Japanese Weekly Software Charts for March 10-16

Super Smash Bros. Brawl gets pushed down by Beautiful Writing and Japanese gangsters.

This week shows yet again how strong the casual market is in Japan. Nintendo’s own calligraphy and Chinese character training game stormed right to the top, just ahead of the new PlayStation 3 Yakuza title.

Wii Fit also continued to impress, heading slowly but surely towards the two million mark. Meanwhile, Wii Sports continues its phenomenal sales, which could make it seem like a system pack-in, despite it not being so in Japan.

EA Confirms 8 Wii Titles in Development

Peter Moore of EA Sports lets Wii owners know what's coming.

Peter Moore, president of Electronic Arts' EA Sports division, has revealed that EA currently has eight games in development for the Wii.

Speaking on his EA blog, Moore talked about the new properties his company is bringing to the Wii, such as the recently-announced Facebreaker boxing game. EA is looking to capitalize on the expanded audience Nintendo has created and "expand" the EA Sports brand to accommodate them.

Reggie Promises It All for E3

Fils-Aime says a big game and a smash hit for the holidays will be announced at E3.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the company has big plans for the second half of 2008, but don't expect to hear about them until E3.

Speaking with Geoff Keighley of Game Trailers TV on what Nintendo plans for the rest of 2008, Reggie was his usual cryptic self.

"We're gonna unveil the whole second half during E3,” Reggie said. “I mean come on, there's more than enough to get people excited."

Nintendo Prepping for Korea Wii Launch? Wii

Nintendo and Activision have submitted Wii games to the Korean Game Ratings Board.

The Wii has been a hit in Japan, Europe, Australia, the Americas, and now it may soon be hitting the Korean market as well.

Nintendo has applied to the Korean Game Ratings Board for Wii Sports and Wii Play, two titles that have been the cornerstone of the Wii's sales success. Adding fuel to the fire is the news that third party publisher Activision has also received ratings for two titles of their own which were unspecified.

Manhunt 2 Receives Classification in the UK Wii

Rockstar's controversial horror title has been given an '18' rating by the BBFC following the Video Appeals Committee's decision to uphold its ruling.

Manhunt 2 has been granted certification in the UK after the Video Appeals Committee upheld its decision to accept Rockstar's appeal against the BBFC's refusal to classify the game. The BBFC has now rated Manhunt 2 '18', allowing it go on sale in the UK. A release date has yet to be confirmed by Rockstar.

Brawl Causing Problems With Wii Consoles Wii

"A very small number" of Wii owners are finding their consoles can't read the dual-layer disc used by the game. Others can't see the Wi-Fi options when connected. UPDATED: Nintendo claims the Wi-Fi Options issue is resolved!

Nintendo Tops List of Top 50 Developers

In Game Developer magazine's research on sales and reputation, Nintendo is number one.

The March 2008 issue of Game Developer magazine will detail the top 20 developers of 2007, and Nintendo will be the very first one on the list. The ranking comes from a study that Think Services' Game Developer magazine and Game Developer Research division put together, combining both sales data and a company's reputation to rank the top developers of last year.
