Oh, you thought we would just give away a Nintendo DS? Well, you’re in for a HUGE shock! Updated with more info and additional prizes.

UPDATE: We have our big winner! Congratulations to Aaron "MegaByte" Kaluszka! Enjoy your DS and have a nice trip!

Congratulations also to Scott H., David E., Matthew W., James M., and Aaron K. (hey!) for scoring copies of Chris Kohler's Power-Up!

Check out the official results!

UPDATE: To all those who have asked about restrictions on the guest, we have some additional information. The winner's guest must be 18 years old as well, however, he or she does not need to depart from the same airport as the winner. PGC strongly recommends caution if you win and decide to take an online friend whom you have never met in person.

UPDATE: During halftime, Chris Kohler will be giving away copies of his excellent book, Power-Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life. If you answer one of Mr. Kohler's questions first, you win! Only registered entrants may participate in this halftime trivia, and each entrant may win no more than one copy. Copies of the book will also be given to the second- and third-place finishers in the main trivia game.

Planet Trivia has been a Planet GameCube tradition for years. During that time we’ve given away promotional posters, games, and even a Game Boy Advance SP with Fire Emblem! But nothing compares in scope to this special planet trivia contest.

On Tuesday, November 16 at 9:30 PM Central Time, Planet GameCube will hold a very special round of Planet Trivia. What will the (eligible) winner win? Why, a free trip to Los Angeles to get your very own Nintendo DS at midnight, November 21st, complete with airfare, a hotel, a Nintendo DS and much more! You even get to invite a friend of your choice along for the adventure! How about that? The full schedule is as follows:

Friday, November 19 - Welcome to LA

Winner and guest will be picked up at the airport in a limousine and

transported to The Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. Upon arrival, he or she

will receive a Nintendo DS prize pack with Nintendo items as well as a

digital camera to capture the following day's events. The winner and guest

will enjoy an afternoon at Hollywood and Highland, including a guided tour

of Kodak Theater, home to the Academy Awards. They will also receive two

tickets to a play/musical and dinner at The Grill on Hollywood.

Saturday, November 20 - Universal Studios Tour-VIP-style

Winner and guest will be given VIP Hollywood treatment with exclusive

behind-the-scenes privileges to Universal Studios' movie and production

facilities. They will receive VIP front-of-the-line and reserve-seating

privileges at theme park attractions and shows.

Then, winner and guest will head over to Universal City Walk next door to the

theme park to catch the official launch of Nintendo DS as the first units go

on sale at EB. They will have VIP privileges at the nearby Hard Rock

restaurant for the event, including complimentary food and beverage, and

will be among the first consumers to get their hands on the new system

during Midnight Madness at the EB store.

Sunday, November 21 - Winner and guest return home

Wowsers, what a weekend! Here’s a recap of everything you could win:

  • 2 Roundtrip airline tickets to Los Angeles from anywhere in the US

  • A limo from LAX to The Renaissance Hotel at Hollywood and Highland

  • 2 night stay at The Renaissance Hotel

  • 1 digital camera

  • A guided tour for two of the Kodak Theater

  • 2 tickets to a play or musical for Friday night

  • Dinner for 2 to The Grill

  • A day for 2 at Universal Studios including VIP passes

  • Dinner for 2 at the Hard Rock Café

  • 1 Nintendo DS prize package

  • $200 spending money

To win this fabulous prize, you will have to prove your skills by answering Nintendo-themed questions both correctly and quickly. The trivia rules remain unchanged from those of standard (non-team) Planet Trivia. However, due to the serious nature of the prize, PGC staff members will be strictly enforcing the chatroom and trivia rules, so be sure you are familiar with both!

    Eligibility for the Big Contest

    REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.

PGC would love for all of our loyal readers to be eligible, but it simply cannot be done. In order to claim the prize as victor of the trivia game, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  • You must be at least 18 years old

  • You must currently live in the United States

  • You can fly out November 19th and return on November 21st

  • You can answer many trivia questions about Nintendo, its systems, and games on those systems :-)

In order to keep things orderly and help protect the victor's well-earned reward, we ask that you register by emailing all of the following information by Monday, November 15 at 11:59 pm Central Time to BigContest@planetgamecube.com:

    -Your full, real name

-Your age as of Tuesday, November 16th 2004

    - Your location (city, state, zip code)

    - Phone number(s) where you can be reached during the day and at night

    - The exact nickname you will use in the chatroom during the trivia game

Technology is not foolproof, and PGC is not responsible for lost or delayed email entries.

Note that this email only registers you to compete in the trivia game; you must actually attend and win the trivia game to win the prize. Please do not bother sending falsified or unqualified email entries. If you lie about your eligibility, you wouldn’t be able to claim and redeem the prize anyway, so don’t bother! If you are not qualified, we ask that you do not register for the trivia event to help minimize the chances of a large tie-breaker .

