You guys are pumping these out more quickly than I can listen to them.  I love it, though!  This episode and the remainder of 131 should get me through my workout today. :)

Whoa, that *was* quick.  I'll try to listen today.

kraken613February 05, 2009

Ill listen later! Im downloading it on my iPhone right now!

We've been catching up, that's all.  If all goes well, there should be about a week between episodes.  Greg has done an amazing job with the editing since James got into the thick of awards season.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 05, 2009

Greg has his serfs do all the work, it isn't a fair comparison.

TJ SpykeFebruary 05, 2009

Is there a reason the iTunes version is m4a rather than mp4? It prevents it from being transferred to the PSP or a lot of MP3 players. I know there is a MP3 version, but it's 20MB larger in size and doesn't have the luxury of downloading in iTunes.

cloud858rkFebruary 05, 2009

The MP3 feed is broken, just thought I'd let you know in case you didn't notice.

I'll look into it.

The AAC feed is m4a because Apple feels the need to create file formats for no reason other than their own personal joy.

TJ SpykeFebruary 06, 2009

Damn, I thought it was Apple's fault. Why do they not allow MP4 when they do allow MP3? I subscribe to 4 other podcasts on iTunes and they are all MP3.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 06, 2009

One other thing about CT that makes it so unique (at least for the time) was the fact you can technically "beat" the game so early on and fight the final boss. Not to mention the massive amount of endings.

Isn't MP4 a video format?

Also, I've recently started playing Chrono Trigger.  I'm maybe 11 hours in, and I'm still at the part Greg was talking about with Frog & Magus, apparently before my mind is going to be blown by major plot development.

And so far?  I've been pretty bored with it.  It's not bad, but doesn't feel any more interesting than any of the other Square 16 Bit RPGs.  I do like the battle mechanic, and I like that my non-battling characters get some XP (although it appears to be less, as they're levelling, just slower than my main guys) but I'm still waiting to have the same kind of reaction everyone else seemed to.

I'm at what I think is the top of Magus' tower, last I saved.  Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

TJ, you can subscribe to any podcast through iTunes.  Just copy the MP3 feed URL, open iTunes, click Advanced > Subscribe to Podcast, and paste in that URL.

We chose to list the AAC feed in the iTunes store because it is enhanced and has smaller files at the same quality.

Just listened!

Great show as usual! Great to have these a bit more regular than it got for awhile!

Unlike Jonny, I don't think Chrono Trigger is the best game ever, but I didn't play it when it first game out, so I don't have the perspective of how it compares to its contemporaries.  I still love the game, but I think its legendary status is a tad over the top. If CT is the first notable Japanese RPG to ditch the random battle encounters, that's a HUGE deal and I may need to reassess my stance.

AVFebruary 07, 2009

Chrono Trigger is a game I want to buy during Summer, this seems like something I will enjoy. I love Time travel stuff. That little example in the podcast just really got me excited. I hope that example is one of many things that happen.

i'm glad news is back. Wii has gotten allot of positive news lately and I want to hear you guys talk about it.

I actually didn't play CT until the PSone compilation came out. Even though I don't think it is the greatest game ever (I don't think I'd even put it in my top 10 list), the game does so many exciting new things like what were mentioned in the podcast. You have to respect it and in my case I do enjoy it.

I think to truly appreciate it you would have had to play it when it was released.  It came out during a time period when JRPGs weren't totally commoditized and saturating the market like they are today.  It was TRULY fresh at the time of its release.

But I appreciate it and I didn't play it when it was released! So that means Lindy is wrong. ;)

I'm saying that if you did play it at launch, it likely would be one of your top 10 ever, if not in your top 5.

I really doubt it. RPGs have always had trouble making it into my top 10. SMRPG is the only one in my top 10. CT and FFIV would probably be in my top 15 though.

See, to me Super Mario RPG doesn't hold up as well as Chrono Trigger. Aside from perhaps Pokemon, SMRPG was my first Japanese RPG--certainly my first Square game. You would think that it therefore holds a very dear place in my heart, seeing how much I like Mario.

However, while i like SMRPG, Chrono Trigger--which I played YEARS later--is much dearer to my heart. Heck, I think Mario & Luigi: Sueprstar Saga--SMRPG's fairly direct sequel--is significantly better in both personality and gameplay. (Having Luigi doesn't hurt, either!)

Well I have to disagree with SMRPG but it is a preference, the game has so much goofy charm and I really loved the battle system. M&L is a pretty big departure from SMRPG which was a more traditional RPG.

SundoulosFebruary 09, 2009

I sort of missed Chrono Trigger in the SNES era (I was a sophomore in college in 96...yes I'm that old), and I didn't have the time or money for it.  Once it came out on the PSOne, and I just couldn't get very far into it without losing interest.  The load times on that Playstation port series really turned me off.

In a way, I'm glad of that, because I'm really enjoying CT DS, and I'm experiencing Chrono Trigger for the first time.  Perhaps it's just because I'm very used to JRPG games from that era, but I've loved the experience so far.

It does feel unique compared to a lot of JRPGs I've played, mostly because of the moderate freedom it gives to you in how you want to play the game.  For intance, there aren't many games that make you lose the main character and give you the option to revive him or not.  I actually wonder if this instance helped spread the rumours that you could revive Aeris in FF7?  It's not perfect by any means, but I've had more fun with this than with the FF IV and FF VI DS remakes I've played recently; that's probably because I have Final Fantasy burnout, though.

