You absolutely need the dock because it doubles as a pen holder. Jebus, Kairon, it’s as if you have no concept of true value.

I apologize for my excessive wrongness  :'(

In contrast to the Amico's long awkward stay in the post light, PlayDate is actually coming out next month and looks very, very real! They've said little, and didn't try to fill the silence with talking and promises, so there's not as much exhaustion of the topic.

I admit it looks like a fun tech toy. If I have spare discretionary funs I might get one... though I did finally manage to talk myself out of getting that snap-on dock-charger accessory for it after two days of asking myself "will this REALLY make me happy or am I just being excessively consumeristic yet again?"

I'm still watching the occasional Amico YouTube video, I follow some channels who I guess would be classified as the "Tommy Shills" if I bothered to learn more about the drama, but I guess I shouldn't be TOO surprised by the flamewars in a teacup brewing up. The Amico has simply suffered from being announced so long ago and not coming out for so long. In that time skepticism easily flares up into dislike and antagonism, plus just negative-energy antagonism for internet clicks and views.

The Amico, just needs to come out. They've had two years of Tommy Talking which is like, ok, you're scrappy and don't have giant marketing budgets, but that's old now. This thing just needs to either be real or not. And there are actually some games on it I'm positively curious about, but they don't even have updated gameplay footage for almost all of them.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that they're still scrambling behind the scenes to get it all ready because they're a tiny player, and once they finally get their marketing up and running THEN we'll see some actual polish, but right now it's just the same 'ol same 'ol and it's proponents are really just "keeping the faith".

I'm pretty sure you'd be hard-pressed as a consumer to find silver linings in this. No one WANTS to have to dole out hard-earned cash for stuff.

But there's simply a couple points where this is hard to get riled up about for me.

For one, inflation is real. A $60 video game in 1997 with inflation is probably $85 dollars today. A price rise to $69.99 is not only overdue, it's actually not keeping pace with inflation! And likely this is for a more robust and content-full product to boot. (discussions about whether consumers are able to afford that entertainment are a completely different topic)

Another point is that one might argue that games have FALLEN in price! If you want to play a video game there are options ranging from $50 to $40 down to $14.99, $10, $2, and FREE!!! If we look at these as generally interchangeable entertainment experiences, then you absolutely don't have to buy a $69.99 game when there are so many new AND classic titles available for SO much cheaper.

But what about if you absolutely NEED that ONE game and nothing else will do? Well, aren't games a "luxury"? I'm not downplaying the importance of art and entertainment for social and intellectual edification, but I think it's a personal choice to fixate on a single game. A fun one, but it's hard to see anyone compelling us to be handcuffed to these launch purchases, these are handcuffs we put on ourselves.

There's just too many ways where complaining about the inflation of game prices sounds like a problem that's only important if you've taken care of so many other more important concerns on Maslowe's hierarchy of needs, and only if you CHOOSE to fixate on those $69.99 price points to the exclusion of other options.

TalkBack / Nintendo Joins PlayVS for High School Varsity Esports
« on: June 02, 2021, 09:40:36 AM »

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 will have official High School Leagues this Fall; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will join them next Spring.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/57338/nintendo-joins-playvs-for-high-school-varsity-esports

Nintendo and PlayVS have officially announced a partnership that brings Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 to high school varsity sports. Nintendo will be providing the Nintendo Switch System to thousands of select qualifiying schools, as well as games and online subscriptions, while PlayVS will provide the league tournament structure as well as exclusive partnerships with state and national high school athletics organizations.

PlayVS advocates and official ESports in schools and boasts Esports leagues in all 50 states in the USA, including state championships. They provide an end-to-end solution for schools to officially create varsity Esports programs, partnerships with game publishers like Nintendo and run the scheduled league matches throughout a Fall and a Spring season. They advocate not just for ESports as an official Varsity-level program, but point to its inclusivity, community, and relationship to academic STEM programs. They also argue that already hundreds of colleges and universities are offering tens of millions of dollars in scholarships in ESports. (PlayVS supports College level ESports programs as well as High School Varsity.)

In the past Nintendo has dabbled in providing some support for various independent ESports leagues in the past, as well as hosting their own controlled invitational tournaments at major marketing events. The PlayVS partnership, while limited to the amateur Scholastic field, appears to be a further official step for the company in the Esports arena.

Schools interested in creating teams and joining league play for the Nintendo games can sign up now for the waitlist for the Fall High School season at PlayVS.

I look forward to playing this on the Switch 2, because there's no way this isn't a Switch 2 launch game, having a nebulous 2022 release date like that.

I agree. I'm wondering if it could be a cross-gen Switch and Switch 2 game with a unified online community.

Is "to the moon!" a reference to The Honeymooners? Nice touch, if so.

To Kairon: Don't do it, Kairon! The wood grain calls to me too, but we must resist!

It was just delayed to October 2021 so I'm safe for awhile longer! Hehe.

For the Splatoon fans here, are y'all excited for a new one next year? The trailer made think it would be a spin-off initially, but unless it's a big overhaul I don't really see the point (besides money). That team has a crazy turn-around though: Splatoon (2015), Splatoon 2 (2017), Octo Expansion (2018), Splatoon 3 (2022).

Eh...not really? I'm not real big into Splatoon multiplayer, and if we're getting another sequel that's MP-focused where the player has no choice in what MP they get to play...I'm just not all that hyped. "Splatoon, but MORE" was the selling point of the 2nd game, so if that's also the case for the 3rd game it's one I can wait on. I expect it to be a Switch 2 launch game anyway with that nebulous 2022 release date. I was hoping there'd be a lot more SP after the excellent Octo Expansion the 2nd game got and the moody trailer we just saw for the 3rd game. But no...it just seems to be more Splatoon, same as the last Splatoon.

