We're still rocking in the free world here at Radio Free Nintendo, and we're glad to have you with us for a brand new year of angsty video game ramblings. Jonny returns from America's nether-regions with glad tidings, and the whole gang jumps right back into the regular format with New Business, DLC Mondays, and Listener Mail. Topics include Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Prince of Persia, Maboshi's Arcade, and a whole lot of navel-gazing in response to your astute emails.

Even though this episode has the usual structure, at least one big change is on the way, so listen for the details and then proceed to the Talkback thread for this article to share your ideas for this upcoming feature.

1st:

Anyway good show guys. That new piece you talked seems interesting. I think it might just be easier to play a Virtual Console or Wiiware game that people might skip over. Lots of people including myself don't have any other consoles outside of Wii and DS.

I liked the mailbag too. I might second guess a reviewer but I won't think bad if a website or magazine under or overrates a game. I thought Double Dash was lacking so 7.9 was justified. I remember Game Informer got into heat because they ripped to shreds Mario Thousand Year Door. My friend lent it to me, and it was a great game until the end where it dragged its feet and become tedious to play, also limiting inventory really got on my nerves.
Other times I disagree with reviewers. Some people hated Resident evil: Umbrella Chronicles and i played it and LOVED IT, just like johnny.

Speaking of Resident evil, I really think you guys should talk about the new movie Regeneration. It's actually very good and connects with the games.

Thanks to Saturn for the most condescending and elitist letter regarding Wii Music yet!

Pretty decent episode I'd give it a B.

One big flaw about RE:UC  it's Resident Evil 0,1,2-3 (they both happen at the same time after all),CV and they threw in some new areas as well(not referring to the side missions).

Well the wind kept me up last night, so I wound up listening. All the 1-up references riddled in this podcast take on a new aura after the big announcement. You guys can't see into the future, can you?

EDIT: The new feature idea sounds like a book club, only with games. Maybe call it "Game Club"? Although that sounds a little lame, I guess..... Something on VC might be best. I wouldn't go for anything that isn't playable on a DS or Wii. (Wii, GC, DS, GBA, VC)

I like the idea of discussing older games, but can't decide whether nostalgic or familiar is a better approach. Having a title none of the hosts have played would generate fresh discussion, but as the OoT special demonstrated, a classic can hit a lot of resounding chords. Maybe this feature should alternate between semi-obscure and classic.

I got a better name. "Will Club Nintendo a New DS "

anyways I watched that video off the Nintendo channel.

yeah it's bad. real bad. somebody wrote that script at 4 am. It just feels OFF. They kept making fun of the woman birthday. She doesn't even look old, but they kept going after her.

Right when she tastes the chili for the first time for a second you see disgust in her face. Like she didn't like it, but than realized she was getting paid and pretended it was good.

Who the hell cooks chili for a womans birthday anyway ???

I really shouldn't edit my post a bajillion times. Sorry about that, Vega.

I'm not impressed.  Dude is totally stealing my thunder.

I think we're open to pretty much anything, but the specific game candidates should come from the listeners, and I haven't seen any actual suggestions yet!

I'm going to suggest Super Mario Sunshine, because I've been looking for an excuse to give that game another shot. I never did much with it, but its predecessor, Super Mario 64, is my 4th favorite game of all time, and its successor, Super Mario Galaxy, is 3rd. I think it sometimes gets forgotten because of how great the Mario series is as a whole and I want to play through it more thoroughly to see what it brings to the table.

AVJanuary 09, 2009

Ok replay Resident Evil: Gamecube the remake.

ShyGuyJanuary 09, 2009

Props to Jonny for giving Umbrella Chronicles the positive coverage it deserves. I enjoyed the weapon upgrading and unlockables.

broodwarsJanuary 09, 2009

Considering you're an RPG fan, Johnny, I'd suggest Baten Kaitos Origins (or BK, the original, but Origins was better).  Yeah, it's a lengthy game, but it's a game you've never played and considering all the discussion over Monolith with Disaster, you really should.  At least you'll get a chance to see what Monolith can actually do when they're working in a genre they're good at.  It's also a game that's pretty easy to find in just about any Gamestop I've seen.

I think Jonny is looking for games people actually care or know about. Though if that is what he's going for, I suggest they talk about Dark Rift for N64.

PlugabugzJanuary 09, 2009

I played the whole way through RE: UC and thought.... IS THAT IT?

I got so engrossed into it that i completely forgot that lightgun games were meant to be short. We completed it in 2 days.

The thing is, the usual concept of the "Backlog"-kind of segment is to go back and experience games you missed the first time through that you meant to check out when they came out but just didn't.  That seems to fit Kaitos pretty well, especially since Johnny has commented in the past that he hadn't played the games but was always kind of curious about them.

That said, I can't think of many games that haven't been covered pretty extensively by this crew in the past.  I suppose there's always Zelda: Majora's Mask, which would make a good partner episode for the Ocarina one.

Other notables:

-Perfect Dark
-Goldeneye 007
-Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (lot of Metal Gear fans on this podcast)
-Resident Evil REmake and/or Zero
-Pikmin 1 (though that'd be a good one to do when the Wii Port shows up later)
-Metroid Prime 1 (ditto)
-Skies of Arcadia Legends (PLEASE!)
-Zelda: Wind Waker
-Timesplitters: Future Imperfect (or whatever Timesplitters 3 on the GameCube was called)

Sorry giving you a hard time :P. I personally want to see a show on SMB3 or Link to the Past!

I don't want them to do a show on SMB3, someone will say something negative about the game and then I'll have to burn down their house and I don't want to go to prison.

Ok then how about a full show on the impact of the Cruis'n series on the gaming world?

