You sit at your computer. "I heard people talking on Twitter about Nintendo's recent Wii U sales number," you think. "Maybe I'll go check it out." You hop on Google and search for "wii u sales 2014." You get two results: One reads "Wii U Sales Up 300%" while the other reads "A Veritable Shit Storm: Wii U Barely Cracks 500,000 in Q1 2014" So, do you read "[[Wii U Sales Up 300%]]" or "[[A Veritable Shit Storm: Wii U Barely Cracks 500,000 in Q1 2014]]"?Your eyes glance across the page. "Oh, this doesn't seem that bad." The story says that Nintendo's sales from April to June 2014 are up more than 300% from the same time last year. Off of the success of Mario Kart 8, the Wii U is finally looking up. "It's about damn time," you say with a smile. I wonder [[what's coming out next on Wii U?]]"Well this doesn't look good." The article isn't so much a report on the news as it is a vitriolic piece on how bad the Wii U is selling. "Sega Saturn? Really? C'mon now. The Wii U isn't *that* bad! Pikmin 3 is really good! So is 3D World! And Tropical Freeze!" The crux of the story is that Mario Kart 8, Nintendo's biggest release on the Wii U to date, barely moved the needle on the system. Mario Kart 8 only sold to people who already owned the system, despite the fact that it was available in an excellent bundle and was a part of a Club Nintendo offer that was essentially a "buy one get one free" deal. You now have a choice. Do you write [[a vitriolic comment]] to add to the story? Or do you click over and see [[what's coming out next on Wii U?]]"This guy is a fucking clownshoe and I hope he burns in hell," you begin to type. A demon emerges from your computer. "Don't be such a prick," the demon mutters as your computer explodes. YOU ARE DEAD. Do you see if there are [[video games in hell]] or do you try to see if they have [[the new Smash Bros.]] playable? In a new tab, you see that the next big release on Wii U is Hyrule Warriors, which isn't due out until September 26 in North America. "Really? A four-month gap between releases?" you think. But don't forget, Wii Sports Club came out on disc on July 25, so it's not technically a four-month gap. Also, there are a whole lot of awesome eShop games on Wii U out over the summer. The lineup is one that will likely keep most console owners busy with games such as Shovel Knight and Armillo, but the lack of a major release from Nintendo (or really any other big publisher) makes the summer feel even more barren than usual for game releases. At the bottom of the page, you see two links. One leads to a story on [[3DS sales in 2014]] and the other is an overview of [[Nintendo's Fall Lineup]].All CD-i, all the time. Hope you like awful Zelda games! Let's try this again...[[Nintendo's Q1 2014 Financials]]They totally have it but you can't play it. Maybe try not being a dick next time, okay? Let's try this again...[[Nintendo's Q1 2014 Financials]]"At least the 3DS is still kicking ass," you say as you click over to the story. The story doesn't seem to echo your gut feeling, though. From January to June 2014, the 3DS only roughly matched the system sales from April to June 2013. In 2013, the 3DS more than 2.6 million units from January to June. In 2014, it is barely past 1.4 million units from January to June. The decline could probably be attributed to the game release schedule, though. In 2013, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Brain Age: Concentration Training, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf all came out. In 2014, the lineup is a little weaker, with Bravely Default, Yoshi's New Island, Mario Golf: World Tour, Kirby Triple Deluxe, and Tomodachi Life. Still, the 3DS could be in dire straits. Luckily, the lineup for the rest of 2014 has some Pokémon in it, so it'll probably be okay by the end of the year. The unfortunate reality is that the 3DS could have peaked in 2013. Owners of the system shouldn't worry, though. Great games are still on the way. The same on Wii U. You should probably go check out [[Nintendo's Fall Lineup]].While it takes a while to get going, Nintendo's fall lineup should still be fun. Here's the full list: 8/29 - Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney (3DS) 9/26 - Hyrule Warriors (Wii U) 10/3 - Super Smash Bros. for 3DS 10/26 - Fantasy Life (3DS) October - Bayonetta 2 (Wii U) October - Bayonetta (Wii U) October - Pokémon Art Academy (3DS) 11/21 - Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (3DS) Q4 2014 - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U) 2014 - NES Remix Pack (Wii U) Holiday - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U And then 2015 should be pretty rad. Hopefully the Wii U and the universe won't explode before Splatoon and the new Zelda hit stores. El fin.