During trivia, whatever correct answer the judges see first is the one that will be accepted. Here it is again in bold and caps: WHATEVER CORRECT ANSWER THE JUDGES SEE FIRST IS THE ONE THAT WILL BE ACCEPTED.

If the winner of the trivia contest turns out to be ineligible or refuses the prize, the next qualifying runner-up will be rewarded with the prize. If multiple qualifying contestants share the same high score, the host will provide a tie-breaker question, per standard Planet Trivia rules. This holds in the off-chance that the winner forfeits his/her prize after the Tuesday night trivia session, in which case the contestant(s) in 2nd place will be notified via email. If a tie-breaker is required after the main event, the runner-ups and the host will coordinate a time through email ASAP to meet and perform the tie-breaker in a private chatroom session. Once again, PGC asks that you opt out of the trivia contest if you would not be able to accept the prize. You certainly may show up as a spectator and not participate.

If you do not send your registration information, you will find yourself unable to talk in the chatroom during trivia and will therefore be unable to participate. It is VERY strongly recommended that you register your name on the irc.opa-ages.org server before submitting your registration e-mail to help prevent nickname theft.

    To register your nickname:

(User-specified values are displayed in [brackets] below. Do not actually include brackets unless you want them in you nickname or password)

    1) Open an IRC client of your choice (mIRC, Trillian, Bersirc, X-Chat Aqua) and connect to irc.opa-ages.com*, port 6667

    2) To change your nick, type

    /nick [new_nickname]

    3) To register your nick, type

    /msg NickServ Register [your_password] [your_email]

    4) Disconnect from the server, then reconnect. You should be warned that your current name is registered and will be changed automatically in one minute.

    5) To log in as your nick, type

    /msg NickServ IDENTIFY [your_password]

*You may also use irc.gccafe.com, whitewinged-angel.com, or irc.shadow-corp.com

Planet GameCube is not responsible for any IRC issues, including nickname theft, so be sure to connect to the chatroom ahead of time to work out any problems you may have.

All information collected for the Big Contest will only be used to identify the contestants and secure contact information for the victor in the possibility that he or she may be unavailable after trivia is over due to technical or logistical difficulties.

    The Big Contest

The actual contest will take place in the PGC chatroom #planetchat, on the same server (irc.opa-ages.com:6667). See the registration directions above or the PlanetChat FAQ for information on how to connect. The trivia starts at 9:30 Central Time, but PGC recommends you arrive at 9:00 PM Central in case you need to address a personal technical difficulty, especially if this is your first time using IRC chat or your first time playing Planet Trivia. Remember, anyone can come and watch the excitement, but only those who have registered at BigContest@planetgamecube.com and are at least 18 years old will be able to talk!

For more details on the chatroom, read our PlanetChat FAQ, and be sure to read the Planet Trivia rules so you do not get banned right away.

    Official Rules:

Planet GameCube cannot be held responsible for anything that might go wrong during the registration process, the trivia game itself, the redemption of your prize, or during the trip itself. Basically, you can’t sue us for anything that happens to you while participating in this contest. We cannot be responsible for any computer glitches, server crashes, lightning strikes, or any of the other crazy stuff that could happen to keep you from having a less than ideal chance to win this prize or enjoy the prize, should you win it. By registering via email for this contest, you are agreeing to these terms as well as all other regulations set forth in the Planet Trivia rules and Planet Chat rules, linked to above. Violation of those rules may result in your disqualification from the contest, at the discretion of the Planet GameCube staff. Planet GameCube reserves the right to change the conditions of this contest at any time. This contest is not open to Planet GameCube staff members or Nintendo employees or their immediate families.

Holy crap PGC, you guys are awesome. I only wish I was 18 so I could at least say I entered.

    Good Luck to all!

Michael "TYP" says: WHOOOO! In case you are wondering, Ty "S-U-P-E-R" Shughart currently plans to host! I am very excited and proud to be a part of this event.

Hey, way to contribute with your post Ty!

There have been some questions regarding restrictions on the guest--namely age and location. We hope to clarify this by Monday.

    Hostile CreationNovember 14, 2004

Awesome. Granted I remember to do so, I'll make an attempt at this. I'm not really good at trivia, though, and I'm not sure that I'd be able to go anyway. Great opportunity nonetheless.

    PlugabugzNovember 14, 2004

I hope you lot remember to do this a second time for the conveniently overlooked people in Europe face-icon-small-tongue.gif

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusNovember 14, 2004

Forget europe, what about New Zealand? But seriously face-icon-small-tongue.gif Damn wicked if I was in the U.S.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 14, 2004

You know, this would probably be great fun, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm on crappy dial-up and there's bound to be lag galore....

