Microsoft and Sony Unite to Support the Wii
« on: May 15, 2006, 12:18:04 PM »
With enemies like these, who needs friends?

Nintendo has recently been barraged with kind comments by its closest  competitors, Microsoft and Sony.  During an interview with Reuters at E3  last week, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President, Peter Moore, made a swipe at  Sony saying, "Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?  People are ... going to  buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3.  People will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product -- like  what I believe Wii will be -- with innovative new designs and great  intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid."

Sony, for their part, responded to Microsoft's barb in an interview with GamePro. "I think Peter Moore is exactly right," said Sony exec, Phil  Harrison. "I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase  after PlayStation 3. I haven't had a chance to check out the Wii myself, but  Nintendo has a great history of innovation and has always done great things  for gaming and long may they do so."

"Bullets, my only weakness.  How did you know?"

Maybe they want Nintendo to remian in the game market for the sole reason of stealing their ideas!

I read it like this:

"When you go to the store to buy a Wii use all that money you save to also buy a Playstation 3!"

"No, buy an Xbox 360 to compliment your Wii.  It's cheaper than a PS3."

Essentially Sony and MS are positioning THEMSELVES as the second console with the Wii being the assumed purchase.  They may not even realize that but that's what they're saying.

Wether people like it or not, publicity even from competitors is fair and always welcome.

They're right, I'm buying a Wiivolution and a PS3 both...though I'm likely getting Nintendo's next gen before I do Sony's...
360 isn't even in the running at this point for me, it has nothing I want.

Correct.

MS has made a fine living off of Apple's ideas and innovations for over two decades. They recognize that trying to kill Nintendo is like killing Apple: biting the hand that feeds them.

There are two types of companies in the world: those that innovate and those that take innovations from other companies, do a better job marketing them and succeed that way.

Sony and MS both know that Nintendo is going to be around for a while but it's that THEY are the ones vying for the same market: the established hardcore gamer.

Yeah, it's not like either one of them said, "Forget us, just buy a Wii."

Even though that's what they should have said.

Has Nintendo erected a true lightening rod in the center of the industry?
Are they truly rising above the traditional "console wars?"
Will Sony and Microsoft ever. JUST. GO. AWAY.

Stay tuned!

I never believed it would happen, but it seems to be the case.

The whole "Be so different that they can't touch you." strategy seems to be working.

I know, its weird how its playing out. Its as if in playing hookey from the "big game," they are letting two big, bad schoolyard bullies to really get to know one another, knowing what will inevitably then ensue. Problem solved?

At first, nintendo was scaring me with their "Blue Ocean" nonsense speak. I'm actually unfortunately familiar with corporate jargon, and hearing that kind of corporate theory come from Nintendo was quite disheartening and put a solid knot in my stomache. But their master plan is starting to show itself, and it really is epic. Provided things play out as they're appearing to be, the NES will no longer be remembered as their big, bold accomplishment, which is fscking INSANE to think about!

/methinks this is perhaps something they've been hammering out for a long time, while Yamauchi was still in the big chair. I mean, surely this isn't all a plan by Satoru Iwata...

Right?

" I haven't had a chance to check out the Wii myself, but Nintendo has a great history of innovation and has always done great things for gaming and long may they do so....so we can "innovate" as well"

thats how i read that last statement anyway.

"Now, why doesn't Microsoft let Nintendo sell Rare games on the VC?"

although i'd love to play some of those classic rare games, the only way i see microsoft doing that while rare is under their belt is by having some kinda MS ads in the game. Like you d/l perfect dark and after the Rare logo you see something like "perfect dark 0 only on xbox" or something. that would be super lame and i wouldnt want nintendo to make an agreemant which would advertise its competitor.

I was buying a PS3 at launch... until the "$600 LOL" crap...  Now I don't know what I'm doing besides getting Wii.

What was the system seller for the PS3? I can understand Halo 3 on the 360, but what on the PS3 is a clear must-have?

I've been thinking this for quite some time now.  Wii is so cheap and innovative, it's almost a must-have second console.  But if enough people pick it up as a second (in addition to the ones who pick it up exclusively) Nintendo could eclipse both of the big guys.  It's going to be a very interesting "console war" that's for sure.
