Were you a fan of Rez for reasons other than its vibrator? Well then come on in!

In a joint venture with Lionhead Studios, a company previously absent of the GameCube scene, Jeff Minter is bringing the system Unity, a game that will be unlike anything seen on the console. Having been in development for the past half year, the title looks to be shaping up as a psychedelic shooting game, not unlike Sega’s Rez (which was released early last year for the PS2). The game will have the player progress through ‘a succession of beautiful abstract 3D spaces’, which furthers the comparison to Sega’s released shooter.

The gameplay will apparently vary in tempo, as the pace will often switch from fast to a more gentle progression, and vice versa. The audio effects, which will at least be partially created by Minter using Lionhead’s large facility, are said to be an integral part of the playing experience. Whether or not it is vital to gameplay, an aspect on which many consider Rez to come up short, has yet to be seen, but with the Minter promising something ‘truly extraordinary’ for his self titled dream project, GameCube owners should look forward to something quite unique. We’ll keep a close eye on Unity during the months leading up to its release.
