This episode starts off with chatter upon Animal Crossing and Retro Game Challenge, plus a bunch of games on other systems, including a bit of Soul Calibur 4 vs. Street Fighter 4 action. Then we complete a round of RetroActive, with coverage of the final Boos and final boss in Luigi's Mansion. We're taking a break from RetroActive next week, then it's on to Eternal Darkness! Be sure to drop your suggestions for upcoming games in the forums, and look out for the next poll to be launched soon.

After the break, it's time for Listener Mail. Zelda's save system, rumors on NWR, and a 60-second game design challenge are all up to bat. The show ends with a survey of recent news developments, from Commodore 64 on Virtual Console to details of the new Dead Space game for Wii.

FYI, I love mystery dungeon games if you want to hire me for mystery dungeon games DO IT!

Waiting for it to go up on iTunes...

It was up on iTunes at the time you posted for me. Strange.
Listening to it now. Hooray!

Did you select refresh/update?

Aww shucks! I got mentioned in the RetroActive. Now I feel special  :)

About Luigi's Mansion, I thought that I could loosely control Luigi's movement. Maybe it only felt that way but I seemed to be able to direct my path while sucking ghosts to avoid obstacles such as bananas and poison 'shrooms.

On the matter of DSi Ware killer apps. Would a new World of Goo game be noteworthy for you? I think a DS version would be pretty sweet. Though ever with that I would need at the very least six must-have titles on DSiW before I would even consider getting one. I am quite happy with my Lite and I heavily use the GBA slot for old games (not carpel tunnel hero though).

Loved the episode. Thanks for your guys' work on it.

Maybe delete and re-subscribe would work? Or you could just D/L it individually on MP3.

Please tell us which feed you subscribe to (MP3 or AAC -- it will be the latter if you subscribed through the iTunes store).  That will help us to check for errors in the feed, if you are still having trouble that is.

Aw crud, as Reviews Editor I'll be the one burdened with the task of delegating the next Mystery Dungeon game. Thanks for reminding me. :-\

They announced a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game, too...

Speaking of that, James' profile does have his currently playing listed as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

PlugabugzFebruary 23, 2009

Jonny... i can get Mirror's Edge for £20. Should i indulge?

Depends on your capacity for patience and skill at very nit-picky timing-based gameplay.  I rated ME a 7 on GameFly.  It's definitely worth playing... worth owning, well that just depends.  There's some very cool new DLC for people who are into the time trials, which are a good part of the game (if you can deal with the controls and frequent deaths).

I thought World of Goo was over-rated. It's a decent game, but far from the best WiiWare game of 2008. I got it as a gift and thus am not upset, but I probably would have been had I spent $15 on it. I thought Defend Your Castle was more fun and worth more money than WOG.

PlugabugzFebruary 23, 2009

Right now i'm still forcing myself through Strong Bad episode 1... I bought it to see what the interest was all about and i'm still meh. There's just no puzzle element to it like Zack & Wiki to hook me in. After i'm done i'll go grab World of Goo and Onslaught.

I'll think i'll rent Mirror's Edge instead. Once i get around to buying a 3 that is ;)

kraken613February 23, 2009

I got it. I was on my iPhone and it wasn't there or the actual iTunes store but found out it was in the actual feed already downloaded....

I'm about halfway done!

Some Multiplatform "ports" come across well on the Wii without having to change genres: Shaun White, Skate, COD:World at War, plus Overlord looks like it will be good.

Depends on what all the game is trying to do. Didn't they really change Skate it for Wii? World at War was a good port but lacked many of the online features. Overlord never had complex visuals or other features that were "next generation", though even there they had to cut the troop number in half.

Other than Balance Board support, I think Skate It is a pretty close port of the original game.  Never interested me, though.  I'm trying to rent Shaun White soon, as it was fun at E3 and sounds like a good product.

Wasn't Skate It the one that takes place in an abandoned city for the Wii version?

ShyGuyFebruary 24, 2009

Yeah, but it makes sense in the Skate Universe continuity: A monster has attacked the city from Skate 1 and it was evacuated. You fight mecha-Godzilla as the end boss in Skate-It. 360 front flip for massive damage! People repopulated the city in Skate 2.

To add to my Wii-Next Gen separate but equal list: COD3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Sonic Unleashed*, Star Wars:TFU, Harry Potter* both Tomb Raiders* Transformers* and Geometry Wars.

All made with multiplatform in mind (including PS2). Geometry Wars is far from a high tech game.

ShyGuyFebruary 24, 2009

Blargh! What's your point? That technically complex games can't be ported down? Well, World of Warcraft wouldn't be too hot ported down from PC onto the 360 either. But Orange Box ported down just fine.

Depends how big of a drop it is. From 360 to Wii is much bigger then PC to 360 (Not to mention the Half-Life 2 engine is quite old).

