Quite a glorious game, but one that loses appeal way too soon.

Dolphin Up is one of those games I never really heard much about. It just decided to cross my path one day so I decided to pick up the glove that was thrown at me. On one hand, I am glad that I did do exactly that - I pretty much laughed my behind off while I played this little adventure. Once the dust is all settled though, Dolphin Up doesn't offer much substance and you will just move on to something else.

The best way I could describe Dolphin Up is a mixture between Ecco the Dolphin and Tony Hawk. You move this cute little Dolphin across a large body of water and move up to do a bunch of tricks. When you land accordingly on your way back down, you will build up momentum and this will allow you to fly even higher in the sky. This becomes quite insane as you reach the depths of space and rank up mental combos.

The problem is that this is only thing the game has to offer. You can do it at three different places with three different creatures in two optional modes, which are timed or endless. The timed mode does allow you to upload scores to the Nintendo Network, so it does offer high score rankings. Once you've had your fill though, there is not much else to do I'm afraid. The tricks are somewhat limited and once you know all of them, there isn't much else to hold you over. I turn it on for the occasional round or to show it to my friend, but that's about it.

There isn't much in the way of music either, so Dolphin Up doesn't do a great job holding your interest. The ambient background sounds are fine, but they are simply repeated in all three stages. Dolphin Up features a simple and colorful look, which looks good on your television. You can clearly see what you are doing and everything just blends well together.

Dolphin Up starts out quite fun, but it doesn't last. The game plays smoothly and it looks quite nice, but there isn't much in the way of variety. After a while, you are done with it and asking yourself if it was worth your time. There are online leaderboards, so it has at least that going for it. While there are way worse fish in the sea, this one might just end up in a frying pan sooner or later.

Summary

  • Quite glorious at first
