Well, it was one of those couches that makes a mighty fine bed.  So whatever.  And what do you mean people would talk?  Talk about what?

And weren't you laying sprawled out on the bed and completely worn out when I last spoke to you?  How come you're around here now coming back for more?  And I don't fear any Mr. Pikmin.  You should know that by now.

now THAT is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in my life.  Complete kudos to you man.  I just wish I had that much money.

On a more on-topic note, perhaps if you asked Nintendo very nicely, and sent them those pictures, they might help you out a bit.    (Nintendo does like to reward its fans)

Actually, I thought it was the other way around... master key gets generated from the private key?

But I just might try ask slashdot later.  If anyone knows how to actually do it, I'm sure it would be someone around there.    (Actually, I might even have two seperate master keys...)

Perhaps I should rephrase that enigma... I just decrypted files that I encrypted as a test from a user account that was completely different than the one that encrypted the files.  All I needed were the keys.

I've seen nothing but EFS for the last day, and although I am still working on fixing this, I just want to say this right now.

DO NOT EVER USE EFS!!!!!!!!

EFS is just yet another means for Microsoft to piss off the consumer.  It seems to serve absolutely no rational purpose, other than locking the user out of his/her own files.  I used it under the assumption that the encryption was likely as easy to defeat as office documents, and I could probably break the encryption if really necessary.  This was PARTIALLY true.

The truth of the matter is that user accounts and passwords and crap really don't matter to EFS.  If you have both keys, you unlock the files.  And these keys are files located on your hard drive.  Nothing really magical or mysterious about them.  Ordinary looking.  (sort of).   Any Administrators on your box can use those keys for whatever they desire, including unlocking files.  If someone manages to get access to your hard drive, you've lost your keys.

The only thing that EFS seems exceptionally good at is locking your data for good once you've lost your keys.  Because the encryption strength on the files is REALLY strong.  But the locking mechanism seems like it was coded by that dude who works down at Radio Shack.

It still amazes me that Microsoft thought it would be a great idea to make an encryption system that doesn't unlock to your password or username...  Boggles the mind.

Actually, I used fdisk to delete the partition, then I did a complete reformat from the Windows XP Install CD.  Then I installed Windows XP on top of that.

Nevertheless, I extracted a whole crapload of data from the freshly reformatted partition, the only thing of relevance being the master EFS encryption key.  I am still missing my private key, but it's my HOPE that I can rebuild it somehow, since I still have my username and password.  I am currently mucking with the security certificates and user accounts in the hopes of stumbling across the answer.  I am seeing a whole lot more green in the Advanced EFS Recovery Tool than I was a few hours ago anyway.

Actually, due to a strange twist of fate, I remembered to decrypt the porn folder beforehand.

rpglover, thanks for the help, but I am dealing with plain text files that have been sealed by Windows' EFS (Encryption File System).

http://www.ntfs.com/internals-encrypted-files.htm

In a nutshell, it uses 120 bit RSA encryption (or something like that, I'm not a cryptography person), which I would need a lifetime to decrypt by brute force.

I have been digging through the remains of my reformatted and overwritten partition all of last night and tonight, and I have managed to recover my master key.  However, my private key, which is used to actually unlock the file is gone for good.  I have tried many different ways of getting at it, but I can't find squat.

New question for the day is... Does anyone know how to create an identical private key to one that was lost, providing I know the master key, and the username/password of the account in question?  Password/username/key/sample file available if anyone thinks that they can do anything with it that I can't.

I've been bad. I just reformatted, and in traditional form, I have forgotten to back up something very important. Namely, the encryption key to an encrypted folder.

*sigh*

So basically, I have just screwed myself. I only have one encrypted folder, but it's got a log file in it that is VERY important to me. (Which is why it was encrypted in the first place).

It would be very appreciated if anyone could help me out with this. I am not much of a hacker, be it white or black, and my only thought on the matter at the moment is coding a simple app to brute force hack the file, and wait a few months to read it. But I don't have enough knowledge of EFS to really do that right now, and I am sure that there is an existing app to do that anyways.

So PLEASE, if anyone knows how to break the encryption, reply, pm me, email me, whatever. Just please help me. It doesn't matter how inefficient, I am prepared to run a service for days, weeks, months, years, whatever it takes.

dave.brady AT uleth.ca, classic.grey AT gmail.com, ninjacommander AT hotmail.com. Take your pick. I will be eternally grateful for help.

