We here at Radio Free Nintendo would like to present Jonathan Metts debut as host in this all senior-staff good-bye edition of our show. They also take a moment to dish on the new site and its name. Want to know what it is? Take a listen!

You can also listen to the podcast on , or subscribe to us on iTunes.

Unlike most podcast blurbs, I'm not going to waste a lot of your time with words like a certain Oregonian does. Frequently.

What I will tell you is what you need to know. Included in this very special RFN is:

  • Jonny recounts his adventures through time and space before he landed on Planet GameCube.
  • Windy discusses the fall of Nintendo Nation and his life as a refugee.
  • Bloodworth celebrates his rags to riches tale from random poster to Senior Editor.
  • TYP excites us with his sordid shenanigans when he snuck in to E3 underage
  • You'll finally learn the name of the new site.

Enjoy!

Hey! No fair!

what?

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusNovember 14, 2006

Way to be classy, Vudu.

vuduNovember 14, 2006

Com'on ... we've been waiting for this for like six months. People simply couldn't wait another 22 minutes!

(Seriously though; I hope you guys aren't mad.)

Tigris AltaicaNovember 14, 2006

Can't wait to find out... But I'll listen to it on my subway ride to college tomorrow.

ArtimusNovember 14, 2006

When will it go live?

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusNovember 14, 2006

Nice podcast guys! So the third incarnation of PGC is at hand, good stuff, I can't wait. NWR FTW!

TOMORROW NIGHT our lives will change TOMORROW NIGHT

CalibanNovember 14, 2006

I'm excited to see the new site. Good podcast btw.

BigJimNovember 14, 2006

Nice podcast, nice name. Looking forward to seeing the new site.

Shift KeyNovember 14, 2006

The lack of PLANET in the name is disappointing. But its good to see that PGC lives on in a new form anyway.

SheckyNovember 14, 2006

The new name does help capture that you cover all Nintendo territories, and your game database backs up the claim nicely

WindyManSteven Rodriguez, Staff AlumnusNovember 14, 2006

Fun fact about the impending transition: The staff decided to get rid of their old bodies and exchange them for smokin' hot new ones. We will look as sexy as the new site!

BiLdItUp1November 14, 2006

Wow...authoritative, to say this least; like the Reuters of the Nintendo sphere (on the name, obviously)

My reaction:

Worst name change since the Wii.

Take that for what you will.

You guys promised a couple of hours...

BigJimNovember 14, 2006

Will the new site adopt Nintendo's goal of "mainstream" appeal or will it mostly maintain the current level of editorial guidelines? If that makes any sense...

What I mean is, for example, there is lingo in our everyday language that would be foreign to new players... Not that PGC is severely daunting in the geekery department, but I'm just curious if there are any specific guideline changes we can expect with the intent of welcoming in new mainstream players.

If you want to follow a link, instead of pushing a button, you'll point to the link and then shake the mouse.

The TravellerNovember 14, 2006

I like it, sounds good. Cant wait to see the new design.

ThePermNovember 14, 2006

Ah wow, that podcast took me back quite a bit. It seems that the site editors and I went through some of the very same experiences. I remember reading IGN very heavily skewing for news on Nintendo's next system. I remember reading some article about the n64.com reunion at(I think) Nintendo Next. I followed IGN's affiliate page and found several of my favorite pages from back then (opn2000, planetn2000, dolphincove, nintendorks, nintendojo, tendobox, etc). I remember being an early fan of planetn2000 and opn2000. I read the news pretty daily and liked the format. I applied to be the gfx designer way back when, but when my mom saw me giving Billy my personal info she freaked out. I started my own website called NextGenWar, but we really had trouble getting it off the ground. I suppose it was a little too late, because all the great talent went to the other sites.

Anyways, I'v been on these forums so long, currently I don't have the highest post copunt, but i bet if you combined my post counts from all previous forum incarnations I would!!!

IceColdNovember 14, 2006

I ... don't like it.

GoldenPhoenixNovember 14, 2006

Good name guys, it is very professional sounding and like was stated previously it gives off a more "global" feel.

DarkheartNovember 14, 2006

Actually edit:: I LOVE the new name and its a name that you guys can keep on to forever. That is actually what I wanted for you guys for a long time. If you keep on changing your name its going to be hard for you guys to get remembered by people. I just am hoping for a Wii/Dslite ish makeover to the page . . .

WPack911November 14, 2006

It is a very professional name and I like that. I think that the people that work for this site are some off the hardest working true professionals in gaming journalism and now they have a name to match that professional attitude.

I found this site in much the same way the staff said they did and I have loved it ever since. I worked for another site that is now no longer around, and the entire time I worked there all I ever wanted to do was try to be as good as the people that work for this site and I think I did for the most part.

This site is the best gaming site on the net, it breaks big news first a lot, but the real sign of being the best is the fact that it reports every bit of news from Zelda to telling everybody that the new Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen game just shipped. Even if nobody says "wow I am so gonna go get that game" at least we know that you guys are so hard working and professional you are gonna report that anyway just to make sure you have all the Nintendo news out there.

You could change your name to "Wii Wii's Playhouse" and I would still come back, cause this site (to steal a Bret Hart line) is "The Best there is, the Best there was, and the best there ever will be" period.

-Andrew

Spak-SpangNovember 15, 2006

It is not a bad name. It works very well. However, I think it sounds too NEWSY.

