Saddam can't get a Playstation.

Burchfield and I have been swapping hosting duties lately, and while it's been a lot

of fun, this week heralded the return of the true heir to the RFN Throne. Mike

Sklens came back in a bright explosion of glory. This was a bit too much for Evan

who, after residing in the dank, dark, underworld of Oregon, could not

comprehend such things. As such, he sat this one out.

You can also listen to the podcast on .

Tonight the three of us go to town on the state of advertising, public awareness,

viral tactics, and the whole shebang as far as Nintendo (and the game industry as a

whole) is concerned. Stan and Mike both sing the Big N's praises, but I've got more

than a few issues with their current performance.

This podcast also marks the first time Radio Free Nintendo has had a special

industry guest star. Ken Chan, Brand Consultant for Acclaim (the new one), was

kind enough to stop by and talk shop for the final segment. Oddly enough, he

gives Nintendo an "A" in the marketing arena, as well, which throws me into a fit. I

look forward to your hate mail! Direct it to the following, please.

Oh, and one more thing. Remember that wacky Naruto contest? We've

got the winners picked, and they'll be played... TONIGHT! Also, a big thanks goes out to everyone who entered. Keep those creative juices flowing because our next big winner just might be you!

The first entry was great. The dude must've taken a while to write that rhyme down. The second one was pretty good. The third one was indeed pretty crazy. Mickey and Gollum...hehe :p .

Congratulations!

DarkheartOctober 30, 2006

The Clubhouse games commercial has been out for a week now . . . . it has a lady in a car waiting for her kids to come out of school and she whips out a DS and plays Clubhouse game. "DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR WAITING TIME"

VanceOctober 30, 2006

Congratulations to the winners! The rap and second entry get the official Gai sensei thumbs-up.

Edit: Just heard the third entry. That one gets a big Gai sensei thumbs-up also. face-icon-small-thumbsup.gif

CericOctober 30, 2006

I like reading the press releases. Especially since they are direct.

FFVII yeah...

Smash_BrotherOctober 30, 2006

I'm SO glad to hear someone else make the "bad games are still good for a console" argument...

And yeah, that first entry was excellent. Second entry was good too but the first was just awesome.

ShyGuyOctober 30, 2006

It's strange, Heroin = Funny. Black Tar Heroin = Hilarious

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusOctober 30, 2006

I take issue with a couple lyrics in the first one:

"Evan and Karl / They've got me glued"

What? Those two yahoos? What about Mike and Stan? Or semi-regular Jonny?

Jerk!

Smoke39October 30, 2006

That Nerf sniper rifle does look pretty cool. I could be, like, Kerrigan for Halloween.

SvevanEvan Burchfield, Staff AlumnusOctober 30, 2006

Hmmm, what about Mike and Stan? Particularly Stan? What about him indeed.....

EXPOSED

Not only is Stan seen here wearing A BUCKET HAT but he is also very clearly identified as none other than REGINALD FILS-AIME HIMSELF. I'm glad that our contest entrants are WISE ENOUGH not to compliment you on INFILTRATING AN INDEPENDENT WEBSITE and soiling it with your MARIO TENNIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED fanboy opinions!

How's that?

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusOctober 30, 2006

The best part is I'm watermarked with the PGC logo. THIS IS A PLANET GAMECUBE EXCLUSIVE!

wanderingOctober 31, 2006

I never win these things ever. Even - no, especially - when winning is "guaranteed." Congrats to the winners. They were all good.

The podcast was good too. I didn't even skip ahead to see who beat me.

Edit: If anyone's interested, here's what I submitted:

audio recording:

Hello, my name is John Senobi, and I am a fellow Nintendo fan, and a follower of the path of Shinobi - that's right, I am a Ninja. I'd just like to let you guys know how much I enjoy the show you put on. Every episode...apart from the pirate ones. Not a big fan of pirates. Anyway, I put it on my ipod, and listen to it as I'm leaping from rooftop to rooftop, chopping off people's heads, and all good Ninja stuff. It's great. That's my advertisement. I'm giving it to you because I'm on a mission. A mission to aquire every Naruto episode, video game, and piece of merchandise....and then destroy them. Naruto spreads a lot of misconceptions about the noble art of the ninjitsu, and so I will aquire the items in your possession. I'd prefer to do it the easy way, that's why I'm entering this contest.