I'm also a sucker for Akira Toriyama's art style, I was one of those geeky kids who actually caught the old  Dragon Warrior/Quest cartoon that was aired over in the west briefly before being deemed to violent.  I've had a soft spot in my heart for the art style, even if half of his characters look like his other characters in Dragonball.  Consequently, this is why I also love playing the Dragon Quest remakes as well.  I'm eagerly awaiting DQ V.

I <3 SMRPG as well.  So much so that I bought it immediately after showing up on the VC, even though I my backlog hasn't permitted me to go play it again yet.  It's still one of my favorite RPGs.

It's not often you see double-posts in the same post.  ;-)

I always heard that Aeris was planned to be revived in FF7, but sometime during development they changed that and made her death permanent.  Supposedly there are some hacks that expose old code on the disc(s) to prove this.

SundoulosFebruary 10, 2009

^^Whoops!  I'm not sure how that happened.  I sometimes compose posts in notebook, so I was probably just trigger happy with the cut and paste.

Memorable Videogame Myths

Yeah.  That's consistent with what I've read what I heard about the Aeris/Aerith character.

There were similar rumors that Schala could somehow be saved in Chrono Trigger as well.  Given everything else that you could possibly do in the game, I'm surprised the developers didn't include it as an optional "perfect" ending.

StratosFebruary 13, 2009

I had always thought that Nintendorks shut down years ago.
I wasn't too impressed with the Nintendorks podcast. A lot of "Um...(DEAD AIR)...Um"."

Then again it could have blended together with the plethora of podcasts (mostly gaming) I listened to this last Summer working graveyard shifts for 10 hours a night four days straight a week.
You guys were my favorite along w/ 1up Yours, R.I.P.

There are a number of horrible sounding podcasts from all manners of poor editing, conversation and personality.

Speaking of 1up, have any of you noticed the new 'Listen UP' podcast on the same feed as 1UP Yours? I haven't listened to it yet. A little nervous as to how it will be.

Sratos, what other gaming podcasts do you listen to?  Here's my list:

RFN (duh)
Player One Podcast (consistently entertaining, more Nintendo friendly)
Joystiq Podcast (not Nintendo friendly at all, but very very entertaining)
In-Game-Chat (formerly Evil Avatar Radio.  Also not Nintendo friendly, but one guy goes on funny rants sometimes)
Rebel FM (Formerly 1up FM)

RFN
Just started listening to Player One Podcast and I like it a lot.
Listen UP
Rebel FM, although sometimes they drone on about crap I don't care about.
Nintendo Voice Chat, but only because its short and is focused on recent reviews and news.

EDIT: Forgot about Retronauts.
And SModCast.
And Radio Trivia.

Well, since I no longer work a security job and my new car doesn't have a tape-deck (for my iPod to tape converter) I have decreased my podcast feeds since I don't have as much time to listen.
But from what I remember I listened to these (bold means I still consistently listen to them):
RFN
IGN Nintendo Voice Chat
IGN Game Scoop
IGN Command Prompt
IGN RetroCity
DS: Life
Wii Spot
The Wiire
1 UP Your's
Nintendo Podcast
Nintendorks
Nintencast
1 Up FM
1 Up Retronauts
Gameweasel
Twisted Joystick
Poison Mushroom

There were some others as well but they are not listed on iTunes anymore.
I just subscribed to the Rebel FM to check it out.
I'm also trying out Wiire again but like a said, I don't have as much down time for podcasts anymore.
I think I listened to Evil Avatar a couple of times.
I tended to add more and more 'B', 'C' and lower podcasts when there were delays on my favorites.
Filling nearly 40 hours of graveshifts with podcasts can be a daunting task if you want them to be quality as well.

I would rate RFN as an 'A' class podcast for both content and technical/editing quality   ;D

kraken613February 13, 2009

RFN
All IGN Game Podcast
Cnet's Buzz Out Loud

StratosFebruary 13, 2009

*cough*RadioTriviaPodcastEdition*cough*

I've been meaning to check that one out for a while as well.
I'll D/L it now just to make you happy :)

Oh boy, the podcasts I subscribe to...

RFN
Radio Trivia
Downloadable Content (rarely updated)
Giant Bombcast
IGN Nintendo Voice Chat
Rebel FM
X-Play Daily Video Podcast
Listen UP
Retronauts
Broken Pixels

Of course, I also had 1up FM, 1up Review Crew, and The 1up Show before those were recently killed off.  So far I've only heard one episode of Nintendorks Radio, and it was pretty bad.  The two guys literally just talked about Xbox 360 for the entire show.  And it was boring.  And not funny at all.  I'll give it one more chance before deletion.  I've listened to Player One Podcast a few times, but it doesn't do much for me.

Now those are just my gaming podcasts... I also have these subscriptions:

Endless Boundaries Jam Radio
Filmspotting
Musical Ramblings
NASAcast
NPR All Songs Considered
NPR Live Concerts
Real Time with Bill Maher
The Ricky Gervais Podcast
The Soup Video Podcast
SpoutBlog's Film Couch
Umphrey's McGee Podcast
Washington Week Video Podcast

Yes, I have a problem.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorFebruary 14, 2009

I've cut down on my podcasts a lot recently. Right now I'm only subscribed to:

-Downloadable Content (which hardly ever updates anyway)
-iFanboy Pick of the Week Podcast
-RFN
-SModcast
-Tawk-112 (my new show!)
-Tom vs. The Flash (an AMAZING podcast dedicated to Silver Age issues of, you guessed it, The Flash)
-Retronauts

As for video shows, which I'm not technically subscribed to, but still watch on a regular basis, there's:

-Diggnation
-Totally Rad Show
-iFanboy Video Podcast

Surprised that more people aren't subscribed to Player One Podcast.  It's really well done.
