Sequel to Umbrella Chronicles is joined by two classic RE titles.

Today Capcom officially announced the sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, entitled Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. The Wii-exclusive sequel is set for release this winter.

Capcom also revealed a Resident Evil "Classics" line for Wii, which will feature the re-release of GameCube titles Resident Evil (the remake) and Resident Evil Zero. Capcom did not confirm new Wii play controls in either title, but due to their release in Japan featuring retrofitted GameCube controls, it is unlikely.

CORRECTION: The original article stated that the Japanese titles featured Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition controls. This information was gathered from old Famitsu translations and is not accurate.

CAPCOM® BRINGS RESIDENT EVIL® BACK TO THE WIITM WITH RESIDENT EVIL®: THE DARKSIDE CHRONICLES AND TWO TITLES IN THE RESIDENT EVIL "CLASSICS" LINE

Sequel to Resident Evil®: The Umbrella Chronicles, joins Resident Evil Zero and the Nintendo Gamecube® remake of Resident Evil on the Wii Platform

SAN MATEO, Calif. – March 12, 2009 -- Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced its plans for a big comeback of its multi-million-selling franchise, Resident Evil® to the Wii™ video game system this year. Resident Evil®: The Darkside Chronicles, the sequel to the highly successful Wii title Resident Evil®: The Umbrella Chronicles, is in development exclusively for the Wii and is set to hit North American retailers this winter. Capcom also introduced its plans for a new Resident Evil "Classics" line, which will bring the critically acclaimed Nintendo GameCube™ classics, Resident Evil® and Resident Evil® Zero exclusively to the Wii, allowing a whole new audience to experience the world of Resident Evil.

"We are very excited to be bringing the sequel to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles to the Wii as it’s the perfect fit for the platform," said Mona Hamilton, vice president, marketing, Capcom Entertainment. "We are always looking for new ways to give Capcom fans a chance to experience our games. Umbrella Chronicles was a huge success for us, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles includes a more in-depth co-op experience, and we are excited to bring this exclusive content to the Wii audience."

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles‘s story is based on Resident Evil 2 and includes the popular characters, Leon S Kenney and Claire Redfield. Its on-rails style gameplay and active camera will create a more immersive "Chronicles" survival experience. As in the last installment, this is a first-person game with extreme shooting gameplay and interactive pathways. Filling in many of the missing pieces of storyline that were not covered in the original "Umbrella Chronicles", Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles will give hardcore fans the chance to re-live some of the most classic moments of the Resident Evil franchise, while allowing new players to take advantage of the intense action-horror experience only possible on the Wii.

Gamers can choose to take on their enemies with the help of an A.I.-controlled character or enlist the help of a friend to fight via two-player co-op. Adding new dimension and strategy to the arcade-style gameplay in the "Chronicles" experience, the new Evade system will utilize the Wii Remote for a more intense experience when fighting enemies.

Capcom’s new Resident Evil "Classics" line will allow the new audience who has embraced the Wii to experience some of the greatest games in the Resident Evil franchise for the value price of $29.99. Both set to launch this year, the remake of Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero have been refitted to support the Wii Remote, giving the Wii audience easy access to the rich characters and in-depth storylines of the series and the chance to experience both games on a new platform.

More information on Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles and the Resident Evil "Classics" Line will be revealed in the coming months.

Whatever.  So the REmake and RE: Zero get widescreen (?) Wii versions with some Wiimote control, and as we found out yesterday we have an Umbrella Chronicles sequel coming.  Geez, it's amazing how quickly Capcom dropped like a rock in the court of public opinion on Wii from one of the best 3rd Parties on the system in that first year to one of the least interesting now.

How utterly disappointing.  At this point I'd even settle for RE2 remade in the same vain as REmake.

(Vein?  I'm embarrassed I don't know this.  Pretty sure it's vain.)

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusMarch 12, 2009

RE:zero and REmake on Wii won't have RE4 style controls they just have the buttons remapped to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Without an RE4 control scheme (over-the-shoulder), I don't care. Darkside Chronicles still makes me happy, but the Wiimake and Resident Wiivil Zero make me sad.

It's "vein" the way you used it.  "Vain" is an adjective.

You're so vain, you prob'ly think this post is about you. You're so vain (so vain!)! You prob'ly think this post is about you, don't you? Don't you?