Mike: So, anyway...

*phone rings*

Karl: Hang on, that's my phone. (Puts caller on speakerphone.) Hello?

Evan (sounding like he's on a cell phone): Karl Kastunyeddaleragata? Thank god. This is Evan.

Karl (annoyed that Evan is interrupting the recording of the podcast): Hey, we're kind of in the middle....

Evan's vocal impersonator: Who's calling now?

Karl: You.

Evan's vocal impersonator: Oh.

Evan: Listen - I'm standing on the street outside my house. Seaman is out of control. Him and his minions - they lust after human flesh. I fed them Mrs. Rumbottom, but they still aren't satisfied. I tried showing them a movie to calm them down, but they said my taste in movies sucked. Then kicked me out of my house! (Getting emotional) Listen, I-I don't know what to....

Stan: Calm down, Evan. Are they still in your house?

Evan: I'm sorry?

Karl: Where are the evil videogames now?

Evan: In the hou....oh, no, wait, they're coming out. Oh god, they found my chainsaw collection.

Mike: You have a chainsaw collection?

*The game boxes march towards Evan, revving-up their chainsaws*

Woman in background: AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

Man in background: It's the end of the worl- (then, as the chainsaws rip into his flesh) Arrgh.... *gurgle*

Games (as they chow down on the man's innards): *snarl*, *growl*

Evan: It's pandemonium over here. Thank god I have this shotgun.

*shotgun blast*

Karl: Just try and wrangle them up and we'll send them out to the winner of the contest.

Evan: The contest, right. Look, I really don't think we're promoting that thing enough. Can you, like, write up something for the main page on how awesome Naruto is? You can talk about...um...how cool that guy with the bushy eyebrows is, and stuff.

Karl: Rock Lee?

Evan: Yeah.

Mike: The contest is already over. We've picked the winners.

Evan: Did you say the contest is over? I guess - excuse me

*shotgun blast*

Evan: I guess my vocal impersonator helped with the judging.

Evan's vocal impersonator: I do what I can.

Evan: Right, okay, well, I'll try to take care of things here.

Seaman (as he tries to leap onto Evan's face): *Rawr*!

Evan: Aaaah!

*two shotgun blasts*

Evan: That was close. Bye, guys.

*Evan hangs up*

Stan (who had given some of Evan's games a special potion to turn them into evil killing machines - a potion he had spent a year scouring the seven seas for - in hopes of the games killing Evan so that Radio Free Nintendo could permanently become Nintendo Pirate Radio): Well. It sounds like everything is going to plan. *Evil laugh*

Everyone else (joining in): *Evil laugh*

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusOctober 31, 2006

I want to hear this. Evan or Karl. Send it to me.

I would just like to say that I missed the soothing vocal stylings of Mike Sklens.

CericOctober 31, 2006

I hear that the development tools for the 360 are much much better.

I believe they are, since MS is still trying to reinforce the X360 can go cross-platform easily with PC angle. After all, the XNA independent dev program makes you program in C# and can port to either X360 or PC.

What makes it tough though, is probably optimizing something for the 360, since it no longer uses off-the-shelf parts and has 3 cores to thread through.

vuduOctober 31, 2006

So did KnowsNothing win? Congrats. Also, I think I heard him say something about Domo-Kun. Yea!

CericOctober 31, 2006

Further Proof the Bucket Hat is taking over.

AcefonduOctober 31, 2006

Great PodCast. I'm actually gunning for my bachelor's degree in marketing. Already have the associates, yay! Anywho, word of mouth advertising seems to work nowhere but gaming. I completely agree with that. And college campuses are definitely the way to go. Me and two other friends introduced the DS to our school lounge and within three weeks 12 other people had a DS. One guy bought 2 because his got stolen. It was hilarious, good times were had, and Mario Kart reigned as homework took a back seat. But, anyway Wii really needs to hit the college campuses. It couldn't be a more perfect atmosphere especially since college students typically can't afford a PS3.

Two things.

One I'm surprised you never mentioned the "Get N or Get out" ads that Nintendo ran during the N64 days which I thought was one of their most coherent campaigns.

And two, I'm shocked no one bashed the PSP campaign. Is that not the WORST video game campaign in history?

