General Chat / Annoying Popups
« on: September 27, 2005, 12:16:45 PM »
I'm getting a really annoying Javascript pop-up ad from this site. It's an add for some stupid "Windows NX Update" site, and it keeps asking if I want to update my system and keeps popping up a full screen ad for it. I keep clicking "Cancel" or try to "X" it off, but it just keeps popping up.

Nintendo Gaming / FIVE new Pokemon games for GBA and DS
« on: August 09, 2005, 05:30:43 PM »
http://ds.ign.com/articles/640/640249p1.html

Long story short, two action RPGS for the DS, a puzzle game for the DS and a new "Mysterious Dungeon" duo of games that span both the GBA and the DS.

Will this lead to the jolt of new creativity that the Pokemon series desperately needs? Discuss.

Nintendo Gaming / Donkey Kong Jungle Fever
« on: July 14, 2005, 04:44:50 AM »
The crew at The Mushroom Kingdom are reporting that Capcom is working on a new arcade game called "Donkey Kong Jungle Fever". No clue on what kind of game it could be, but based on the title, it could be a sequel to "Donkey Kong Jungle Beat"...

Nintendo Gaming / Zelda Vs. Xbox 360 Commercial
« on: June 08, 2005, 04:11:38 AM »
Okay, we know that Twilight Princess will be release at roughly the same time as the Xbox 360. I was thinking of a cool idea that Nintendo could take advantage of that...

The commercial opens in a generic game store, with some poor gaming shlub (I'm thinking the awesome cashier guy from the "Free Demo" and Zelda Promo Disc commercials) looking at a shelf. On one end is an Xbox 360 with a $300 price tag, and on the other end is a GameCube with a copy of Twilight Princess leaning against it with a $150 price tag. As the camera cuts to the guy's confused face, a voice over says "For half the price of an Xbox 360, you could buy a Gamecube and the new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess." It then cuts to some snippets of gameplay as the announcer describes the game. It then ends with the gamer happily leaving the store with the Gamecube in one hand and Zelda in the other.

Any other ideas?

They've been all over eBay since last week, and most auctions for the card only end at around $80 (auctions that include the press kit end at about $100). That's a bit insane, to say the least. How much would you pay max for it? I'd see myself going as high as possibly $20, just for the coolness factor. But anything higher is just a bit much.

General Chat / Gamestop buys EB Games

Does this mean that the suckiness that is EB Games is gone forever? Or does this issue a dawn of a new, even more sucky retailer? Only time can tell.

Nintendo Gaming / Good news everyone (Metroid Pinball first screens)
« on: April 09, 2005, 11:19:24 AM »
Good news everyone (end Farnsworth voice)! I came upon a booklet for upcoming DS games at Blockbuster and it has screens of the Metroid Pinball game! And it actually doesn't look half bad!
http://www.rydia.net/joshnickerson/dp/metpin.jpg
But the bad news is that it's made by the same jerks who made Mario Pinball Land.

Nintendo Gaming / Touch screen recalibration?
« on: March 02, 2005, 04:04:22 PM »
Okay, I was fooling around with the DS unit at Wal-mart, and for some reason the stylus won't work in Wario Ware. Curious, turned it off and booted back to the main menu and tried out Pictochat. There I discovered that when I tapped the screen, it would active a point about an inch away from where I tapped. Funky.

So can this happen? And is there a way to correct this? I figured it was probably from some idiot kid banging on it or something.

Nintendo Gaming / Lost with the translation
« on: February 22, 2005, 04:23:48 PM »
Hey, I imported Bonk's Adventure for the Cube, and I know next to nothing... well, nothing about Japanese and I have no idea how to access the save function and other things in the menus. Does anybody know where I could find a menu translation or something like that?

Nintendo Gaming / Wario Ware Touched Demo Out Now!
« on: February 18, 2005, 07:15:08 AM »
During my weekly rounds, I discovered that most stores with a DS demo system have Wario Ware installed now. It's pretty trippy.

Nintendo Gaming / Jungle Beat Demo!
« on: February 18, 2005, 07:12:53 AM »
My Circuit City just got in the latest Gamecube demo (#25, I believe) and it's got Donkey Kong Jungle Beat as a playable demo! It's pretty sweet. It took me a bit to get used to it, but before long I was banging the bongos like a maniac, probably freaking out some customers in the process. Obviously, you'll only be able to find it at kiosks that have the bongo drums already attached.
From what I can remember, it also has demos of RE4, Metroid Prime 2, Mario Tennis, Virtua Quest, and Star Fox Assault.