Nay.  The reason I am much more hyped about Baten Kaitos is not he graphical style.  It's because Baten Kaitos was made by two of my most respected RPG developers.  Tri-Ace and Monolith.  These are the guys behind such things as Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and Xenosaga.

General Gaming / RE: MGS2: Substance PC version
« on: June 28, 2004, 07:27:59 PM »
AiAi, I don't remember both.  But I used the same controller layout as the PS2 version.  There are actions that are mapped to the analog functionality of the face buttons, and those are the ones I dropped.  The one I remember the most is the lack of being able to pull out my gun without firing it.  On the PS2, if you press the weapon button a little bit, it pulls out your equipped weapon, and doesn't fire.  On the PC version, I just have the button set to fire as soon as I press it.  But given the incredibly stupid manner of the PS2 way of doing it, it doesn't really hurt much.  (honestly, face buttons don't make the best analog sensors).

odifiend, both of the sticks should be functional on PC.  The only things that aren't are the analog face buttons.  Most PSX->PC converters even have rumble.

I disagree with that Mouse.    A couple things that really stood out to me are automatic server queries, and threaded discussions.  I would post a screenshot of some new stuff, but I really don't want to have to edit the screenshot, and there's stuff I would rather not share with everyone here.

E-Mail clients are well known for being much more fully featured than their webmail counterparts because of the robustness that you can put into a downloadable program.  Some of the better mail clients have threaded discussions, which nest emails and their replies in a format similar to a message board.  Google implements threaded discussions in a simple and elegant fashion.  It's almost like having a stand alone mail app without the hassle.

Another thing I noticed was that gmail uses client scripting to query the mail server every so often to check if there's any new mail.  I gave the source code for that a brief looking at, and I noticed that for Internet Explorer people, it uses the XMLHTTP ActiveXObject.  I assumed from there that Mozilla users would use the XMLLHttpRequest object built in, and Opera users would likely use some other form of doing the same thing.  (Perhaps a DOM Document).

Basically, what this means for the user is that you do NOT need to refresh your inbox to receive new mail.  It will just appear in there when a new mail message is received.  I can pretty much guarantee that this works on Mozilla/Mozilla forks and Internet Explorer.  Opera/Konqueror/Safari users should probably give it a shot, but no promises.

As for the privacy thing, gmail is upfront with you when you sign up, and tell you all about how their system works.  When you delete email, it may take a while for the email to be fully deleted from their systems, but it WILL be deleted eventually.  The real difference between gmail and non-gmail is that you have no idea what microsoft or yahoo do with your email.

But regardless, I think it's a little bogus to be complaining about gmail's privacy.  You agree to their terms when you sign up.  They give you 1GB of space, and the fastest and bestest webmail interface I have ever seen.  In return, they want to deliver ads to your inbox based on the scanned content of your email.  As a consequence of the 1GB of space, it may take a while for emails to be deleted.

But personally, if their terms were to take a random sample of every 100 emails in your inbox, photocopy it a hundred times, send it around the office and laugh, I honestly don't care.  I'm beyond the power of any insane US President or his merry men, as I am Canadian, and it's not like I am up to no good that often anyway.  (And I use anonymous email accounts and spoofed IP addresses for such things anyways).

Short and sweet of it is that I love gmail.  I think that it's just your standard knee jerk reaction that's generating such bad press.

guys, who really cares if the server reads your email?  How exactly do spam filters work if they don't scan your email?  Unless you run your own mail server, SOMEONE is always going to have the power to read your email.  And it's just common practice for the server to scan your email.  This whole "gmail isn't private!", "gmail is bad!", "gmail knows about my gerbil pr0n!" thing is just the typical knee jerk reaction that is all too common in the world these days.  It's this same logic that almost led some state (California?) to banning dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO).

And I'm sorry, but I just want no part of that.  I happen to like gmail, and I honestly don't care if they deliver relevant ads to my inbox.

I don't know what's up with the 100px avatars myself...  they just look fugly to me.    I have a handy bookmarklet though that can reduce all the images on the page's size thing.  Yeah.  Man, english is just unpossible for me today.  (Interestingly enough, all my programming coworkers have had the same problem today.  I think there might be something to that.  Programming makes you dumb or something to that effect.)

Berny, your opinion means a little more to me because you have tried both the Mac Firefox and Camino.  I know that Firefox is hands down the best browser on Windows (and Linux), but I honestly don't know about Macs.