Obviously, they don't want us to say the name in the blog...so I will give you the initials.

NWR

And just for a bonus, N stands for Nintendo.

Personally, although it sounds professional it has no whimsical fun nature to it at all.

We're planning to make the site more newsy (not at the expense of other coverage). Also, the name might seem a bit dry, but you'll get used to it. It's no worse than Planet GameCube or Imagine Games Network. And you can always call us NWR.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 15, 2006

But can we call you late for dinner?

TMWNovember 15, 2006

You're gonna be like the NPR of the game journalism world.

It's gonna be sweet.

UltimatePartyBearNovember 15, 2006

I don't like listening to podcasts, and I find editing comments to prevent people from letting the cat out of the bag the very opposite of classy.

mantidorNovember 15, 2006

Now I have to wait until I get home to know the new name face-icon-small-frown.gif

Spak-SpangNovember 15, 2006

You can find the name in the FUNHOUSE!!!

Note that we made no further attempts (as far as I'm aware) to stiffle posts, as the concept of doing so was indeed silly.

ShyGuyNovember 15, 2006

NWR: "We only oppressed that community member like, once." face-icon-small-wink.gif

Dun Dun Dun NWR Headline news. Here with today's report, Karl Castaneda.
"Good Evening, I'm Karl Castaneda. In today's news, An investigatory panel is continuing its probe into which moderator censored the poster known as Vudu. More on that story coming up. First, we turn to today's Nintendo sports news with our sportscaster, Stan Ferguson. Stan?"
"Arrrr Mancakes! Back to you Karl."

vuduNovember 15, 2006

Classic. ShyGuy gets a frookie.

I understand why TYP would feel the need to edit my post. It was just a one word post with the new name and a link to the future site.

It's obvious PGC is excited about the new site and honestly, I can't blame them. I'm really looking forward to it.

If I pissed off anyone, I would like to apologize. It was not my intent to steal your thunder.

Also (out of pure curiosity) if I ever did get banned would I still be able to visit the site and read the forums (and just not login and contribute) or would I be completely blacklisted and not able to even view the site/forums? Because that would suck.

New World Revolution! Join the cause! Fight The MAN! Free Ak47s for every succesful referral and sign up!

No? ok then.

Man, I feel 5 years older having listened to that podcast.

The new site better not be all just white and blue. I know you guys are far more creative than that.

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusNovember 15, 2006

It wasn't TYP that edited it, Vudu. It was me. However, my internet is down at home, so I haven't been able to respond until now. TYP and I were trying hard to figure out what to do to keep it from getting out too early, because we'd like to sort of reward the listeners.

Anyway, by now it's out and about. We will be Nintendo World Report.

And no, Vudu, we weren't thinking about banning you at all. We just got frustrated for a sec, then, as TYP said, we realized that no two men alone can stop the internet.

KnowsNothingNovember 15, 2006

Sounds very professional, mayhaps the pgc crew got frustrated with being the "amature fansite" and now want to be taken more seriously. I don't mind the name change that much, but it's gonna be really strange not going to PGC anymore...

:tear:

Also the acronym NWR is nowhere near as cool as PGC >=U

segagamer12November 15, 2006

I actually kinda like the new name. When I tell people about Planet Game Cube around here they laugh cuz they name is silly to them cuz noone likes GC around here, everyone ehre is still convinced PS3 will come out on Top and Wii will fail worse than GC.

But the new name does sound pretty cool.

Getting back to the theme of the podcast, I dont rememeber when or how I fisrt stumbled on PGC, all I know is I started out reading the mailbag and news sections for along time and it wasnt till gamefaqs kicked me off that I joined the forums here.

All I do remember was I was drawn to Ian Sane's comments and wanted to defend him cuz I agreed with him a lot of the time. I know that I had a hard time getting on too, it took like months before they got my password and username to work.

Anyways I still love the site and I can't wait to see the new one you guys rock and stay cool.

DjunknownNovember 15, 2006

The name's definitely different. Hell, it sounds more serious and professional than most other gaming sites out there. But there's always the fun house...

To think Bloodworth had such humble beginnings, I would never have guessed.

To NWR, wine.gif beer.gif and I pour a 40oz for PGC.

mantidorNovember 15, 2006

I love the name, and it fits, the community is very international compared to other sites, and the news reflect that, this is probably the only site which I've seen reporting on price of the wii on Brazil or launch info of Australia. I can't wait for the new site.

We would never block someone from viewing the site, and I think you can still read the forums even if you get banned.

The name isn't FUN.

PGC had a natural rhythm to it with each syllable rhyming, NWR doesn't and sounds more like NWO. Sounds like a wrestling game...

And it's a Nintendo site, face it, it won't ever be prestigious in the eyes of people who don't like Nintendo. Besides, prestige is won not by your site name, but your reporting and relevance.

I get the whole "world" angle, but I just can't grow to like this name. It sounds sterile, too long, and sorta soulless and like no real stand was being made with the name. It sounds like a surrender, not a declaration.

Karl Castaneda #2November 16, 2006

Kairon, I understand where you're coming from. PGC's been very similar throughout the years, both in name and in design philosophy. Now we've got a new name and a new face and you're thinking, "Woah woah woah, this isn't the girl I married." I get that, and again, I understand. But trust me when I say that there was a lot of thought put into this, and that we're all confident it's going to be for the best.

Much like the Wii name, perhaps it just needs time to marinate.

IceColdNovember 16, 2006