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime Hunters - Weirdness
« on: December 24, 2004, 11:23:44 AM »
Among the four DS demo units in my area, the Target one seems to have a unique feature. When I loaded up the title screen to the MPH demo, I noticed that there was a blue dot underneath the logo. I tapped it and a window came up asking if I wanted to view a movie. It was a short trailer of some FMV of Samus fighting some space pirates, then it flashed up the metroid website addy.
But that was the only unit I could do that on. All the others have the MPH demo, but they don't have that "easter egg".

Nintendo Gaming / Minish Cap demo!
« on: December 22, 2004, 01:59:04 PM »
Dropped by Gamestop today and I saw they had The Minish Cap on the GBA display! I strolled over (okay, I ran like a nine year old) and checked it out. Here's the odd thing. Whenever they have GBA games on display like that, it's usually the entire game. Not here, this was like a demo disc, complete with a menu where you could select which area you wanted to start in (There were three choices, Minish Forest, some mine level and I forget the last one, but I think it was a dungeon).
I just thought it was kind of strange to see on a GBA. I'm gonna have to keep my eyes on the used GBA game case, since they always sell their GBA demos as used games.

Nintendo Gaming / The hell? (Players Choice Oddities)
« on: December 13, 2004, 10:10:38 AM »
Okay, we all know that lately Nintendo has been adding a "Best Seller" starburst to some of their newer games. But it seems to vary. Sometimes you'll see a starburst on Paper Mario 2, sometimes you won't. Sometimes it'll be on the right, sometimes it'll be on the left. It's very random and odd.
Well, I saw something at Target today to add to the confusion. A stack of new Smash Bros. Melee, with no yellow "Player's Choice" stripe at all! Instead, they have a "Best Seller" burst in the bottom center of the cover, where the "Nintendo's Best in 4 player free for all!" (or something) used to be. Even more confusing, next to it was The Wind Waker, with both a PC stripe and the starburst on the same copy!
I'm confuserated...

Nintendo Gaming / Alien Hominid

I finally got Alien Hominid yesterday.
OH MY GOD.
Everyone MUST purchase this game. Especially if you're an old school shooter fan. I've been having a blast with it so far.

Nintendo Gaming / "DS Option Pack Detected"
« on: December 04, 2004, 03:51:29 AM »
I've been hearing reports from people using GBA Flash carts in their DS units that when they use the carts in the GBA slot, occasionally they'll get such messages as "DS Option Pack Detected" and being asked if they would like to activate the "Rumble Feature".

Nintendo Gaming / G4TechTV presents "DS Day"
« on: November 20, 2004, 03:10:39 AM »
Okay, I was watching G4 last night, when all of a sudden the show I was watching was pulled back into the top screen of a DS unit that was filling the entire TV screen. On the bottom screen, someone was using Pictochat to say that this Sunday G4 will be showing DS stuff all day long, much like their recent GTA Day and Halo Day.

Perhaps this is Capcom's way of making up for the RE4 blunder...

And do my eyes decieve me or does the bottom left corner say "Resident Evil 4: Free Demo Disc"?

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo's movie trailers
« on: November 06, 2004, 04:57:08 PM »
I know Nintendo occasionally puts out movie trailers in theaters. But after watching the Mario Tennis opening for about the billionth time (and laughing my head off) I thought, hey, why couldn't Nintendo simply put this in front of a movie as sort of an animated short? I mean, it's good, it's funny, and they'd be blatantly advertising Mario Tennis and the Gamecube at the same time! I'm sure there's no chance of this happening, but I thought it'd be cool.
Thoughts?

Nintendo Gaming / Ninja Turtles 2... 2 discs?
« on: October 22, 2004, 03:50:37 PM »
I was nosing around my local Blockbuster when I saw they had the new Ninja Turtles game on the rental wall. I picked it up and opened it up to see if the manual was inside so I could take a look. It wasn't in there, but I was surprised to see that it was in a 2-disc style case. I checked the other copy and it was the same. Now, I know it's possible that Blockbuster could have simply switched the case with something else, but why would they bother on a game that just came out? I shook the rental case (it was white plastic, so I couldn't see inside) and it did indeed sound like there were two discs inside.
I guess I could have simply rented it to find out, but I don't get paid until Monday
Is it a two disc game, or does the second disc hold the Arcade game? Just curious is all.