Likewise, a whole show on the impact of Rare collect-a-thons on the gaming world.  Wait, actually that would be pretty entertaining.

I don't remember if the guys have talked about or played the game, but I'd love to see some Drill Dozer love.

SMB3 or SMW would also be a solid nostalgia pick, though yes, I don't know if I could handle all that much negativity toward either title. Baten Kaitos Origins is an interesting pic, although I kind of feel like they should play the first one first so they can compare the battle systems.

History of Camelot

Step 1 : Sega

Sonic! (Part of Climax) - Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force I, II and III (especially Shining Force games are probably the best RPG games on the MD)

Step 2 : Sony
Join in Sony and make Beyond the Beyond as well as Hot Shots Golf 1 (which laid the ground for any HSG title as well as )

Step 3 : Nintendo

Arguably their best time with Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, the handheldparts of those games (with RPG elements.. still consider Mario Golf Advance to be a very fine RPG game..) as well as Golden Sun.

Step 4 : Capcom ? Independent ? Back at Nintendo ?

We Love Golf.. A Hotshotsgolf or Mario Tennis game... It should be noted that their next game comming out is Mario Tennis Remake on the Wii

Anyway just wanted to post this because Camelot in fact has made a great bunch of RPG titles

D_AverageJanuary 09, 2009

I still hold the Mario Tennis review against you guys.

(full disclosure - I did not know this site existed when that review dropped, but after reading every archived review I was very disappointed when I saw that score)

GregLover5000January 09, 2009

I haven't read your Mario Tennis: Power Tour review, but I picked it up cheap a couple of years ago and, damn, I'd give Power Tour an 11. (Well, maybe a 9.) That's one little cartridge that far exceeded all my expectations.

I hated Power Tour because you couldn't turn off power shots in the story mode. The Game Boy Color Mario Tennis remains to this day as one of my all time favorite games.

Finally finished the podcast. I assume it is ok for me to recommend games eventhough I am a staff member since I'm a listener.

One question: If its on Virtual Console, is it fair game?

Viewtiful Joe (GC)
Comix Zone (VC)
Kid Chameleon (VC)
Shining Force II (VC)
Dynamite Headdy (VC)
Super Mario RPG (VC)
Donkey Kong 64 (N64)
Timesplitters 2 or 3 (GC)
Sega Soccer Slam (GC)

That's all I can come up with right now.
Of course half that list goes away if Genesis VC games aren't allowed...

My iPod the other day suggested Super Monkey Ball (GC).

Player One Podcast already does a segment like this called "Game Club" so I would suggest not calling it that.

Wiiview?
Wiiwind?
Radio Free Backlog?
RFWhen?

Okay, I'm done with the cheesy names.  Here's some game suggestions:

1.  Shining Force II - Genesis.  (VC - 800 points) One of the better 16 bit RPGs (even if Jonny says it's a strategy game) not made by Squeenix on a system that didn't exactly excel in the genre.

2.  Super Mario Sunshine - Gamecube (Wii BC) I still don't understand why this game is such a black sheep, because I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3.  Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening - Gameboy Color (GBA SP BC)  This game is begging for a re-release now that the DS has pretty much fully replaced the GBA.  One of my all time favorite 2D Zelda games, probably better than both of the Oracle games and Minish Cap.

4.  Metroid II: Return of Samus - Gameboy (GBA SP BC)  This game is begging for a reMAKE because every time I try to play it, I find it very difficult to get past the datedness of the game.  It's the only Metroid game I haven't finished.

5.  Pikmin - Gamecube (Wii BC) Let's all get ready for the new Pikmin game by playing the old Pikmin game.

There are some great suggestions here, so thanks everyone!  And please keep them coming.  In order to expedite this process, I think we're going to just choose the first game (out of your suggestions) and then start a poll here in the forums for the next game.  Relying on a poll for the first game would have pushed the feature back even more, and we want to get started with it sooner than later.  We'll probably set up the poll for game #2 within a couple of days, as soon as we announce which game we'll be playing, so please look out for that and get in your game suggestions soon in order to make the poll deadline.  (If you're late, that's okay too -- there will be more polls!)

My vote is for Wave Race 64 for the next topic    8)

MaleficentOgreJanuary 13, 2009

I don't often read reviews anymore because I feel like there's only a few type of people that review games and they all come from a similar perspective. They're looking for things that I am not necessarily looking for.
As for site reviews no one knows who writes reviews. I sure don't. I just know the review came from a certain site. That's the way most people dig reviews. I don't care what kind of games you guys play and the onus shouldn't be on me to know. I should read the review and get all the info out of it I need. If I wrote reviews I'd come at them from a different angle and it'd be up to me to make sure the reader knew where I was coming from. Wii music has been fun for me every time I've played it, but I've been in the absolute perfect environments for it. It ranks pretty high in my book for what it is.
I do wish 1up as a whole allowed slightly longer reviews, or wrote them better. I love two paragraph reviews, but if they're not informative they're useless. EGM's reviews for anything other than their AAA games were useless and stupid. Sure you had three numbers but what did they mean? I remember reading one review that was two sentences long.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusJanuary 13, 2009

How about "obsure wii and DS games" that got lost in shuffle or didn't get a lot of exposure. I'd love to see Crimm talk about Baroque and Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer.

TheFleeceJanuary 14, 2009

I've recently decided to go back and replay all the Metroid games in chronological story order. I beat Zero Mission and have the NES Metroid waiting for me on the V. I'd be down to replay Metroid Prime or Metroid II since I got it and a GBA (also DrewMG for a very long time that was the only Metroid game I've ever beaten and yeah I think RFWhen is alright)
II would be down to play anything that came out for the GameCube or N64 because I never had one. The only game I have to suggest is Viewtiful Joe because it's not on VC and I love the hell out of platformers.
