”
  •
  • Avenged Sevenfold – “Bat Country”
  •
  • Black Sabbath – “Children Of The Grave”
  •
  • Buzzcocks – “What Do I Get?”
  •
  • Children Of Bodom – “If You Want Peace... Prepare For War”
  •
  • The Cure – “Fascination Street”
  •
  • Def Leppard – “Pour Some Sugar On Me (Live)”
  •
  • Dethklok – “Bloodlines”
  •
  • DragonForce – “Fury of the Storm”
  •
  • Drowning Pool – “Bodies”
  •
  • Foo Fighters – “No Way Back”
  •
  • Foreigner – “Feels Like The First Time”
  •
  • Jane’s Addiction – “Been Caught Stealing”
  •
  • KISS – “Love Gun”
  •
  • Megadeth – “Sudden Death”
  •
  • Metallica & Ozzy Osbourne – “Paranoid (Live)”
  •
  • Muse – “Uprising”
  •
  • My Chemical Romance – “I'm Not Okay (I Promise)”
  •
  • Queen – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
  •
  • Rammstein – “Waidmanns Heil”
  •
  • The Rolling Stones – “Stray Cat Blues”
  •
  • Silversun Pickups – “There’s No Secrets This Year”
  •
  • Slayer – “Chemical Warfare”
  •
  • ZZ Top – “Sharp Dressed Man (Live)”
  •

"The world is a boring place.  Come with me, and enter a world populated of Demi-Gods and Beasts.  Transform from an everyday person and become the savior of rock and roll,” said Gene Simmons of KISS.  “It was an honor and privilege to narrate Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, even more so, to voice the Demi God. From the God of Thunder to the Demi-God, how cool is that..."

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock breathes new life into gamers’ current Guitar Hero music libraries providing literally hundreds of hours of replayability with the introduction of Quickplay+, which features 13 totally unique gameplay challenges for every on-disc track as well as most downloadable and importable songs from Guitar Hero® World Tour forward.  Gamers will complete challenges such as Band Streak, High Score and Power Challenge, which allows players to choose any two warrior powers they have unlocked to try and earn ridiculously high scores, to rank up and unlock more rewards and content than ever before.  All-new Challenge Leaderboards have been created in order to capture the outrageous scores that are capable with Quickplay+.

Delivering the largest on-disc rock music set list to-date, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock features more than 90 tracks that include guitar shredding hits from bands such as Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Slipknot and larger than life anthems from Queen, Muse and KISS.  Additionally, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth wrote and recorded “Sudden Death,” an original track for the game, which was inspired by Quest Mode’s storyline.  Along with original songs, the set list also includes special re-records by famous artists and tracks from bands that are making their music video game debut.  The first songs off of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock’s set list to be revealed are:

General Gaming / EA Partners with Canadian Hockey League for NHL 11
« on: May 22, 2010, 07:05:34 PM »
This is insta-buy...this has me so hyped.  My hometown London Knights are going to REPRESENT!

------------------------------
BRANDON, Manitoba--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in association with Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced a four year agreement that will see the league included in EA SPORTS™ NHL® products. The three regional leagues that make up the CHL, including the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), will all have their teams and players represented in EA SPORTS NHL 11 when it becomes available in retail stores this September.

“It’s exciting to have the CHL integrated into our game for the first time”
Representing 51 Canadian and nine American teams with players aged 16-20 the CHL is the top development league in the world and the number one provider of talent to the NHL. 47% of all players selected in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft came from CHL teams. The 2010 NHL Entry Draft could mark the fourth straight year where a CHL player is selected first overall, with Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers and Taylor Hall of the Windsor Spitfires representing the top two ranked players by NHL Central Scouting.

“The CHL is very excited to partner with an industry leader like EA SPORTS to create a brand new way for CHL fans to associate with their favorite CHL teams and players,” said David Branch, President, CHL. “This opportunity also provides EA SPORTS fans around the world the ability to learn more about the next wave of NHL stars as they compete in the best development league in the world.”

“It’s exciting to have the CHL integrated into our game for the first time,” said Jordan Edelstein, VP of Marketing, EA SPORTS. “Their inclusion will make NHL 11 the most definitive and complete hockey experience available.”

Four of the last five players to be featured on the cover of EA SPORTS NHL Series games are CHL graduates including Patrick Kane, Dion Phaneuf, Eric Staal and Vincent Lecavalier.

The licensing agreement between EA SPORTS and the CHL allows the following to be included in NHL 11:

- Ability to play with all 60 teams that make up the CHL
- Names and Likenesses of players that are on the rosters of a CHL team
- Mastercard Memorial Cup
- CHL new RBK Edge Jersey design in NHL 11
- WHL, OHL and QMJHL logos and league structures

The CHL integration in NHL 11 will tie to several modes in the game, including Be A Pro, Be A GM, Tournament Mode, Season Mode and Playoff Mode.
------------------------------

To 99% of Americans this means nothing, but to Canadians this is the sickest video game news I've heard in a LONG time.  Where I'm from, CHL players are like, guys from your high school.  And they're going to be in an EA Sports game.

TalkBack / Nintendo Files 3DS-Related Trademarks in Japan
« on: May 18, 2010, 12:53:13 PM »
Another slew of filings raises eyebrows.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23101

With the E3 reveal of Nintendo's 3DS portable system only weeks away, the trademark filing watch has begun.  Nintendo has indeed made several recent filings that are sure to get the industry talking.

Specifically, Nintendo has filed the following trademarks in Japan: 3DS, N3DS, 3DSWare, and 3DSPlay.  While the name "3DSWare" appears easy enough to decipher - a downloadable content delivery service akin to the Nintendo DSi's DSiWare - the name "3DSPlay" is open to speculation.  It could be a portable version of the Wii's Wii Play, or something else entirely.

While these filings may have been done to simply protect names that may not be used, the Nintendo DS followed a similar pattern prior to its release.  The "DS" moniker was widely considered to be a temporary code name, but in the end turned out to be the real name of the device.

For the uninitiated, up to this point players had no way of knowing what the current week's quests were without going online.  Now they can simply go to the Community Site, click on the "Gem" icon in the top-right corner of the main dialog, and view a quest calendar.

As a bonus, hunters can also download the calendar and import it into their own calendars, such as Outlook, iCal, or GoogleCal.  They can then sync the Monster Hunter Tri quest calendar with their cell phone so they always know what's going on.

TalkBack / Tecmo Koei CEO Comments on 3DS
« on: May 16, 2010, 10:54:38 AM »
Tecmo chief offers his opinion on who the new device will appeal to.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23085

In an interview with Nikkei, Tecmo Koei CEO Kenji Matsubara offered his initial thoughts on the Nintendo 3DS.

When asked what group the hardware is targeting, Matsubara unsurprisingly expected it to appeal to early adopters initially. "3D games don't have a sales record yet, so I don't know. However, I suspect it will be more accepted by core gamers rather than casual players. When you bring something new to the market, the core player group first finds it interesting, and then it expands from there. I believe current DS core gamers who like new things and core gamers who don't have a DS will be the first to jump in. After that, it will be up to the content."

Matsubara did not mention whether or not Tecmo Koei would be supporting Nintendo 3DS.
