Sega VP of Marketing Sean Ratcliffe hopes that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games will "exceed the original," says House of the Dead: Overkill has met expectations, thinks that MadWorld could b

Based on the interview Sean Ratcliffe gave Venture Beat, the ongoing success of Sega's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise requires keeping a lot of people happy. "It's quite a long list of people who are involved in making that game," explained Sega of America's Vice President of Marketing, "from the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to ISM (International Sports Multimedia) to Nintendo to Sega." And of course, he acknowledged the single most crucial group of all: "Are consumers happy with it?"

The answer must be a resounding yes. The first game, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, has accumulated 10 million units sold worldwide since its release over a year ago near the end of 2007. Sega has noted that their sports games tend to do relatively better in the European market compared to America, but in both markets Mario & Sonic performed "incredibly well."

Obviously, the company is hoping that the sequel, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, will "exceed the original." Like the first game, this game will involve Nintendo's master designer Shigeru Miyamoto, and feature mascots and characters from both legendary gaming companies. It will also include new features, like balance board support and four-player cooperative gameplay. Ratcliffe has an additional reason to think the sequel will do well, saying that he thinks "the events of the Winter Olympics are actually more relevant to gaming" with sports like snowboarding, downhill skiing, bobsledding, and speed skating. However, the DS version of the game won't be able to take advantage of any of the recently released Nintendo DSi's new features since the development team "was already deep into the development cycle" when that possibility came up.

But what about Sega's other offerings on the Wii, like the recent Mature-rated titles House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld? According to Ratcliffe, Overkill "has done very well and has absolutely met our expectations" and describes the initial data for MadWorld as "very encouraging." He says that if the brawler from developer Platinum Games resonates with consumers, they would "absolutely want to make [MadWorld] into a franchise."

Talking about Sega's general place among the Wii's third parties, Ratcliffe boasted that his company was "confident about that platform right from the start" while "a number of [other] publishers were less so." In fact, he claimed that "Sega does incredibly well with a lot of its games on the Wii platform." Beyond that, he claimed that the company had taken the view that "the audience for the Wii fits firmly in the heartland of Sega's consumer base."

Ratcliffe also considered the company's plans for Nintendo's newly released DSi hardware and whether that would change their approach with DS games. "You probably have to believe that ultimately the DSi is going to be the platform that continues and the DS will probably die out," admitted Ratcliffe. Still, he didn't think it likely that Sega would need to change course drastically. "Nintendo platforms tend to have a long tail," he pointed out. "It took Game Boy years before it completely died out." Ratcliffe imagined that they'd work on "incorporating functionality for the DSi" for "key titles," but that Sega would cater to the previous DS and DS Lite audiences "for a long time."

Ratcliffe had more thoughts on the DSi and the future of the Mario & Sonic franchise, so be sure to read the full interview.

Not to knock on you, but when I read poasts by people who don't have a history of trolling go ahead and simulate trolling, it looks awkward GP.  Usually, it looks overdone and diminishes the threat.  When it can be taken seriously and people take offense to it (credible lol-worthy reactions) then the sarcasmo-trolling has done its job.

I guess there really is an art to it.

Oh, it was supposed to be overdone and sarcastic. It wasn't even meant to be over analyzed. It was just a stupid impression of a common trend in game sales.

You know that fans will say that Sega's comments are bull and quote someone like VGchartz when saying the game flopped, even though the numbers are not official in any form.

Really, every time they mention Madworld's sale they start to troll and cry like crazy.

It's a moot point until NPD numbers are released.

Sega has been taking some risks with their Wii lineup, so I'm glad to hear of the company's success.  Mario & Sonic 2 could even be worthwhile if they up the quality of the mini-games.

The first "Mario and Sonic" game was great, but I do agree that some of the mini games lacked polished.

If Sega is to be believed, the Winter games could be more first and indepth than the Olympic Games, and that is epic in my book.

I'm very glad that House of the Dead: Overkill met expectations, and that MadWorld didn't flop. Although it should flop in Europe because of the crap they pulled there.

I've been wanting to try out Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. It's $30 at Best Buy this week, so that might tempt me.

I'm glad to see they are putting effort into the next Mario and Sonic Olympics. With how well the first game sold, it's the kind of sequel where they could just release the same thing and it would sell millions.

I hope both MadWorld and The Conduit perform well enough to become a series.

Something about the video resolution. Pro should explain that in a bit.

Additionally, it's confirmed that the game runs slower on PAL to fit the framerate spec (run the game at 50Hz instead of 60Hz), meaning the passage of time in the game is 16.7% slower than on NTSC.

Eww... that isn't what people generally have in mind when they ask for "old school." Greg and I couldn't determine if the slowdown went to that level of shitiness when worked on the note in Neal's review, so we stuck to what we could confirm.

StratosApril 10, 2009

Speaking of the Madworld PAL scandal, is there any mention from Sega about that? I dropped the fact on another forum and people there seemed to be shocked about it. It is still off of the mainstream game journalist radar.

I'm glad to hear Overkill and Madworld sales are satisfactory to them.

Overkill has 200k and Madworld has 130k

I've heard that the average game breaks even around 200k so this is a good sign for them. Sadly Tenchu is only and 40k and Deadly Creatures is 50k though there is still time for them.

NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 10, 2009

Yeah, great to know Ubisoft's idea of "marketing and awareness" is boxart.

*ROLLS EYES OFF A FUCKING CLIFF*

StratosApril 10, 2009

They didn't do any marketing, did they? And Tenchu is such a fun game.

KDR_11kApril 13, 2009

Oh, right, I was going to rent Tenchu to see if I could stomach its gameplay... Then again I have so damn many games to worry about that I really don't need to buy another one right now, especially not at 50€.

Yeah it's a ripe time for you to quit gaming along with half of NWR.  There's a variety of reasons to quit gaming, one being wasting precious gaming time by visiting NWR.

I know I'm guilty of it, with this thirst for poasts and text and knowledge.

Pro claimed it's more puzzle-like than stealth-like and it seems it only resets you to the beginning of the room if you screw up which would fix the biggest issue I have with stealth (pretty much having to start the whole level over if you misjudge a distance even once).
