Nick is back this week to finish up our WiiWare feature, and Lindy returns as well with news that he's been playing... Nintendo games?!? So have the rest of us, although James and Jonny are still a little high on their recent 360 purchases.

We trimmed the show down to just two segments this week: New Business and the WiiWare Round-up (Part Two). But perhaps due to the expanded crew, the episode ended up running just as long as last week. We need to give poor James a break from these marathon sessions! Oh well, his pain = your gain. Expect another Listener Mail session next week, and send in your questions/comments now to make the deadline. You know the address! (Or, you can click here and choose RFN from the list to send us email.)

It's an iTunes issue.

It just showed up in iTunes.

SchadenfreudeAugust 10, 2008

For some reason the mp3 subscription doesn't work for me (iTunes does). Thanks for getting it done James, been checking all day. Now I have something to listen to while I work out. :D

I hope everyone on the podcast (except Greg) checks out Braid.

ShyGuyAugust 10, 2008

I fear Crimm getting burnout from all the editing.

I got Braid a few days back, but I haven't played it yet.  Just for the hell of it I decided to sit down and put some time into Bioshock.

I'll be talking about Braid on Episode Eleventy-First.

GoldenPhoenixAugust 11, 2008

I played Braid last night and it is definitely a unique game. Not sure I am in the "its great" thought patterns but it is a good game.

AVAugust 11, 2008

fantastic episode guys.

I LOL at the bird warning you  and angry videogame nerd reference.

I listened as I painted my moms laundry room so it helped pass the time. (damn corners everywhere)

You guys missed out on "Animales de la Muerte" from High Voltage Software in your Wiiware discussion.

That is probably one of my highest hyped games for wiiware, if not for the Wii. It looks crazy and so much fun and uses wii controls in smart way. I can't wait to play co-op with a friend this will be a blast.

overall podcast I give a 9/10

No mailbag, and no mention of this keeps it from 10 but keep it up.

ShyGuyAugust 11, 2008

I wanna hear about Lindy's Bioshock impressions in episode eleventy first too. (BTW, I have no problem in non-Nintendo content in New Business, or even non-videogame content as long as it isn't to the exclusion of new Nintendo business)

Thanks to a WiiWare gift, you will also be hearing me talk about Toki Tori on the next episode.

GoldenPhoenixAugust 11, 2008

Jonny, I wanted to say to not waste your time getting me to buy GWII :). I didn't like the first game and I doubt I'll like this one!

ShyGuyAugust 11, 2008

I got the impression that Greg was tired.

He's just depressed that he can't play Geo Wars 2.....as am I.

DAaaMan64August 11, 2008

Good episode I think. I liked the work Nick did in the episode and the setup was good.  James was a valuable player in this one because he was pretty damn funny.

And ya I really like 360 achievements and would love to see something similar on Wii. It would be possible with the space on the hard drive and a new channel.

SchadenfreudeAugust 11, 2008

You all sounded a little burned out (especially Jonny). You should cut back the episodes a bit if 2 hours sessions are starting to get to you.

Good episode overall. Anticipating an interesting Braid discussion next episode. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. :D

DAaaMan64August 11, 2008

All this talk of Space Invaders Extreme even has me wanting it!  However, I'm interested in the paddle thing but everywhere I look it's 50 bucks. Where are you guys getting it from?

I haven't noticed that while listening to 110, but we all felt (especially James) that the last couple of episodes were too long.  It comes down to planning: first we had three full segments, then we had five people on the show.  We made a concerted effort to make the next one more terse, and it is.  Should clock in at around 1:45... hardly short, but closer to the average length and hopefully less taxing on our beloved editor.

Wow... Someone who has never read Watchmen before!

Now you're going to think that upcoming film will completely suck. :P

Chokin' the Chocobo!

So that's what Greg is doing over there when he's so quiet.

I wish I would have read this thread before we did the this week's episode (already in the can), because I would have talked about Bioshock some more.  I'm trying to steer away from being so heavy on the 360/PS3 discussion lately.