Yeah, I think more than just being Splatoon 3, I am personally of the belief that this telegraphs the "Switch 2" is coming in 2022. Since Splatoon 3 so far just seems to be "Splatoon 2, but more", the best significant selling point I'd see for it would be a completely new platform to debut on. I'm actually thinking it could be a cross-gen game on both the Switch and Switch 2, but with unified online.

With BoTW not confirmed at all for 2021, and Splatoon 3 explicitly targeting 2022, next year is shaping up to have a lot of the original Switch's launch IPs in place. Now we just need a Mario Kart 9 and 3D Mario forecast for that time period and it'd be eerily similar to the Switch's own launch year.

It's unfathomable to think the PS5 flopped THAT hard in Japan... I'm trying to assume that they really are that supply-constrained (just like they are all over the world?) and that they are also prioritizing other markets.

I know the Japan console market has fallen FAR in priority and significance due to their gaming population's transition to mobile as well as the growing dominance of the major NA and EU markets, but it IS still quite encouraging to see Nintendo having a strong presence there.

I have considered having one to open and play around with and keeping another in a box as a collectable.

This... is exactly what I did... Get out of my head!!!

I'm trying not to collect things anymore.

Yeah... I need to do this...

Evercade is just sitting in my Amazon "Save Items" List. I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on even though I've easily spent as much money already on Switch games in just a single month.

I'm also still slightly keeping track of Amico. There are honestly a handful of games I've seen for it that I'd get a bit of a kick out of. With the delay to April next year though, I don't have to make a decision on that yet.

Finally, I've had an Oculus Quest/Quest 2 sitting in my Best Buy saved items list for about a year now... can't bring myself to pull the trigger on that either, especially given the rough review Are Technical's gave the VR headset recently.

TalkBack / Re: Bethesda Acquired By Microsoft In US$7.5b Deal
« on: September 22, 2020, 02:09:08 PM »
It denies current rival Sony several enticing exclusives in the future (Skyrim sold 30 million units, they just bought its sequel), pads the xCloud portfolio in another big blow to Google's Stadia, and it effectively raises the price of entry for "new" players in the market like Apple, Amazon, and TenCent.

This all shores up their position against both their current as well as their future rivals. I agree with you Xbox often seemed like a side-project which grew slightly too big to kill, but it's difficult to read this purchase as anything other than MicroSoft going all-in on gaming.

I think this is very astute. This move affects not just current players in the field, but possible future competitors as well. It's not just about console gaming, but cloud gaming, and therefore the cloud business as well. If all we were talking about was physical Xbox Hardware, then it wouldn't make nearly as much sense to keep ploughing money into this venture. But for the past several years MS has been thinking about a different/more comprehensive battlefield altogether.

66
Good lord the console wars are alive and well.

Restructured the OP to separate hardware, software, DLC, and NSO updates. I don't know if anyone really uses this list, but if so, let me know whether you prefer this, or the previous chronological list. Personally I thought it looked too cluttered and unwieldy before.

It looks great! Thanks for doing that!

68
Good grief, just a standard please! I don't have room for all that collector's edition stuff, lol!

69
I bought an actual physical guidebook for this game but am not going to play it until I can get the physical copy later this year. LOL. I need to lock up my credit cards.

70
Sony was THIIIISSS close to repeating their whole "FIVE HUNDRED NINETY NINE US DOLLARS" fiasco. I think they were pulled back from that precipice by Microsoft pricing so aggressively.

71
Oh man, the 3DS was a great system and I STILL miss Street Pass so much! T-T

That said, discontinuing this system means that Nintendo has no offerings at sub $199 price points. I'm curious, is it no longer tenable to run a business for dedicated video game devices (even older ones) at $150 or $100, or does Nintendo think they can bring down the price on the Switch Lite another $50 to address this segment?

General Gaming / Re: Sitting on the sidelines: PS5 vs XB Series X
« on: September 08, 2020, 02:29:39 PM »
With the news that the Xbox Series S will be an all-digital version with a 512GB SSD and not capable of 4K gaming BUT priced at $299, I think that Microsoft is getting SUPER aggressive. I had thought before that they'd hit a higher price due to costs, but maybe costs aren't as high as I thought, or MS ws able to pull some deals, or they're just simply more aggressive than I gave them credit for. I guess I was of the mindset that they'd let their Gamepass value proposition do all of the heavy lifting for them and just rest on their laurels where console hardware strategy was concerned, but this is sort of a huge move for them.

The ball's in Sony's court now. Their PS5 Digital Edition still boasts the fulls 10-12 TF of marketing power that their full console does, so the question is whether that's a problem because it means they can't hit as low a price point as MS, or whether that means that people would be willing to pay $100 more for the "real thing." (I'm now imagining a $399 PS5 Discless, and $499 flagship console versions from both platforms.)

I guess the ball's in Nintendo's court too now actually. A $299 Xbox Series S is right at the Switch console price point, so the comparisons are inevitable and despite their being different propositions entirely, it may still start to put pressure on Nintendo to come down in price. (Well, SOMETHING has gotta get Nintendo to drop their price, right?)

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Charterstone: Digital Edition coming to Switch
« on: September 03, 2020, 09:12:00 PM »
I have to admit after reading this post I got curious and clicked through. Then I went on Youtube and looked up some basic "how to play" videos. It sounds like a REALLY neat boardgames with how it changes after each play! Of course, since the physical boardgames changes physically as you play it irl, it makes a TON of sense to have a digital version where it's easier to "reset" or starter with no changes.

Given that boardgames, no matter how cool, take up a lot of real world space (which is at a premium for me right now), and since this digital edition has a built in single-player campaign, this is DEFINITELY on my radar now!