Oh well, guess I'll have to settle for going to Wal-Mart to get my DS. face-icon-small-wink.gif

    er111801November 14, 2004

Too bad I'm in Canada. I mean we border you guys so close but we're not in any cool contests face-icon-small-sad.gif

    Bartman3010November 14, 2004

Wow, how do you guys get to do this?

Edit: I mean, host this contest.

    PolemistisNovember 14, 2004

OMG THATS BLOODY HUGE! EH? Will Reggie be there?!?

    GamefreakNovember 14, 2004

Hey if you are in Canada, then you can just drive down to the nearest US airport to take you to LA right? I mean, I'm assuming the only reason Canadians aren't eligible is because PGC can only get tickets from American airports. Unless there is some other rule if you can get yourself to an airport in the US then what's the big deal?

    To bad I'm only 17. I don't turn 18 until June....

    Kirby_PopStarNovember 14, 2004

Thing is, I already live in Los Angeles. Not only that, but I've reserved my Nintendo DS at the EB Games in Universal City Walk! So, I'll be there anyway! I hope to meet up with the winner of this contest and congratulate them. ^_^

    I'm 17 myself. -_- If only I were 18, I'd enter in a heartbeat!

Sorry guys, we would really like to include younger people and those outside the U.S., but it couldn't be done for numerous reasons in this contest. The prize is coming to us as a package, and it carries with it those restrictions, so there's nothing we can do about them.

    KnowsNothingNovember 14, 2004

Ah well, it's not like I'd win anyway. I've been part of one planet triva and one radio trivia so far, and I can proudly say that I've never gotten one point face-icon-small-thumbsup.gif

Anyway, good luck to all who enter! =D

    holla planetgamecube

    MikemnNovember 14, 2004

What the hell... I can't enter just because I live in Canada!? Geez, that sucks. This is exactly the reason (along with like a billion other contests) why I constantly bash Canada and call it inferior.

Anyway, good luck to those who are eligible.

    RobageejamminNovember 14, 2004

Agh, I was looking forward to another video to send in. But wow, you guys have come a long way to actually be able to do this. I'll give it a shot in trivia. I wont even score a point im sure but what the heck.

WindyManSteven Rodriguez, Staff AlumnusNovember 14, 2004

Those whoe have been participating in Planet Trivia for the longest time will have the advantage.

Don't you wish all of you have been doing it since the beginning to prepare you for this day?

    KDR_11kNovember 14, 2004

Mikemn: Most contests include Canada. Well, all of Canada except for Quebec.

    EricEnderNovember 14, 2004

if you already live in LA, do we just circle around on a plane... hehehe

DrZoidbergJuan Schwartz, Staff WriterNovember 15, 2004

I'm 13 and living on the moon, does that mean I can't enter? face-icon-small-smile.gif

I've seen some of the questions you'll be asked ladies and gentlemen, I hope you've studied everything about Nintendo ever emot-zoid1.gif

    mantidorNovember 15, 2004

Im absolutely sure that latinamerica would be the last place an international contest of this kind takes place T_T, oh well, some day, probably when Im too old to play video games, Ill be Eligibile.

    Joshums2November 15, 2004

Hay guys how about a contest sometime where everyone has a chance (i.e. non-trivia)

Actually, we could have just done a "name out of a hat" contest, but we felt a trivia event would be more fun and would prevent the random guy who doesn't even care about Nintendo from winning.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 16, 2004

You could always just *give* it to me.

    I wouldn't complain. face-icon-small-wink.gif

    KulockNovember 16, 2004

I know people are going to say otherwise, but I couldn't get a thing done on that server, and I'm sure it wasn't my connection. I know the popularity is what caused it to lag to high heaven, but it doesn't make for an appealing contest when it takes several minutes just to get into the channel, and when I do, the lag is so bad.

I tried multiple mirrors with the same result.

I'm happy the contest was so popular for PGC, but I really don't think the IRC backbone was strong enough for what you organized and offered. A contest I was supposed to be excited about I feel quite put off by now, and I don't think it's anyone's fault in particular, except the response was really underestimated, and, at least in my observation, that caused some serious negative side effects to this.

Congratulations to the winner, whoever he or she may be, as well as whoever wins the books during the half-time sequence. I apologize for sounding like such a wet blanket, the technical problems (which I'm sure I'll get two or three replies to saying that they experienced no problems and that it must've been my fault) just made for a very disappointing experience.

I'm sorry you had problems, Kulock. IRC isn't perfect, and we were well aware of this when we chose that as the medium for this contest. However, given the time constraints the staff felt we could not execute some more elaborate format for trivia (such as an email system like someone suggested in GA forums). And we didn't want to just put names in a hat, as I stated above.

In the past we have done contests involving submissions; if given the option I think PGC would do something along those lines for another contest of this magnitude.

    ShanDNovember 17, 2004

Congrats MegaByte - and I'd personally be up for another trivia giveaway ... but one that minors can participate in. face-icon-small-wink.gif