My Bioshock thoughts: excellent art design, great story, but only decent gameplay.  I mean, it's solid, don't get me wrong, but it gets old after a while.  You only fight a small range of enemies, and you don't even need to use more than half of the Plasmids that you get.  It reminds me of Twilight Princess in that regard, how you gain the advanced sword skills near the end and have no reason to use them whatsoever.

I'm also on the fence about the audio journals.  I can't put my finger on it, but they somehow feel like a cop-out, like a quick and dirty way to tell the backstory of Rapture.  Like instead of cutscenes they just give you these audio journals to tell the story.

I like Bioshock, but I don't LOVE Bioshock.  I place it in the "good not great" category, which seems like heresy based on the amount of hype it received at release.

That's a well reasoned impression of Bioshock and is similar to my feelings.

(Sorry I couldn't resist!)

Lindy, I think you're missing the point when it comes to those audio journals. Bioshock's plotting theme is all about interweaving the story into the actual gameplay experience in order to enhance the player's immersion, rather than just throwing some development into a straight-forward cutscene. That's why the journals are there. Most of them aren't at all crucial to understanding the overarching story, but they all enhance the ideas and themes set. You happen upon them like anyone else would.

Believe me, I'm far from a Bioshock cheerleader (*cough*Sklens*cough*), but that was one thing that I really loved in the game.

I agree with everything Jon wrote about Bioshock.  It creates a unique world and tells an interesting story, but the gameplay mechanics are nothing special.  The combat is too repetitive, and the hacking mini-game is way overused.  I enjoyed the audio journals, but I'm not sure they were the best way to convey the supporting narrative.  I do like how the game avoids cut-scenes, though.

Yeah, me too.  That's why I'm on the fence about the audio journals...I enjoy them, and I think they're really cool in the sense that they give an idea of the events leading up to the "Fall of Rapture" (if you will), but I can't help but feel that that story could have been told in a less - I dunno, impersonal? - manner.  Again, I don't object with what the audio journals are trying to do, but I don't necessarily agree that they're the best way to feed the backstory to the player.

ShyGuyAugust 13, 2008

How I felt was the audio journals made me very aware that I was playing a game.

SchadenfreudeAugust 15, 2008

Any chance the new podcast will be up tomorrow Crimm? :D I just got a tooth pulled and need Greg's voice to ease away the pain.

ShyGuyAugust 15, 2008

NWR could make bank if they had a $5 premium service that allowed members to get the podcast two days early.

D_AverageAugust 15, 2008

Hey crew,

Given that we're in kind of a drought with upcoming Nintendo games for the next 12 + months, maybe you could do a few shows with extended features in spirt of the previous "Why Did the N64 Fail?, The State of The Virtual Console, and everybody's favorite; Games to Play w/ Your Girlfriend".

Some suggested topics are:
Why Did Metroid Die?
Best Nintendo Sports Games of All Time?
Will Third Parties always Bend over for Three Consoles?
Best Mario Game Ever? (an absurd topic yes, but hearing the different opinions and defenses is always amusing -> http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=22496.50)

Just so you guys can get your suggestions in before next week, this week we introduce a new segment:

"James' Crazy Rants."  Send your rant topics to the rfn email address (I'd post it, but we get enough spam already) and I'll try to rant them.

Thats probably the sexiest picture I've ever seen of her.

I don't know why but I find it odd that she has the special Mario Kart red DS phat in that picture.

After listening to episodes 109 and 110 I would like to put in a formal request for more Mr. Jack in the future.  He's my hero.  <3

Although it's kind of funny that he seems to absolutely love everything.

Also, I agree with ShyGuy that I wouldn't mind hearing about non-Nintendo games during the WHACHUBEENPLAYIN segment.  It's not that we don't want to hear about PS3/360/PC games--we just don't want to hear about only those games.  Considering this episode's over a month old, maybe this has already been determined.  (I can't wait to find out.)

SchadenfreudeOctober 01, 2008

Mr. Jack is awesome and everyone here knows it.

Nick gives the world a big hug every time he podcasts.  And God bless him for it.