StratosFebruary 24, 2009

Don't forget Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2.
The Godfather and all three Lego games were also nice.

Why does it have to matter? Do you not think that Force Unleashed or Godfather or any other game needed to be made along side the other/lead SKUs?

Godfather came out much later -a good six months later. Most of the Wii versions were developed by different studios. Pi did Rock Band 2 for Harmonix. Chrome worked on Force Unleashed.
In fact, Force Unleashed is radically different from the HD version in design choices and menu layout compared to the others. Considering things like this, I don't see how making a game with multiplatform in mind makes that much of a big deal.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 24, 2009

Godfather was created on the PS2 so getting it to Wii was not a big jump. Something like Dead Space would require some massive reworking and would most likely lose quite a bit that made the game good. Something like Force Unleashed was pretty much a physics demo so they could axe that.

StratosFebruary 24, 2009

A whole lot more than the Physics and Euphoria engine were cut from that game.
I played the 360 build at a friends house first and then a week later a Wii owning friend rented it and I played it with him. The difference was shocking to say the least. Even the menus for getting powers are vastly different.

I think a lot has to do with the developer's and publisher's goals. Are they just trying to make a financially cheap, watered-down port by trying to squeeze as much of the HD game into a Wii disk? Or rather are they adjusting to the Wii's strengths and weakness' in the case of Overlord? How they decide to go about making the Wii edition will determine what comes out of it.
Soul Calibur 4, RE 5, Prince of Persia and any number of other HD only games could flourish on the Wii as well. There are feasible engines from previous games on Gamecube and Wii that could be used as a basis for making successful Wii games.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 24, 2009

Over the last week or so I'm getting more excited for Dead Space Extraction's potential for not only the lighgun genre but as a solid continuation of the Dead Space franchise. Should be really interesting considering a HUGE strength of Wii is in regards to aiming and motion controls (I'd love to see some creative uses of Wii motion plus in the game).

StratosFebruary 24, 2009

Honestly, I am too after playing Onslaught oddly enough. It feels very arcade like and struck me as an 'off-rails shooter'. It made me very excited at the possibilities Extraction has as a genre pushing rail-shooter.

360 to Wii: 720p to 480p = 240p
PC to 360: 2048x1536 to 720p = like a kajillion pixels

360 to Wii = 512 RAM to 90mb something RAM = about 5 times the RAM
PC to 360 = 4gb to 512mb = about 8 times the RAM

IN YO FACE

On the subject, I would pay money to see James review the next mystery dungeon game. Maybe EA will port Mass Effect 2 and make it a mystery dungeon clone.

TheFleeceFebruary 24, 2009

Thanks for mentioning Boktai!!!!! I played that game for a whole Summer and I remember if I beat it, but once Jonny started asking about a specific game the first thing I thought of was Boktai. Those were good times, I wouldn't mind playing it again. Good show!

While Godfather was created on the PS2, the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii versions pretty much look like the PS2 version (I played the Wii and PS3 version of the game and they look almost identical).

Just saying. :)

After hearing about the Boo padding and control gripes (as well as the camera, graphical, and difficulty issues with the final boss), does anyone suppose that Luigi's Mansion was a rushed release? A lot of the other graphical effects are pretty nice in the game, but maybe the developers made those through playing with the GameCube's new technology long before they began focused game development. I remember hearing that Melee was pushed out the door to be within the launch window. So, was Nintendo not quite ready for their own console's release? (Is this already common knowledge on these boards?) If so, I guess it had to have been a timing thing; Nintendo must have considered their competition (PS2 becoming a juggernaut) and figured they couldn't wait beyond that holiday season to release whatever they had.

I don't think I've given any praise for this podcast yet since joining the forums, but it's fantastic. I've enjoyed listening to it over the years and noticing its slow evolution into what it is now. It's one of the main reasons I've kept up with the site and eventually joined the forums. No wonder the site's focus is shifting toward podcasts and blogs (though I guess the Intertubes in general are doing this nowadays). Keep up the good work! (And thanks for including one of my posts in the podcast.)

Most if not all launch-day releases are rushed. I agree LM was probably rushed; I think in Melee's case, it was simply kicked out the door out of necessity. The Melee team could have tweaked and added new characters forever.

LOL, good point, I didn't think about that. Quick, what other games are universally hated by the staff that I could use to get on staff!  ;)

TJ SpykeApril 05, 2009

I think Nintendo is generally the opposite of rushing launch games. Hell, Nintendo pushed back the release date of the N64  several months just because Miyamoto wanted to continue working on Super Mario 64. Eventually Yamauchi told him the game was good enough (yet even with the extra few months the N64 only had 3 launch games in Japan and 2 in North America).

I wasn't involved, but I'm pretty sure it was not.
