Wii's 'Sync' Button Revealed
« on: June 29, 2006, 09:15:38 AM »
Finally, definitive proof of what is under that little flap.

For awhile now, people have been speculating what could possibly be under the Wii's front flap. Back in 2005, Planet GameCube could have told you that the only thing under there was a slot for an SD card. However, things have changed. Nintendo employee Zach Stroum has posted a link on his blog to a Play-Nintendo article which contains an image that reveals what is underneath the Wii's front flap. Being a Nintendo employee, he wasn't able to talk about it before, but now that the cat is out of the bag thanks to the leaked picture below, he can mention it. Though it's very hard to see, underneath the flap are the previously known about SD card slot as well as a button labled "SYNC". However, it is not known yet what this button will do when pressed.

This will only cause more speculation...

As in, what exactly does it synchronize with?

BRAIN WAVES???

J/k.

Maybe my eyes are just bad, but I'm having trouble making out the "SYNC" on there...

Could it be used to sync up your Wii with your DS for connectivity? That seems likely, but what seems even *more* likely is that it'll match the system's settings to your preferences. Didn't Nintendo talk about having someone's preferences stored inside their wiimote? It's likely that pressing this button will modifiy itself to your whim.

Guess we'll have to wait to find out, though.

The fact that it is right next to the SD card slot makes me think it with sync up the inserted SD card with whatever is stored on the system's internal memory.

Sync the controllers. they are wireless and use 360 degree range of motion. It might need a moment to "sync" itself from where you stand and where the Wii sits. And maybe to connect more than 1 controller. I dunno.. it seems obvious to me. Im not gonna claim that, this is what it is, and I could be completely wrong... but considering the Wii's motion capability, it doesnt seem like anything else. well, besides maybe a DS connectivity.

Beat me to it.  That's almost certainly what it's for.

That makes no sense.  If the controller sync button is on the console itself you'd have to walk over there to press it; when you walk back to where you were playing the game the controller would be out of sync.  If there is a controller sync button, it will be on the controller itself.

I agree it's for syncing data.  But brainwaves would be cooler.

Nah there is no setup needed for the Wiimotes.  Its all done via infrared on the sensor bar.  It doesn't matter where you stand, everything off of relative movement to the bar.  I'm leaning more towards a SD card or DS reference with it myself.

I think the brainwaves are right.  They keep hinting at new features.  This will allow us to sync back with the collective.  Until we can realize are full connection and integration.

Probably is Syncing the Wireless stuff up.  Maybe just maybe syncing with you home computer for backed-up data.

Edit:  That close of a picture.  I hope they do the Shiny layer of clearcoat like they did with the DSL.  This won't be touched much in theory and I think it look nice.  There it looks sort of cheap.

It wouldn't be under the flap if it wasn't specifically for the SD cards.

Why would a button on the console do something more easily accomplished in the system menu's point and click interface?  I doubt it's for the SD cards.  I also don't think it would be under the flap unless it was for something you'd rarely need to push.  It's probably a function that might need to be performed when the system menu isn't available, which means you're playing a game, the system isn't turned on, or your controller isn't working right.

Perhaps it causes the system to do something with the sensor bar, or maybe it has something to do with the Connect24 service.

You have two Wii's networked in the same room.  You use the Sync button to link each controller with the console it will be used with.

The button is hidden because  most people won't use it.

wouldn't that also require a sync button on the wiimote itself??

not trying to put you down, but rather asking seriously, perhaps they'd just use the home button, cuz ur reasoning makes sense to me, as would using the home button.

hmm....

I am the only one here who finds it the least bit strange that the label on the Wii disc is facing towards the SD memory card slot and not away from it?  Generally in DVD and CD players the data side of the disc faces towards the thick side of a unit and the label faces towards the thin side, since the data side has to face towards where the laser is housed.  It is usually considered logical to put the laser in the thickest area so there is the most possible room for it.  In this image, however, the data side of the disc is facing towards the thin side of the unit, which looks like it is only a fraction of an inch thick.  Either they have a really small laser or the disc is being put in upside-down.  Moreover, it looks like there are feat on the left side of the unit, indicating this is the bottom.  This would mean the disc is put in label-down, which I have never heard of.  If this is a promo shot that got leaked early, which is seems to be considering it appears pretty staged (especially with the lit table), you would think they would put the disc in correctly, but perhaps not.  More speculation, I guess.

And I am playing with the image in photoshop a bit.  I can't get much but I think it is an arrow sort of thing next to the "sync" text, not an h or n or any other letter.  There are two vertical parts, but they do not seem connected.

FWIW, my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse have "Connect" buttons-- one the receiver, one on the mouse, and one on the keyboard, so I could see something similar for the Wii remotes.  Given the Sync button location, I think of it like Tracking on some VCRs-- it was something you'd only occasionally need to use, so it was hidden under a flap.  Now some of the other pictures, like the one showing a possible bottom flap (DVD add-in?) and a hole in the base (dev kit connection or just airflow port?) are interesting as well...
