I'm sure this cast can do fine, but I really just despise the trend of replacing dedicated voice actors with Hollywood actors "because movie".

Nintendo, you already hired Illumination, so you already signaled that you don't care about the quality of this movie, but why did you think it was necessary to do this in an animated movie? Did Charles Martinet tell you he couldn't do that voice for 75 minutes?

What's with the shot at Illumination? They are actually one of the better animation studios out there.

As for Martinet, go listen to him speak in full sentences in Mario Teaches Typing. His Mario voice is good for short bursts, but is not great when it comes to speaking full sentences.

I can't stand Illumination. They are very good at making money, and very little else. Their films emit a crass commercialism and cynicism I just can't stand. Their movies have no heart and skate by on surface-level platitudes, at least the ones I've seen.

The cast is seems fine other than Charlie Day as Luigi which I actually really like. Chris Pratt may be an odd choice though I’m willing to keep an open mind.

Lindsay Ellis has a great video essay about how casting Robin Williams as Genie in Aladdin changed the landscape of casting animated roles. Genie was written specifically with Robin Williams in mind. That’s why that worked so well. Casting big name actors in voice roles kind of misses the point.

Everyone associates Charles Martinet with Mario. No complaints here, but I’m going to pour a 40 oz on the curb for Captain Lou Albano.

They should have just gone all Sunny with the cast. Glenn Howerton as Mario, Kaitlin Olson as Peach, Danny DeVito as Bowser, and Rob McElhenney as Donkey Kong.

When this movie was first announced I figured they'd give Mario's role to someone like Seth Rogan.  Well looks like I was almost right.  Seth is voicing Mario's original co-star Donkey Kong instead.

I'll be interesting to see what Chris Pratt does as Mario.  Charlie Day will be great as Luigi and I can definitely see what they be doing with his character, but Chris Pratt as Mario makes me wonder how he'll be portrayed.  I'd also say Jake Black as Bowser is a pretty good choice considering all the recent Mario games portray Bowser with rock and roll music.

I'd be in favor of them embracing the Rock Star persona for Bowser.