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusOctober 31, 2006

Ace, I hate you for bringing up the PSP campaign. I tried to shut out that memory, and here you go bringing it all back. DIE!

AcefonduOctober 31, 2006

Hahaha, my sincere apologies. Well, good work all the same. I hope to hear more of this witty banter.

CericOctober 31, 2006

:music:It's Raining Men. Hallelujah. It's Raining Men...:music: Oh Wait wrong thing.

So the Evil Baby Doll is part of a series.

PS3, Don't know. Developers are grumble.

FAR

There can't be a Playstation 3. They are just Rumors.

Ah... The Mancakes...

Blasphemer. lol

Yes.

Zug Zug... I'm a goon.

I enjoyed the interview.

vuduOctober 31, 2006

This is the greatest podcast in the history of podcasts. Why? Because I'm only halfway through it and Mike and Stan have already told Karl to shut up twice for not knowing what he's talking about. I love it.

CalibanOctober 31, 2006

1 hour, 10 minutes, and 3 seconds for a podcast is very unwanted, at least from me it is, it has always been my main complaint anyway.

KnowsNothingOctober 31, 2006

That first entry was pretty cool, I can even forgive pgc for putting off my inevitable victory by extending the contest if it resulted in that groovy rap.

I'm now two for two when it comes to Naruto related planetgamecube contests face-icon-small-smile.gif I'm really surprised I won, I mean, the competition must have sucked worse than last time...>_>

CericOctober 31, 2006

Hey. My idea was good I just didn't have time ti implement it correctly.

SvevanEvan Burchfield, Staff AlumnusOctober 31, 2006

Sorry for the length. I wanted to cut it into two pieces, but got vetoed. Feel free to listen to it in spurts, as I did. Most of our casts will be shorter than this, we had a lot of ground to cover this week and no possible way to remove anything. Besides, I think it was a great cast that Karl, Mike, and Stan put a GREAT amount of effort into. So congrats to them.

CalibanNovember 01, 2006

Oh I agree that the show was great, the hour passed by quickly, and I listened to it in one go no probs.

You guys have improved alot, maybe it is just my hearing scar from the first few podcasts where there were alot of umm's and uh's, and the myriad of audio inconsistencies that make me be aprehensive about a 1 hour show.

Keep up the good work.

TrueNerdNovember 02, 2006

Thank you for listening to my pleas of longer RFNs. Screw those "short and sweet" people! Anywho, this was one of your stronger efforts. I really liked how you got an industry guy to talk about his practice without peddling a product (for the most part anyways). I also enjoyed how Karl was seemingly pissed the entire time. AngryKarl should be a regular character.

And man, the day I first saw that Super Mario Sunshine ad will go down as my saddest day as a Nintendo fan. I mean, the game is still great, but that commercial raped all my wonderful childhood memories with the mustachioed plumber.

Unlike the PS3 Ad that does the same thing minus the Mustachioed Plumber.

Anyways. I like not having um and like. I always find that they make people sound stupid and are unneeded.

CalibanNovember 02, 2006

After reading "The Future Of PlanetGamecube" I realized something, get Billy Berghammer as a special guest on one of the podcasts.

KnowsNothingNovember 04, 2006

Just got my stuffs ^_____^

The best part out of all of this is getting the PGC T-Shirt and DVD face-icon-small-happy.gif It's also surprising how much better Clash of Ninja is now that it's in a language I can understand face-icon-small-thumbsup.gif

Smash_BrotherNovember 04, 2006

So who gets the extra games, like Seaman?

No, I don't want to hear any jokes about Evan and his Seaman...

SvevanEvan Burchfield, Staff AlumnusNovember 04, 2006

YUO.

Yeah, Smash Bro is the grand prize winner. I'll ship those out soon, you'll be getting your Naruto stuff sooner though.

Smash_BrotherNovember 04, 2006

Yeah, I received the t-shirt and the Naruto stuff at the family home, but I'm at my apartment and too ill with the mother of all sinus infections to even drive over there to check them out.

I'm surprised I won, though. While I don't regret the decision (especially since I have a friend who loves quirky games like Seaman), I have to admit, I thought the others were better than mine.

Knowing how crazy PGC is, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason you won the extra prizes was because you were the first to ask "So, who gets the extra games?".
