It has been an exciting week for Nintendo fans, with release dates and new details for Mario, Metroid, and many other games. Thankfully, Jon is back to help us process it all. He also dishes out impressions of Disaster: Day of Crisis, has an early look at Mega Man 10, and some final thoughts on Super Mario RPG. But wait, there's more! Jonny talks up No More Heroes 2 (with Classic Controller), Greg has guarded praise for Muramasa, and James wraps up Miles Edgeworth in this dense New Business segment.

After the break, we announce the winner of the Game of the Decade poll and briefly discuss those results. Thanks once again to everyone who voted, nominated, and organized this lengthy but fascinating process! Then we finally catch up on a portion of your Listener Mail. It starts with a couple of gushing letters that were so kind and eloquent that we had to read them on the air; one also leads to some thoughts on our plans (or lack thereof) to be professionally involved in gaming. Next is a more substantive discussion of Metroid Fusion, with detailed criticisms but also some praise and appreciation for the game that revived 2D Metroid after nearly a decade of dormancy. Finally, a counterpoint to all the congratulations -- one reader expresses great disappointment in our recent elevation of Majora's Mask over Wind Waker, and we respond as best we can.

Heading to PAX East in March? If you can stand to miss part of Chris Kohler's panel or Wil Wheaton's keynote, please consider attending our own panel, Radio Free Nintendo: A Live Nintendo Podcast for Grown-Ups. Jonny, James, Jon, Karl, and Mike will be in person to discuss Nintendo games and take your questions, directly from the audience! There are also plans to have a social gathering with RFN fans that weekend -- check the forum thread for details. If you can't make it to PAX, don't worry! We plan to record everything for the podcast feed.

We're always looking for great Listener Mail to read and discuss on the show, so please send your questions or comments! (We really love seeing your praise and feedback regarding the show itself; however, in the interest of time, we may edit your letter to be read on the podcast.)

Seven minutes into the podcast and I'm loving it!!!!! You guys are great!

It's so strange that Jonny and I seem to start games at the same time - I just started on No More Heroes 2.

I agree with most of what you said - I remember the head-bustingly stupid coconut collecting mini-game from the first version all too well. I have to disagree with the notion that buying new weapons is useless, though. I spent some time gathering the cash for the third beam katana, and it's leaps and bounds better than the default sword (though, as you said, it's so easy that it doesn't necessarily matter).

I am only partially into the episode but had to stop to comment on something before I forgot. Greg, that Mario sound gag was pure genius... you managed to merge gloating with genuine laugh out loud humor. Well played.

Jonny, a friend of mine had that one-handed PS1 controller and I got to give it a try.  It's actually a pretty great idea, and the controller works pretty well.  I've always wondered why there wasn't more creativity in controller design, because that one-handed RPG controller always really stuck in my mind.

Overall, great show again this week guys!

I remember Nintendo Power featuring a one-handed SNES controller than only came out in Japan.  I guess the US didn't have a large enough RPG market at the time to justify its release.

Great show as usual, guys! Jon's discussion of Disaster: Day of Crisis made me wish my import copy of it would arrive soon, and sure enough, both the import games I ordered came in the mail before the episode ended.

So Disaster was cheesier in the Japanese version? I remember the trailer having more cheese than the actual game ("They kidnapped... HER!" is in the trailer but the actual game has a decent dialogue in that place). I did like the driving sections though so not all non-shooting parts are bad but you only played the very early parts of the game so you probably didn't see them yet.

What I found hilarious about the first combat part was that there was an entire SWAT team with automatic weapons and body armor sent in that was losing against the ex-special-forces terrorists so your rescue worker dude grabs his pistol and goes in to "show them how it's done". Okay, he's also ex-spec-ops but that's still hilarious how he runs in with his tiny pistol.

As for Fusion, I had more issues with being restricted in where I can go and how I HAD to talk to the computer at the beginning and end of every sector before it would unlock the doors. I agree that they should have done more with the Metroid blood aspect, those morphing enemies were just a pain and it just felt unsatisfying to shoot enemies just to have them pixelate and turn into blobs you have to catch.

As dicussed in the begining of the show, When I first start listening to RFN the John, Johnny, Jonathan, thing drove me absolutely nutZ! When I wanted to comment and write in, I had no idea who was who. I thought they were THREE different dudes and having James Jones didn't make it any easier with all them DAMN J's.

But now I feel like there my best friends locked inside of my iPhone......

I'm almost sold on getting No More Heroes 2. But the next few months are going to be brutal enough as it is. Hmm...

I might've missed it since I was watching the Olympic closing ceremony at the same time, but Earthbound doubled the controls - L=A and Select=B - specifically to allow for 1-hand play. They even call this out in the strategy guide.

Great show as always, I'm glad to hear people stick up for Metroid Fusion, it seems to be a trend that when a game comes out that is well received, but not quite up to par with other entries in the series that people direct hatred towards it that is not deserve. Fusion was a great game, though not as good as Super Metroid or Zero Mission. Is that terrible? Heck no, it was still a well crafted game. I'm hoping that Other M integrates the best parts of Super Metroid, Zero Mission AND Fusion.

I've probably completed Fusion three times since 2001. So yeah, I like it plenty.

Eerie conversaiton considering I bought Zero Mission and Fusion this weekend. I played both of them, and enjoyed both of them, but I never owned them.

I forgot how incredible Zero Mission is, and I kind of regret playing it first, since I remember Fusion not being quite as good.

*Sigh* :'(

The more I learn about how the podcast or rather this site in general is put together the more I fall in love with it. The fact that this site is ran off of pure dedication to good journalism, factual information, unbiased criticism, and a true love and respect of all aspects of gaming makes me proud of just being able to be apart of it and the experience I get out of it.

I relate the ability to have an openly opinionated forum like this, that you all provide, to the same reason I  serve my country. So we all may have our own opinions.

I'm sure you get plenty of praise from all of my fellow Nintendites that enjoy all the things that NWR brings to us but I do want to take this time to truly thank the entire NWR Staff and the intelligent fans that make this, in my opinion, the best online gaming community out there......PERIOD

Sir, you almost made me cry.

Thanks for the kind words!

I kind of always assumed that Proto Man was more powerful just because he was just designed as a soldier-bot, or whatever.  According to the original game manual, Mega Man was presented just a maintenance robot who could adapt himself to use a lot of tools.  That's why he had the ability to copy other powers; other than that, I think at least in the first game, he was presented as an underdog fighting more powerful robots.  But that's thinking way too much about this.

Personally, I'm still annoyed that they took away the slide move from Mega Man in 9 and 10.  I don't really miss the charge shot so much.

A few episodes ago, someone (Greg, I think) drew a humorous comparison between Mega Man and Sylar from Heroes.  That still makes me laugh.  Perhaps that's how Dr. Light convinces Mega Man to attack his fellow robots and cannibalize their powers; Mega Man's motivation is to be "special."  I'll never look at Mega Man the same way again.
