UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Let's get this show on the road!

The farewell/Year-in-Review episode with Karl and Obi is still coming, eventually (like Karl's reviews), but we decided to get rolling with the new gang and a new format. In fact, this show is so fresh, we're calling it the start of Season Two! Jonny takes over hosting duties and welcomes to the show:

Greg Leahy, England's Ex-Favorite Son

Jon Lindemann, Canada's Favorite Ex-Pat

James Jones, NWR's Favorite Ex-Community Manager

We gab at length about our holiday gaming sprees, then jump into a huge, luscious pile of listener mail. James even gives us the pulse of the forums, and our medical opinion is that they may need to cut down on the meds. There's so much community stuff that we put it in a separate segment, so the show wraps up with a look at the past week's most interesting and/or hilarious and/or rage-inducing news stories.

We're still playing with the lineup and the show format, so please tell us what you think!

This is my first pass at editing something like a podcast so if anybody has any comments please PM me them or post them here. I want to find ways to make this as good as I can. And yes, I can't do the "enhanced" podcasts because Apple never followed through on their promise to make the Chapter Tool for other platforms.

Oh man, This is like late at night when you're hungry for a snack and you find a candy bar in your kitchen cupboard!

ShyGuyJanuary 16, 2008

Dang if I'm not liking this so far.

Good stuff guys. Definitely miss Karl and Mike, but the new line up did great. On that note, perhaps your weekly podcasts will be a little more timely, unlike the last batch of slackers face-icon-small-tongue.gif.

who needs um... really, I think they quit just so they would be loved and missed by more than their mother's sister in law. Come on like they are actually going to miss the podcast. They quit so they didn't have to do the podcast.

Bunch' o' slackers

Well right now we aren't sure what days we are going to record. Right now it takes me about a solid day to edit a podcast. I expect that to go down, but if my free time goes down also it may take two or so.

tl;dr: dunno when the next podcast will roll out

I swore the FMV compression technology that Factor 5 developed was specifically for the N64, not the Gamecube. This was about the time when Resident Evil 4 was released on the N64 with *all* the CG cinemas, which wouldn't have been possible without that compression technology. If you ask me, it would've been nice if the same technology was developed for the Gamecube, because too many games on that system had blurry and artifacting CG cinemas due to the compression needed to fit it on a 1.5 gig disc (i.e. Eternal Darkness, Fire Emblem IX, etc.).

No, they developed the MusyX:N64. It allowed music to be "interactive" with what is going on in the game, rather than be simple playback. It was later modified to allow real-time surround sound encoding. Nintendo licensed it to make it standard in the GC SDK. A derivation was also created for the GBA.

Their DivX for Games SDK was created for the GameCube to cope with the small disk size of the GC.

Edit: dear God, I'm a nerd.

There seem to be some somewhat awkward transitions from topic-to-topic. They tend go be abrupt and a little jarring even because they happen so suddenly. I'm not sure if it's Crimm's editing or Jonny's hosting. The content is spot-on, but don't be in such a rush to leave a second or two or dead space between topics so listeners know you're shifting gears.

I didn't do any cuts between topics, only when you hear music play.

We were running long from the start and there may have been some "okay we got to get going to the next thing." We also had our fair share of technical problems (2 disconnects) so recording took a while.

So are you saying we need more "padding" between stories or more of a smooth transition?

vuduJanuary 18, 2008

A little of both, actually. The transitions between the community section and the second break (before the news) and the news sections between the Brawl delay and GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade both seemed to be rushed. (Literally within three seconds one section ended, the transition happened and then the new section began.) I just didn't know if that's how Jonny actually transitioned or if some dead spots were edited out to keep the show moving.

I know it's totally nit-picking, but you said to posts comments about the editing.

Overall, it was a great show. I really like Lindemann. Greg and Crimm are good too, but you guys need to speak up more. Sometimes it seems like you guys have a habit of letting Jonny (and in this case Lindemann, too) run the show. Granted, we don't want you guys talking over one another, so it's a fine line to cross. Greg's better this time around than he was in the previous episode--last time there were a few times where he didn't say anything for six or seven minutes and I completely forgot he was even on the podcast.)

Someone wants me to talk more?! Unprecedented!

ShyGuyJanuary 18, 2008

Jonny is like Garnett and if you let him, he dominates the podcast. face-icon-small-wink.gif Lindermann is a good counterpoint, but I think someone like Evan would make a good foil.

We'll try to have Evan on more often. I told these guys that they had to be big personalities because I will totally run over them if allowed. I need big mouths to give me some competition.

I'm yelling next time. I'm going to grief a podcast.

One of the transition songs is kinda short. Like, 8 seconds. I have a bunch of songs here but I just duplicated the layout of another podcast.

Regarding Team Fortress 2, I'd describe it as one of the more friendly FPS. The servers I've played on so far have been fairly positive. Less chatter, more action. And when there is chatter, its decent, I've only encountered one or two bad sports throughout my playing time.

Jonny (and for anyone else), if you're looking for a good server to play on give these guys a whirl.. They have TF2 Tuesdays, and Friday night fights as their main attractions, though you can log on anytime they have space. Check the blog for more details.

I'm MongooseX36 on Steam, so if you need a medic, add me

As far as games during Sega Saturn era, one could say that Nights and the Panzer Dragoon series were the system's highlights. However, to get the full enjoyment, you had to import.

Which brings me to my next point: I'd like it if there was someone to balance some of these one sided observations. With Karl gone, who's left to vouch for Suda51?

I take it that "____ crazy mailbag" has gone by the wayside then? I liked some of those off beat questions...

Overall, not a bad start. I like the 4 man panel, and can't wait for RFN to return in regular rotation...

Yes sir, this means you. We need some insight from people on the other side of the world.

I'll defend Goichi Suda as my personal savior.

Thanks for clearing that up Crimm.

By the time this podcast got rolling I had zero energy. I had worked a really long day, came home and had dinner, then went right to the PC to record this. Then I had to install a bunch of stuff to get up to speed. It was a royal pain.

It's easy for Jonny to dominate a podcast because, simply put, the dude likes to talk. He EXPOUNDS. hahaha

Also the fact that we'd never done a podcast together meant that the chemistry was a little off. Like any team, it needs time to gel.
