Talkback

I'm going to be double posting in this talkback thread, because I have to comment on Dr. Metts' siscussion of Game 2 while it is fresh on my mind.

Adventure Island was one of my cousin's favorite NES games to rent. I found it kinda funny when you spoke of the fact that you weren't using the Dino Buddies because  of them being inferior to the Axe. this to me sounds like trying to argue that Yoshi isn't as good as the fire flower. I know that this is comparing apples to oranges here, but those dinosaur buddies give you a free hit and unlike the skateboard don't force you forward!

I've never actually had the timer kill me in adventure island 2. the game does a good enough job at constantly giving Master Higgins enough fruit to turbo digest that  you can take the game at a bit more of a leisurely pace then what Johnny is describing until maybe some of the later levels.

Moreover, without getting into the weird dichotomy of Wonder Boy and Adventure Island's separate evolutionary paths, I would like to say that the famicom game Adventure Island 4 is a Metroidvania! Master Higgins has to find items he permanently can select from a menu to get around that he doesn't drop when he dies, and the whole world is interconnected in one long level! If that at all sounds like something you want to try, by all means, Johnny! there's also Super Adventure Island 2 for the Super Famicom that honestly feels like Hudson's attempt to make a game that falls a little more in line with it's wonder boy progenitors.

Finally, WTF TYP! you didn't use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FhP2vUza7o my favorite song from adventure island 2?!? color me disappoint!

Make that a triple post when this is all done and over! 3/3 so far, and lemme tell you...

I think Jake Kauffman ended up composing better songs than Higeshime Tonomura. I jam out to the Mount Vesuvius theme and it's 8-bit remix ALL the damned time when I am streaming myself drawing. I'll gladly admit that maaaaaaybe the money bin theme sounds more like it belongs in a Mighty Switch Force game thanks to the electronic instruments that Kauffman uses, but seriously, man. Maybe it's just the fatigue of the moon theme over all these years, and I'm not saying the music in Ducktales is bad either way, but I seriously would put the Mount Vesuvius theme up with some of Kauffman's best works, along with the likes of the 80's-tastic glam rock that is sprinkled through Double Dragon Neon and Burning Town from Shantae.

I guess I kinda am a big Wayforward guy in the same Zach Miller is, but Virt is probably my favorite video game music composer, so admittingly there's some bias, but... MAN. Also, I want that Mout Vesuvius theme to be in a Mega Man 2 Romhack for Heat Man's stage or something. @__@

TYP may have utterly mangled my last name, but it's always a pleasure to have my requests included in an episode!

ClexYoshi,

I completely agree that the new songs in Ducktales Remastered are just amazing!  I also thought Kaufman's covers of the original 8-bit music was spot-on throughout.  People tend to say the Moon theme isn't as good (as Jonny does in this episode) but I just think it's enjoyable in a different way than the original, more propulsive and dancey (as so much of Kaufman's music is).  While I agree that Moneybin probably would make more sense in the Mighty! series, it's just so infectious and joyful it has to be my favorite of the new songs.  It's great music to drive to turned up real loud.

Okay! 5/5! I had to metagame game 5 after thinking about some of the things Johnny has been playing as of recent, but still! This episode was pretty great. obviously, I had a few talking points that I made seperate points for, and I apologise for all the spam, but it was a joy to hear Johnny on and hear the back and fourth between the two of you had going on!

Sorry for botching your name, Disco Stu. Glad you enjoyed the episode anyway.

ClexYoshi: I actually like the remixes for most of the DuckTales song more than the original versions. But for some reason the Moon Theme remix doesn't do it for me. Oh well, different strokes for different folks, and what all.

I was so sure that second track for 4th game was this remix from Nintendo Land.

If you like LBBW's soundtracks for its' remixes of old classic videogame music, then i think you should really look into Nintendo Land OST. This game had so many great remixes, adding it's own spin on so many of them with xylophone and random beep and boops. And it's own original tracks were just as good.

I didn't actually played either game. But damn if the music in NL wasn't one of the bests i ever heard.

Azeke, that's no coincidence. Both of those games had the same composer, Ryo Nagamatsu He's one of the newer Nintendo in-house composers, and has a very promising career, judging by his work thus far.

Yeah, apparently a lot of his music have that folk, "hand-made", celtic sound to them which you can hear in both of these Zelda remixes. Think irish dance music from Titanic. Lots of violins, banjos and other string intruments. See: here or here.

Oh and we can't forget amazing Moo Moo Meadows (should be Nagamatsu), very similar instruments and sounds:

This very so much. Granted the only reason I remember the Mount Vesuvius theme so vividly is because I had to replay the final chapter so many times. But I guess that helped so I can't complain.