I know what vain means.  I also know what a vein is.  But neither really make that much sense in the original sentence ("same _______").

Vein does.  ;D

You were already looking at a browser, so why didn't you just look it up yourself in the first place?

vuduMarch 12, 2009

I thought about it for a few seconds, but I wasn't sure what exactly I would look up.  Then I decided I didn't care enough either way.

ReverendNoahWhateleyMarch 12, 2009

With proper use of the Wiimote, RE and RE0's terrible play control will come through with incredible precision.

I didn't care when they came out on GameCube and I don't care now.
Urge to buy Umbrella Chronicles is rising though.

i feel like throwing up like a zombie. part of me wants to give up entirely on the damn Resident Evil franchise. Capcom is converting it to something it wasn't, and just being lazy.

Wow. NOBODY picked up on my Carly Simon reference? Com'on, people.

Resident Evil 4 already perverted the series well past being anything that contains survival or horror. I'm much more excited about another good lightgun game (especially after how disappointing HotD: Overkill was) than I would have been about RE5, which just looks like a generic Gears of War at this point.

Janet Jackson used that hook in one of her newer albums, can't remember which one though...

Can someone do that picture of that pirate tied up, but instead of Nintendooooooooooo, its Capcoooooooooooom!

Ugh, this is seriously embarrassing. Looks like Capcom learned the wrong lesson from Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition... What little respect I had for them is now gone.

TJ SpykeMarch 13, 2009

How is this any different than Nintendo's "New Play Control!" line? Maybe Nintendo should approach Capcom and see if they would like to use the label.

Not sure I will get either port. I have heard mixed impressions on the Japanese versions.

Like I said, it's amazing that in less than 2 years Capcom's plunged from being easily the best Wii 3rd Party (Zack & Wiki, RE4: Wii, RE: Umbrella Chronicles, Mega Man 9, Okami) to being one that I have trouble caring about anymore.  Ironically, the company that's taken their place is the typically-mediocre Sega of all companies with House of the Dead: Overkill, Madworld, and the Conduit (yeah, I know Sega didn't actually make any of these games, but they did publish them over here).

Now, to be fair I did take a look at that initial trailer, and Darkside Chronicles does look like a good game and it actually looks pretty good graphically (they also seem to have realized that not seeing your teammates outside cutscenes was pretty lame in the first game).  It's also based on my second-favorite RE game, and I'll probably buy it.  But damn it, Capcom!  Where's the big epic RE experience (ala RE4) on Wii?  A Rail Shooter is a perfectly enjoyable experience, but I want more than what a Rail Shooter can provide from this franchise.

What do you expect? They are making a sequel to a very successful game in UC, is that somehow odd now? Also in regards to the ports, that is Capcom, who has always loved ports.

Resident Evil 1 and Street Fighter 2 are at war to see which game has been milked the most. So far ST 2 is winning.

Nintendo added wide screen, some minor new elements in each game (Picture in Picture in Mario Power Tennis, day replays in Pikmin), new controls without using the gamecube/classic controls as a crutch and games that didn't support progressive scan now do.

This actually is what I expected, and I even sort of called this one:

I've got a bad feeling this is going to be something like... the Resident Evil remake on the GameCube being re-released with Wii controls.

I can’t say I am disappointed because it is what I expected, and I’ve never played a Resident Evil game anyway. As a Wii owner though treatment like this is pretty embarrassing… though I suppose if I cared about my image I wouldn’t own a Wii. ;)

I am astounded by how Capcom has embraced remaking/porting from generation to generation. Is it unprecedented? First they remake RE for GC, then they remake the REmake for wii? It's almost as if Capcom will just deliver those two games, plus 4, over and over again to Nintendo consoles.

Hell, I'd have KILLED for an RE2 Wiimake. It'd have been instabuy using the Wiimote to aim. I've actually never played it. But RE0 and RE1? And if they lack Wiimote aiming, I'm even more turned off.

RE: DC though, I'm excited for!

Aside from the minor graphical upgrades that come with moving to Wii (widescreen, progressive scan support), I don't see the point in these re-releases.  But how exactly did you think you'd be able to use the "Wiimote to aim" in a 3rd person game that uses fixed camera angles?  What, just click on them and they die?

I dunno...RE4-style remake? T_T

That would require effort, something Capcom isn't too into lately with Wii.