General Gaming / Help refurbising a couple of N64 games...
« on: October 14, 2004, 04:27:35 PM »
A local video store closed down and I bought a bulk of their boxed N64 games. However, when I got them home, I had found in an attempt to remove the security tags, the store had ripped a good part of the front labels off two of them. I was bummed until I thought... hey, I could just buy some sticker paper, print out new labels and they'll looks just like new!
Now to ask for help.... if any of you have Killer Instict Gold or Castlevania 64 on hand, can you please scan their fronts for me at a high resolution? (like say, 300 dpi)? Just PM me if you can and I can give you an email addy to send them to. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Nintendo Gaming / Super Mario 64 DS... Port or Not a Port?
« on: October 07, 2004, 02:19:41 PM »
Obviously, some of us are a little cranked that Nintendo's launch title for the DS is seeminly a port of Super Mario 64...
(Ian shouts from the sidelines: "A little cranked is putting it mildly!!!")
So I decided to do a bit of research and see if I could find out what is the same and what is different... so, as Mario would say, "Let's a GO!"

Graphics: Okay, when Nintendo announced the DS, they said the graphics would be on par with the N64. But from what I've seen, I think it's fair to say they're comparable to first generation Gamecube games... almost. The overall look is much smoother and the character models are MUCH better than what you found in Super Mario 64.

Levels: Watching the levels, it appears that the maps haven't changed much from SM64. I recognized several stages such as Bob-Omb Mountain and Dry Dry Desert and the infamous Red Carpet Slide. Whether or not the levels will change depending on what character you use isn't really known, but I did see Yoshi battling the Bob-Omb King, by lapping up smaller Bob-Ombs and shooting them back at him.

Story: I went to Nintendo.com and checked out SM64DS's game page and I happened upon the story.
"Answering an invitation, Mario, Luigi and Wario set out for a royal party with Princess Peach. When they arrive at the castle, though, they find it strangely empty. Meanwhile, Yoshi awakes from a rooftop nap to find the castle eerily silent, with Mario, Luigi and Wario nowhere to be seen. Yoshi soon discovers that Bowser has pilfered the castle's Power Stars and imprisoned the Toads in the castle's immense collection of paintings. It's up to the dynamic dino to figure out what happened to Mario, Luigi and Wario and save the day. "

So apparently you start off by playing Yoshi, and you gain access to the others by finding them in other levels. Or maybe perhaps you play through certain characters through certain worlds until they find each other, then you are able to access them all in all the levels.

Gameplay: From what I've seen, it's the usual hop N bop we all know and love. This is from Nintendo.com
"Each of the four main characters has multiple jumping moves that cover great horizontal and vertical distances. Each has unique moves: Yoshi can eat enemies and turn them into eggs that he can throw; Mario can punch, kick and wall-jump to great heights; super-strong Wario can break certain blocks; and Luigi can jump incredibly high. Power Flowers give each character even cooler powers, like invisibility, fire breath or the power to float through the air. "
So each character has a different skill, which probabaly means certain parts of a level can only be reached by certain characters. The hint at "Power Flowers" and "Fire Breath" makes me wonder... are fireballs back in 3-D?

Differences?: Well the ability to play with four players is an obvious difference. And apparently there are at least 30 new Stars to uncover (and new levels to find them in?), not to mention the "tons of new touch sensitive mini-games". As for the 4 player mode, is it battle only, or can you play through story mode with three other players? Perhaps while you're kicking Goomba tail in the Thwomp Fortress, someone else could be playing through Rainbow Ride? And if the levels were connected, that would be sweet. For instance, if a player falls down during Rainbow Ride, he could end up in Thwomp Fortress just in time to help you fight a boss. But again, we don't know the extent yet.

Please, feel free to add anything else you've heard about. But as of now, I don't think this is just a standard port...

(gets beaten by Ian)

Nintendo Gaming / Is the DS is being rushed?
« on: October 05, 2004, 04:20:11 AM »
I'm not saying anything negative about the system or anything, but doesn't it just feel like the system is being rushed? I mean, we're what, a month away from the DS launch and we still know so little about it and it's launch titles! In fact, aside from the Mario 64 game, I don't even know what the launch titles ARE! We don't even know for sure what the Mario 64 game's official name is!

It just seems so strange and different from any other Nintendo system launch. I mean, usually by now we'd know about each game that was coming out, what features they had and how many migs and megs of memory they use.

Anyone else feel this way?
