On this very special episode of Radio Free Nintendo...

We often get requests for the original RFN crew members to appear on the show; now you're getting a special treat, because this episode has all four classic podcasters, and none of the current crew is around to interfere with their antics!

Co-founders Evan Burchfield and Mike Sklens join "Nintendo Pirates" Karl Castaneda and Stan Ferguson to discuss recent games, RFN trivia, and their frustrations with Nintendo since leaving the staff of our fine website. Believe it or not, this is the first time all four of these guys have been on a show together!

Note: Your regularly scheduled program will continue this Sunday, with RFN Episode 156. Enjoy this bonus edition, full of nostalgia and immaturity!

Nice, two RFNs this week!  ;D  *goes to download*  Now you guys just need to have an Episode 103 reunion somewhere down the line.  ;)

Reunion special?? KICK ASS!

Just for that I'd rate this podcast a 7.9

Though the Tim Rogers story was interesting. I loved hearing about the behind the scenes stuff through the years

i agree with zap, I enjoy hearing about stuff that happens that we usually dont hear about. Interesting stuff makes for interesting stories. Loved the reunion, haven't heard from Evan in forever.

Good episode, guys. Well, except for the reprised Sheik discussion.

vuduAugust 01, 2009

Two guys who hate Nintendo talking to two guys who don't play video games anymore?

This is going to be a long episode ....

Just noticed this, this should make for some pretty awesome listening tomorrow.

Classic RFN for the win.

We've had Mike and Karl on recently, and that's great, but I'd really like to hear Evan more often.  He's got really great ideas on games journalism and games as art.  I know we've heard those rants before, but still.

Karl's trivia questions are really tough! I cracked up as just how much prep he seemed to put into that segment.

Man that Rogers character sounds like a complete boner.  Like an honest to god erection.

I'd love to hear Evan take on the writing of Malstrom sometime.

AVAugust 03, 2009

a rambling mess. no focus at all. no idea what's going on and why I should care.

sorry the new rfn is vastly superior, even random rants are more interesting.

having some clips of the episodes would have helped allot. I remember some of the stuff they talked about ( magic the gathering) but it just felt like they vomited this up .

if another reunion happens, i won't be joining.

gojiraAugust 03, 2009

I didn't listen to the older episodes so I was a little unsure whether to listen to this or not.  But it was actually entertaining hearing their insights.

This was clearly catered to those of us who have been listening to RFN since the beginning.  If you didn't, it's not a surprise you didn't enjoy it.

Thankfully I refused to listen to it for various reasons.

I very rarely listened to RFN before the new crew took over, but I still really enjoyed this episode, largely becuase I was amused by the trivia banter, anecdotes about E3, a certain former "staffer" I don't think I ever even met, before or after he was fired, in spite of being at that E3.

I worked really hard on that, it's true! I listened to a bunch of old RFN that morning - probably for like two hours.

Anyway, sorry it wasn't your bag, Adolph. It was a very stream-of-consciousness production, and was never really meant to be anything else. Whenever we do these, they're mostly about getting together and making asses out of ourselves - some people dig it, and others don't. I definitely wouldn't want anyone thinking that this episode is indicative of a regular RFN episode, though (thank goodness it's not numbered) - the new crew's one of those rare teams that can be informative and professional, but still be goofy and entertaining. We just figured we'd pop our head in, tell some dirty jokes, rag on Nintendo, and be on our merry way.

Oh, and GP, I'm not sure what those various reasons might be, but you can never be sure you'll like or dislike something until you give it a go. You might just be surprised.

I looked up Tim Rogers' two reviews on the site (Soul Calibur II and Splinter Cell), and holy crap he's a wordy son of a bitch. I didn't know someone could dick-wave for that long.

ShyGuyAugust 04, 2009

Holy Crap, how did I miss this??

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusAugust 04, 2009

I am saddened by the Nintendo hate.

I was amused, however, when you guys discussed handling PR and the absolute nightmare that it is. The EA part was particularly funny and unbelievably accurate. Recently Neal figured out how to make magic happen with them and since then we have been on a roll. Don't think we've missed a single EA review copy from that point...

I shall remain silent so I do not insult certain individuals and leave it at that!

BboyAugust 08, 2009

You really shouldn't pass judgement on Punch-Out!! until you've played title defense, because it makes it worth it, imo. If it's different enough that I can lose to Glass Joe, it's different enough.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorAugust 08, 2009

I'd definitely like to get some more play time with it, Bboy - just not necessarily at the price point it's at right now. Though, to be honest, that has just as much to do with my willingness to dish out $50 for any game as with my judgement on its inherent value.

Also, I've said it in the past, but I think it bears repeating: None of us really hate Nintendo. We play up that gag to be hyperbolic. Disappointed? Probably. Frustrated? Definitely. But we're all still fans in some capacity - we just don't agree with some of their investments and recent developments.

Except Sklens - that dude's blood turns to boiling vinegar when he's talking Wii.

Not really.

Okay, kind of.

Mad World was great?

BboyAugust 09, 2009

Oh, yeah, I can totally understand that, I'm just saying I would give it another chance when the price drops down.

ShyGuyAugust 09, 2009

Sklens is a hater,  I can respect that.
I miss Evan, NWR needs to start literary reviews so  he can write for the site again.
Stan seemed out of it. Really didn't want to be there?
Karl has proven himself the best podcaster of the old guard over the long run. Keep us informed when you do a new podcast Karl!

noname2200August 10, 2009

I only started listening to the podcast a few months back, so these are mostly new voices to me. Had I tuned in before the current crew, I probably would not have kept listening; it was a little too unfocused for my tastes, and I can't really relate to some of the views expressed. That said, it sounded like you guys had a lot of fun (some more than others), so if y'all get a hankering to go again in the future I wish you all the best.

And for the record, Madworld was one of the most overrated games of this generation, even more than GTA IV.

Yeah, I was very much out of it.  Lot's of things going on during that day, none of them perky.  On top of that, I didn't have a mic (hence the lovely background noise) and I got cut off halfway through the first segment.  It was frustrating.  Plus, I really had nothing interesting to add as I've had a very dull and non-videogame oriented life as of late.  And my job in medical billing doesn't allow for interesting tales.

God forbid, I was almost emo.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorAugust 14, 2009

You just better man the fuck up for 203, dude. We gotta wreck that ep.

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusAugust 14, 2009

Well i just tried popping in Lost Odyssey, but the DVD either has a scratch or is dirty so it's not loading past a certain spot.  There goes my attempt to return to gaming.  Maybe we can have a segment talking about Popcap games.

Can't wait, I wasn't around for 103, but going back to it it is the funniest episode.
